How to Transfer a Minecraft World Between Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC

Use Minecraft Bedrock Edition with Minecraft Realms. Upload the world from the device that currently stores it, then download it on the other device. The downloaded file appears as a separate copy in the destination device’s Worlds list, so your original remains available unless you deliberately replace a Realm slot.

This method works across supported Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Windows 10/11 and mobile Bedrock devices. The key checks are edition, current game version and Microsoft-account access to the same Realm. Java Edition follows a different process.

The official method: Bedrock Edition plus Realms

Minecraft’s supported cross-device workflow is built around Bedrock Edition and an active Minecraft Realms trial or paid subscription. Realms stores a world online so another supported Bedrock device can download it. This covers transfers such as Xbox to PC, Switch to Xbox, PlayStation 5 to Switch and similar combinations.

Bedrock is available on Windows 10 and 11, Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. The source and destination must both run compatible, up-to-date Bedrock versions. A Java Edition world is not interchangeable with this console-oriented Bedrock process.

Realms is not a cable or a direct console-to-console copy. The source uploads a selected local world to a Realm slot, and the destination downloads that Realm world into its own local Worlds list. That distinction matters: the Realm is the online handoff location, while each device retains its own local copy.

Check these requirements before moving the world

  • Edition: Confirm that the source world is Bedrock Edition, not Java Edition. On a Windows computer, do not confuse a Java installation with the Bedrock version included in the Windows release.
  • Versions: Update Minecraft on both devices to the most recent available version before uploading or downloading. Version mismatches are a common reason a Realm or world behaves unexpectedly.
  • Realms access: Start or use an active Realms trial or paid subscription. The transfer workflow depends on a Realm slot; it is not documented as a free direct USB operation between consoles.
  • Microsoft account: Sign in on the destination with the Microsoft account that can access the Realm containing the uploaded world. Console network accounts and Microsoft accounts are not interchangeable labels, so verify the account shown inside Minecraft.
  • Internet connection: Keep the source online for the complete upload and the destination online for the complete download. Do not close the game when the progress operation is still running.
  • Local storage: Leave enough free space on the destination for another copy of the world. A download creates a local copy rather than replacing the existing local save automatically.
  • Safe source copy: Do not delete or overwrite the source until the destination copy opens correctly and the important builds, inventory and progress are present.

Edition is the first compatibility test. After that, check whether both devices can access the same Microsoft account and Realm, whether the destination supports the required Bedrock version and whether you have room for the downloaded copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A quick compatibility decision

  1. If both devices run Bedrock and can access one Microsoft account and Realm, use the upload/download procedure below.
  2. If the source is an older Nintendo Switch Edition save, convert it with Sync Old Worlds first.
  3. If the source is Java Edition, stop and use Java-compatible local-file or Realm instructions instead; the Bedrock menus will not make it a console world.
  4. If you do not have Realm access, Windows may still use documented local import and export features for a Bedrock file, but that does not supply a general Xbox, PlayStation or Switch transfer route.

Step-by-step: upload a world to Realms

Perform these steps on the device where the world currently exists. The menu wording can vary slightly by platform or update, but the sequence is the same.

  1. Open Minecraft and select Play.
  2. Open Realms, choose the Realm you will use, and open Realms Hub.
  3. Select the world slot you want to use. Check the slot name carefully if the Realm has more than one world.
  4. Choose Edit World.
  5. For an empty slot, select Upload World. If a world already occupies the slot, select Replace World instead.
  6. Choose the local world from the device and confirm the upload.
  7. Wait for Minecraft to report that the operation has completed before closing the game, disconnecting from the internet or putting the console to sleep.
  8. Return to the Realm list and verify that the expected world name or slot is shown before moving to the destination device.

Upload World versus Replace World

Upload World puts a local world into an empty Realm slot. Replace World removes the world currently in the selected active slot before putting the chosen world there. Replacement is therefore a destructive change to that slot, not merely an additional upload.

