To make a video match OBS, first check Settings > Video in OBS and use Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Value as your targets. Then transcode the source in HandBrake with the intended dimensions and frame-rate mode. Use Constant Frame Rate (CFR) when the destination requires constant timing; use Same as Source with Variable Frame Rate (VFR) when preserving the source’s changing timing matters. Test a short sample before encoding the whole file.
Choose the OBS settings that the video should match
Open OBS Studio > Settings > Video. Record the three values shown there:
- Base (Canvas) Resolution: the dimensions of the scene composition.
- Output (Scaled) Resolution: the dimensions OBS sends to the output. Use this as the resolution target when you want the file to match the stream or recording output.
- Common FPS Value: the OBS output frame-rate setting to match if the destination needs the same rate.
The canvas and output resolutions can differ. For example, OBS can compose a scene at one size and scale it to another for output, so do not assume the canvas size is the encoded size. The OBS Studio Overview Guide explains these controls.
Check the source before choosing a frame-rate mode
Inspect the video’s actual dimensions and timing before encoding. A file labeled with a nominal rate may still vary its frame timing: modern recordings can switch rates over time. HandBrake distinguishes that variable timing from a constant frame rate, and its frame-rate guidance page is marked as a draft. See HandBrake’s frame-rate documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Decide what “match” means for this workflow. If OBS or another destination requires one steady frame rate, choose CFR at the intended target rate. If maintaining the source’s variable timing is more important, choose Same as Source with VFR; that preserves variable timing rather than making every frame interval constant.
Transcode in HandBrake
- Open the source: launch HandBrake and open the video you inspected.
- Choose dimensions deliberately: set the output dimensions to the OBS Output (Scaled) Resolution when matching output size. Check the selected preset’s dimensions before encoding; presets may resize the image.
- Set the frame-rate behavior: open the video settings and select the intended frame-rate mode. For source timing preservation, choose Same as Source and Variable Frame Rate. For constant timing, choose Constant Frame Rate and select the desired rate—usually the OBS Common FPS Value if the file must match OBS.
- Review quality and output size: select quality settings appropriate to your use and storage limits. Re-encoding can affect image quality and file size; a larger frame size or higher frame rate can require more data.
- Encode a short sample: process a representative section, then play it back or import it into the intended OBS scene or workflow. Check dimensions, motion, duration, and audio/video synchronization before encoding the full file.
- Encode the complete file: after the sample behaves as needed, run the full encode with the same settings.
HandBrake presets are not merely labels: they can scale dimensions and limit frame rate. For example, HandBrake documents that a 720p30 preset can turn a 1080p60 source into 720p with a 30-fps peak. Verify preset effects in HandBrake’s official presets documentation.

VFR, CFR, and frame-rate conversion
| Choice | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Same as Source + VFR | Preserves variable frame timing from the source. | Source timing matters and the destination handles variable frame rate. |
| Same as Source + CFR | Uses a constant output rate based on the detected source rate. | You need constant timing while keeping the source’s detected rate. |
| Specified rate + CFR | Conforms the output to the selected constant rate. When rates differ, frames may be duplicated or omitted. | The destination requires a particular constant rate, such as the OBS target. |
Choosing CFR does not guarantee that every source frame maps one-for-one to the output. Converting between rates can duplicate or omit temporal samples, which may change how motion looks. Check both motion and the resulting duration in the test sample. HandBrake describes CFR as a special-case choice, including for non-linear editing imports or older devices; the best setting depends on the source and destination.
Keep recording, remuxing, and transcoding distinct
If you are making a new recording in OBS rather than converting an existing video, OBS recommends recording to MKV because it is more resilient to an ungraceful stop. If your workflow needs MP4, OBS has a built-in remux function. Remuxing changes the container; it is not the same as transcoding the video stream. See the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide.

OBS’s Lossless recording preset is described in its Recording Encoder Presets Guide as producing files around 7 GB per minute. That is an approximate example from the OBS Project guide dated September 14, 2023, not a guaranteed file size; content and configuration affect the result. OBS also notes that encoder and recording choices can add resource demands.
If OBS will play the file rather than encode it
Transcoding is not automatically necessary just to add a video to an OBS scene. OBS troubleshooting guidance points to Media Source or VLC Source for media playback. If playback is smooth and compatible in your scene, you can use the file directly. If it fails or the workflow requires fixed dimensions or timing, transcode and test it. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

When to use FFmpeg instead
FFmpeg is a command-line alternative for converting files, applying filters, and controlling frame rate. Use it if you need repeatable scripted processing or a filter-based workflow; for a graphical workflow, HandBrake exposes the source-match and VFR/CFR choices directly. FFmpeg’s options depend on the source, chosen codecs, and desired output, so consult the FFmpeg documentation for the exact conversion and frame-rate controls rather than copying a command that may not fit your file.
Common problems and fixes
- The output has the wrong resolution: check HandBrake’s dimensions and preset. A preset may scale the source; set the intended dimensions and encode a short sample again.
- The output has a lower frame rate than expected: inspect the preset’s frame-rate limit and confirm that you selected the intended rate and CFR/VFR mode.
- Motion looks uneven after conversion: compare the source and output rates. CFR conversion between different rates can duplicate or omit samples; try preserving source timing with VFR if the destination supports it.
- Audio and video drift or duration changes: inspect the full test sample, not just a still frame. Verify the chosen timing mode and rate before processing the complete recording.
- OBS struggles at a higher frame rate: test the target in OBS; higher output frame rates can place more demand on the system. The OBS overview guide recommends testing system capacity, including for 60 fps.
- A recording was interrupted: for future OBS recordings, choose MKV for recovery resilience. If you need MP4, use OBS remuxing rather than re-encoding solely to change the container.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option from transcoding or playing a file in an OBS scene. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video to YouTube, not a camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
