Whether you can move Microsoft Office depends on the license you own. Microsoft 365 is reinstalled by signing in to the account that holds the subscription, while Office 2024 and Office 2021 one-time purchases can generally move to another computer you own no more than once every 90 days, except after hardware failure. Older purchases and work or school licenses follow different terms.
Identify the license before moving Office
Do not begin by searching for the product key. First determine which entitlement is installed on the old computer and which account controls it. The same Office application can be installed under several licensing models, and the transfer procedure is not interchangeable.

Microsoft 365 subscription
A Microsoft 365 subscription belongs to the Microsoft account that pays for or receives the subscription. A work or school Microsoft 365 subscription instead belongs to the organization account assigned by an administrator. You reinstall the desktop apps by signing in with that account; the one-time-purchase 90-day transfer rule does not apply.

Microsoft says subscription users can install Microsoft 365 on all their devices and remain signed in on up to five devices at once. A Family subscription has separate sharing provisions, so the person who shared the subscription may need to manage your access rather than transferring a product key.

Office 2024 or Office 2021 one-time purchase
These editions are bought once rather than renewed as a subscription. Microsoft permits transfer to another computer that belongs to the license holder, generally no more than once every 90 days. The stated exception is when the original computer has suffered a hardware failure. You must remove Office from the old computer and retain no copy there.
The 90-day condition is a licensing rule, not a claim about how long an installation normally lasts. It applies to the relevant Office 2024 or Office 2021 one-time-purchase terms; verify the exact edition shown in your Microsoft account before treating it as universal.
Older one-time-purchase Office
Do not apply the Office 2024 or Office 2021 wording automatically to an older edition. Microsoft directs users to the license terms for the specific product. A transfer allowed under older terms may require uninstalling Office from the first computer and completing phone activation.

An organization-managed installation is controlled by the organization rather than by a personal retail product key. Sign in with the work or school identity and check that an administrator assigned a license that includes the desktop apps. Volume-license installations, blocked sign-ins, and centrally managed deployments may require the organization’s IT staff.
A product key that has never been redeemed
If you have a new, unused key, follow Microsoft’s setup flow and associate it with the Microsoft account you intend to use. After redemption, the key is normally no longer needed for installation. Reinstall from that account instead of trying to redeem the same key again.

Step-by-step: move an eligible Office license
1. Record the edition and ownership on the old computer
Open an Office application such as Word or Excel and look at the account or product information screen. Record whether it says Microsoft 365, Office 2024, Office 2021, an older Office version, or an organization-managed product. Also note the signed-in email address. The address shown inside Office may differ from the address you remember using to buy the product.
If the computer cannot start, use purchase records or the accounts you normally use with Microsoft services. A key that was already redeemed will not usually provide a second installation path by itself; the associated account is the important recovery point.

- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
2. Confirm which account owns or receives the license
On the new computer, use the Microsoft account associated with the purchase or redemption. If the product does not appear in that account’s list of available products, sign out and check other Microsoft accounts that may have been used at checkout or during the original setup.
For a work or school license, use the organization’s identity, not a personal account. If the account has no install option, ask the administrator to verify that a license including desktop applications was assigned to you.
3. Prepare the new computer
- Use an account with permission to install desktop software.
- Connect the computer to the internet so setup and activation can contact Microsoft’s licensing service.
- Remove an unneeded trial or conflicting Office installation if setup reports that another edition is already installed.
- Have the correct Microsoft or organization account password and any required sign-in verification available.
Do not enter a redeemed key repeatedly as a substitute for identifying the account. Repeated redemption attempts do not transfer ownership and can make it harder to tell whether the problem is the account, the edition, or activation.
4. Install from the account that lists the product
Sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the home purchase and choose the Office product listed for installation. For Microsoft 365, choose the desktop-app installation offered by the subscription. For an assigned business or school license, sign in to the organization’s Microsoft 365 portal or installation flow.
If no product is listed, stop before buying another license. First verify the email address used for redemption or purchase. A missing product usually means the wrong account, an account whose subscription ended, or an organization license that has not been assigned—not that the old product key must be entered again.
5. Open an Office app and activate it
After setup finishes, open Word, Excel, or another installed Office app. Sign in when prompted, or follow the activation wizard for that edition. The app should display the account or product state that corresponds to your license.
For older one-time purchases, the activation wizard may offer phone activation. Use that route when the edition’s license terms allow the transfer and online activation does not complete. Do not assume that a successful installation means the license has been transferred; the app must show an activated state.

6. Remove the old installation when the license requires a transfer
For an eligible Office 2024 or Office 2021 one-time purchase, uninstall Office from the old computer and do not keep a usable copy there. This is part of the transfer condition, not an optional cleanup step. Apply the same removal requirement when the older edition’s license terms require it.

