How to Track Your Video Game Backlog and Play History

The most sustainable game-tracking system records four things: the game, where you own or access it, its current status, and—when you want a history—the date of each playthrough or session. Start with those fields, then add time, ratings, or notes only when they help you make a decision. A backlog answers “What do I still want to play?” A play history answers “What have I played, and when?” Keeping those questions separate prevents an enormous, abandoned list.

Decide what you are actually trying to remember

Backlog tracking and play-history tracking overlap, but they are not the same record. Your backlog contains games you intend to play. Your history contains games you started, finished, abandoned, replayed, or sampled. Treating every title as one undifferentiated list makes it difficult to see what is unfinished and impossible to reconstruct a meaningful personal history later.

A backlog is a decision queue

A backlog should help you choose your next game. Its useful states are usually Backlog, Playing, Played, and Wishlist. You can add a priority or a reason for keeping a title, but only if that information changes what you do next. A game you merely want to remember is not necessarily a game you plan to start soon.

A play history is an activity record

A history becomes more valuable when it distinguishes separate playthroughs. Finishing a campaign once and returning three years later are two different experiences, even though they belong to the same game. A dated completion entry, a playthrough number, or a session journal preserves that distinction. If you only need a list of games you have finished, a single Played status is enough.

Use a small field set first

Begin with the minimum information that answers your questions. The following fields are a practical starting point rather than an industry standard:

  • Game: Use one title record for the game, and keep editions or remasters distinct only when that difference matters to you.
  • Platform or storefront: Record where you own or access it, such as a console, PC storefront, or subscription library. This prevents buying a game twice and helps you find the right install.
  • Status: Choose Backlog, Playing, Played, or Wishlist. Add Abandoned or On hold if those states describe your habits better.
  • Playthrough or completion date: Add the date when you finish, and a separate playthrough entry when you replay.

Only after this works should you add daily sessions, hours, ratings, reviews, screenshots, tags, or free-form notes. Every extra field creates maintenance work. A field that you never use is clutter, not detail.

Choose a tracking method you will maintain

There is no universally best tracker. The right choice depends on whether you value detailed journals, collection organization, automatic importing, exportable data, or a public profile. The documented options below solve different problems.

Method Documented strengths Best fit
Backloggd Collection tracking; ownership and platform fields; Played, Playing, Backlog, and Wishlist statuses; ratings; wishlist; time tracking; daily journal; multiple logs for a title; social profile; mobile-optimized website Players who want each playthrough and dated sessions recorded in detail
Grouvee Playing, Played, Backlog, and Wish List shelves; unlimited custom shelves; Steam library import; ratings and reviews; a timeline of games played; CSV export Players who want flexible shelves, a timeline, and a local copy of their data
Spreadsheet Custom columns, personal control over the format, and independence from a tracker interface Players with unusual categories or a preference for manual records

The service descriptions document features, not comparative speed, accuracy, privacy, or long-term reliability. Choose based on the workflow you can keep current, not on an assumption that one platform is objectively superior.

Set up Backloggd for detailed playthroughs

Backloggd is designed around a personal game collection and individual logs. Its documented statuses are Played, Playing, Backlog, and Wishlist. A log represents a playthrough, so one title can have multiple logs when you replay it.

Build the collection

  1. Create an account and add the games you own or can access.
  2. Set the platform or ownership information for each entry. This lets you separate, for example, a console copy from a PC copy.
  3. Assign a status. Put games you intend to play in Backlog, an active game in Playing, completed games in Played, and possible future purchases in Wishlist.
  4. Add a rating only after you have enough experience with the game to make the rating meaningful.

The official about material says account creation and current features are free, with an optional Backer status. Its help material describes the website’s mobile view as optimized for phone screens; that evidence does not establish a separate native mobile app.

Record a playthrough and daily sessions

When you start a game, create or update its log rather than merely changing a shelf. The journal calendar lets you mark the days you played. Add time when you want a quantitative record, and use notes for context that a status cannot capture: a co-op partner, a difficulty setting, a paused campaign, or why you stopped.

For a replay, create another log instead of overwriting the first. This preserves the dates and notes from the original run and lets you compare experiences without pretending they were one continuous session.

