Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse Samsung Smart Switch on your new Galaxy Tab to bring over selected apps and data from an Android phone or tablet, or import available content from an iPhone or iPad. Choose wireless or cable transfer and follow the prompts; if the tablet is already set up, you can still run Smart Switch without resetting it. What copies depends on the source device and content—Smart Switch is not a complete clone of every app, password, or protected file.
Choose the transfer method that fits your devices
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless Smart Switch | Moving data directly when you have both devices but no suitable cable | Keep the devices close and follow the connection prompts. Samsung’s US guide says to place them within 4 inches for its documented wireless workflow. Transfer time varies with the amount of data and connection strength. |
| Direct cable | A wired transfer between compatible devices | You may need a USB-OTG adapter, and the cable supplied with one device may not fit the other. Check the connectors before starting. |
| Windows or Mac backup and restore | Android users who prefer a computer-mediated transfer or need another route | Use Samsung Smart Switch on both the computer and mobile device. Samsung supports Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.9 or later; its computer app does not support Chromebooks. |
| iCloud import | iPhone or iPad users with data available in iCloud | Available content varies. Check that the photos you want are available to Smart Switch, and consider turning off iMessage if you want to receive text messages after switching. |
| Manual file copy or cloud storage | Moving selected photos, videos, or documents | Use a computer, external storage, Quick Share/Nearby Share, or compatible cloud storage. This moves selected files, not the full app setup and device data. |
Transfer from an Android phone or tablet
- Check space and connection. Samsung’s UK Android transfer FAQ, updated 14 May 2026, says both devices need at least 500 MB of free internal storage. For a wired transfer, the source device needs an MTP file-transfer option. Confirm the devices can connect by cable or wireless before you begin.
- Open Smart Switch on the Galaxy Tab. On a newer tablet, go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Smart Switch. On an older device, you may need to download Smart Switch. On the new tablet, choose Bring data from old device, then Receive data and Galaxy/Android.
- Connect the old device. Choose Wireless or Cable on the tablet and follow the prompts on both devices. For wireless transfer, Samsung’s US guide documents placing the devices within 4 inches of one another. For a cable transfer, use a compatible cable and an OTG adapter if the connection requires one.
- Select what to copy. Review the categories Smart Switch offers and select the data you want to move. Follow the on-screen prompts until the transfer finishes; duration depends on data volume and connection strength.
For a computer-based alternative, install Smart Switch for Windows or Mac on the computer and mobile device, back up the old device, then restore that backup to the Galaxy Tab. Allow enough storage on the computer for the backup. Samsung lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.9 or later for its computer app; Chromebooks are not compatible.

Transfer from an iPhone or iPad
Samsung documents wired, wireless, and iCloud import routes. During the Galaxy Tab’s initial setup, choose iPhone or iPad and follow the prompts. For a wired transfer, connect the Apple device using a compatible Lightning-to-USB-C or USB-C-to-USB-C cable, then tap Trust on the Apple device when prompted. Choose the available data you want to transfer.
For an iCloud import, select the iCloud option in Smart Switch, sign in to your Apple account, and choose the data available to import. Smart Switch may suggest Android apps corresponding to iOS apps, but an iOS app without an Android counterpart will not transfer as an app. Samsung recommends turning off iMessage if you want to receive text messages after switching.

Make sure the iPhone’s original photos are available
If iCloud Photos is using Optimize Storage, some full-resolution photos may be stored only in iCloud rather than on the iPhone. Samsung says Smart Switch can copy only photos physically present on the iPhone during transfer. To download originals first, Samsung’s iPhone guide points to Settings > Apps > Photos > Download and Keep Originals. Allow the downloads to finish before trying the transfer.
If your Galaxy Tab is already set up
You can launch Smart Switch after initial setup to transfer photos, files, and other data; a factory reset is not needed just to use Smart Switch. Samsung’s QR-code quick-setup route is different: it belongs to the initial setup flow, and using that route after setup requires a factory reset that erases local data. Do not reset the tablet unless you specifically want that setup route and have secured anything stored on it.

What may not transfer
Smart Switch moves supported data, not necessarily every part of the old device. Samsung’s support documentation describes these limits:
- Synced account data: Samsung says data from synced accounts is not transferred by Smart Switch; it appears on the new device after you sign in to the relevant account.
- Private app data and sign-ins: App data in private storage cannot be backed up. Samsung’s Android FAQ says most app data may transfer, but secure or encrypted data—including WhatsApp chats through the general Smart Switch flow—will not. Some services keep their data on their own servers, and some app login details may not transfer.
- Apps outside Play Store: Apps that were not installed from Play Store may need to be installed manually. From iOS, an app transfers only if there is an Android counterpart; Smart Switch may suggest an alternative.
- Protected media: DRM-protected content cannot be transferred. Samsung limits compatible music and video transfers to DRM-free content.
- Some synced contacts and calendars: Samsung’s content list excludes some externally synced contacts and calendar entries from backup. Check that those accounts and entries appear on the tablet after you sign in.
When to move files manually instead
If you only need a few photos, videos, or documents, a full Smart Switch migration may be unnecessary. Samsung describes transferring files with a computer, external storage, Quick Share/Nearby Share, or compatible cloud storage such as Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox. These approaches move selected files; they do not reproduce app data or all device settings.
