How to Transfer and Play Your Own GBA Game Files on an FPGA Handheld

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On an Analogue Pocket, the documented way to play GBA files from a microSD card is to install a third-party openFPGA GBA core, add the required BIOS file, copy your legally usable game files into the core’s assets folder, and launch the core from the Pocket’s openFPGA menu. This is separate from the Pocket’s normal cartridge support and is specific to the core’s instructions; another FPGA handheld or another core may use different filenames and folders.

Check Analogue’s current firmware and the GBA core’s current README immediately before you begin. The firmware listing available on September 4, 2026 showed version 2.7, but that is not a promise that it remains the newest release.

What this setup does—and what it does not mean

The Analogue Pocket supports Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges through its cartridge slot. Analogue’s product page states: “Analogue Pocket does not play copyrighted rom files, it plays legacy game cartridges via the cartridge slot.” A third-party openFPGA core creates a separate, file-based workflow on the SD card. The existence of that technical workflow does not grant permission to download, share or use games you are not entitled to use, and it does not turn Analogue’s cartridge-only product statement into an endorsement of particular ROM files.

This guide therefore covers a Pocket running the Spiritualized GBA openFPGA core and files you are entitled to use. Applicable law differs by jurisdiction; the documentation cited here does not establish a universal rule about making or using personal backups.

What you need before copying anything

Requirement Purpose What is documented
Analogue Pocket Runs the openFPGA core and provides the microSD slot. The product page documents GBA cartridge compatibility and a microSD slot: Analogue Pocket.
microSD card Stores the core package, BIOS and game files. The core README requires an SD card. No supported source specifies a capacity, speed class or brand, so choose one based on your own storage needs rather than treating an unverified specification as required.
Current Pocket firmware Provides the current openFPGA software environment. Use the instructions and current release shown on Analogue Pocket Support. The page listed firmware v2.7 dated 2026-09-04 when checked.
Spiritualized GBA core Implements GBA hardware on the Pocket’s FPGA. Get the package from the maintainer’s repository and follow its current README: openFPGA-GBA.
gba_bios.bin Required BIOS asset for this core. The README requires this exact filename in /assets/gba/common/. Do not treat the requirement as a license or a source for downloading a BIOS.
Your GBA game file The content the core will load. The README says to put ROM files in the same assets/gba/common folder. Use only files you are legally entitled to use.

A USB microSD reader can make desktop copying convenient, but none of the cited documentation says one is mandatory. The Pocket itself is the required device; the exact card capacity and speed rating remain unspecified by the sources.

Step 1: Check and update Pocket firmware

  1. Open Analogue’s Pocket Support page on the day you set up the core.
  2. Read the currently listed firmware version and the accompanying installation instructions. The dated listing available for this guide was v2.7, released 2026-09-04; a later listing may supersede it.
  3. Apply the update exactly as Analogue documents, then restart the Pocket before installing or testing the core.

Firmware and core packages evolve independently. If a newer core README calls out a firmware prerequisite, use that requirement even if your Pocket was working with an older combination. Avoid copying an old directory layout from a forum post when the maintainer’s current instructions differ.

Step 2: Install the GBA openFPGA core on the SD card

Analogue describes openFPGA core packages as ZIP archives that contain the directory structure to extract onto an SD card. The Spiritualized README likewise instructs users to unzip the core contents onto the root of the Pocket SD card in the appropriate folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download the current release or package linked by the Spiritualized GBA README.
  2. Power down the Pocket and remove its microSD card. Insert the card into your computer, either directly or with a USB reader.
  3. Open the core archive and extract its contents to the SD card’s root. “Root” means the top level of the card, not a newly created folder named after the ZIP file.
  4. Keep the folders supplied by the archive intact. Do not merge files into similarly named folders by hand unless the current README explicitly tells you to.
  5. Eject the card safely, return it to the Pocket and power on.

The practical distinction is important: extracting core.zip into a new /core/ folder can leave the Pocket with an unintended extra directory level, so the openFPGA menu may not see the core. The maintainer’s current archive and instructions take precedence if they change the package layout.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Step 3: Add the required BIOS file

For the Spiritualized core, create or use this exact directory:

/assets/gba/common/

Copy a BIOS file named exactly gba_bios.bin into that folder. The filename, spelling and location are part of the core’s documented requirement. This guide does not provide a BIOS download or claim that any particular source is licensed; obtain a file only through a lawful route available to you.

Do not place the BIOS beside the ZIP archive, inside a desktop download folder, or in a second assets directory created by an incorrect extraction. On systems that hide extensions, verify that the file is not actually named gba_bios.bin.bin. If the README changes the required name or path in a later release, follow the newer instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Copy your GBA game file

  1. Use a GBA file you are entitled to use under the law that applies where you live.
  2. Copy the file into the same folder used for the BIOS: /assets/gba/common/.
  3. Leave the game file’s extension and contents as supplied by your lawful source unless the current core README specifies a supported format or naming rule.
  4. Eject the card safely, place it back in the Pocket and start the device.

The README’s exact placement instruction is: “Place rom files in the assets/gba/common folder.” It does not establish permission to obtain commercial downloads. Analogue’s separate product-page caveat about copyrighted ROM files still applies to the company’s official product claims, while this third-party core documents a technical method.

What the finished card should look like

The relevant portion of the card should resemble this simplified tree:

/assets/
  gba/
    common/
      gba_bios.bin
      your-game-file.gba

The archive may add other openFPGA folders and metadata; do not delete those. The tree above only shows the location that matters for the BIOS and game file. Your game’s filename can differ, but the BIOS filename and the assets/gba/common path must match the core instructions.

