The safest sequence is backup, disconnect, reset, then hand the phone to a qualified destination. A working, intact smartphone can usually be traded in or donated after you remove your accounts and personal data. A dead, badly damaged, water-damaged, or battery-compromised phone belongs with a manufacturer, retailer, local electronics program, or certified recycler instead. Never put a phone or a loose lithium-ion battery in household garbage or curbside recycling.
Your choice depends on three questions: can the phone still be used safely, have you disconnected every account and storage path, and can the recipient handle both batteries and data responsibly? The steps below cover all three.

Choose the right route before you wipe the phone
Do not start by searching for the highest offer. First classify the device’s condition and your goal. A trade-in is appropriate when the phone works and has resale value. Donation makes sense when you want a usable phone to benefit a community organization. Recycling is the correct endpoint for a phone that is dead, obsolete, physically damaged, ineligible for trade-in, or unsafe to keep using.

|---|---|---|
| Trade-in | Working phones with resale value | Quoted value, condition rules, payment timing, shipping risk, and whether a carrier-locked phone is accepted |
| Donate | Working phones you want reused for community benefit | Charity reputation, accepted models, tax documentation, included accessories, and the organization’s data-handling policy |
| Recycle | Dead, damaged, obsolete, or ineligible phones | Battery handling, R2 or e-Stewards certification, data-destruction policy, fees, and local drop-off or mail-in rules |
Availability and terms vary by country, state, phone model, condition, and carrier. A program that accepts one model may reject another, and a quoted trade-in amount can change after inspection. Treat the quote and acceptance rules as specific to your device, not as a universal price.

When a trade-in is the practical choice
Use a trade-in when the screen, frame, cameras, charging system, and battery are in usable condition and the program’s condition definition fits the phone. Read whether the service requires the phone to power on, whether a carrier lock is allowed, and what happens if inspection finds damage. Compare the quoted amount with shipping risk and the time until payment, not just the headline offer. Do not send the device until you have completed the backup and account-removal steps.
Apple documents that Apple Trade In accepts devices in stores and online. If a device is not eligible for credit, Apple says it can still be recycled free. The amount and eligibility are determined by the live program flow; there is no single value that applies to every model or condition.
When donation is better
Donate a phone that is safe, functional, and likely to be useful to the receiving organization. Ask in advance which models, operating systems, chargers, and accessories are accepted. Check the charity’s reputation, request tax documentation if you need it, and ask how it handles data on devices it receives. Some organizations refurbish phones for direct distribution; others resell them to fund programs. Those are different outcomes, so confirm which one you are supporting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen recycling is the only responsible option
Recycle a phone that will not power on, has severe water or impact damage, is obsolete for the intended user, or fails a trade-in or donation program’s rules. Choose a manufacturer, retailer, local electronics program, or recycler that explicitly accepts phones and lithium-ion batteries. For end-of-life devices, prefer an R2-certified or e-Stewards-certified recycler and read its data-destruction policy. A certification does not remove your obligation to reset the phone, but it gives you a verifiable standard for the downstream process.
Back up everything before you erase anything
A factory reset is deliberately destructive. The Federal Trade Commission says restoring or resetting a phone erases contacts, text messages, photos, videos, search history, and browsing history. It will not recover an item you forgot to transfer. The FTC also advises making a backup when setting up the replacement phone, so complete the transfer while the old device still works.

- Back up photos and videos. Confirm that the newest items have finished uploading or copy them to a computer or external storage.
- Transfer contacts and calendars. Check that the replacement phone shows the expected names, numbers, and appointments rather than assuming synchronization completed.
- Move messages and files. Use your phone maker’s transfer process where available, and separately copy downloads, recordings, documents, and notes that are not included in the default backup.
- Protect authenticator access. Move or re-enrol authenticator apps and two-factor methods before the old phone is wiped. Save recovery codes in a secure location and test a sign-in on the replacement device.
- Review app-specific data. Banking, password-manager, messaging, and health apps may require their own transfer or sign-out process.
- Verify the backup. Open the backup or cloud account on the replacement device and check representative photos, contacts, messages, and documents.
If the old phone is broken but still unlocks, prioritize the data transfer before repeatedly attempting repairs. If it cannot be unlocked, tell the recycler or service provider that the device may contain inaccessible data and ask what destruction process it uses.
Remove the physical SIM and microSD card
A physical SIM can contain personal information and a microSD card can hold photos, downloads, recordings, and app data. Remove both before handing over the phone. Use the phone’s eject pin or a compatible SIM-card ejector tool; do not force a tray with a sharp object that could damage the device.
Recommended Free Tools
- SIM: Keep it if you are reusing the number, or destroy it if it will not be reused. Follow your carrier’s replacement or cancellation process separately.
- microSD card: Keep it, transfer its contents, or erase it in a device that supports secure formatting. Do not assume a factory reset of the phone erases a card that was left inserted.
- eSIM: An eSIM has no removable tray. Follow the erase-eSIM choice during the iPhone reset process described below, or use the phone’s account and cellular settings to remove the profile before handoff.
Disconnect accounts, trusted devices, and accessories
Resetting the screen is not the same as releasing the phone from your accounts. A recipient can be blocked by an ownership lock if your account remains attached, and you may lose access to sign-in approvals if the old phone is still your trusted device.
- Remove the phone from account device lists. Review your Apple, Google, and Microsoft account security pages and remove the old phone from listed devices when the replacement is working.
- Sign out of account services. Sign out of cloud storage, email, messaging, password managers, and other services that keep a session on the handset.
- Move two-factor authentication. Re-enrol authenticator apps and update SMS, security-key, or backup-code methods so the old phone is not required for the next login.
- Unpair connected equipment. Remove watches, cars, headphones, speakers, trackers, and other Bluetooth devices. This prevents the recipient from seeing or controlling equipment that still trusts the phone.
- Remove payment and transit credentials. Delete cards, passes, and tickets from wallet applications and confirm they appear on the replacement phone if you still need them.
Keep the old phone powered on and connected until these checks are complete. If you reset first, you may have to recover accounts through slower verification or a service provider.
Factory-reset the phone and verify the handoff screen
Use the built-in erase function rather than manually deleting individual photos and apps. The exact menu labels change by operating-system version and manufacturer, so use the Settings search field for “factory reset,” “erase all content,” or similar wording if the menu is not where you expect.

