Track the three as separate signals, not as a single risk score: use the Bank of Japan’s USD/JPY rate for the yen against the U.S. dollar, its Yen Index for trade-weighted yen performance, Japan’s Ministry of Finance (MOF) JGB yield curve for interest rates, and Bitcoin price and volatility data with the exposure type clearly labeled.

How to tell whether the yen is strengthening
Read USD/JPY in the right direction
USD/JPY states how many yen are needed to buy one U.S. dollar. If the rate rises, the dollar buys more yen and the yen has weakened against the dollar. If the rate falls, the yen has strengthened against the dollar. That conclusion applies only to this currency pair.

Use the BOJ daily page for recent official observations and its time-series search for longer history. In the time-series data, USD/JPY spot observations at 9:00 and 17:00 JST are bid-offer mid rates. Label the observation date and time; these are reference observations, not necessarily live quotes. The BOJ notes that times are JST unless otherwise stated, and FX statistics can use different reference times and compilation methods.

Use the Yen Index for a broader view
To assess the yen against a group of trading partners rather than only the dollar, follow the BOJ’s Yen Index, a nominal effective exchange-rate index. Its methodology is basically based on the BIS effective-exchange-rate methodology, and trade weights are recalculated every three years. Because it aggregates currencies and uses weights, its movement need not match USD/JPY over a given interval.

How to track Japanese bond yields
Choose a maturity and record the release timing
The MOF’s JGB constant-maturity rates are semiannual-compound reference rates calculated from secondary-market prices of fixed-income JGBs at the 3 p.m. close. The ministry publishes them at 9:30 a.m. the next business day. A constant-maturity yield is the point on the yield curve corresponding to a chosen remaining maturity: the curve plots yields against remaining maturities.
Pick the maturity that matches the question you are asking, then keep it consistent when comparing dates. A short, intermediate, and long point describe different parts of the curve. When several maturities move, distinguish a broad change in yield levels from a change in the curve’s shape. Since each rate is derived from a curve formed from selected JGBs on a grid, do not treat it as the yield on one particular bond.

Add market-functioning context when needed
Yield levels do not describe how easily bonds trade. The BOJ’s quarterly Bond Market Survey covers market functioning and the outlook for long-term rates. It is conducted in February, May, August, and November, with results normally released on the first business day of the following month. The BOJ also publishes JGB liquidity indicators.

How to assess Bitcoin market risk
Separate price direction from volatility
A rising or falling Bitcoin price is not, by itself, a complete risk measure. Track the price and the volatility measure you have chosen, while recording the feed, instrument, and observation time. SEC and CFTC staff investor guidance describes Bitcoin, including exposure through Bitcoin futures, as highly speculative and warns of volatility and potential loss. These are staff investor warnings, not a Commission rule or a forecast of a particular outcome.
Identify the exposure behind the price
- Spot Bitcoin: Exposure to a spot-market price does not eliminate risks involving fraud or manipulation in the underlying market, cyber threats, platform safeguards, or conflicts of interest.
- Bitcoin-futures fund: A futures-based fund does not necessarily track spot Bitcoin closely. Futures prices can vary by delivery month, and funds periodically roll positions into later contracts.
- Margined futures: Leverage amplifies the effect of a move in the cash market. The CFTC advisory notes that profits and losses related to volatility are amplified in margined futures contracts.
A market-price feed cannot tell you whether your own position is leveraged, how a particular fund rolls contracts, or what custody and platform protections apply. Those risks depend on the product and venue.

How to compare the three signals without mixing them up
Keep a simple log or dashboard with a separate row for each observation. This makes asynchronous market and release schedules visible rather than implying that all the numbers describe the same instant.

Mark USD/JPY as bilateral, the Yen Index as nominal effective, a JGB yield as a specified curve maturity, and Bitcoin as the chosen spot market or product.
- Record the observation date, time, and time zone. For BOJ FX observations, preserve the stated reference time in JST. Do not label a dated observation as live.
- Record both market observation and publication time. MOF JGB yields refer to the 3 p.m. close and are released at 9:30 a.m. the next business day. FX and Bitcoin trade on schedules that do not line up automatically with that official release.
- State the maturity or exposure. Identify the JGB curve point and whether Bitcoin exposure is spot, a futures-based fund, or margined futures.
- Keep the limitations with the reading. Note that BOJ FX figures may be revised, USD/JPY is not a broad yen measure, JGB constant-maturity yields are curve-derived, and a Bitcoin price series does not capture every venue or product risk.
What these indicators can—and cannot—tell you
The official series describe currency movements, bond-market rates, and crypto-market conditions using different methods and timings. They do not establish a reliable causal rule linking a yen move, a JGB yield change, and Bitcoin’s direction, nor do they provide one threshold that predicts losses. Treat them as distinct context for understanding markets, not as a combined forecast or trade instruction.
