How to Transfer a Project Zomboid Server to a New Host Without Losing Your World

To move a Project Zomboid server safely, stop the old instance, create a dated rollback backup, install the same game branch on the new host, copy both the server profile and the complete multiplayer save, reproduce the mod and network settings, and test a remote connection before players return. Keeping the original server name during the first boot is important because database files can refer to it.

What the migration actually moves

A Project Zomboid migration is more than uploading a world folder. A usable transfer has four parts that must agree with one another:

  • Persistent world: The complete Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<servername> directory contains the campaign state, including items, zombies, players, vehicles and player map data.
  • Server profile: The matching files in Zomboid/Server/ define the server name, sandbox behavior, spawn regions and spawn points. Typical files include <servername>.ini, <servername>_SandboxVars.lua, and the spawn-region and spawn-point files.
  • Content records: Preserve both Steam Workshop IDs and enabled mod IDs. Copying the world without its mod list can produce missing-content errors or a world that behaves differently.
  • Identity and access: Keep the original server name and reproduce the network settings, including the ports used by the selected Project Zomboid branch.

Copying only the save directory is therefore incomplete. The profile and content records determine how the destination opens that save.

Choose the destination before touching the source

You can move to a machine you administer yourself or to a managed game-server host. The files are the same in principle, but the operational work differs.

Consideration Self-managed machine or VPS Managed game-server host
Administration You handle SteamCMD or the dedicated-server tool, the start script, updates, permissions, firewall and backups. The provider usually supplies a control panel or file manager, but you must follow its upload and restart workflow.
File control Direct access to the installation and Zomboid data directories. Access depends on the provider; confirm that existing multiplayer saves and profile files can be uploaded.
Network setup You configure the host firewall and router or cloud firewall. The provider normally exposes ports, but you still need to confirm the assigned game and query settings.
Backups and restore You choose the schedule, storage and rollback method. Backup tools vary. Verify what is included and perform a test restore rather than assuming a backup contains the world and mods.
Build and mod support You can install the branch you need, subject to your own administration. Confirm the provider supports the exact source build, branch and mod workflow before paying or uploading.

Managed documentation from providers such as Host Havoc describes uploading an existing local multiplayer save so a group can continue its progress. Treat that as a workflow example, not a guarantee for every host: check current build support, paths, mod handling and restore behavior for the service you select.

Record the source server state

Make an inventory while the old server is still working. This prevents a migration from becoming a guessing exercise after shutdown.

  • Write down the exact Project Zomboid build and branch used by the server and by clients.
  • Record the server name exactly as it appears in the profile filenames.
  • List the operating system and the location of the Zomboid data directory.
  • Export or copy the complete Workshop ID and enabled mod ID lists.
  • Note the configured game and query ports and any firewall or router rules.
  • Record when a client last joined successfully; this gives you a known-good comparison after the move.

Do not change the game version, rename the server or remove mods as part of this inventory. A migration is easiest to diagnose when the destination initially matches the source.

Stop the old server and create a dated backup

Stop the source instance through the method you normally use and wait until its process has exited. Never copy a multiplayer world while the server is running or writing files; the resulting copy can be incomplete or internally inconsistent.

  1. Announce a maintenance window and prevent players from reconnecting.
  2. Stop the server cleanly using its normal control-panel action or start-script method.
  3. Confirm that the server process is no longer running before opening or copying its files.
  4. Create a backup directory whose name includes the date, such as zomboid-backup-2026-10-15.
  5. Place the complete multiplayer save, all active profile files, Workshop and mod records, and a note of the backup date in that backup.
  6. Keep the backup separate from the destination upload so an accidental overwrite cannot destroy your rollback copy.

The backup is your recovery point if the destination generates a new world, fails to load a mod or reveals an account problem. Do not delete the source data until a remote test has passed.

Find the files on the old host

Windows

Windows normally stores Project Zomboid data under C:Users<username>Zomboid. The active profile is in ZomboidServer; the persistent multiplayer world is in ZomboidSavesMultiplayer<servername>.

Copy the whole server-specific save directory, not just individual map chunks. In the profile directory, include the matching .ini, SandboxVars, spawn-region and spawn-point files, along with any files used to describe enabled Workshop or mods.

Linux

Linux normally uses ~/Zomboid/. The equivalent locations are ~/Zomboid/Server/ for the profile and ~/Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<servername> for the world.

When copying between Linux accounts or machines, retain the directory structure and make sure the account that runs the dedicated server can read and write the copied files. The destination must see the same relative paths expected by the server.

Install the destination on the same branch

Install the Project Zomboid dedicated-server tool through Steam or SteamCMD, following the dedicated-server guide for your operating system. Use the same branch and build recorded from the source; clients should use that same build as well. A different build can change file formats, settings or mod compatibility and makes a clean diagnosis difficult.

The dedicated-server documentation supplies a StartServer64 start script. Install first, but do not let the new instance create a fresh production world under a different name before you have copied the source profile and save. If you perform a brief startup test, stop it and remove only the test data you created; never overwrite the backup.

Copy the profile, world and mod records

  1. Stop the destination server if it is running.
  2. Place the source profile files in the destination Zomboid/Server/ directory.
  3. Place the complete source folder Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<servername> in the destination Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/ directory.
  4. Copy the Workshop ID records and the enabled mod ID records used by the source server.
  5. Check that the profile filenames and the save-folder name use the same server name, including capitalization and punctuation.
  6. Ensure the server process has access to the copied files before starting it.

The save directory is where the persistent campaign resides; the profile files reproduce the rules under which that campaign runs. Omitting either side can make the server appear to start while producing the wrong behavior.

