How to Trade Tokenized-Asset Perpetual Swaps on Hyperliquid (HIP-3 Guide)

To trade a tokenized-stock, commodity, index, or other real-world-asset perpetual on Hyperliquid, first select the exact HIP-3 DEX and ticker, then verify that market’s oracle, collateral, margin mode, leverage limit, funding rules, open-interest cap, fees, and halt controls. Fund the required account with the specified collateral, use the initially supported isolated-margin mode, place an order sized for the market’s liquidity, and manage the position against the mark price and maintenance-margin requirement—not the last traded price.

HIP-3 is not one standardized tokenized-asset contract. It is Hyperliquid’s framework for permissionless, builder-deployed perpetual markets. Each deployer chooses important contract and operating parameters, so two markets that appear to track similar assets can have different collateral, leverage, oracle, funding, fee, liquidity, and settlement behavior.

What a HIP-3 perpetual is

Hyperliquid describes HIP-3 as support for “permissionless builder-deployed perps (HIP-3), a key milestone toward fully decentralizing the perp listing process.” In practical terms, a builder can deploy a perpetual market and define its contract specification, oracle, leverage limits, funding settings, open-interest controls, and operational procedures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A HIP-3 market may reference a tokenized equity, commodity, index, or another asset. The reference is market-specific: the ticker alone does not establish which instrument is tracked, how its price is sourced, or whether the market is currently operating. A perpetual has no expiry date. Instead, periodic funding payments are used to help keep its traded price aligned with the referenced price.

Trading a tokenized-asset perp gives you leveraged price exposure to the contract. It does not automatically give you ownership, voting rights, dividends, delivery rights, or custody of the referenced stock or real-world asset. Those rights would need to be explicitly defined by the market’s own terms.

How the contract is denominated

The standard design is generally a USDC-collateralized, USDT-denominated linear contract. Hyperliquid’s documentation describes these as technically quanto contracts because profit and loss is denominated in USDC even though the contract is quoted in USDT terms. Confirm the actual collateral token and settlement convention for the HIP-3 market you intend to trade; a familiar ticker does not guarantee the standard arrangement.

Who controls what

  • Hyperliquid’s trading system provides the exchange and perpetual-trading infrastructure.
  • The HIP-3 deployer sets market-specific parameters, supplies or manages oracle updates, controls operational actions such as halts, and may define the market’s open-interest and margin configuration.
  • You, the trader, choose direction, size, leverage, order type, collateral allocation, and when to reduce or close the position.

Check the exact market before depositing funds

Start from the HIP-3 DEX and the full ticker, not from a ticker copied from a search result or another interface. A ticker can be reused or displayed differently across deployers. Open the market’s configuration and record the following items before transferring collateral.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item to verify Why it matters What to record
HIP-3 DEX and full ticker Identifies the actual deployer and contract rather than a look-alike symbol. DEX identifier, ticker, and referenced asset.
Reference and oracle Determines what the market is intended to track and what can move the mark price. Reference asset, oracle source, update method, and any stated limits or pauses.
Collateral token Determines what you must deposit and how profit, loss, and conversion risk are handled. Accepted collateral, settlement denomination, and account location.
Margin mode Determines whether collateral is shared or confined to one position. Supported mode; HIP-3 initially requires isolated-only margin.
Leverage and margin tiers Sets the maximum opening leverage and the maintenance requirement used later. Maximum leverage, integer choices, tier thresholds, and maintenance-margin schedule.
Funding Funding payments can add to or subtract from your position’s equity while it remains open. Funding interval, rate calculation, direction of payment, and any cap or special rule stated by the market.
Open-interest cap Limits how much exposure the market can carry and can prevent a new order from opening. Current cap, side-specific limits if shown, and what happens when the cap is reached.
Trading and builder fees Fees reduce equity and can be material when leverage or turnover is high. User trading fee, any builder fee, and whether the displayed rate is subject to change.
Halt and settlement controls A deployer can stop trading and settle positions under HIP-3 rules. Who can halt, the stated trigger, order-cancellation behavior, and settlement price rule.
Current status and liquidity A market can be listed yet inactive, thin, or unable to absorb your order. Active status, bid-ask spread, visible depth, recent trades, and expected slippage.