Before choosing Replace World, download the current Realm world or preserve it with another supported backup. If several worlds are in the Realm, read the slot and world names twice; uploading to the wrong slot can make the desired world appear missing even though it is still in another slot.

Preparing a large or important world

There is no official transfer-speed benchmark to rely on. Upload time depends on the world and connection, so allow extra time for a world with a long history of play. Avoid starting immediately before a trip or a scheduled play session. Keep the console powered and connected, and wait for the completion message rather than assuming the menu closing means the upload succeeded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step: download the world on the other device

Switch to the destination Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Windows PC or other supported Bedrock device.

  1. Sign in with the Microsoft account that has access to the Realm.
  2. Open Minecraft and select Play > Realms.
  3. Choose the Realm and the slot containing the uploaded world.
  4. Select Edit World, then choose Download World.
  5. Wait for the download to finish and return to the main worlds screen.
  6. Open the Worlds tab. Minecraft creates a local copy named World name – Copy.
  7. Rename the copy if you want a different local name, then play it as a normal world.

The download is a copy on the destination device; it does not automatically erase the source device’s local save. Keep the source until you have opened the downloaded copy and confirmed that the terrain, player inventory, builds and other important content are present.

Verify the copy before treating the transfer as complete

  • Open the copied world once from the Worlds tab instead of relying only on its name.
  • Check a familiar base, map area or landmark to confirm that the terrain and structures are correct.
  • Check the player inventory, armor, experience and other progress that matters to your playthrough.
  • Confirm that the world settings and any expected behavior are present.
  • Only after these checks should you consider removing an old local copy or changing the Realm slot again.

Common transfer combinations

Source Destination What to verify
Xbox One or Xbox Series Windows 10/11 PC Both copies use Bedrock Edition and the PC account can access the Realm.
Nintendo Switch Xbox, PlayStation or Windows PC Convert an older Switch Edition save first if it is not already a Bedrock world.
PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 Nintendo Switch Sign in on Switch with the Microsoft account that can access the Realm and use the current Bedrock version.
Windows 10/11 Bedrock Xbox, PlayStation or Switch Upload the Bedrock local world to a Realm; a Java world cannot follow this route.
Xbox or PlayStation Another console of the same family Do not rely on the console’s ordinary cloud save alone for a cross-platform move; use the shared Bedrock Realm workflow.
Mobile Bedrock Console or Windows Bedrock Use the same Realm-access account and confirm the mobile world is Bedrock before uploading.

The hardware brands do not determine the transfer method. Edition, Realm access and version compatibility do. A world can move between very different hardware platforms when all three conditions are satisfied.

Moving an older Nintendo Switch Edition world

A save from the discontinued Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition is not immediately the same thing as a current Bedrock world. Convert it on the Switch before uploading it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Launch the current Bedrock version of Minecraft on the Switch.
  2. Open the Worlds list.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and select Sync Old Worlds.
  4. Choose the discovered legacy world and let Minecraft convert it.
  5. Confirm that the converted save appears with your regular Bedrock worlds.
  6. Open the converted world locally and inspect a familiar area.
  7. Use the Realms upload procedure, then download it on the destination device.

Keep the original legacy save until you have checked the converted world. Conversion is a format change, so retaining the source provides a fallback if the result needs inspection. If the old save is not listed under Sync Old Worlds, only saves discovered by that menu can be converted through this documented route; do not assume that renaming files will make it appear.

Backups and recovery

Backups are especially important before using Replace World. Minecraft’s backup guidance distinguishes among automatic console cloud saves, manual Windows world backups and Realm backups. Use the backup type that matches where the world was stored, and keep more than one recoverable copy when the world represents a long playthrough.

Before replacing a Realm slot

  1. Open the Realm that currently contains the world.
  2. Download the current world to a device, or create another available backup using the platform’s supported backup option.
  3. Verify that the backup can be found and opens before selecting Replace World.
  4. Record which slot and world name you preserved if the Realm contains multiple worlds.
  5. Only then upload the new world into the slot.