Keep the original server name for first boot

Use the original server name and filenames for the initial destination startup. Transfer guidance warns that database files can refer to that name, so changing it during the move can make existing records inaccessible even when the world folder is present.

If you eventually want a new public name, first complete a successful migration and a backup. Then make the rename as a controlled change: update every related profile and save reference, start the renamed copy with the old backup available, and verify player and world data before discarding the original naming scheme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reproduce mods without changing the content set

Workshop IDs identify the content the server must obtain, while enabled mod IDs identify what the profile loads. Preserve both lists exactly as they were recorded.

  • Do not use the migration as an opportunity to update, remove or reorder mods.
  • Make sure the destination can download or access every required Workshop item.
  • Check the server log after startup for missing Workshop items, disabled mods or load-order errors.
  • Have a client with the same mod set join during validation; a server-only startup check cannot prove that clients can load the content.

If a mod is no longer available or the destination cannot retrieve it, restore the backup and resolve that content issue before inviting players. Starting without a required mod can alter the experience or prevent the existing world from loading as intended.

Recreate firewall and port access

Apply the destination’s firewall, router or cloud-network rules rather than assuming the old host’s rules followed the files. Verify the configured game and query ports for the exact branch you installed. One setup guide lists UDP 16261 and UDP 16262 as defaults, but port values can differ between branches and configurations; treat those numbers as a check, not a universal requirement.

  1. Read the destination profile to identify the ports it is configured to use.
  2. Allow those ports in the host firewall.
  3. If the machine is behind a router, forward the same ports to the new machine.
  4. Confirm that any cloud firewall or provider-level network rule also permits them.
  5. Use a remote connection from outside the host’s local network for the final test.

A server can load the old world perfectly and still be unreachable if the destination’s network rules are not updated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate the new host before cutover

Start the destination with the original name and copied files, then validate from a remote client before telling the group to switch.

  • World identity: Confirm that the existing map and campaign load. A newly generated starting area is evidence that the server is looking at the wrong path or name.
  • Character continuity: Join with at least one existing player account and confirm the character, inventory and location are present.
  • Vehicles and map state: Check a known vehicle and a previously visited area. These are useful indicators that the complete multiplayer save was copied.
  • Rules and spawns: Verify a sandbox setting and the expected spawn behavior against the source profile.
  • Mods: Enter an area or use an item supplied by a known mod and confirm the client does not request missing content.
  • Connectivity: Perform the join from a network outside the destination’s local network to exercise the real firewall and port path.
  • Logs: Inspect the server log for errors, missing files, failed Workshop downloads and database warnings.

Keep the old host stopped or isolated while this test runs. Running both instances publicly under the same identity can split player progress and create uncertainty about which copy is authoritative.

Cut over and retain a rollback path

After the remote test passes, announce the new address and connection details to players. Preserve the dated backup and the untouched source data for a reasonable observation period rather than deleting them immediately.

If the destination fails later, stop it before making further changes. Restore the profile and complete multiplayer save from the dated backup, then bring up one authoritative instance. Do not merge two independently played copies; Project Zomboid does not provide a safe way to reconcile divergent world histories by simply copying folders.

Common migration failures and fixes

The destination creates a new world

Stop the destination and check that the save folder is exactly under Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/, that its name matches the profile’s server name, and that the entire source folder—not a parent directory or a partial selection—was copied. Restore from the dated backup if any files were overwritten.

Players or vehicles are missing

Confirm that you copied the complete multiplayer save, including its per-player map and world data, rather than only profile files. Test with the original player account before allowing further play.

The server starts but mods are missing

Compare the destination’s Workshop IDs and enabled mod IDs with the source inventory. Check the log for download or load errors and verify that the client uses the same content set. Do not compensate by removing mods from the live world until you have a backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players cannot connect remotely

Check the destination profile’s configured ports, then verify the host firewall, router forwarding and any provider or cloud firewall. Confirm the remote test is genuinely outside the local network; a local connection can succeed even when inbound access is blocked.

A rename breaks existing data

Return to the original server name and filenames, restart from the known-good copy, and make a separate backup before attempting a controlled rename. Database references may depend on the original name.

The account behavior differs after moving hosts

Player-hosted and dedicated-server account handling can differ. Test with a backup before deleting or replacing any account database, and retain the source copy until existing players have authenticated successfully.

When a managed host is the better route

A managed service can reduce the work of maintaining SteamCMD, updates, network rules and scheduled backups. It is a sensible option when you want a control panel and do not want to administer a machine, but convenience does not remove the need for a controlled transfer.

Before uploading, ask the provider to confirm:

  • Support for the exact Project Zomboid branch and build currently used.
  • The file-manager or upload path for Zomboid/Server/ and Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/.
  • How Workshop IDs and enabled mod IDs are entered or imported.
  • Whether the service allows the original server name and existing account data.
  • Which game and query ports are assigned and how remote access is configured.
  • What its backups include and how you can perform a restore.

Upload the files only after the provider confirms those details, then perform the same character, vehicle, map, mod and remote-join checks described above. A provider’s statement that local saves can be transferred is useful, but your own restore test is the evidence that matters for this particular world.

Final migration checklist

  • Exact source build and branch recorded.
  • Server name, operating system, mods, Workshop IDs and ports recorded.
  • Source server stopped cleanly before copying.
  • Dated backup contains the complete multiplayer save, profile files and mod records.
  • Destination installed on the same branch and build.
  • Profile copied to Zomboid/Server/.
  • Complete world copied to Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<servername>.
  • Original server name retained for the first boot.
  • Destination firewall, router and provider rules match its configured ports.
  • Remote validation confirms an existing character, vehicle, map state and mod.
  • Old host remains stopped or isolated until the destination is accepted.
  • Rollback backup remains available after cutover.