Do not treat a market as interchangeable with another market tracking the same nominal asset. The deployer controls the oracle and operational configuration, and each market can have its own liquidity and exposure limits.

Step-by-step: opening and managing a HIP-3 position

1. Select the DEX and ticker

In Hyperliquid’s supported trading interface or API, switch to the intended HIP-3 DEX and select the complete market symbol. Confirm the asset description and contract details against the market configuration. If an interface shows only a short symbol, use the DEX context and full market identifier to disambiguate it.

2. Read the configuration before funding

Write down the collateral token, maximum leverage, margin tiers, oracle description, funding settings, open-interest cap, fees, and halt policy. Check that trading is active. If the market’s required collateral is not the asset you hold, do not assume the interface will automatically convert it or that a deposit to a general account will be credited to this position.

3. Evaluate liquidity and the price you will actually receive

Inspect the spread, order-book depth, recent fills, mark price, and the relationship between the market’s oracle and an external reference. A familiar underlying can still have a shallow book. A market order may consume several price levels; use a limit order when controlling slippage is more important than immediate execution. The visible order-book price is not necessarily the liquidation price, and a thin book can make exiting difficult even when the reference asset itself is liquid elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Fund the correct account and select isolated margin

Deposit the collateral token specified by the market into the account and subaccount used for the trade. HIP-3 initially supports isolated-only margin, so the collateral assigned to a position is separated from unrelated positions rather than pooled as one cross-margin balance. Keep a buffer above the calculated opening margin for fees, funding, and adverse mark-price movement.

5. Choose direction, size, leverage, and order type

A long position benefits from a rise in the contract’s mark price; a short benefits from a fall. Choose an integer leverage from 1 up to that market’s configured maximum. Calculate notional exposure before sending the order, then choose a limit order if the spread or depth makes a market order expensive. Verify the side, quantity, price, leverage, collateral allocation, and estimated opening margin in the confirmation screen or API response.

6. Confirm the fill and start monitoring immediately

After execution, check the position’s notional size, entry information, mark price, unrealized profit or loss, funding accrual, margin ratio, and liquidation estimate. Leverage is checked when you open the position, but you remain responsible for the position’s leverage as its value and collateral change. Add isolated margin or reduce exposure if the buffer narrows.

7. Use risk-reducing exit orders and close before liquidation

Where the interface supports them, place take-profit and stop-loss orders appropriate to the market’s liquidity. Treat them as orders that may be affected by gaps, thin depth, halts, or execution conditions—not as a guaranteed liquidation substitute. To exit, reduce or close the position before maintenance-margin rules force liquidation. Confirm that the position size is zero and that any remaining orders have been cancelled or are intentionally left open.

Margin and leverage: the numbers that matter

Opening margin = position size × mark price ÷ leverage.

Here, position size means the contract quantity and mark price produces the position’s notional value. Leverage is an integer from 1 to the market’s configured maximum. The formula describes the margin needed to open the position; it is not a promise that the position can withstand an adverse move of exactly 1 divided by leverage. Fees, funding, maintenance margin, price changes, and market-specific tiers alter the amount of room you actually have.

Illustrative calculation

Suppose, purely as an example, that a position’s notional value at the mark price is 20,000 USDT-equivalent and you select 5× leverage. The opening-margin relationship gives 20,000 ÷ 5 = 4,000 units of the market’s required collateral, before fees and any additional buffer. This is an illustration of the formula, not a quoted requirement for any particular HIP-3 market. The market configuration determines the collateral asset, exact mark value, and maintenance schedule.

Why isolated margin changes the failure mode

With isolated margin, liquidation of one position is constrained to the collateral assigned to that position; it does not consume collateral from unrelated cross positions. Isolation limits contagion between positions, but it does not make a position safe. A small isolated allocation can reach maintenance margin quickly, especially at high leverage or when funding and fees reduce equity.

Read the market’s maintenance-margin tiers as carefully as its maximum leverage. Initial margin governs opening; maintenance margin governs whether the position may remain open. Larger notional tiers can require a different maintenance percentage, and no single liquidation percentage applies to every HIP-3 market.