If the downloaded world is damaged or incomplete

  • Do not delete the source local world or the previous Realm copy.
  • Check whether an earlier Realm or platform backup is available and restore that version.
  • Update both devices and retry the download if the first attempt stopped or produced an error.
  • Confirm that you selected the intended Realm slot; multiple slots can make it easy to download the wrong world.
  • Check available destination storage and let the operation finish without switching apps or suspending the console.

If no build backup exists, recreating a world from its seed can reproduce the map layout, but it does not restore player progress, inventories, structures or other changes made after world creation. A seed is therefore a map-generation fallback, not a world backup.

Using a Windows local copy

Windows Bedrock users can keep a local copy after downloading a Realm world. Minecraft’s official transfer guidance links Windows users to Bedrock world export and import instructions, while its backup guidance covers restoring manual Windows world backups.

This is useful when you want an offline archive or need to preserve a known-good version before changing the Realm. Give the archive a clear name and date so you can distinguish it from the automatically named “World name – Copy.” The local export is still a Bedrock world; it does not turn a Bedrock save into a Java save.

A Windows local file can be imported through Minecraft’s documented Bedrock process, but local import does not bypass the edition requirement. A Java world remains a Java world, and a console’s internal save is not automatically exposed as a Windows file.

Can you transfer a world without Realms?

Minecraft’s documented cross-device route for Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC is Realms. The official guidance does not provide a supported direct USB or external-drive procedure for copying a world among those consoles and Windows.

Third-party file extraction, console-storage workarounds and unofficial conversion utilities may depend on a particular operating-system or game version and can fail after updates. They can also put the only copy of a world at risk. For a supported transfer, use the Realm upload and download workflow. Windows users who already have a Bedrock file can use Minecraft’s documented local import and export process, but that does not create a general console USB method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Realms requires an active trial or paid subscription, but the transfer itself does not require a special physical cable or accessory. No external drive is needed for the supported workflow. Keep the subscription active long enough to upload, access and download the world, and preserve a local copy afterward if you want an offline backup.

Java Edition: why the console workflow does not apply

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are separate editions with different world formats and transfer procedures. A Java world should be handled with Java’s own local-file or Realm instructions. It will not appear as a directly uploadable Bedrock console world merely because both versions are called Minecraft.

Before troubleshooting an apparently missing world, check the edition on the device where it was created. If it is Java, look for the Java world folder and Java-compatible transfer options rather than the Bedrock Play > Realms menus described above. If the destination is an Xbox, PlayStation or Switch, the Bedrock workflow cannot be used to make a Java save playable there.

Troubleshooting checklist

The Realm or world is missing

  • Confirm that you are signed in with the Microsoft account that owns or has access to the Realm.
  • Check that you opened Play > Realms, not only the local Worlds tab.
  • Verify that the upload finished on the source device and that you selected the correct slot.
  • Check whether the world is listed under another Realm slot or under the local Worlds tab with a different name.

Upload World is unavailable

  • Make sure the Realm slot is empty if you expect to use Upload World.
  • If a world is already in that slot, use Replace World only after preserving a backup.
  • Confirm that the local save is Bedrock Edition.
  • Recheck that the Realms trial or paid subscription is active.

The destination cannot download the world

  • Update Minecraft on both devices.
  • Check the destination’s internet connection and available storage.
  • Sign out and back in with the account that has Realm access, then reopen the Realm.
  • Allow the download to complete before switching apps or putting a console to sleep.
  • Try the download again only after checking that the source Realm slot still contains the intended world.

The Switch world does not appear after conversion

Use Sync Old Worlds at the bottom of the Bedrock Worlds list. Only discovered legacy Switch Edition saves can be converted through that menu. Once converted, look for the save among the normal Bedrock worlds before attempting the upload. Keep the legacy save until the converted copy has been opened and checked.

