The reliable way to find profitable World of Warcraft crafting opportunities is to combine the correct market scope with timestamped price-and-quantity data, then test recipe margins against realistic selling conditions. A low listing is only an opportunity to investigate—not proof that an item sells or that a crafted product will be profitable.
This guide explains a repeatable Retail workflow: identify whether an item is a regional commodity or realm-bound item, capture current and historical observations, compare commodities by unit price, screen recipes using reagent quantities, and reject apparent margins when liquidity or evidence is weak.

What you need to measure before calling anything profitable
Auction House tracking answers three different questions, and each needs different evidence:

- What is listed now? A current snapshot gives a price and available quantity at a particular time.
- Is that level normal? Historical observations show whether the current listing is an isolated spike, a recurring range, or a stale record.
- Will my output sell at that level? A recipe calculation estimates a margin, but only actual demand and completed sales can confirm it.
Keep those questions separate in your notes or spreadsheet. A displayed price is not automatically a completed sale price, and a positive recipe margin is not a guaranteed return.

Choose the correct market scope
Regional commodities
Commodity materials are traded through a regional market. Examples include stackable reagents whose buyers can purchase units from the region-wide pool rather than only from one realm. For these items, track the regional market and compare prices per unit.
Realm or connected-realm items
Non-commodity items remain tied to a realm or connected-realm context. Crafted gear, many equipment pieces, and other individually listed items can therefore show a very different price and supply picture from regional reagents. Record the exact realm or connected realm whenever you save a price.
Confirm the game version
The Undermine Exchange API documentation describes the coverage used here as the latest Retail version, not Classic. Do not apply a Retail observation to Classic, Season of Discovery, or another ruleset without a data source that explicitly covers that version.

Use timestamped observations, not an undated “current price”
Every record should include the game-market snapshot time and the data service’s own update time. Undermine Exchange distinguishes Blizzard’s snapshot from its lastUpdated value. An item may also carry an older lastSeen value when its quantity is zero or when no newer observation was available.
That distinction prevents a common mistake: describing an old observation as a live bargain. Put the timestamps beside the price in your sheet, not in a separate note that can be lost.
Minimum fields for a price log
- Item name and item identifier, if your tool supplies one
- Retail version, region, and realm or connected-realm scope
- Snapshot timestamp
- Provider update timestamp, such as
lastUpdated lastSeen, when supplied- Current price and whether it is a unit price or a full-stack/listing price
- Available quantity
- Whether the value is a current listing observation or historical data point
When a service shows a zero quantity or an old lastSeen, flag the row as stale or unavailable rather than filling it with the last known price and calling that price current.
Track price and quantity together
Price alone cannot tell you whether you can buy reagents at the displayed level or sell a finished item into meaningful demand. Record quantity beside every price and look for both to move in a usable direction.

- A low price with only a few units may be an isolated listing that disappears before you can source a full recipe.
- A high price with a deep supply can be a more dependable procurement level than a cheap, one-unit listing.
- A crafted item with many competing listings may require a lower expected sale price than the visible lowest listing.
The Undermine Exchange API documents current price and quantity as well as history. Its hourly commodity history covers roughly the previous 14 days; daily history is also available. The documented hourly endpoint updates approximately every hour, but that cadence is not guaranteed. Treat the timestamp as authoritative for each observation rather than assuming an hourly refresh always occurred.
Compare commodities by unit price
For stackable materials, convert every observation to a per-unit figure before comparing it. A stack total can look cheap while being expensive per item, or look expensive while containing a much larger quantity.

Blizzard explained the Auction House change this way in its January 9, 2020 Visions of N’Zoth: Auction House Update Preview:
“When selling commodity items, rather than setting a price for stacks of items, you’ll be able to choose a unit price, allowing buyers the ability to decide how many of an item they wish to purchase.”

Use this calculation for a stack observation:
unit price = listed stack price ÷ number of units in the stack
Then compare the unit price with the quantity available at or near that level. Blizzard’s documented commodity behavior selects the lowest-priced units for the buyer’s chosen quantity, so the first visible unit price may not apply to the entire amount you need.
Example of a like-for-like comparison

The figures in this table are illustrative. In your own log, preserve the original stack information so another person can audit the conversion.
Build a history that reveals normal market levels
A single snapshot cannot distinguish a recurring market level from a temporary shortage. Use the available hourly and daily history to establish a reference range, while preserving the fact that the data represents observations or listings rather than verified completed sales.

- Choose the region and item.
- Save the latest price, quantity, snapshot time, provider update time, and any
lastSeenvalue. - Review the roughly 14-day hourly history when available.
- Note the daily history as a longer-granularity context.
- Mark unusual spikes, near-zero quantities, and long gaps between observations.
- Use a representative range—not the single cheapest point—as the input for a recipe screen.
For a realm-bound item
- Select the exact realm or connected realm.
- Record comparable listings with the same item level, quality, embellishments, and other relevant attributes.
- Separate genuinely comparable outputs from items that only share a name.
- Track how many comparable listings remain at each price band.
- Recheck after the market’s likely activity period rather than assuming one scan describes the whole day.
Do not turn provider refresh descriptions into a market-wide claim about sales behavior. The available service descriptions establish listing or snapshot prices and quantities; they do not establish that every displayed price was realized in a completed sale.
Choose a tracking tool by evidence, not by a single headline number
Different services answer different parts of the workflow. Compare them on the following dimensions before committing your records to one source.

