To move an old Apple Watch to an Apple Watch SE 3, pair the SE 3 with the iPhone that backed up your old watch, then choose the previous watch backup when setup offers it. Keep the iPhone unlocked and nearby while setup restores settings and synchronizes data. If you are replacing the iPhone as well, restore the newest iPhone backup first; Apple Watch data is included in that iPhone backup.
The exact screens can vary with the iPhone and watch software, but Apple’s supported process is a backup-and-restore transfer rather than a direct watch-to-watch cable transfer. The steps below cover a watch-only replacement, an iPhone replacement, Health and Activity protection, and recovery when the old phone or a backup is unavailable.

Choose the transfer path that matches your situation
There are two decisions: whether you are keeping the same iPhone, and whether you want to restore the old watch’s backup or configure the SE 3 as a new watch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Situation | What you do | What you keep |
|---|---|---|
| Same iPhone, new Apple Watch SE 3 | Pair the SE 3 with the existing iPhone and select the previous Apple Watch backup during setup. | Settings and data contained in the selected watch backup. |
| New iPhone and new Apple Watch SE 3 | Back up the old iPhone, set up the new iPhone from that backup, then complete Apple Watch pairing in the Watch app. | Apple Watch content included in the iPhone backup, subject to the backup’s date and Health-data requirements. |
| No need for old settings | Choose the option to set up the SE 3 as new instead of restoring a previous watch backup. | A clean configuration; old watch settings are not restored from the backup. |
Restoring is the right choice when you want the SE 3 to resemble the old watch. Setting up as new is useful when you deliberately want to reconfigure everything, but it does not bring back the old watch’s backed-up settings.

Before you begin
Check iPhone compatibility and software
For Apple Watch SE 3 setup, Apple specifies an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Update the iPhone before starting. Turn on Bluetooth and connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or cellular service. Apple’s current setup instructions are at Set up your Apple Watch.
- Have the Apple Account credentials used with the watch available.
- Know the watch passcode, if one is enabled.
- Keep the old watch and the iPhone close together long enough for the latest backup to complete.
- Have the Apple Watch SE 3 powered on and close to the unlocked iPhone when pairing begins.
Make sure a recent backup exists
Apple Watch normally backs up automatically to its paired iPhone while the devices are near each other. Apple’s backup guidance states: “When you unpair your Apple Watch from your iPhone, the watch is backed up to your iPhone to make sure the latest data is saved.” Read the full explanation in Apple’s Back up your Apple Watch guide.
If you still have the old watch and iPhone, do not erase the watch before the iPhone has had an opportunity to back it up. Unpairing the old watch from the iPhone initiates a backup, which is why the normal replacement flow starts from the paired iPhone.

Extra preparation when an iPhone is also being replaced
For an iPhone-to-iPhone move, Apple recommends updating the old iPhone and watch, backing up the old iPhone to iCloud or to a computer, and selecting the latest backup when setting up the new iPhone. Both iPhones need Wi-Fi. Apple also says the Apple Watch and the new iPhone should each have at least 50 percent charge during this transfer.
Health and Activity records need special attention. For an iCloud backup, confirm that Health is syncing in iCloud. If you use a computer backup, turn on backup encryption; Apple says an encrypted computer backup is required to preserve Health and Activity content. The details are in Pair your Apple Watch with a new iPhone.
How do I transfer data from my old Apple Watch to my new Apple Watch?
1. Leave the old watch paired long enough to back up
With the old watch and its iPhone together, make sure the iPhone is updated and connected. The watch uses the iPhone as its ordinary backup destination. If you unpair the old watch before pairing the SE 3, the unpairing process makes a final backup on the iPhone.

2. Start pairing the Apple Watch SE 3
- Unlock the iPhone and place it next to the Apple Watch SE 3.
- Turn on the SE 3 and wait for the pairing prompt.
- Follow the prompt to begin pairing. If no prompt appears, open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone, choose the option to add or pair a watch, and follow the on-screen instructions.
The iPhone must be the phone on which the previous watch backup is available. If you are using a different iPhone, follow the separate migration process below rather than trying to make the old watch backup appear on an unrelated phone.
3. Select the previous watch during setup
When setup detects that another Apple Watch was configured with the iPhone, review the choices it presents. Apple may offer Express Setup, or a customization path. Choose the customization option when you want to select a specific backup, then choose the backup belonging to the old Apple Watch.
If Express Setup is offered and its defaults suit you, you can use it instead. The important decision is whether setup restores the earlier watch backup or starts the SE 3 without those old settings. Do not choose the new-watch path accidentally if preserving the old configuration is your goal.
4. Complete the on-screen setup
- Sign in with the requested Apple Account credentials.
- Create or enter the watch passcode when prompted.
- Review the settings presented by the setup assistant.
- Install any software update that setup requires.
- Keep the iPhone and SE 3 close together until pairing, restoration, and synchronization finish.
Do not treat the first visible watch face as proof that every item has synchronized. Let the setup process finish before separating the devices or changing settings.
How do I restore my Apple Watch from a backup when changing iPhones?
When both the iPhone and watch are changing, the iPhone backup is the bridge. Apple states that backing up the iPhone also backs up Apple Watch data. Use the following order so the new iPhone has the watch information available when pairing starts.