Step 5: Launch the GBA core and game

  1. With the prepared card inserted, power on the Pocket.
  2. Open the Pocket’s openFPGA area from the system interface.
  3. Select the installed Spiritualized GBA core.
  4. Use the core’s file-selection screen to choose the GBA file in the common assets location, if the current core presents a picker.
  5. Start the game and use the core’s documented controls or menu for any save, reset or display options.

The maintainer’s basic launch direction is to select the core in openFPGA after placing the required assets. Menu labels can change with firmware and core revisions, so use the on-screen wording shown by your current build rather than an older video tutorial.

Troubleshooting: files or the core do not appear

The GBA core is missing from openFPGA

  • Power off and remove the card, then inspect whether the archive was extracted to the card’s root rather than into an extra top-level folder.
  • Compare the folders on the card with the current core README and Analogue’s openFPGA package guidance at Analogue’s openFPGA overview.
  • Confirm that the archive was not left compressed. The Pocket needs the extracted package structure.
  • Check firmware again on the support page if the core’s current release lists a minimum version.

The core launches but reports a missing BIOS

  • Confirm the path is exactly /assets/gba/common/, including the lowercase folder names shown by the README.
  • Confirm the filename is exactly gba_bios.bin, with no duplicated extension or accidental spaces.
  • Make sure the file is on the Pocket’s card, not merely on your computer.

The BIOS is present but no game is listed

  • Copy the game file into the same /assets/gba/common/ folder; do not put it in a separate personal folder unless a newer README says that is supported.
  • Check that you copied the intended file and that the card was safely ejected before reinserting it.
  • Re-read the current core instructions for supported file types or naming changes. A directory requirement inferred from the README is a practical check, not a claim of independent testing.

The Pocket does not recognize the card

  • Power the Pocket down fully, reseat the microSD card and try again.
  • Verify the card still contains the core folders when viewed on a computer.
  • Consult the current Pocket support documentation for card and firmware guidance rather than applying an unverified capacity or formatting rule; the cited sources do not specify a required card size, speed class or brand.

Choosing a transfer method

Use a card reader for the normal setup

Removing the microSD card and copying the extracted package, BIOS and game file with a computer or USB reader is the straightforward method described by the core’s installation workflow. It lets you inspect the complete directory tree before returning the card to the Pocket. A reader is a convenience, not a documented prerequisite.

USB SD Access is a developer/debugging feature

Analogue’s Debugging Aids documentation describes a USB SD Access option that mounts the Pocket’s SD card to a computer or phone over USB-C when enabled. It reports approximately 700 KB/s and does not recommend the method for large files. That figure applies specifically to this debugging option; it is not a rating for every SD-card reader or for ordinary card copying.

Because USB SD Access is documented as a debugging aid rather than the standard core-installation path, use a card reader for a large archive or several games when possible. Do not infer that a separate reader has the same 700 KB/s speed.

Playing a cartridge versus loading a file

There are three distinct goals that are often confused:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Goal Method Files and limitations
Play a physical GBA cartridge Insert the cartridge into the Pocket’s cartridge slot and use the device’s ordinary cartridge support. No openFPGA BIOS or ROM-folder setup is required for the cartridge itself.
Play an entitled GBA file Install the third-party Spiritualized GBA openFPGA core, add gba_bios.bin, place the game file in /assets/gba/common/, and launch the core. This is a separate file-based workflow. It does not change Analogue’s product-page statement about copyrighted ROM files.
Make a backup from a cartridge Use a compatible third-party cartridge utility, if available, to identify and dump the cartridge. Utility availability and behavior can change. Save restoration limits are especially important for GBA.

If your immediate objective is simply to play a cartridge you own, the cartridge slot is the simpler route. If you need a file for the openFPGA workflow, the backup process introduces its own hardware, software and legal considerations.

Optional cartridge dumping route and its limits

The openFPGA Library lists kroy.CartTools 0.9999.20260920.1, dated September 20, 2026, as a third-party utility intended to identify and dump GB, GBC and GBA cartridges through the Pocket’s cartridge slot: kroy.CartTools listing.

That listing explicitly says save restore is alpha and that GBA saves are not restored. It describes verified save restoration for several named GB/GBC cases, while other cases remain untested. Do not extend those claims to GBA, and do not assume that a cartridge dump automatically includes a recoverable GBA save. The utility is a third-party option whose availability and behavior may change; it is not required to install or run the Spiritualized core.

Keeping the setup maintainable

  • Record the Pocket firmware version and the core release that worked together so you can identify what changed after an update.
  • Before replacing a core package, read its current README for renamed folders, new assets or changed launch behavior.
  • Keep a backup copy of your own files and configuration on your computer; the Pocket’s card is removable storage, not a backup strategy by itself.
  • After a firmware update, test the core with one known-good file before reorganizing the card.
  • Do not delete unrelated openFPGA folders supplied by the package while trying to tidy the card.

Important scope and legal boundaries

Analogue’s official materials describe openFPGA as an ecosystem for loading third-party FPGA cores and their assets from an SD-card package structure. The Spiritualized repository supplies the GBA-specific instructions used here. Those facts establish how the files are arranged and launched; they do not establish that Analogue endorses a particular core, BIOS source or copyrighted game file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the workflow only with software and backups you are allowed to possess and use. Because this guide does not analyze jurisdiction-specific law, check the rules that apply to you if you are unsure whether creating, downloading or using a backup is permitted.

Quick checklist

  1. Check the current firmware and follow the instructions at Pocket Support.
  2. Download the current Spiritualized GBA core from its repository.
  3. Extract the package to the microSD card’s root without adding an unintended folder level.
  4. Place gba_bios.bin at /assets/gba/common/.
  5. Place your entitled GBA file in that same folder.
  6. Reinsert the card, open openFPGA and launch the GBA core.
  7. If something is missing, check the exact path, filename and extraction level before trying a different card or tool.