- What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
- Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
- How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
- The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
- Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
iPhone procedure
Apple’s support instructions dated June 12, 2026 call for the following sequence:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Back up the iPhone and complete the transfer to the replacement device.
- Sign out of Apple services and remove the old iPhone from trusted devices.
- If you are moving from iPhone to Android, deregister iMessage so messages are not diverted from the new platform.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- When prompted about an eSIM, choose the option to erase the eSIM profile if the phone is leaving your possession.
- Complete the erase and activation steps. Apple states that erasing turns off Find My and Activation Lock.
When the process finishes, stop at the initial setup or “Hello” screen. Do not sign back in to demonstrate that the phone works; the recipient should be able to begin setup with their own account.
Android procedure
Android menu names differ among manufacturers and versions. After backing up and removing the phone from your Google and other account device lists, open Settings and search for factory reset or erase all data. Read the confirmation screen carefully, then start the reset and wait for it to finish. If the phone offers separate choices for internal storage, an eSIM, or an inserted memory card, select the components that are leaving with the device and keep any card you intend to retain.
When the phone returns to its first-run setup screen, do not proceed through account enrollment. If it still displays your name, asks for your account, or opens to a home screen, the reset or account removal is incomplete. Repeat the account review and reset before shipping or donating it.

Handle swollen, hot, punctured, or dead batteries safely
Lithium-ion batteries can ignite when crushed, shorted, overheated, or packaged incorrectly. Do not place a phone or loose battery in household garbage or curbside recycling.
If the battery is swollen, hot, punctured, smoking, or leaking
- Stop using and charging the phone immediately.
- Keep it away from paper, fabrics, fuel, and other flammable materials.
- Do not press the case flat, remove a swollen battery yourself, or puncture it.
- Contact your local household-hazardous-waste or electronics program for handling instructions.
- Do not mail the device until the carrier and recycler confirm that they accept the condition and specify the required packaging and transport method.
If the phone is merely dead but the battery is not visibly damaged, still disclose that it does not power on. The receiving program may have a different intake and packaging rule for nonfunctional devices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Find a qualified destination
Start with the device maker, a retailer’s electronics program, your local authority, or a recycler that publishes its battery and data procedures. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency names Call2Recycle, Earth911, and Greener Gadgets as search routes for electronics drop-off information, while noting that it does not endorse individual providers. Local acceptance rules control: a location may accept phones but reject loose batteries, damaged devices, or mail-in shipments.
Questions to ask a recycler
- Do you accept this phone’s condition and battery type?
- Is the operation R2-certified or e-Stewards-certified?
- How is data destroyed if the phone cannot be reset?
- Are there fees, quantity limits, or appointment requirements?
- Can I drop it off locally, or do you provide approved mail-in packaging?
- What receipt, certificate, or tracking record will I receive?
Keep the answer in writing when possible. A vague promise to “wipe” a device is less useful than a stated data-destruction process and a record of intake.

Recycling recovers materials that would otherwise require new mining. The EPA, citing a 2006 U.S. Geological Survey estimate, reports that recycling one million cell phones can yield 35,000 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium. Those figures describe the material content of a million recycled phones, not a guaranteed amount recovered from one particular handset, and they do not change the need for safe battery handling.

Reuse generally keeps a functioning device in service longer, while recycling is preferable when continued use would be unsafe or impractical. Do not donate a phone with a hazardous battery simply to avoid recycling; disclose the condition and use the program equipped to manage it.
Common failure points and fixes
The recipient says the phone is still locked to your account
Ask for the exact lock message. If the phone is an iPhone, confirm that Find My and Activation Lock are off and that the device is removed from your trusted devices. For any platform, review Apple, Google, and Microsoft device lists, sign out where necessary, and perform the factory reset again. Never share your account password with a recipient or recycler.
You forgot the SIM or microSD card
Contact the recipient immediately and ask them not to activate or discard anything found in the tray. If the device was mailed, request the card’s return and replace the SIM through your carrier if necessary. A missing microSD card should be treated as a possible data exposure until you recover it or remotely protect the accounts that used its data.
The backup did not include an authenticator or messages
Use the old phone, if it still works, to re-enrol the authenticator and complete the transfer. Generate replacement recovery codes and test sign-in from the new phone before wiping the old one. If the old device is unavailable, use each service’s account-recovery process rather than repeatedly guessing credentials.
A mailed trade-in is downgraded or rejected
Compare the inspection result with the program’s written condition rules and your photographs. Keep the tracking and intake record, then follow the program’s dispute or return process. Do not send another device until you understand whether the issue was cosmetic damage, a carrier lock, a missing accessory, or a failure to power on.
A drop-off site refuses the battery or damaged phone
Do not leave the device at the door or place it in a public recycling bin. Ask the site for the correct household-hazardous-waste or electronics contact, then call ahead to a qualified program that confirms it can accept the condition. Transport only as instructed by that program.
