There is no universally safe leverage setting for crypto perpetual futures. The safer method is to use the lowest leverage that meets the trade objective, define the maximum cash loss before entering, keep substantial distance from the venue’s estimated liquidation price, and monitor mark price, maintenance margin, funding and available collateral throughout the position.
Perpetuals can remain open without a normal expiry, but leverage makes a small market move financially significant. A 20x position can lose its posted margin after roughly a 5% adverse move before fees, funding and maintenance-margin effects. The guide below explains how the mechanics fit together and how to build a process that limits damage when the market, the venue or your assumptions move against you.

What a crypto perpetual future is
A crypto perpetual future is a derivative contract designed to track an underlying asset or index without an ordinary expiration date. Coinbase describes perpetual-style futures as combining “no expiration, leverage, and 24/7 access.” You can therefore keep a position open beyond a monthly or quarterly contract cycle, but you must continue meeting the venue’s margin requirements and paying or receiving funding.
Recommended Free Tools
The contract normally trades near an index or spot reference rather than being settled by delivery of the underlying coin. Periodic funding transfers value between long and short holders. The funding mechanism is intended to pull the contract toward its reference price, but it is also a recurring debit or credit that changes your position’s economics while you wait.

Why the lack of expiry does not make a position low risk
With a dated future, the contract’s final settlement date is visible from the start. A perpetual removes that calendar deadline, but it does not remove risk. A position can be closed by your stop, by your own decision, or by the venue’s liquidation engine if your equity no longer covers the required maintenance margin. Funding, fees, price gaps, changing maintenance tiers and collateral rules can all make the cost of staying open increase over time.
Leverage: what it measures and why losses accelerate
Leverage is the ratio of your contract’s notional value to the initial margin posted to open it:
Leverage = position notional value ÷ initial margin
If a position has a $10,000 notional value and requires $1,000 of initial margin, its opening leverage is 10x. The margin is not a maximum loss guarantee. It is collateral supporting a much larger exposure, and the contract can lose value faster than you can react.
The 20x example
At 20x, the initial margin is approximately 5% of notional value. A move of roughly 5% against the position can consume the posted margin before trading fees, funding payments and maintenance-margin effects are included. This is the relationship highlighted in Coinbase’s current product explanation, reviewed in 2026; it is an illustration, not a promise that every venue liquidates at exactly 5%.
Real liquidation can occur sooner or later because venues apply maintenance tiers, mark-price formulas, fees, funding and other risk controls. A profitable move of the same size can produce a large percentage gain on margin, but the loss side is the danger: a relatively small underlying move can remove most or all of the collateral supporting the trade.
Why “maximum leverage” is not a target
The maximum displayed by an interface is an upper limit under that venue’s rules, not a safety recommendation. Maximum leverage can change with the contract, position size, maintenance tier, account type and jurisdiction. Selecting it simply because it is available leaves less room for ordinary volatility, funding and execution slippage.
Use the lowest leverage that achieves the required notional exposure. If the trade idea can be implemented without a derivative, removing leverage removes the liquidation mechanism, although the underlying asset can still fall substantially.
Initial margin, maintenance margin and equity
Initial margin is the collateral required to open a position. Maintenance margin is the minimum equity the venue requires to keep it open. The two amounts are not interchangeable: opening a position may require one amount, while continued operation requires your account to remain above a separate maintenance threshold.