The destination shows the wrong copy

Look for the exact “World name – Copy” entry and compare it with the Realm slot you uploaded. If you have downloaded the same world more than once, rename each verified copy with a date or device name. This avoids accidentally playing an older local copy and assuming the transfer lost recent progress.

What happens to the original world?

Uploading does not remove the local source world. Downloading creates a separate destination copy with “- Copy” appended to its name. The operation that can remove existing Realm content is Replace World, which clears the selected active slot before installing the chosen world. Treat the source local save and any downloaded backup as your recovery points until the transfer has been verified.

Practical transfer checklist

  1. Identify whether the source is Bedrock or Java.
  2. Update Minecraft on both source and destination devices.
  3. Activate or confirm the Realms trial or paid subscription.
  4. Sign in with the Microsoft account that can access the chosen Realm.
  5. Convert an older Switch Edition save with Sync Old Worlds.
  6. Back up the current Realm slot before using Replace World.
  7. Upload from Play > Realms > Realms Hub > Edit World.
  8. On the destination, use Play > Realms > Edit World > Download World.
  9. Open the “World name – Copy” entry from the Worlds tab.
  10. Inspect the world, then preserve a Windows or platform backup if you need an offline archive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I transfer a Minecraft world from Xbox to PC?

Use the Bedrock version on both devices: upload the Xbox world to a Realm, sign in to the same Microsoft account on the Windows PC, then choose Play > Realms > Edit World > Download World. Open the resulting “World name – Copy” on the PC’s Worlds tab.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I move a Minecraft world from Switch to Xbox?

Yes, if the Switch save is a current Bedrock world. Upload it to a Realm on Switch and download it from the Realm on Xbox. Convert an older Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition save with Sync Old Worlds first.

How do I transfer a PS5 Bedrock world to Switch?

Update both devices, upload the PS5 Bedrock world to a Realm, then sign in on Switch with the Microsoft account that has Realm access. Use Play > Realms > Edit World > Download World, and open the copied world from the Switch Worlds tab.

Can I transfer a world from PlayStation 4 to Windows PC?

Yes, when both games are Bedrock Edition. Upload the PlayStation world to a Realm, sign in to Bedrock on Windows with the account that can access that Realm, and download the world into the PC Worlds list.

Will my Java world work on a console?

Not through the Bedrock Realm workflow. Java and Bedrock are separate editions, so use Java-compatible local-file or Realm procedures instead. A Java save will not become a console Bedrock world through the Play > Realms menus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I transfer Minecraft worlds without Realms?

Minecraft does not document a supported direct USB or external-drive method for moving worlds among Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and Windows. Windows Bedrock users can use documented local import and export features for Bedrock files, but a general console transfer still uses Realms.

Does downloading a Realm world delete the original?

No. The destination receives a separate local copy, while the source local world remains. Replacing an existing Realm slot is the operation that removes that slot’s current world.

What is the difference between Upload World and Replace World?

Upload World places a local world into an empty Realm slot. Replace World removes the world currently in the selected slot before installing the chosen world, so preserve a backup first.

Where is the transferred world after downloading?

Return to the destination device’s Worlds tab. Minecraft normally names the local copy “World name – Copy.” You can rename it after confirming that it opens correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my old Switch save is not visible?

Open the current Bedrock version, go to the bottom of the Worlds list and select Sync Old Worlds. Only legacy saves discovered there can be converted through that menu. Check the normal Bedrock list after conversion.

Will a world seed restore my progress?

No. A seed can reproduce the map layout, but it does not restore player inventories, structures, achievements or other progress made after the world was created.

The Bottom Line

For Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and Windows, use the supported Bedrock Realms route: update both devices, upload the source world, download it with the same Microsoft account, and verify the resulting “World name – Copy.” Back up any existing Realm slot before choosing Replace World, and convert legacy Switch Edition saves with Sync Old Worlds first.