Use the library views added in September 2026

Backloggd’s September 16, 2026 changelog documents library entry pages grouped by ownership, platform, storefront, or no grouping. Those library-specific pages include filters and search. Use the grouping that matches your question: ownership for “what can I play now,” platform for “what belongs on this device,” and storefront for “where do I launch it.”

Organize Grouvee with shelves and a timeline

Grouvee provides the core Playing, Played, Backlog, and Wish List shelves, plus unlimited custom shelves. Custom shelves are useful when the four default states do not explain your collection. Examples include “short games,” “co-op with friends,” “paused,” or “replay someday.” Keep custom shelves descriptive rather than turning them into dozens of overlapping labels.

Import a Steam library

Grouvee documents a Steam library import that runs once a day. The service also notes that some imported games may need manual mapping when an automatic match is not correct. After the first import, review the matches before treating the resulting collection as authoritative. Check titles with regional names, bundles, demos, early-access entries, or multiple editions especially carefully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the timeline as your history view

The play timeline provides a chronological view of games played. Shelves answer what state a game is in; the timeline answers how your activity unfolded. Ratings and reviews can capture your judgment, while the timeline keeps the date-oriented record. Keep those functions separate: a review explains an opinion, whereas a timeline entry records an event.

Keep a CSV copy

Grouvee documents CSV export. Export periodically and store the file somewhere you control. A local copy gives you a fallback if you later change services or want to analyze your collection in a spreadsheet. Treat an export as a snapshot: after editing the file, it is no longer automatically synchronized with your online shelves.

Build a spreadsheet when you need complete control

A spreadsheet is a reasonable alternative when you want columns or categories that a service does not provide. Community members also report using spreadsheets for backlog records, but those reports are anecdotal rather than evidence that a spreadsheet is easier for everyone.

Recommended columns

  • Platform or storefront
  • Ownership source
  • Status
  • Started date
  • Completed date
  • Playthrough number
  • Session notes
  • Rating

Use one row per playthrough if history matters. If you use one row per game, repeated playthroughs will overwrite one another unless you create additional date columns, which becomes difficult to filter. A second sheet for sessions is often cleaner: the first sheet stores the game and current status; the second stores one row for each date played, duration, and note.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep status values consistent

Use a fixed list rather than typing free-form variations such as “playing,” “in progress,” and “currently playing.” Consistent values make filters and counts reliable. If you need a temporary state, add it deliberately—such as On hold or Abandoned—instead of inventing a new spelling each time.

Log sessions without turning play into paperwork

Daily tracking is useful when you want to know how often you play, how long a campaign took, or where a break occurred. It is unnecessary if your only goal is a completed-games list.

Choose a logging moment

The easiest routine is to record a session immediately after stopping. Enter the date, game, approximate duration, and one short note. If you wait until the end of the week, small sessions blur together and estimates become less trustworthy. A recurring reminder can help until the habit is established.

Use a timer only when it answers a question

Community members report using timers or stopwatches when their platform does not provide daily duration. This is a manual convenience, not a requirement. Start the timer when you begin and stop it for meaningful interruptions if you care about active play time. Otherwise, record an approximate duration and label it as an estimate in your note.

Do not confuse platform totals with your own history

A platform’s lifetime play-time figure may include idle menus, background sessions, or activity from another device. Use it as a reference, not as a substitute for dated personal entries when accuracy matters.

Design a routine that survives a busy month

At the start of a game

  1. Add the title to your collection and select the platform or storefront.
  2. Move it from Backlog or Wishlist to Playing.
  3. Create a playthrough log or a spreadsheet row.
  4. Set a reminder to record sessions if you want daily detail.

After a session

  1. Record the date and duration, using an estimate if necessary.
  2. Add one useful note: a milestone, a decision, a difficulty change, or a reason for stopping.
  3. Leave the status as Playing unless the game is complete, abandoned, or intentionally paused.

When you finish

  1. Enter the completion date.
  2. Change the status to Played.
  3. Add a rating or review while your impressions are fresh, if you use those fields.
  4. Keep the playthrough log so a future replay can be recorded separately.

During a monthly cleanup

  • Remove duplicates created by different editions or import matches.
  • Check that every Playing title is genuinely active.
  • Move stalled games to On hold or Abandoned if those states help you make decisions.
  • Review your next few backlog choices rather than reclassifying the entire collection.