Your relevant equity can include the position’s unrealized profit or loss and collateral accepted by the venue, less applicable liabilities. Fees, funding and realized losses reduce the resources available to support the position.
Margin ratio and the liquidation threshold
Coinbase defines margin ratio as:
Margin ratio = maintenance margin required ÷ total equity
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn Coinbase’s US derivatives risk table, 100% is the liquidation threshold. That figure is a venue-specific example, not a universal crypto rule. Another platform may use a different ratio, trigger, warning band or liquidation sequence, so read the contract specification and risk documentation for the exact account you are using.
As the ratio rises, your buffer shrinks. A ratio below the venue’s trigger does not mean the position is safe indefinitely: an adverse mark-price move, a funding debit, a fee or a maintenance-tier change can push it toward the threshold quickly.
Maintenance tiers can change the calculation
Many venues assign higher maintenance requirements as notional size increases. A position that crosses into a larger tier can therefore require more equity even if the market price is unchanged. Coinbase notes that margin requirements may rise in overnight or weekend windows. Treat any displayed liquidation price as conditional on the current tier and collateral rules, not as a permanent barrier.
Mark price, index price and last traded price
The number you see on a chart is often the last traded price: the price of the most recent match in that contract’s order book. Liquidation systems commonly use a mark price, an index-based fair price intended to reduce the effect of a brief, volatile or manipulable trade.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
CFTC comment materials explain that venues use mark price to reduce the influence of extreme last trades and liquidate when the position falls below maintenance margin. The mark-price formula and the underlying index constituents are venue-specific. A mark price can therefore reach a liquidation trigger even when the last-trade chart never prints the same level.
Why liquidation can happen when the chart did not touch your displayed price
- Different price series: Your chart may show last price while the risk engine uses mark price.
- Index movement: The mark price can move with the venue’s reference index even when that contract’s own order book looks quiet.
- Funding and fees: A debit reduces equity, narrowing the distance to the maintenance threshold without a matching chart move.
- Maintenance-tier changes: A larger notional tier or a temporary risk adjustment can increase the required maintenance margin.
- Execution timing: Liquidation engines can act during fast markets, before a chart refresh or before a candle’s final value is visible.
- Displayed-price assumptions: The quoted liquidation level is an estimate based on current inputs, not a guaranteed execution level.
When investigating an apparent early liquidation, compare the venue’s mark-price history, index methodology, maintenance tier, funding ledger, fee deductions and liquidation records rather than relying only on the last-price chart.
Funding rates: the cost of waiting
Funding is a recurring transfer between long and short holders. Its purpose is to help keep the perpetual contract aligned with its index. Depending on the rate and the side you hold, you either pay funding or receive it.

Funding is not the same as a trading commission. It repeats according to the contract’s schedule and can materially change a position held for many intervals. A strategy that appears profitable before funding can lose its edge if repeated debits exceed the expected price gain.

Binance explains that, when the account balance is insufficient, a funding payment can be deducted from position margin and change the liquidation price. The practical result is straightforward: a debit lowers equity, and a lower equity buffer brings the position closer to its maintenance requirement. A credit can improve the buffer, but you should not depend on receiving funding because the rate can change and the payment direction can reverse.
Before entering, identify the contract’s funding formula, interval, next payment time, historical variability shown by the venue and the collateral account from which the payment will be taken. Recheck those details if you keep the trade open across several intervals.
Isolated margin versus cross margin
Margin mode determines which collateral can support a position. The labels are widely used, but the exact treatment of unrealized profit, losses, shared balances and liquidation differs by venue. Read the platform’s definition before switching modes.
| Margin mode | Collateral boundary | Main benefit | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isolated | Collateral is assigned to a specific position under the venue’s isolated rules. | A loss in that position is generally separated from collateral assigned elsewhere, making the maximum allocated collateral easier to define. | The position has a smaller buffer; liquidation can occur while unused funds remain outside the isolated allocation. |
| Cross | Eligible account collateral is shared across positions under the venue’s cross-margin rules. | Profits or unused collateral elsewhere may help a position remain open. | A losing position can consume shared collateral and expose more of the account to a single adverse move. |
When isolated margin is easier to control
Isolated margin is usually the clearer choice when you want a position’s collateral risk separated from other trades. Allocate only the amount you are prepared to lose, and document how the venue handles manual additions, funding deductions, realized profit and liquidation of that position.

