The safest way to move from an old phone to the OPPO Reno 17 is to use OPPO Clone Phone for the broad migration, then run WhatsApp’s own transfer flow before registering WhatsApp on the Reno 17. Android users can also use the setup wizard’s Copy apps & data option, while iPhone users need Android setup with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable for WhatsApp chats and media.
Back up anything already stored on the Reno 17 first. OPPO warns that Clone Phone can overwrite apps and app data on the destination device. Keep both phones charged, close together and connected as the instructions request, and check that the Reno 17 has enough free storage before starting.

For an Android source, Clone Phone is usually the broadest first pass. For WhatsApp, treat the chat migration as a separate operation even if you have already copied other data.

Prepare both phones before copying anything
Protect data already on the Reno 17
If the Reno 17 has photos, messages or other files you want to keep, copy them to a computer or cloud service before using Clone Phone. OPPO states that existing apps and app data on the new phone can be overwritten by the old phone’s data. A reset is not required for every transfer, but a backup gives you a recovery option if the destination becomes cluttered or an app is replaced.
Charge, connect and position the phones
- Charge both phones so neither shuts down during migration.
- Keep the phones close together while pairing and transferring.
- Enable Wi-Fi and any temporary hotspot or connection that the on-screen Clone Phone instructions request. Clone Phone uses a direct Wi-Fi connection and does not consume mobile-data allowance for the transfer itself.
- Do not switch repeatedly between transfer screens or leave either phone unattended during the pairing step.
Check storage on the Reno 17
Open the Reno 17’s storage settings and make sure there is room for the selected photos, videos, files and apps. Android’s setup flow can let you choose which data to copy when space is insufficient. Selecting only essential categories is safer than filling the phone completely and discovering that later photos or app updates cannot install.
Keep WhatsApp unregistered on the new phone
If you plan to use WhatsApp’s Chat Transfer, do not finish WhatsApp setup on the Reno 17 first. The new phone must remain unregistered until the transfer begins. Have the same phone number available on both devices, leave Wi-Fi enabled and keep the phones near each other.

- Open Clone Phone on the Reno 17 and on the old Android phone. If the old phone does not already have it, install the official Clone Phone application identified by the Reno 17’s on-screen instructions.
- On the Reno 17, select This is the new device.
- When asked for the old-phone type, choose the Android option. The wording may vary slightly with the Reno 17’s ColorOS version.
- Use the old phone to scan the QR code shown on the Reno 17. Accept the requested connection and permission prompts on both devices.
- Review the category list. Select contacts, messages, call history, photos, videos, audio, files, apps and other supported categories you want to bring over.
- Check the estimated size and available storage. Deselect large folders or apps that you can reinstall later if the estimate is too close to the Reno 17’s capacity.
- Tap the start or transfer control and leave both phones on their transfer screens until the completion message appears.
- After the migration, open several representative apps, inspect the Gallery, check contacts and send a test message. Handle WhatsApp separately using the procedure below rather than assuming its chats were copied correctly.
What Clone Phone does not guarantee
OPPO cautions that incompatible applications or unsupported app data may not migrate. An app can appear on the Reno 17 while its login, downloaded content or internal database is missing. If that happens, install the latest Android version of the app from its official source, sign in again and use that app’s own backup-and-restore feature. Banking, authentication, streaming-download and enterprise apps commonly require a fresh sign-in or device approval even after a successful phone migration.
Use Android’s setup wizard instead
Android’s built-in setup transfer is useful when the Reno 17 is still being configured or when you prefer a cable-assisted copy. Google supports both cable and wireless transfer. A compatible USB cable or adapter may be needed when the two phones use different connectors.
- Turn on the Reno 17 and begin initial setup.
- When the setup wizard offers it, select Copy apps & data.
- Choose a cable connection if you have a compatible data cable and adapter, or choose the wireless option and follow the pairing instructions.
- Unlock the old Android phone and approve the connection and copy prompts.
- Review the categories and the estimated storage. Select the items you need, then start the copy.
- Keep both devices connected and powered until setup reports completion. Continue through the Reno 17’s remaining setup screens.
Google’s setup flow can copy apps and certain app data, music, photos, videos, contacts, text messages, multimedia in text messages, most settings, wallpaper and call history. It may not copy downloads, photos, videos or music stored in hidden folders, applications installed outside Google Play, data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google account data, some synced contacts or calendars, ringtones and some individual settings. Check the original phone manually for anything in those categories.

- Choose setup transfer when the Reno 17 is new or has been reset and you want Google’s standard Android migration screens.
- Choose Clone Phone when you want OPPO’s category list, direct Wi-Fi migration or an already-configured Reno 17, provided you have backed up destination data first.
- You can use setup transfer for the general phone copy and still use WhatsApp’s separate transfer process afterward; the WhatsApp procedure is what determines whether chats and media are preserved.
Move data from an iPhone to the Reno 17
Copy contacts, calendar events, photos and videos
OPPO’s iPhone migration support covers contacts, calendar events, photos and videos through Clone Phone. Open Clone Phone on the Reno 17, choose the new-device role and select the iPhone source when prompted. Follow the pairing and permission instructions, then select the categories shown by the app. Some iOS app data cannot cross to Android because the two platforms use different app formats and backup systems.