How liquidation works and why the mark price is decisive

Liquidation is determined by maintenance-margin rules and the market’s mark price. The mark price combines external centralized-exchange prices with Hyperliquid order-book state, so it can diverge from the last traded price or from the best bid and ask visible at a particular moment. During volatility, or when leverage is high, that difference can be enough to change the liquidation estimate before a new trade appears in the book.

Do not use the last trade as your liquidation trigger

The last traded price only tells you where a transaction occurred. It is not the rule used to decide whether maintenance margin has been breached. Monitor the mark price shown for the position and the associated maintenance or liquidation estimate. If an external reference price moves while the local book is quiet, the mark can change without a matching last-trade print.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the displayed estimate moves

  • Unrealized profit or loss changes as the mark price changes.
  • Funding payments and trading fees change the equity available to support the position.
  • Maintenance requirements can depend on the market’s notional tier.
  • Oracle inputs and the order-book component of the mark can change during volatility.
  • Adding isolated collateral or reducing notional exposure increases the buffer, while withdrawing collateral or increasing exposure reduces it.

The displayed liquidation estimate is therefore a moving risk indicator, not a guaranteed execution price. If liquidation begins in a fast or thin market, the eventual fill can differ from the estimate. Plan to reduce exposure before the estimate becomes imminent.

Funding, fees, and the cost of staying open

Funding on a perpetual contract

Perpetuals use funding payments to help keep the contract aligned with its underlying reference. The rate, interval, methodology, and caps are market-specific. Depending on the rate and your position side, funding can be paid by you or paid to you. Check the live funding display and the market’s specification before assuming that holding a position is cost-neutral.

HIP-3 fee relationship

The current HIP-3 specification states that users pay twice the usual fees charged on validator-operated perpetuals. Treat that as a current documented relationship, not a permanent guarantee; protocol parameters can change. The builder-code documentation currently states a maximum perp builder fee of 0.1%, also subject to parameter changes. Check the fee shown for the selected market before submitting an order and include it in your margin buffer.

Collateral and denomination risk

Because the standard design is generally USDC collateral with a USDT-denominated linear contract, your account balance, contract quote, and profit-and-loss denomination are not necessarily the same token representation. The technical quanto treatment means P&L is denominated in USDC. A market can specify a different arrangement, so confirm it rather than inferring it from the ticker.

Cost or adjustment When it affects you How to account for it
Opening and closing trading fees Whenever an order executes. Reserve collateral for both entry and exit, especially if you plan frequent turnover.
Builder fee If the HIP-3 market applies one under its builder-code configuration. Check the current displayed rate; the documented cap is 0.1% and may change.
Funding At the market’s funding intervals while the position remains open. Monitor the rate and direction; include expected payments in your holding-cost estimate.
Adverse mark-price movement Continuously while the position is open. Use lower notional exposure or more isolated collateral to preserve a buffer.
Slippage When available depth is insufficient for your order size. Prefer a limit order and divide large orders when the market’s rules and liquidity permit.

HIP-3-specific risks and ways to control them

Deployer and oracle risk

The deployer is responsible for oracle updates and can operate the market under its HIP-3 controls. Stale, erroneous, or manipulable inputs can affect the mark price, funding relationship, and liquidation process. Before trading, identify the oracle source, how often it updates, what fallback behavior is stated, and who can pause the market. If you cannot explain how the mark is produced, reduce size or avoid the market.

Liquidity and open-interest risk

Every HIP-3 market can have its own open-interest cap and liquidity profile. A tokenized version of a widely known asset does not guarantee a deep Hyperliquid book. Thin depth can create large entry and exit costs, widen the gap between a displayed quote and an executable price, and make a stop order difficult to fill. Compare your intended notional with visible depth rather than with the capitalization or trading volume of the external reference.

Collateral and fee risk

The quote and collateral asset affect how gains, losses, fees, and funding appear in your account. A collateral mismatch or unexpected conversion assumption can leave less usable margin than planned. HIP-3’s current fee relationship—twice the usual validator-operated perp fees—also makes high-turnover strategies more sensitive to costs.