Cross margin can prevent an individual position from being liquidated as quickly because the risk engine may use shared collateral. That same feature can turn a single trade into an account-level loss. Monitor total account equity, not just the position’s headline leverage, and set an account-level loss limit before opening the trade.
A safer process from venue selection to exit
1. Confirm legal availability and contract terms
Check that derivatives trading is legally available to you in your jurisdiction and that the venue accepts your residence and account type. Read the contract specification, risk disclosure, margin schedule, funding rules, liquidation procedure, insurance or loss-sharing provisions, fees, withdrawal controls and customer-recourse terms.
Legal treatment is not uniform. A CFTC announcement dated May 29, 2026 categorized certain crypto perpetuals as foreign futures under specified conditions. That announcement does not make every perpetual available to every trader or settle the rules that apply to your location. Confirm the current terms that govern your account.
2. Define the maximum loss before choosing leverage
Set a maximum cash loss for the trade before looking at the platform’s leverage selector. The amount should include a buffer for entry and exit fees, expected funding and slippage. Do not size the position from the maximum notional the interface offers.

A simple planning relationship is:
Position notional ≈ maximum planned loss ÷ stop distance
For example, if you are willing to lose $20 and your planned exit is 2% from entry, a rough notional calculation is $1,000. You still need to reduce that amount if fees, funding, gaps, contract increments or an imperfect fill would push the actual loss above $20. This calculation sets a trade size; it does not predict the venue’s liquidation price.
3. Choose the lowest workable leverage
Once the notional is established, select the lowest leverage that supplies the required initial margin. Lower leverage gives the position more collateral relative to its notional and generally leaves a wider buffer before maintenance margin is reached. It does not remove market risk, and a large enough adverse move can still exhaust the account.
4. Select and verify margin mode
Use isolated margin when you need a clearly bounded collateral allocation, provided the venue’s implementation matches that goal. Use cross margin only when you intentionally accept shared-account exposure. Check the mode immediately after placing the order; an interface can retain the previous setting or apply different defaults to different contracts.
5. Place the exit plan before or with the entry
Define the price or condition that invalidates the trade, then place a suitable stop or other protective order where the venue supports it. Keep the planned exit comfortably away from the displayed liquidation estimate. A stop is an execution instruction, not a guarantee: fast markets can produce a worse fill, and a stop may fail to protect a position from every gap or outage.
6. Keep a wide liquidation buffer
The displayed liquidation price depends on mark price, maintenance tiers, fees, funding, collateral and venue formulas. It can move while the position is open. Do not treat the displayed number as the level at which you intend to exit. A planned exit should occur earlier, leaving room for a fast move, spread widening and delayed execution.
7. Monitor the risk inputs, not just the candle
During the trade, monitor:
- Mark price and the venue’s index components.
- Margin ratio, maintenance margin and the current maintenance tier.
- Available collateral and total account equity.
- Funding rate, next payment time and cumulative funding debits or credits.
- Open orders, order status and whether protective orders remain active.
- Fees, realized profit or loss and any collateral transfers.
- Venue notices about risk limits, maintenance windows or contract changes.
Coinbase notes that margin requirements can rise in overnight or weekend windows. If you cannot monitor those changes, reduce exposure or close the position rather than relying on a static liquidation estimate.
8. Reduce risk before forced liquidation starts
If the margin ratio is deteriorating, reduce or close the position before the venue’s forced-liquidation process begins. Reducing notional lowers the maintenance requirement and market exposure. Adding collateral can lower the immediate ratio, but it increases the capital at risk and does not replace a loss limit. Add funds only as a deliberate decision with a new maximum-loss calculation.