Microsoft 365 subscriptions are different: you manage sign-ins and devices through the subscription rather than applying the one-time-purchase transfer rule. If the old computer is being sold or given away, sign out of Office and remove your personal account from that device.
7. Test the apps and files
Create or open a document in each Office app you need. Confirm that saving, printing, add-ins, and access to cloud files work under the new account. Activation is complete only when the apps operate without an unlicensed-product warning.
How the 90-day rule works for Office 2024 and Office 2021
Microsoft’s stated condition for these one-time purchases is transfer to another computer owned by the license holder no more than once every 90 days, except when hardware failure allows an earlier move. The rule concerns moving the license, not installing the same product on several computers at the same time.
- The destination computer must belong to you.
- Remove Office from the previous computer.
- Keep no retained copy on the previous computer.
- If the old computer failed, document that hardware failure and follow the activation flow for the edition.
- Check the exact product terms if your account lists a different edition or bundle.
Microsoft describes a one-time purchase such as Office Home & Business, Office Home & Student, or Office Home as installable on only one PC or Mac at a time. That statement explains why removing the old copy matters even when the replacement computer is yours.
Microsoft 365: reinstall rather than transfer a perpetual license
For Microsoft 365, the practical operation is account-based reinstallation. Sign in on the new computer with the account holding the subscription, install the desktop apps, and complete activation inside an Office app. There is no product-key handoff comparable to a retail one-time purchase.
Subscription users can install on all their devices but can be signed in on up to five at once. If you reach the sign-in limit, sign out of an old device or manage the account’s listed installations before activating the new computer. Family sharing is controlled by the subscription owner, so a new computer may require the owner to share the subscription with the account you use.

Older Office editions need their own license check
Older Office purchases can have transfer language that differs from the current Office 2024 and Office 2021 rule. Before uninstalling or attempting activation, identify the edition and read the license terms associated with it. Microsoft’s activation guidance indicates that a permitted transfer can require both uninstalling Office from the first computer and completing phone activation.
If online activation rejects a valid older purchase, use the activation wizard’s instructions for that version. Entering the same redeemed key repeatedly will not replace the required account or phone-activation process.
Work, school, and volume-license transfers
Organization-managed Office is not transferred like a personal retail purchase. The administrator controls assignment, installation rights, device limits, and sometimes the deployment package itself.
- Sign in to the new computer with the work or school account provided by the organization.
- Check whether the account has a license that includes the desktop Office apps, rather than web-only services.
- Use the organization’s documented installation portal or software deployment tool.
- Open an Office app and complete the organization sign-in or activation prompt.
- If the product is unavailable, contact IT and ask them to verify the assignment and any device policy.
Volume-license installations may not expose a personal product page or retail key. Do not purchase a replacement personal license to solve an organization deployment problem unless the organization has confirmed that the personal purchase is appropriate.

The product is missing from the account
Sign out and test the Microsoft accounts used at purchase, redemption, or the first installation. For an organization license, ask the administrator to confirm assignment. A redeemed home product normally appears under the account that received it; the key itself generally is not needed for reinstalling.
The activation screen says the product is already in use
For Office 2024 or Office 2021, confirm that the old computer’s copy has been removed and that the move is allowed under the 90-day condition. For Microsoft 365, review the signed-in-device limit and sign out of an old device if necessary.

Online activation does not complete
Follow the activation wizard for the exact Office version. Older transfers may require phone activation. For a managed work or school installation, contact IT rather than changing deployment settings yourself.
The old computer failed
Office 2024 and Office 2021 terms provide an exception to the usual 90-day interval when hardware failure prevents normal removal. Install on the replacement computer through the associated account, explain the hardware failure if the activation flow asks, and follow any additional verification steps. If the edition is older, use its own license terms and activation guidance.
Product-key questions answered
Do I need the key to reinstall Office?
Usually not when a home Office key has already been redeemed. Microsoft associates the product with the account used during redemption, and that account supplies the installation. The key remains important only when it has never been redeemed or when Microsoft’s support process specifically asks for purchase evidence.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I redeem the same key on the new computer?
Do not try to redeem a key that was already used. Follow the account-based installation flow instead. If the key has never been redeemed, redeem it while signed in to the account you want to keep using, then install from that account.
Can I leave Office installed on both computers?
Not for a transferred one-time purchase. Office 2024 and Office 2021 require removing the old copy and retaining no copy there. Microsoft 365 permits installation on all your devices, subject to the subscription’s simultaneous sign-in limit and any Family-sharing rules.
Before-you-finish checklist
- You identified the edition and whether it is a subscription, one-time purchase, or organization license.
- You used the account that owns the purchase or receives the organization’s assignment.
- The product appears in that account’s installation options.
- An Office app opens without an unlicensed-product warning.
- For Office 2024 or Office 2021, you respected the 90-day transfer condition unless hardware failure applies.
- You removed the old one-time-purchase installation and retained no copy.
- For a work or school license, IT confirmed assignment if installation or activation was blocked.
- For an older edition, you followed its own terms and used phone activation if the wizard required it.
When a new license is actually necessary
Buying a new Office license is a fallback, not the normal way to move an eligible existing entitlement. Consider a new purchase only after confirming that the old product cannot be recovered through its associated account, that the edition’s terms do not permit the requested transfer, or that an organization has not assigned a license. Microsoft documents purchasing and redeeming a new Office Home product when no transferable entitlement is available.
