You can move a domain between registrars without taking a website or email service offline. Keep the current nameservers, DNS hosting, and web hosting active; transfer only the registrar sponsorship. Back up the DNS zone, confirm that the domain is eligible, unlock it, obtain its Auth-Code, start the request at the gaining registrar, approve the authorization messages, and verify DNS and services after completion. A registrar transfer and a DNS or hosting migration are separate operations, so do not change nameservers as part of this move unless you have planned a separate DNS migration.
What changes during a registrar transfer—and what does not
A registrar is the company that sponsors your domain registration, manages renewal and contact records, and submits registry commands. DNS hosting is the service that publishes the domain’s nameservers and records. Web hosting stores your site, while mail providers handle email delivery. Moving the registrar changes who administers the registration; it does not inherently move DNS records, website files, databases, mailboxes, or certificates.

| Operation | What it changes | Downtime risk when kept separate |
|---|---|---|
| Registrar transfer | The sponsoring registrar and its management account | Normally low, provided nameservers and DNS remain unchanged |
| Nameserver change | The authoritative DNS service for the domain | Can interrupt websites, APIs, verification records, and email if records are missing or propagation is mishandled |
| Hosting migration | Where website or application files run | Requires its own cutover plan, testing, and DNS change |
| Email migration | Mailboxes, routing, and filtering | Requires MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC planning; unrelated to registrar sponsorship |
The continuity rule is simple: leave the authoritative nameservers exactly as they are until the registrar move has completed and been checked. Keep the DNS provider’s account paid and active. If the gaining registrar asks whether to import or replace DNS, preserve the existing delegation and records rather than starting a new zone from an empty template.
Prepare an inventory and DNS backup
Before unlocking anything, create a record of the current state. This gives you a recovery reference if a control panel displays incomplete information or a transfer accidentally changes delegation.

- Write down the domain name, current registrar, expiration date, and the account used to manage it.
- Record every authoritative nameserver, including the exact spelling and order shown by the current registrar or DNS host.
- Export the DNS zone if your provider supports an export. Otherwise, copy each record into a dated document.
- Include A and AAAA records for websites and servers; CNAME records for aliases; MX records for mail; and TXT records used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC, ownership verification, and application integrations.
- Note any CAA, SRV, NS, or other special records used by your services, even if they are not part of your everyday edits.
- Confirm which service is authoritative for DNS and keep that service active throughout the transfer.
- Save evidence of the current DNSSEC state, including whether it is enabled and whether the registrar displays delegation-signing information.
This inventory is not a request to recreate the zone at the new registrar. It is a safeguard. A registrar transfer can leave a third-party DNS service untouched, but your notes let you detect and repair an unexpected nameserver or DNSSEC change quickly.
Check whether the domain is eligible
Transfer rules depend on the top-level domain (TLD), registry, and registrar. Check the current registrar’s transfer-status page and the relevant registry rules before paying for a transfer.
| Check | Why it can block the move | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Change of Registrant lock | A change to the registered name holder or certain contact details can trigger a 60-day lock. | Find out when the lock ends. If the registrar offers an allowed opt-out before the change, use it only when you understand the consequences; otherwise wait. |
| Recent transfer restriction | A domain that was transferred recently may be in a restricted period. | Confirm the last transfer date and the waiting rule for the specific TLD. |
| Registrar lock | The registry may show a status such as clientTransferProhibited. |
Disable the transfer lock in the current registrar’s panel before submitting the request. |
| Registry lock or dispute hold | Registry-level security controls, court orders, or dispute processes can prevent transfers. | Ask the current registrar or registry what authorization is required; do not repeatedly submit failed requests. |
| Expiration, redemption, or pending deletion | Expired domains may be in a renewal, redemption, or deletion phase where ordinary transfers are unavailable or risky. | Resolve renewal or recovery first and verify the exact status with the registrar. |
| TLD-specific policy | Country-code and specialized TLDs can use different codes, forms, or eligibility rules. | Follow the registry and gaining-registrar instructions for that TLD rather than assuming gTLD rules apply. |
ICANN’s Transfer Policy page identifies an update dated 21 February 2024, with implementation required no later than 21 August 2025. The practical effect can still depend on how an individual registrar and registry implement the policy. Treat the status displayed for your domain and TLD as authoritative for the transaction.