Handle common edge cases deliberately

Games you started but never finished

Do not force an unfinished game into Played. Keep it Playing while you intend to return, or create an Abandoned or On hold state. If you later restart it, record a new playthrough or a new start date so the gap remains visible.

Games completed before you started tracking

Add the title as Played and use an approximate completion year or an undated historical entry if your system allows it. Do not invent a precise day. A clearly marked estimate is more useful than false precision.

Free weekends, demos, and borrowed copies

Include them only if they answer a question you care about. If you want a complete activity history, record them with an ownership note such as borrowed or trial. If your list is strictly a purchased backlog, keep temporary access in a separate shelf or exclude it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiple editions and remasters

Track editions separately when the platform, content, achievements, or save system differs. Otherwise, one game record with multiple platform or ownership entries avoids duplicate backlog items.

Subscription access

Record the service or storefront as the access source and review the title periodically. Access can change even when your interest in the game does not, so an access field is more informative than a simple owned/not-owned flag.

Compare the options by the decision you need to make

Use this decision framework instead of trying to rank services generally:

  • Choose Backloggd when separate playthroughs, dated journal days, time tracking, platform ownership, and a social profile are central to your record.
  • Choose Grouvee when shelves and custom organization matter, you want a documented Steam import, and you value a CSV copy and chronological timeline.
  • Choose a spreadsheet when you need unusual fields, want complete control over the file format, or prefer not to depend on a tracker interface.
  • Combine methods cautiously when one tool handles collection management and another handles detailed sessions. Pick one as the authoritative status list; otherwise the two records will drift.

Protect the usefulness of your data

Before committing years of history to any service, inspect its current documentation for privacy, retention, account recovery, and export terms. The available feature descriptions do not establish comparable privacy policies, long-term continuity, pricing for Grouvee, mobile availability for Grouvee, or whether Backloggd has a built-in export. Those factors can determine your choice, so verify them directly in the services’ current documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep periodic exports where a service provides them. For manual records, save dated copies of the spreadsheet rather than relying on a single live file. Use a stable naming convention such as game-log-2026-10.csv so you can identify the newest snapshot without opening every file.

Fix records that become inconsistent

Imported titles are wrong

Review automatic matches, especially for regional titles, bundles, demos, and remasters. Correct the mapping before adding ratings or session notes; otherwise your history may be attached to the wrong game.

Your backlog keeps growing

Separate ownership from intention. Move games you no longer expect to play out of Backlog and into Wishlist, Archived, or a similar holding category. A backlog is a decision queue, not a census of every game you have ever seen.

You stop logging sessions

Reduce the fields. Keep only game, date, and status for a month. If that routine survives, reintroduce duration or notes one field at a time. A sparse, current history is more useful than a detailed record abandoned after a week.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two tools disagree

Choose an authority for each type of data. For example, use a shelf-based service for current status and a spreadsheet for session details, or use one service for both. Record the last synchronization date in your notes and reconcile only changed entries rather than rebuilding everything.

A practical starting setup

For most players, the first evening of setup can be simple:

  1. Create four status groups: Wishlist, Backlog, Playing, and Played.
  2. Add only games you own or can currently access.
  3. Record platform or storefront for each title.
  4. Select one or two games as active Playing entries; leave the rest in Backlog.
  5. For the next session, record the date and a short note.
  6. After finishing, add the completion date and start a new log for any replay.

After a month, inspect which fields you actually used. Keep those fields, remove the rest, and choose a regular export or backup routine if your method supports one. The goal is not to document every minute; it is to make your next choice easier and your past play understandable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I track a backlog and play history in separate lists?

Use separate status and activity views, even if they live in one service. Status tells you what remains; playthrough or session entries preserve what happened. A single title can therefore be in Played while still having several dated history entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How precise should completion dates be for older games?

Use the precision you can support. If you remember only a year, record the year or an approximate date and label it as an estimate. Do not create an exact day simply to fill a field.

Is automatic library import enough to maintain a history?

No. An import can populate a collection, but it does not necessarily capture why you stopped, which playthrough you completed, or what happened on a particular day. Review imported matches and add the history details you care about.

What is the simplest system that still works?

Track game, platform or storefront, status, and completion date. Add a session date only when you want a daily history. Expand the system only when an additional field helps you choose, remember, or explain something.
