The most reliable method is to use the new tablet’s setup wizard: connect both tablets, choose Copy apps and data, pair the devices, and select what you want moved. Google supports either a compatible data cable or a wireless connection, and says both methods transfer the same supported data. If the old tablet is unavailable, restore a Google Account backup, then copy omitted folders such as Downloads manually. Do not erase the old tablet until you have opened important apps and checked your photos, documents, contacts, and other files on the new one.
Choose the right transfer method
Your best route depends on whether the old tablet still works, whether you can connect the tablets, and which data matters most. These are the three practical paths:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Method | When to use it | Connection or hardware | What it covers | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct transfer during setup | The old tablet is available, can be unlocked, and you can use it beside the new tablet. | Wireless transfer or a compatible data cable; an adapter may be needed when the ports differ. | Supported apps and app data, photos, videos, contacts, messages, settings, wallpaper, call history, and other categories shown by setup. | Google says the copy can take from a few minutes to more than an hour, depending on how much data is selected. |
| Google Account backup restore | The old tablet is lost, damaged, unavailable, or has already been reset, but a backup exists. | Internet access on the new tablet and the same Google Account used for the backup. | Backup-supported apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, SMS/MMS, and other supported items. Photos and videos may be handled through Google Photos. | Google says a restore can take up to 24 hours to finish completely. |
| Manual file copying | Setup omitted a folder, you need specific documents, or you want an extra copy before wiping the old tablet. | Drive, Google Photos, or a computer; an external USB drive is only useful if both tablets support it. | Downloads, PDFs, folders, locally stored media, and other files you select yourself. | Depends on the amount of data, connection speed, and whether you use cloud storage or a computer. |
No method guarantees that every app’s private data will return. App developers decide what Android backup can save, and some accounts or locally stored files require a separate sign-in or copy.

Prepare both Android tablets before you start
Keep the old tablet usable
- Charge both tablets and leave them connected to power if the transfer is large.
- Make sure the old tablet can be unlocked. You may need its PIN, pattern, password, or biometric confirmation during pairing.
- Do not reset, trade in, or delete anything from the old tablet yet.
Connect to Wi-Fi and confirm the account
Connect the tablets to a reliable Wi-Fi network. Confirm which Google Account is used on the old tablet, especially if more than one account is present. The same account is needed to restore that account’s backup on the new tablet.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Create or update a backup
On the old tablet, open its backup settings, turn backup on if appropriate, tap Back up now, and review the backup details. Photo and video backup is managed separately through Google Photos, so check its backup status as well. A backup is a safety net, not a complete image of the tablet: Google says apps cannot all back up or restore every setting and item of private data.
Check storage on the new tablet
Look at the new tablet’s available storage before selecting large photo, video, or music collections. During setup you can choose which categories to copy. If there is not enough space, leave out large items temporarily and copy only the folders you need after setup.
Inspect ports and the cable if you plan to connect them
Check the connector on each tablet. Use a cable that supports data transfer, not a cable intended only for charging. If the connectors do not match, you may need an adapter designed for those exact ports. Google’s setup flow offers wireless transfer as an alternative when a suitable cable is unavailable.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
- Start the new tablet. Turn it on, choose the requested language and region, and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Select the copy option. When setup asks whether you want to copy apps and data from an Android device, choose that option rather than setting up as a completely new device.
- Choose wired or wireless transfer. Use a compatible data cable and any necessary adapter, or select the wireless option offered by setup. Google states that both methods support the same data.
- Pair the tablets. Follow the new tablet’s instructions. You may be shown a code, a confirmation request, or a prompt to scan or approve the connection on the old tablet.
- Unlock and approve on the old tablet. Enter its screen lock when requested and accept the transfer prompts on both screens.
- Select categories. Review the apps, photos, videos, messages, contacts, settings, and other categories presented. Deselect items that would exceed the new tablet’s storage.
- Leave both tablets connected. Keep them powered and near each other. Do not unplug a cable, turn off Wi-Fi, or restart either device until setup reports that copying is complete.
- Finish setup and inspect the result. Sign in to accounts when requested, allow apps to update, and then use the verification checklist below before changing anything on the old tablet.
The setup copy is not a perfect clone. Downloads such as PDF files, hidden-folder media, apps installed outside Google Play, data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google accounts, and some settings may be excluded. Plan a manual copy for those items.
Restore a Google Account backup instead
Use this route when the old tablet cannot be used or when you already completed a backup. Start the new tablet’s setup and choose the option to restore from an existing backup. Sign in with the Google Account that created the backup, select the relevant tablet backup when prompted, and choose the available content.
Google says a backup may include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. What returns depends on each app’s backup support. Photos and videos may be restored through Google Photos rather than the device backup itself. A restore can continue completing after the initial setup, so keep the new tablet online and check again later.
Android version differences matter. Google warns that restoring a backup made on a newer Android version to a tablet running an older version can be incomplete. Install available system updates on the new tablet before relying on the restore, provided the tablet supports those updates.