Undermine Exchange
Undermine Exchange documents current price data and history, including regional commodity data and item data for individual realms. Its API documentation lists free and paid endpoint tiers. Use the documented fields and timestamps, and verify current access terms before building an automated process around any tier.

WoW Auction House data services
WoW Auction House describes its Retail data as coming from Blizzard auction data and describes addon or client uploads for other scans. That is a provider description, not an independent audit. Treat the source type and its freshness as part of your confidence assessment.

TheWoWDB describes recipe and reagent inputs as coming from current game-client data and prices as coming from Blizzard auction data. Its stated calculation excludes the player’s time and the crafting-orders market, so a displayed margin is only a first-pass estimate.
Screen a recipe without fooling yourself
A recipe screen should answer: “At the input prices I can actually obtain, is this output worth investigating?” It should not answer: “How much gold will I definitely make?”
Use the complete reagent requirement
- Open the current recipe and verify the required quantity of every reagent.
- For each reagent, use a unit price from the same market scope and a nearby timestamp.
- Multiply each unit price by the recipe quantity.
- Add the reagent subtotals to obtain the estimated material cost.
- Choose an expected output price based on comparable listings and history, not merely the cheapest visible listing.
- Subtract the material cost to obtain a preliminary gross margin.
The core calculation is:
estimated material cost = Σ (reagent unit price × required quantity)
preliminary margin = expected output price − estimated material cost
Keep the calculation’s assumptions visible: timestamp, region or realm, output variant, reagent quantities, and whether each price is a listing observation or another documented value.
Illustrative calculation

If a comparable output appears at 500 gold, the illustrative preliminary margin is 110 gold before considering whether the output actually sells, whether the observed inputs remain available, and whether your character can produce the required version. The numbers are examples, not a claim about a live market.
Apply a liquidity and uncertainty check
Before crafting, test the assumptions behind the margin.
Input liquidity
- Is enough reagent quantity available at the price used in the calculation?
- Would buying the full recipe push you into a more expensive price tier?
- Is the observation fresh enough for the market’s volatility?
Output liquidity
- How many comparable outputs are listed?
- Does the history show a recurring price range or only isolated listings?
- Is there documented sales-volume or sell-through information?
Do not claim a sell-through rate unless the chosen tool documents a sales-volume or completed-sale measure. A lowest listing can remain unsold, be undercut, or disappear because its owner canceled it.

Recipe and character constraints
- Can your character access the recipe and its quality or specialization requirements?
- Are the material quantities correct for the exact output variant?
- Are you evaluating a personal craft or a crafting-order transaction?
TheWoWDB methodology explicitly excludes player time and the crafting-orders market. If either matters to your decision, model it separately instead of treating the displayed recipe margin as complete profit accounting.

A simple log is enough to start; automation is useful only after the fields and definitions are stable.

Daily operating routine
- Refresh the materials you are considering and save timestamps.
- Normalize commodity observations to unit prices.
- Compare current values with the available hourly or daily history.
- Recalculate only recipes whose reagent inputs are fresh and sufficiently available.
- Check competing output listings and any documented sales evidence.
- Craft a small test quantity, if you proceed, rather than committing all capital to an unproven margin.
- Record the result separately from the original estimate so the estimate cannot be mistaken for a sale.
Common tracking mistakes and how to correct them
Using the wrong market scope
Symptom: A regional material price is compared with a realm-only output without recording where each value applies.
Fix: Add region and realm fields to every row and reject calculations that mix scopes without an explicit conversion or market reason.
Comparing stack totals
Symptom: A larger stack appears more expensive even though its unit price is lower.
Fix: Divide by units first, then compare unit price and available quantity.
Ignoring stale observations
Symptom: A price looks unusually favorable, but its lastSeen or snapshot time is old.
Fix: Mark it stale, obtain a fresh observation, and do not describe the old value as live.
Calling the cheapest listing a sale
Symptom: A recipe is labeled profitable because one listing appears at a high price.
Fix: Use a documented sales-volume or sell-through measure when available; otherwise describe the value as a listing observation and discount it for uncertainty.
Counting excluded costs as zero
Symptom: A displayed recipe margin is presented as net profit.
Fix: State that the cited recipe method excludes player time and crafting orders, then add those considerations to your own decision model if they apply.

Symptom: Missing or delayed updates are interpreted as sudden market movement.
Fix: Check the actual timestamp on each observation. The documented cadence is roughly hourly, not a promise that every hour will contain a new market snapshot.
When a recipe deserves a closer look
Advance a recipe from “screened” to “worth testing” only when all of these conditions are met:
- The item version and market scope are correct.
- Reagent prices are timestamped and quantities are sufficient for the planned craft.
- The output comparison uses the same variant and a realistic price band.
- History shows more than one isolated observation.
- The margin remains positive when you use a conservative output price.
- You understand that time, crafting orders, and unsold inventory may reduce the result.
Do not publish or rely on a universal list of “most profitable materials.” Profitability depends on region, realm, game version, recipe access, fresh item-level inputs, and actual demand. A workflow that records those variables can be reused; a static list becomes stale as soon as any of them changes.

Start with market scope, then record fresh timestamps, unit price, and quantity. Use history to identify a normal range, not to manufacture certainty. Screen recipes with the exact reagent quantities and a consistent snapshot, and treat every displayed margin as an investigation target until the output sells. The strongest decision is usually the one supported by current supply, comparable listings, and documented sales evidence—not the one with the most attractive single number.