- Update the old iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Verify that the old iPhone can connect to Wi-Fi.
- Check that Health is enabled for iCloud syncing, or plan to use an encrypted computer backup.
- Create a fresh iCloud backup or encrypted computer backup of the old iPhone.
An unencrypted computer backup can omit Health and Activity content. If those records matter, enable the encryption option before creating the backup rather than relying on an older unencrypted copy.

2. Set up the new iPhone from the latest backup
Turn on the new iPhone and choose the most recent backup of the old iPhone when the setup assistant asks how to transfer your information. Keep both iPhones on Wi-Fi. The backup date matters: watch changes made after that backup cannot be restored from it.
3. Finish Apple Watch pairing
After the new iPhone is configured, keep the watch unlocked and on your wrist if the transfer instructions request that state. If the new iPhone does not automatically continue with the watch, open the Apple Watch app and start its pairing flow manually. Follow the prompts to use the watch information carried over in the iPhone backup. Apple’s complete procedure is documented in Pair your Apple Watch with a new iPhone.
4. Allow synchronization to complete
Keep the SE 3 and new iPhone near each other while the Watch app completes setup. Avoid erasing the old watch or old iPhone until you have confirmed that the new devices contain the information you need and that you can sign in to your Apple Account.

Using iCloud
Before making the iPhone backup, open the iPhone’s iCloud settings and confirm that Health is allowed to sync. Health and Activity data stored in iCloud updates on devices signed in to the same Apple Account. This synchronization is separate from simply seeing a watch backup listed during setup, so verify the Apple Account and Health setting before you begin.
Using a Mac or PC backup
Choose encrypted backup in the computer’s iPhone backup settings. Apple identifies encryption as the requirement for carrying Health and Activity content in a computer backup. Record the backup password securely; without it, the encrypted backup cannot be restored.
Understand the Activity Sharing limitation
Apple says iCloud does not store Activity Sharing data. A successful watch or iPhone restore therefore should not be treated as a way to recover every social-sharing state. The records that depend on iCloud Health synchronization and the records included in the selected device backup follow different storage rules.

Check the result after setup
- Open the Health app and confirm that recent categories and dates are present.
- Open Activity and Workouts and check that the expected recent entries appear.
- Review the Watch app for the settings you intended to restore.
- Leave the devices connected and nearby if synchronization is still visibly in progress.
If the old iPhone is gone or unavailable
A watch that remains paired to an old iPhone cannot simply be moved by placing it beside a different phone. Apple’s recovery instructions require erasing the watch, pairing it with the new iPhone, and then trying to restore from a backup. Read the current troubleshooting flow in If you can’t pair your Apple Watch with a new iPhone.
- Erase the Apple Watch from the watch itself when the old paired iPhone is no longer available.
- Pair the erased watch with the new iPhone.
- When setup offers a backup, select the most recent applicable Apple Watch backup.
- If no backup exists, continue with setup as new.
Erasing the watch can remove changes made after the last backup. If there is no usable backup at all, Apple’s supported fallback is a new-watch setup; there is no later restore point to select.
When the backup does not appear or the restore is incomplete
| Symptom | Action | What the limitation means |
|---|---|---|
| No previous watch backup is listed | Update the iPhone and watch, confirm you are using the iPhone or iPhone backup associated with the old watch, then restart the pairing flow. | A backup from a different phone or an unavailable backup cannot be selected merely because the watch has the same Apple Account. |
| The old watch is still paired to a missing iPhone | Erase the watch, pair it to the new iPhone, and try the restore step again. | Changes since the latest backup may be lost. |
| Health or Activity history is missing after a computer restore | Repeat the process with an encrypted computer backup, or use iCloud Health synchronization with the same Apple Account. | Unencrypted computer backups do not preserve the required Health and Activity content. |
| Activity, Workouts, or settings are not current | Identify the date of the backup used and compare it with the last time the old watch was near its iPhone. | Apple warns that a restore may not include Activity, Workouts, or settings changed after the last backup. |
| The iPhone does not show the watch-pairing flow | Open the Apple Watch app manually and start pairing from there. | The automatic prompt is convenient, but the Watch app is the manual route Apple provides. |
Restore the old configuration or start the SE 3 as new?
Restore a backup when continuity matters
Select the old watch backup if you want the SE 3 to retain the prior watch configuration and the data present in that backup. This is the normal replacement path when the old watch is being retired and the iPhone still holds its backup.
Set up as new when you want a clean start
Choose setup as new when you intentionally want to rebuild the watch configuration. You can customize settings from the beginning, but this choice does not restore the old watch’s settings from its backup. If preserving historical data is important, resolve the backup issue before choosing the clean-start option.
Final verification checklist
- The SE 3 appears in the Apple Watch app on the intended iPhone.
- You can unlock the watch with the passcode you chose or restored.
- The Apple Account is the one associated with the old watch and the selected backup.
- Health and Activity synchronization is enabled when those records are important.
- Recent Health, Activity, and Workout entries are visible after synchronization.
- The old watch and old iPhone have not been erased until the new setup has been checked.
For a same-iPhone upgrade, the essential sequence is: let the old watch back up, pair the Apple Watch SE 3, select the old watch backup, and keep both devices nearby until setup finishes. For an iPhone upgrade too, make the newest iPhone backup first, protect Health data with iCloud syncing or encrypted computer backup, restore the new iPhone, and then complete Watch app pairing.