Halt and settlement risk

A HIP-3 deployer can halt trading. Under the HIP-3 rules, a halt can cancel orders and settle positions at the current mark price. That price may not match the last traded price or the external asset’s most recent quote. Read the market’s halt and settlement provisions before committing collateral, and keep position sizes small enough that an operational event does not threaten your overall account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leverage and funding risk

Higher leverage leaves less room for an adverse mark-price move and gives funding and fees a larger effect on the remaining equity. Leverage is not merely a way to reduce the opening deposit; it increases the notional exposure that maintenance margin must support. Use the lowest leverage that fits the trade thesis and keep a deliberate collateral buffer.

How to compare two HIP-3 markets

If two deployers offer contracts referencing the same or similar asset, compare the complete market design rather than choosing by ticker or maximum leverage. The following axes expose the differences that most affect execution and liquidation.

Comparison axis Questions to ask Why it changes the decision
Oracle quality and transparency What feeds the oracle? How are updates made, and is fallback behavior documented? Oracle inputs influence the mark price, funding alignment, and liquidation.
Liquidity, spread, and open-interest cap How much depth is available near the mark, and how much exposure can the market carry? Determines slippage, ability to exit, and whether new orders can be accepted.
Collateral and margin mode Which token is required, and is the position isolated? Changes funding needs, denomination, and how liquidation affects other positions.
Maximum leverage and margin tiers What is the integer leverage range, and when do maintenance requirements change? Maximum leverage is not the same as safe leverage; tiers determine the maintenance buffer.
Funding rate and methodology How often is funding charged, and how is the rate calculated? Funding can turn a profitable price move into a losing hold or materially reduce equity.
Fees What user, builder, and execution fees apply right now? Fees compound with turnover and matter more when the position is small relative to notional.
Halt and settlement controls Who can halt the market, what happens to orders, and at what mark are positions settled? Operational controls can determine the exit price during an incident.

A market with lower advertised leverage may be preferable if it has a clearer oracle, deeper book, lower funding burden, and more predictable settlement. A high maximum does not compensate for poor liquidity or opaque mark-price inputs.

A practical monitoring routine

Before entry

  • Confirm the HIP-3 DEX, full ticker, reference asset, and active status.
  • Verify collateral token, denomination, isolated-margin requirement, leverage ceiling, and maintenance tiers.
  • Review oracle, funding, open-interest cap, fee, halt, and settlement settings.
  • Estimate notional value, opening margin, entry and exit fees, and a collateral buffer.
  • Compare order size with spread and visible depth; decide whether a limit order is necessary.

While open

  • Watch mark price, not only last trade or external reference quotes.
  • Track margin ratio, liquidation estimate, unrealized P&L, funding, and fees.
  • Recheck open-interest and market-status notices if orders stop accepting or fills become unusual.
  • Add isolated collateral or reduce notional exposure when the buffer narrows.
  • Keep take-profit and stop-loss orders consistent with available depth and the possibility of slippage.

When exiting

  • Reduce exposure before maintenance margin becomes critical.
  • Use an order type suited to current depth; a market order can cross a wide spread in a thin market.
  • Confirm the fill, remaining quantity, and any residual orders.
  • After a halt or settlement event, verify the final position and collateral balance at the stated mark price.

What the official figures do—and do not—tell you

The HIP-3 specification states a 500,000 HYPE staking requirement for a builder, and the builder-code documentation states a 0.1% maximum perp builder fee. Both are documented parameters that may change. They describe deployment and fee limits; they do not establish that a particular tokenized-asset market is liquid, safe, or profitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Official material does not provide one stable, topic-wide figure for current tokenized-asset perpetual volume, the number of listed markets, or trader win rates. Do not use an invented aggregate statistic to judge a market. Evaluate the specific DEX, live depth, mark-price behavior, funding, and configuration instead.

Bottom line for a first trade

Treat every HIP-3 tokenized-asset perpetual as its own product. Verify the deployer’s configuration, oracle, collateral, isolated-margin rules, leverage tiers, funding, fees, liquidity, open-interest cap, and halt policy before depositing. Size from the opening-margin formula, retain a buffer for maintenance margin and costs, and manage liquidation risk using the mark price. The ticker may resemble a familiar stock or commodity, but the contract’s deployer-defined mechanics determine what can happen to your position.