How liquidation generally works
Liquidation begins when the venue determines that account equity no longer covers the required maintenance margin under its risk engine. The exact sequence varies. Some venues reduce positions in stages; others close the position rapidly and may use an insurance fund or a loss-sharing mechanism for residual losses.
The process is not the same as your stop order. A stop is an instruction you choose; liquidation is a compulsory risk action by the venue. Liquidation may occur at a price different from the displayed estimate because the mark price, order-book liquidity, fees and funding can change during the event.
What can happen to collateral after liquidation
Read the venue’s rules for any remaining balance, liquidation fee, insurance fund, auto-deleveraging or loss-sharing mechanism. The CFTC warns that leveraged futures traders may have to refill margin or close positions and may lose more than their initial investment. Whether a particular account can go negative, and how a deficit is handled, depends on the venue, product and legal terms.
Comparing venues or contracts before you trade
Do not compare platforms using maximum leverage alone. Evaluate the full risk system:
| Comparison area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Legal access | Is the product available in your jurisdiction and for your account type? |
| Leverage and margin | What are the effective leverage limits, initial-margin rules and maintenance tiers at your intended notional? |
| Collateral mode | How are isolated and cross margin defined, and which balances can be used? |
| Price references | How are mark price and index price calculated, and where can you inspect their history? |
| Funding | What formula, interval, payment direction and deduction order apply? |
| Liquidation | What triggers liquidation, is it partial or full, and what happens during a rapid market? |
| Loss sharing | Are there insurance-fund, auto-deleveraging or other loss-allocation provisions? |
| Execution costs | What are the trading and liquidation fees, available liquidity and likely slippage for your size? |
| Custody and withdrawals | How are deposits, withdrawals, account security and collateral transfers controlled? |
| Customer recourse | Which entity provides the service, what disclosures apply and what complaint or recovery channels exist? |
Common failure modes and practical fixes
“I used a stop, so liquidation was impossible.”
A stop can execute late, fill at a worse price or fail during an outage. If the position reaches the maintenance threshold before the stop completes, the venue’s liquidation engine takes priority. Use lower leverage, smaller notional and a larger buffer between the stop and liquidation estimate.
“The last-price chart never reached liquidation.”
Check mark price and the index rather than only last price. Review the exact timestamp of the liquidation, the mark-price history and any rapid index move.
“I added collateral and the problem was solved.”
Adding collateral may reduce the immediate margin ratio, but it increases the amount exposed to the trade. Recalculate the maximum loss, reduce notional if necessary and decide whether the original trade thesis still holds.
“Funding was tiny, so I ignored it.”
A single payment may be small, but repeated debits can erode margin. Record the next payment time, estimate a conservative funding allowance and include cumulative funding in the exit decision.
“Cross margin is safer because it delays liquidation.”
Cross margin can provide a larger buffer for one position, but it can also consume collateral intended for other trades. If shared-account exposure is not intentional, isolated margin and smaller sizing are easier to control.
“The leverage number tells me my risk.”
Leverage describes exposure relative to initial margin; it does not capture stop distance, volatility, liquidity, funding, fees, correlation with other positions or the amount of your account at risk. Measure risk in currency and in percentage of account equity as well as in leverage.
Pre-trade checklist
- The venue is legally available to you, and you have read the current contract and risk terms.
- You know the notional, initial margin, maintenance tier and effective leverage.
- You have written a maximum loss that includes fees, funding and slippage.
- The margin mode is intentionally selected and verified.
- The planned exit is well before the displayed liquidation estimate.
- You know which price—mark, index or last—is used for liquidation.
- You know the funding formula, interval and payment source.
- You can monitor margin ratio, available collateral, open orders and venue notices.
- You have decided in advance whether you will reduce, close or do nothing if the ratio deteriorates.
- You will not add collateral without a new account-level loss calculation.
Key takeaways for safer perpetual trading
Leverage amplifies losses as well as gains and can require more margin than the original deposit. Maintenance margin is the equity minimum for keeping a position open, and crossing a venue’s threshold can start forced liquidation. Mark price can trigger that process even when the last trade is elsewhere. Funding can steadily reduce margin and move the liquidation estimate. Because formulas, tiers, legal treatment and customer protections differ, the only defensible meaning of “safe” is a process that limits the amount at risk, leaves room for ordinary volatility and is checked against the current rules of the specific venue and contract.