Transfer authorization messages must reach a person who can act for the registered name holder. ICANN states that only the holder, the administrative contact, or an explicitly authorized person may initiate a transfer. Check that the account email and the registrant or administrative contact address are current and accessible.
- Sign in to the current registrar and inspect the registrant and administrative contact fields.
- Make sure the mailbox is functioning and not filtering registrar messages into spam or quarantine.
- If the domain belongs to a company, document who is authorized to approve the move and retain that person’s access until completion.
- Do not change contact ownership details immediately before a transfer unless necessary; such a change can invoke a 60-day Change of Registrant lock.
Keep access to both registrar accounts during the whole process. The gaining registrar may send a confirmation request, while the losing registrar or registry may send a separate notice or cancellation option.
Unlock the domain and obtain the Auth-Code
An Auth-Code—also called an Authorization Code, Auth-Info Code, or transfer code—is created by a registrar to help identify the domain name holder. It is required for transfers of gTLD registrations. The code is normally displayed in the current registrar’s control panel or delivered through its approved support process.

- Open the current registrar’s domain-management page.
- Locate the transfer-lock control and disable it. The status should no longer indicate
clientTransferProhibitedafter the change has taken effect. - Choose the option labelled Auth-Code, EPP code, transfer code, or a similar term.
- Copy the code exactly, preserving capitalization, punctuation, and any leading or trailing characters. Treat it as a credential and do not publish it.
- If the interface does not show a code, submit a request through the registrar’s documented channel and keep the request number.
ICANN says the current registrar must provide the Auth-Code through its panel or within five calendar days after a request. That is a delivery requirement, not a promise that the entire transfer will finish in five days. If the deadline passes, follow the registrar’s escalation process and retain evidence of the request.
Start the transfer at the gaining registrar
The gaining registrar is the normal starting point. Its transfer page will ask for the domain name and Auth-Code, display the price, and collect payment or other confirmation required for the TLD.
- Open the gaining registrar’s transfer workflow and enter the exact domain name.
- Enter the Auth-Code supplied by the current registrar. If the code is rejected, stop and compare every character rather than guessing.
- Review the displayed transfer price, renewal terms, supported TLD, and any contact-data or privacy settings before checkout.
- Submit the request and save the order number or confirmation screen.
- Complete every approval step requested by the gaining registrar, including confirmation links or account verification.
A transfer fee may be shown at checkout, and renewal pricing is separate from the one-time transfer charge. Prices, support coverage, and included services vary by registrar and TLD, so record the terms you accepted rather than relying on a promotional headline.
Keep nameservers and DNSSEC unchanged while the request runs
Do not edit nameservers during the transfer. The authoritative DNS service should continue answering from the same provider, so visitors and mail systems keep using the same records. Avoid combining a registrar move with a website migration, email migration, or DNS-provider change.
In the gaining registrar’s interface, look for the domain’s nameserver and DNSSEC settings. Some systems display the existing delegation automatically; others require you to re-enter it. Preserve the exact nameserver values and the current DNSSEC state. If the gaining registrar shows a warning that DNSSEC data will be removed or replaced, pause the transfer and obtain a documented procedure from both providers before accepting that change.

