You can transfer eligible, locally stored music from iTunes to many USB-storage music players by copying the audio files into the player’s music folder. First confirm that the songs are actually downloaded and that the player supports their format. If you mean an iPod, use Apple’s sync process instead; subscription downloads and cloud-library entries are not ordinary files you can copy to a generic player.
First identify what is in your iTunes library
An iTunes library is an index of music, not necessarily a folder containing every track. A song entry can point to a file stored elsewhere on your computer; if that file is moved or deleted, the library entry may stop working. Apple explains how iTunes handles imported files and references in its guide to importing media.

- Cloud-only items: A library listing does not prove the audio file is downloaded to the computer. Check that the track is available locally before copying.
- Apple Music subscription downloads: Treat these as subscription access, not as ordinary files to convert or copy to a generic player. Apple’s terms say access to iCloud Music Library content uploaded to its servers ends when membership ends. See the Apple Media Services terms.
Find the actual music files before copying
On Windows, Apple identifies MusiciTunesiTunes Media as the default location for files added to iTunes, but your library may use a different location or contain references to files elsewhere. Check the selected track’s file location in iTunes rather than assuming every library entry is inside that folder.

If your music is scattered across folders, make a staging folder and copy eligible audio files into it. Copying preserves the originals; do not move or delete source files while setting up the player.
Check which formats the player can play
Read the manual for the exact player model. Support varies: SanDisk’s instructions say some of its listed models accept DRM-free AAC/M4A files, while other listed models require conversion to MP3. Those examples are not a universal rule, and SanDisk notes that its MP3 players have reached end of support. Its transfer instructions are useful as an example of file copying, not as a recommendation of a current model.

If the player supports a file as it is, avoid converting it unnecessarily. If its manual requires MP3, use a supported conversion option for eligible files and keep the originals. Apple lists AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3, and WAV encoding options in its iTunes import settings. Apple describes MP3 as an option for other apps and MP3 players, and notes that higher quality increases file size. The player’s documentation—not a one-size-fits-all setting—should determine the compatible format and limits.
Copy music to a generic USB-storage player
Use the transfer method specified by the player maker. For the SanDisk workflow documented in its support article, the process is to connect the player, open its Music folder in File Explorer or Finder, and drag selected tracks from iTunes or Apple Music into that folder.

- Connect the player using the cable or connection method specified in its manual.
- Open the player’s storage in File Explorer on Windows or Finder on macOS, then open its Music folder if one is provided.
- Select eligible local tracks in iTunes or locate their audio files in the staging folder. Do not select subscription items that are not transferable files.
- Drag the files into the player folder and wait for the copy to finish. SanDisk warns not to disconnect during transfer.
- Eject the player safely, then test a few copied tracks on the device before changing or deleting any source files.
If the portable player is an iPod
An iPod uses Apple’s device-sync workflow, not the generic drag-and-drop method. Apple’s current Windows instructions use the Apple Devices app to sync all music or selected artists, albums, genres, and playlists. Apple also documents iTunes syncing for Apple devices on Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier. Apple says Apple Music subscription songs cannot be synced using the Windows device-sync method while Sync Library is enabled. Pay attention to any prompt such as “Remove and Sync”: Apple notes that this can erase and replace selected content on the device.

When copied tracks will not play
Check the cause before trying another transfer:
- The file is missing: The library entry may refer to a file that is no longer where iTunes expects it. Locate the original audio file or download an eligible local copy.
- The format is unsupported: Compare the file extension and format with the player manual. Convert only when needed and only for content you are entitled to use.
- The item is subscription content or protected: Subscription access is not equivalent to owning a portable audio file. Apple’s terms distinguish DRM-free from DRM-protected content and describe limits on compatible use; do not attempt to remove DRM.
- The copy is incomplete or organized unexpectedly: Reconnect only after safely ejecting, check that the transfer finished, and inspect the player for missing files or unexpected folder nesting.
Apple’s Media Services terms state that DRM-protected content can be used on up to five computers and devices synced from those computers, while DRM-free content can be used on a reasonable number of compatible devices. The terms also say access to iCloud Music Library content uploaded to Apple’s servers ends when an Apple Music membership ends.
