How to Transfer Data from an Old iPad to a New iPad mini

The safest way to move data to a new iPad mini is to keep the old iPad available, make a fresh backup, and then use Apple’s Quick Start direct transfer when both devices meet the requirements. If the old iPad is unavailable, restore an iCloud backup. If you have a local backup, restore it from Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes over USB. Keep the old iPad and its backup untouched until you have checked the new iPad mini.

Apple supports all three routes. The best choice depends on whether the old iPad works, whether a recent backup exists, your Wi-Fi connection, and whether you can use a Mac or Windows PC.

Which transfer method should you use?

Use this decision table before turning on the new iPad mini. It prevents a common mistake: erasing or disconnecting the old iPad before a usable fallback exists.

Method Choose it when Requirements and trade-offs
Quick Start direct transfer Both iPads are present, working, and can be placed beside each other. Apple’s iPad guide describes wireless transfer when both iPads use iPadOS 13 or later. Keep the devices near each other and connected to power while migration runs. The on-screen setup can also offer an iCloud route instead.
Restore from iCloud backup The old iPad is missing, damaged, unavailable, or you prefer cloud restoration. You need the Apple Account used for the backup, a suitable backup, Wi-Fi, and enough time for content to download after setup. Temporary iCloud storage may be offered to eligible purchasers of a new device, but Apple does not guarantee eligibility for every buyer.
Restore from a computer backup You already have a local backup or want to avoid downloading the entire backup from iCloud. You need a compatible USB cable, the computer containing the backup, and the encrypted-backup password if the backup was encrypted. Finder, Apple Devices, and iTunes availability depends on the computer’s operating system and software.

In every case, confirm that you know the Apple Account password before beginning. A transfer can appear to work while still requiring that password for activation, purchases, or later downloads.

Prepare the old iPad and new iPad mini

1. Keep the old iPad available

Do not trade in, sell, reset, or sign out of the old iPad yet. You may need it to approve a prompt, make another backup, or retrieve information if a transfer is interrupted.

2. Make a fresh backup

Create a current backup before starting the new iPad mini’s setup. This is your recovery point if direct migration stops, the wrong backup is selected, or the new iPad has to be erased and set up again. The backup can be in iCloud or on a computer; the important part is that it finishes successfully and has a current date.

3. Check the Apple Account password

Have the password for the Apple Account associated with the old iPad ready. If you use an encrypted computer backup, also locate that backup’s encryption password. Apple cannot restore an encrypted local backup without the password that was created when encryption was enabled.

4. Prepare power, Wi-Fi, and cable connections

  • Plug both iPads into power for a direct transfer.
  • Use a reliable Wi-Fi network for Quick Start’s setup prompts, iCloud restoration, and post-setup downloads.
  • For a computer restore, inspect the connectors on the iPad and computer and use a cable that fits both. Apple’s instructions do not specify one universal cable model because the correct connector depends on the devices.
  • Keep enough time available for downloads after the initial restore. Apple states that restore time varies with backup size and network speed.

5. Check the software requirement for direct transfer

Apple’s iPad guide says its described wireless transfer works when both iPads have iPadOS 13 or later. If either iPad is below that requirement, update it if possible or use an iCloud or computer backup instead. Exact setup labels can vary by iPadOS release, so follow the wording shown on your devices.

Transfer with Quick Start

Quick Start is usually the simplest route when the old iPad is working and beside the new iPad mini. It uses the old device to configure the new one and can offer a direct wireless migration.

  1. Turn on the new iPad mini. If it is already showing the Home Screen, see the erase section below; restore-from-backup setup begins at the Hello screen.
  2. Place the old iPad next to the new iPad mini. On the old iPad, make sure Wi-Fi is connected and Bluetooth is enabled. Connect both iPads to power.
  3. Follow the Quick Start prompt that appears on the old iPad. Use the old iPad’s passcode when requested, then authenticate with the Apple Account credentials shown during setup.
  4. When the new iPad mini presents the transfer choices, select the direct transfer option if you want data to move wirelessly from the old iPad. If you select the iCloud option instead, the new iPad will download from the backup you choose.
  5. Keep the iPads close together and powered until the migration stage finishes. Moving one device away, allowing it to run out of power, or interrupting Wi-Fi can stop the process.
  6. Complete any remaining setup prompts on the new iPad mini. The old iPad should remain untouched until you have checked the new device.

Quick Start’s initial migration is not the same as every item being immediately available. Photos, apps, music, and other iCloud content can continue downloading after setup, so leave the new iPad mini connected to Wi-Fi and power.

Restore the new iPad mini from an iCloud backup

Use this route when the old iPad is unavailable or when you deliberately prefer a cloud backup. You must start from the new iPad mini’s Hello/setup flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn on the new iPad mini and proceed through the Hello screens until the setup assistant asks how to transfer your data.
  2. Connect to a Wi-Fi network when prompted. A stable connection is important because the backup and later app or photo downloads use the network.
  3. Choose Restore from iCloud Backup or the equivalent restore-from-iCloud label displayed by your iPadOS version.
  4. Sign in with the Apple Account that owns the backup.
  5. Review the available backups and select the intended one by checking its date and size. Do not select an older backup merely because it appears first in the list.
  6. Leave the iPad mini connected to Wi-Fi and power while the restore proceeds. If the setup screen returns to a download or waiting state, keep the device connected rather than assuming the process has failed.
  7. Finish the remaining setup prompts, then allow apps, photos, music, and other iCloud content to download in the background.