If an app appears but its data is missing, open the app, sign in to the same account, and check its own cloud-sync or backup controls. Some games, authenticator apps, note tools, and work applications require an export, recovery code, or administrator-assisted migration that Android’s general backup cannot provide.
Copy missing files manually after setup
Use Drive or another cloud copy
For documents and folders, upload them from the old tablet to Drive, then sign in to the same account on the new tablet and download or organize them there. This is useful when the tablets are far apart or when setup has already finished. Keep the original files on the old tablet until you open several downloaded copies on the new one.
Use Google Photos for pictures and videos
Open Google Photos on the old tablet and confirm that the needed photos and videos have finished backing up. On the new tablet, sign in to the same Google Account and allow the library to load. Check older albums and recent pictures, not only the first screen of thumbnails. Photos stored in hidden folders or in a manufacturer gallery folder may not be included, so inspect the old tablet directly if something is missing.
Copy folders through a computer
Connect the old tablet to a computer, unlock it, and choose its file-transfer mode if the tablet presents a USB option. Copy important folders—especially Downloads, Documents, locally stored music, recordings, and app-created files—to the computer. Disconnect the old tablet safely, connect the new tablet, and copy the folders into the appropriate locations. A computer is often more dependable than assuming a particular tablet supports an external USB drive.

Check Downloads and hidden locations
Setup transfer specifically excludes downloaded files such as PDFs in Google’s documented flow. On the old tablet, open the file manager and review Downloads and any folders used by browsers, messaging apps, scanners, or document editors. Also check for media stored in hidden folders. Copy these files through Drive or a computer before deleting anything.
What usually transfers—and what may not
| Category | What Google’s setup guidance says | What you should verify yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Apps | Apps available through the supported setup flow can be copied, along with some app data. | Apps installed outside Google Play, paid-app sign-ins, subscriptions, and apps with their own migration process. |
| Photos and videos | Supported device media can be copied; Google Photos can back up and restore cloud-synced items. | Recent and older photos, hidden-folder media, edited originals, downloads, and files stored only in a manufacturer gallery. |
| Contacts | Contacts stored on the device or SIM may be copied. | Contacts synchronized with a non-Google service or stored only inside another account. |
| Messages | SMS/MMS and multimedia in text messages may transfer. | Messages held by third-party apps, encrypted-chat history, and media saved in app-specific folders. |
| Settings and personalization | Most phone settings, wallpaper, and call history are listed as supported categories. | Ringtones, certain settings, accessibility choices, and manufacturer-specific customizations. |
| Files and downloads | General setup transfer does not promise downloaded files such as PDFs. | Downloads, documents, recordings, locally stored music, and work files must be checked and often copied manually. |
| Accounts and managed data | Google Account data can be restored when supported. | Non-Google accounts, work or school information, managed apps, and organization-controlled files. |
Availability varies by tablet model and Android version. Treat the categories displayed on your own setup screens as the final authority for that transfer.

The old tablet does not appear
- Confirm that both tablets are connected to the internet and that the old tablet is unlocked.
- Read the pairing prompt on each screen and approve the matching request.
- If wireless pairing fails, use the cable option offered by setup. If the cable fails, try the wireless option instead.
- Check that a cable and adapter support data transfer and fit both ports.
The transfer stopped or was skipped
Some devices expose a later Finish setting up prompt or a Settings option to copy data from another device. Look for those options on the new tablet, but expect their availability to depend on the manufacturer and Android version. If some data already transferred, Google says additional data must come from the same old device.

Sign in to the same account inside the app and look for its own sync, restore, or export command. Check whether the app uses a separate cloud service. If the data is business- or school-managed, ask the administrator before attempting a reset. Android backup support is app-specific, so reinstalling an app does not necessarily recreate its private files.

The new tablet runs an older Android release
Install supported system updates before restoring again. Google warns that moving a backup from a newer Android version to an older one can leave the restore incomplete. If an update is unavailable, plan to copy files manually and reconfigure unsupported settings.
A work or school tablet blocks the move
Management policy can restrict transfer or backup of organization data. Managed apps may require administrator approval, and some files cannot legally or technically be copied to a personal tablet. Ask the organization’s administrator which migration method is approved.
Verify everything before erasing the old tablet
Use the old tablet as your reference until the new one passes a deliberate check. On the new tablet:
- Open the apps you rely on and confirm that you are signed in.
- Check both recent and older photos and videos, including albums you use regularly.
- Open Downloads, Documents, recordings, and other folders containing irreplaceable files.
- Search for important contacts and confirm that calendars or other account-based data are present.
- Test app-specific information such as game saves, notes, authenticator entries, offline maps, and downloaded media.
- Confirm that work or school apps and files comply with your organization’s policy.
Only after these checks should you remove accounts, perform a factory reset, or hand over the old tablet. Keeping it intact is your recovery option if a missing file or login appears later.
When a manufacturer’s transfer tool makes sense
Google points Samsung tablet owners to Smart Switch as an additional option. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions for the exact models involved, because supported devices, cables, and transfer categories can change. Do not assume that two tablets from the same manufacturer are compatible without checking their model-specific guidance. The general Android setup transfer remains the baseline when it is available.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- Start with the new tablet’s setup wizard and choose Copy apps and data.
- Wireless and wired setup transfers are both supported and cover the same data categories in Google’s guidance.
- Back up the old tablet first, and check Google Photos separately for photo and video coverage.
- Expect to copy Downloads, PDFs, hidden-folder media, and some app data manually.
- Keep both tablets charged and unlocked, and do not erase the old one until verification is complete.
