Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart a timer when your group tees off, then record elapsed time at the turn, any course-posted checkpoints, and the finish. Compare those times with the course’s own pace target. A phone or watch timer and a scorecard are enough; the goal is to spot delays and play promptly, not to rush or take unsafe shortcuts.
Use the course’s target, not a universal round time
There is no single round-time benchmark that applies to every course and playing condition. Check the course website, scorecard, starter instructions, pace clock, or posted signs for a target covering the round, individual holes, or intermediate checkpoints. Record the target on your scorecard if it is not already printed there.

Competition policies can be more specific than everyday course guidance. For example, the 2024 USGA Amateur Championships pace-of-play policy describes target times in per-hole and aggregate formats on stroke-play scorecards, and directs match-play players to ask a referee. That is a competition example, not a standard for recreational rounds. In competitions, officials may check group position at designated points, as described in USGA competition rules education.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTrack elapsed time at useful checkpoints
- Before the first tee: Find the course’s target and note any checkpoints. Choose a simple way to record times: use elapsed time on a watch or phone, or write clock times on the scorecard.
- At the start: Start the timer when your group tees off, or write down the start time.
- At the turn and posted checkpoints: Record elapsed time or the clock time. Compare it with the target when convenient; do not stop play to calculate a detailed gap.
- At the finish: Record the end time and compare the total with the course’s stated target.
These notes can show when time accumulated—for example, after a long ball search, repeated trips back to a cart, slow readiness, or a bottleneck. The USGA’s facility pace analysis considers group and hole times, gaps between groups, and bottlenecks. Applying a few checkpoints to your own round is a practical personal method, not a USGA-prescribed tracking system. If the course has no published target, your notes can still help compare your rounds on that course, but they cannot establish that you are behind a formal pace policy.

Keep pace without rushing
The USGA’s Tips and Suggestions for Improving Pace of Play puts it plainly: “Playing at a better pace is not about hurrying up or rushing around the course.” Its guidance suggests aiming to play in 20 seconds when it is your turn, measured from club selection through routine and execution. That is a recommendation for an individual shot, not a target for a hole or round.
- Prepare while others play: choose a club and plan your shot when it is safe and practical.
- Move promptly between strokes and toward the next tee, while following the course’s instructions.
- In stroke play, ready golf is allowed and encouraged when it is safe and responsible. Do not play out of turn if doing so could endanger or distract someone.
- Keep phone checks brief. A watch timer or a note on the scorecard can reduce handling your phone during the round.
What golf apps, GPS devices, and watches can—and can’t—tell you
GPS can help with yardage decisions, but it does not by itself tell you whether your round is on schedule. The USGA recommends developing an eye for distance and suggests finding a yardage marker before reaching the ball or using an electronic rangefinder or GPS when permitted by Local Rule. Those tools may streamline distance decisions; use a timer and checkpoints to measure elapsed time.

The current GHIN app listing describes score posting, hole-by-hole scoring and statistics, course maps and GPS, enhanced GPS functions such as shot tracking, group scorekeeping, and Apple Watch integration. The listing does not claim an individual pace-of-play timer. USGA GHIN support documentation explains enhanced GPS and shot-tracking setup, but does not establish that GHIN automatically measures an individual golfer’s pace. App features and availability can change, so check the current listing before relying on a particular feature. Likewise, do not assume every golf app, GPS watch, or cart GPS offers personal pace alerts.

A basic watch or phone timer is sufficient for personal timekeeping; a paid GPS watch is not necessary for this method. If you prefer paper, a golf scorecard notebook can hold start, turn, checkpoint, and finish notes. The recording is manual unless a product listing specifically confirms dedicated pace fields. Course scorecards vary, though some competition scorecards do include target times.

Use elapsed time to decide what to adjust
If a checkpoint shows that your group is behind the course’s target, look for a repeatable source of delay rather than trying to make up time with hurried swings. Be ready before your turn, move efficiently between shots, and follow any instructions from course staff or officials. Keep the timer unobtrusive: its value is in showing when time is accumulating, not adding another task to every shot.