Monitor authorization and transfer status
Transfer completion has no universal duration published for every registrar and TLD. Monitor the process rather than promising a particular number of hours or days.
- Check the gaining registrar’s transfer-status page for pending authorization, processing, or completed states.
- Watch the registered contact mailbox, administrative mailbox, and both registrar accounts for approval or cancellation notices.
- Respond promptly to legitimate authorization requests, but verify the sender and domain before clicking links.
- Do not cancel the old registrar account, DNS service, or hosting subscription while the transfer is pending.
- If the current registrar offers a confirmation to approve or release the transfer, review the domain and destination before accepting.
ICANN’s policy says registered name holders must be able to transfer registrations between registrars when the gaining registrar meets the policy’s minimum standards and no ICANN or registry rule prohibits the move. A refusal should therefore be tied to a specific lock, policy condition, or verification failure—not an unexplained preference to retain the domain.
Verify the domain after completion
When both accounts show that the transfer has completed, verify operation from outside the registrar dashboards. A successful sponsorship change is not the same thing as a tested website and mail path.
- Confirm the new registrar is listed as the sponsoring registrar in its account and in the domain’s registration record.
- Compare the authoritative nameservers with the pre-transfer inventory. They should match unless you deliberately planned a DNS migration.
- Check that the DNSSEC state is still correct and that no signing or delegation warning is present.
- Load the website over HTTPS and test important paths such as login, forms, checkout, APIs, and static assets.
- Send a test message into the domain and out from it. Verify that inbound and outbound mail work and that authentication records remain available.
- Check DNS answers from more than one network or resolver so that a local cache does not hide a problem.
- Review renewal date, auto-renewal setting, billing contact, recovery email, and account security at the new registrar.
- Re-enable the transfer lock if you want the domain protected from another move, and save the completion notice with your DNS inventory.
Only after these checks should you plan a separate nameserver or hosting change. That later project needs its own zone export, low-risk cutover plan, and rollback path.
Troubleshoot common transfer failures
The Auth-Code is rejected
Copy the code again directly from the current registrar. Codes can be case-sensitive and may expire or be regenerated. Confirm that the domain name has no hidden whitespace and that you are using the code for the correct TLD. If a newly generated code fails, ask the current registrar to invalidate the old code and issue a fresh one, then retry at the gaining registrar.
The domain is still locked
Look for both a registrar-panel lock and a registry status. Disabling a button in the panel may take time to appear in the registry. A 60-day Change of Registrant lock, recent-transfer restriction, registry lock, or dispute hold cannot be solved by repeatedly toggling the ordinary transfer lock. Obtain the reason and end date in writing and address that condition first.

No approval email arrives
Check the registered and administrative contact addresses, spam and quarantine folders, mailbox capacity, and forwarding rules. Ask the gaining registrar to resend the message if available. Do not change the registrant details merely to reach a different mailbox unless you have confirmed that doing so will not trigger a new 60-day lock.
The transfer is pending longer than expected
There is no single completion time that applies to every registrar and TLD. Confirm that all approvals are complete, the Auth-Code is valid, and no lock or expiration condition appeared after submission. Escalate with both registrars using the order number and the date of each authorization. Keep DNS and hosting active while the case is investigated.
The website or email stops working
Compare the current authoritative nameservers with your inventory first. If they changed, restore the previous delegation at the registrar that controls it, provided that provider and zone are still active. Then check A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records for accidental deletion. If nameservers match, inspect the hosting or mail provider separately; a registrar transfer alone does not move those services.
The domain is near expiration or in redemption
Do not assume a pending transfer protects an expiring domain. Contact the current registrar immediately, confirm whether renewal is possible, and determine whether the domain is in an ordinary expiration period, redemption, or pending deletion. The safest action depends on the TLD’s rules and the registrar’s status; resolve the registration state before attempting another transfer.

Special cases that need extra care
Domains using third-party DNS
Many domains use a DNS provider different from the registrar. That arrangement is compatible with a registrar transfer. Keep the third-party DNS account active, preserve its nameservers, and do not create a second zone at the gaining registrar unless you are intentionally moving DNS.
DNSSEC-enabled domains
DNSSEC depends on matching signing data in the DNS service and delegation data at the registrar or registry. Record the current state before transfer and verify it afterward. If the new registrar cannot represent the existing DNSSEC configuration safely, obtain instructions before proceeding; an incorrect delegation can make the domain fail to resolve even when ordinary DNS records are intact.
Privacy or changed contact data
Privacy displays and contact-verification rules differ by TLD. A transfer is not the right time to experiment with a new registrant name, organization, or email address. Make only necessary corrections, and check whether the change will create a 60-day lock.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Several domains in one account
Transfer one low-risk domain first if your portfolio is large or your DNS architecture is complex. Use the first transfer to confirm how the gaining registrar handles nameservers, DNSSEC, contact verification, billing, and lock controls before moving the rest. Keep a separate inventory and completion record for each domain.
What to retain for future recovery
- The DNS export or handwritten record, with its creation date.
- The old and new registrar account identifiers and recovery contacts.
- The Auth-Code request date and any support case number. Do not retain the code in an exposed public document after use.
- Transfer order, approval, completion, and cancellation messages.
- Expiration and renewal dates, auto-renewal choice, and payment owner.
- The nameserver and DNSSEC state verified after completion.
These records let an authorized administrator recover access, prove what changed, and repeat the process without guessing when the next registrar move is required.