Apple may offer temporary iCloud storage to some people who purchase a new iPad, but that offer is conditional. Do not rely on it until the option actually appears for your Apple Account. If you already have a usable backup, verify its date before changing anything on the old iPad.

Restore a computer backup with Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes

A computer restore is useful when the backup is stored locally or when network conditions make a large iCloud restore impractical. It requires a physical USB connection between the computer and the new iPad mini.

Mac using Finder

On macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, Apple directs users to Finder.

  1. Connect the new iPad mini to the Mac with a compatible USB cable.
  2. Open Finder and select the iPad mini in the sidebar. Approve the trust or passcode prompts shown on the iPad if requested.
  3. Choose the option to restore a backup, then review the list of available backups.
  4. Select the backup with the correct date. If Finder asks for an encrypted-backup password, enter the password created when that backup was encrypted.
  5. Start the restore and keep the cable connected until Finder reports completion. Disconnecting early can leave the iPad in an incomplete setup state.

Windows using Apple Devices

On Windows 10 or later, Apple’s current route is the Apple Devices app where available.

  1. Connect the iPad mini to the Windows computer with a compatible USB cable.
  2. Open Apple Devices and select the connected iPad.
  3. Choose Restore Backup, inspect the backup dates, and select the intended backup.
  4. Enter the encrypted-backup password if the selected backup requires one.
  5. Keep the iPad connected until the restore finishes, then follow any setup prompts on the device.

iTunes

Apple’s transfer guidance also lists iTunes as a computer-backup route. The exact menus depend on the iTunes version and Windows configuration. Connect the iPad, select it in iTunes, choose the restore-from-backup command, select the correct backup, and supply its encryption password when requested. If the computer offers Apple Devices instead, use that app’s restore workflow.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

What the USB step does and does not require

You do not need a special cable model identified by name. You need a cable whose connectors match both the iPad mini and computer and that can carry data, not merely charge. If the computer does not recognize the iPad, try another compatible port or cable before assuming the backup is unusable.

If the new iPad mini is already set up

Apple’s restore-from-backup instructions expect the device to be at the Hello/setup stage. If you have already completed setup and reached the Home Screen, the normal backup-restore choices will not appear in the same way.

  1. Confirm that the desired iCloud or computer backup exists and that you know its date. Do this before erasing the new iPad mini.
  2. Open the iPad’s Settings app and use the erase-all-content-and-settings command. Read the confirmation screens carefully; erasing removes data currently stored on the new iPad.
  3. After the iPad restarts at the Hello screen, repeat either the Quick Start, iCloud, or computer restore procedure.

Do not erase the old iPad as a substitute for erasing the new one. The old device is your fallback until the new iPad mini has been checked.

What to check after setup

A restore can be functionally complete before every item is visible. Use a deliberate verification pass rather than judging success from the first Home Screen view.

  • Confirm that you can unlock the new iPad mini and that the expected Apple Account is signed in.
  • Check that the backup’s recent photos, files, contacts, calendars, and notes appear where you expect them. Cloud-synchronized material may still be downloading.
  • Open several important apps and allow pending updates or downloads to finish.
  • Check the Photos app for a continuing download indicator and leave the iPad on Wi-Fi and power if content is still arriving.
  • Verify that music and other purchased or synchronized content is returning before removing anything from the old iPad.
  • Keep the old iPad and its backup until you have opened the data you consider essential and are satisfied that the new device is usable.

There is no reliable universal completion time. Apple’s wording is precise: “The time it takes to restore varies depending on the backup size and your network speed.”

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Quick Start does not appear

  • Wake and unlock the old iPad, place it beside the new iPad mini, and confirm that Bluetooth is enabled on the old device.
  • Check that both iPads are connected to power and that the old iPad has Wi-Fi access.
  • Confirm the iPadOS requirement for Apple’s described direct wireless transfer: iPadOS 13 or later on both iPads.
  • If the prompt still does not appear, restart both iPads and try again, or use the verified iCloud or computer backup.

The wrong iCloud backup is listed

Compare each backup’s date and size before selecting it. If the recent backup is missing, return to the old iPad if possible, connect it to power and Wi-Fi, and make a new backup. Do not erase the old iPad while you are still trying to locate the correct backup.

The iCloud restore seems stuck

Keep the iPad mini on reliable Wi-Fi and connected to power. Large backups and slow networks take longer, and app or photo downloads can continue after the main setup screens finish. If the device displays a clear error rather than ordinary waiting, record the message and retry from the verified backup instead of selecting an unknown older copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The computer cannot see the iPad mini

  • Unlock the iPad and respond to any trust prompt.
  • Try a different compatible USB port and a cable that supports data.
  • Use Finder on macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, or Apple Devices on Windows 10 or later, as applicable.
  • If the backup is encrypted, make sure you are entering the password for that backup, not the Apple Account password.

The new iPad mini is already at the Home Screen

Backup restoration through setup requires the Hello stage. Verify the backup first, erase the new iPad mini, and then begin the selected transfer method again.

How to decide when it is safe to erase or give away the old iPad

Wait until the new iPad mini has completed its visible downloads and you have opened the data and apps that matter most. Keep the latest backup available even after the initial transfer appears successful. Once you are satisfied, sign out or erase the old iPad using Apple’s current device-erase guidance before handing it to another person. The transfer itself does not prove that every cloud item has finished downloading, so treat verification as a separate step.