Transfer iPhone WhatsApp chats and media during Android setup
Google documents a different path for WhatsApp. During the Reno 17’s Android setup, connect the iPhone with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. Follow the setup wizard until it presents the WhatsApp transfer option, then scan the QR code with the iPhone when instructed. The conversations and media move directly between the phones. Keep the cable connected, the iPhone unlocked and both devices on their transfer screens until the process finishes.
If the Reno 17 has already completed setup, the documented cable-and-QR flow may require starting Android setup again. Before resetting anything, back up files already on the Reno 17 and verify that the iPhone contains the WhatsApp history you need.
Transfer WhatsApp from Android to Android
WhatsApp’s Chat Transfer is separate from the phone-wide copy. It is designed to move the full chat and media history directly between Android phones when its requirements are met.
Requirements
- Both phones must run Android 6 or later.
- Use the same phone number on the old and new phones for the transfer.
- Keep both phones close together with Wi-Fi enabled.
- Install or update WhatsApp as requested, but do not register the new phone before the transfer starts.
- Leave the old phone available until WhatsApp confirms that the transfer has finished.
Step-by-step Chat Transfer
- On the Reno 17, install WhatsApp but stop before completing registration if the app presents that choice.
- On the old phone, open WhatsApp and start the account-transfer or Chat Transfer option from WhatsApp’s settings or the on-screen migration prompt.
- On the Reno 17, verify the same phone number when WhatsApp asks for it, then wait for the QR code.
- Use the old phone to scan the QR code displayed on the Reno 17.
- Keep WhatsApp open on the old phone and accept the transfer prompts on both devices.
- Wait for the progress indicator and completion message. Do not uninstall WhatsApp or erase the old phone while the transfer is running.
- Finish verification and setup on the Reno 17, then open several old conversations and media items to check the result.
WhatsApp states that payment messages and media received through WhatsApp Channels are not transferred. The chat-transfer process does not replace a separate backup of files outside WhatsApp, so retain the old phone until you have checked anything important.

If you are changing your phone number
Change the number inside WhatsApp on the old phone before transferring the account. WhatsApp warns that registering a new number first can cause chat history to be lost. Complete the number-change process on the old device, confirm that your chats are still present, and then run the transfer with the resulting account.
Restore an Android backup when the old phone is unavailable
If the old Android phone is lost, damaged or already wiped, use the Google Account backup that was created before the problem. During Reno 17 setup, sign in with the Google Account used on the old phone and choose the option to restore a previous Android backup. Google’s documented restore can bring back backed-up app data, Wi-Fi settings and preferences. The amount restored depends on what the earlier backup contained and how recently it ran.
After setup, install WhatsApp, sign in with the same number and Google Account, and follow WhatsApp’s cloud-restore prompts if a compatible backup is detected. Google notes that WhatsApp chats and data are restored from the cloud after you sign in to the new Android device and open WhatsApp. A cloud restore is different from direct Chat Transfer: it cannot recover messages or media that were never included in the available backup.

- Contacts: Open the Contacts app, search for several names and verify that the correct Google or other account is syncing.
- Messages and calls: Check recent SMS threads and call history, especially conversations containing verification codes or delivery details.
- Photos and videos: Open older albums as well as recent camera files. Look for folders that were hidden or stored outside the normal camera directory.
- Files and downloads: Use the Files app to compare the old phone’s Downloads and document folders; Android setup may not copy them automatically.
- Apps: Launch essential apps, update them and complete any security or account verification they request.
- WhatsApp: Open old conversations, search for a known message and play a few transferred media files before retiring the old phone.
- Settings: Recheck Wi-Fi networks, alarms, wallpapers, notification permissions, Bluetooth pairings and any work-profile controls that did not carry over.
Troubleshoot common transfer failures
Clone Phone cannot pair the phones
Put the phones close together, turn Wi-Fi on, close other transfer utilities and restart Clone Phone on both devices. Re-scan the QR code from the Reno 17 rather than trying to reuse an expired pairing screen. If the connection still fails, use Android’s cable or wireless setup transfer instead.

The transfer stops or the Reno 17 reports insufficient space
Free storage by removing temporary downloads or selecting fewer videos and large files in the category screen. Restart both phones, charge them and run the transfer in smaller selections. Do not delete the original files until you have opened their copies on the Reno 17.
An app transferred but its data is missing
This is an expected limitation for incompatible apps and apps that do not expose their data to Android backup. Reinstall the app, sign in and use its own restore option. If the app stores data only on its original device or account, contact the app’s support team before wiping the old phone.
WhatsApp was opened or registered too early
Stop using WhatsApp on the Reno 17 and return to the transfer instructions. Chat Transfer requires the new phone to remain unregistered until migration begins. If the app has already completed setup, preserve the old phone and any available backup before attempting a reset or cloud restore; otherwise you could overwrite the only copy of the chats.

Some iPhone information is missing
Separate platform backups explain many gaps. Use Clone Phone for the iPhone categories it supports, and use the USB-C-to-Lightning setup flow for WhatsApp. Reinstall Android equivalents of iOS apps manually and sign in to their own accounts; iOS app databases cannot always be converted.
The old phone is gone and no data appears in restore
Confirm that the Reno 17 is signed in to the same Google Account used for the old backup. If no backup is listed, check whether backup was enabled on the old phone and whether the backup belongs to a different account. Without a matching backup, only data synchronized to an account or copied elsewhere can be recovered.
A safe order of operations
For the fewest surprises, use this sequence:
- Back up anything already on the Reno 17.
- Charge both phones, enable Wi-Fi and check destination storage.
- Run Clone Phone or Android setup transfer for the general data set.
- Before erasing the old phone, complete WhatsApp Chat Transfer or the iPhone cable-and-QR flow.
- Open representative contacts, photos, files, apps and WhatsApp chats on the Reno 17.
- Only after those checks, remove the old phone’s accounts or perform a factory reset.
This order separates broad device migration from WhatsApp’s account-sensitive process, preserves a fallback copy and accounts for the app-data limits that neither Clone Phone nor Android setup can bypass.
