Playwright Test provides this workflow with toHaveScreenshot(). The key to useful results is controlling the page state and keeping baseline and comparison runs in the same browser environment.
How visual regression tracking works
A visual regression check compares a fresh rendering of a page with a reference image. A mismatch highlights a possible change in layout, typography, color, images, or other visible details. It does not by itself tell you whether the change is a defect: a reviewer must decide whether the difference is intended.
For JavaScript-heavy sites, the screenshot must represent a meaningful, settled state—not just the first frame after navigation. Choose the state you want to protect, make the test reach it consistently, and capture only then.
Choose representative routes and states
Start with pages and interactions where a visual defect would matter. A homepage screenshot alone rarely covers the states that make a dynamic site complex.

- Include important routes, such as product, account, or checkout pages that are central to the site.
- Capture meaningful interactive states: for example, an open navigation menu, a selected tab, a validation message, or a dialog.
- Keep each test focused on a state that can be reached and reproduced reliably.
- Decide whether to capture the viewport or the full page based on what the check needs to protect.
Set up Playwright screenshot comparisons
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion creates a reference screenshot the first time it runs. Later runs compare their screenshots with that baseline. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation for the assertion and snapshot workflow.

In a Node.js project, install the test runner and its browser using the documented commands:

npm init playwright@latestFollow the setup prompts to configure the project and install the browser. Keep the selected browser and its version consistent between baseline creation and comparison runs.
Write a test for a settled page state
For example, create tests/visual.spec.js:

});Replace the example URL and heading with values from your site. Waiting for a meaningful element is preferable to assuming a fixed delay is enough: it makes the intended page state explicit. For an interactive state, perform the action before the assertion, such as opening a menu and then capturing the page.

Create and review the baseline
- Run the test once with
npx playwright test. Playwright creates the reference screenshot for the assertion. - Inspect the generated image and ensure it shows the intended state before treating it as an approved reference.
- Run the test again with
npx playwright test. Subsequent runs compare the captured result against the baseline and report visual differences. - When a test fails, inspect the diff and the page state before deciding whether the application or the reference needs attention.
Keep the accepted baseline images with the project so changes remain reviewable. When a design change is intentional, use Playwright’s snapshot update workflow to refresh the reference—but only after reviewing the proposed difference.
Reduce false alarms from JavaScript and changing content
Make the capture state repeatable
JavaScript applications may render in stages, fetch data asynchronously, or animate into place. Wait for a page-specific signal that the content you care about is ready. If the test captures too early, it may compare a loading state against a finished baseline; if it waits for an unstable condition, it may time out.

Control volatile regions
Timestamps, rotating promotions, live counters, personalized content, and animated elements can change between runs even when the design has not. Playwright documents applying a stylesheet during screenshot capture to filter out content that would make comparisons nondeterministic. Use that approach selectively: hide or neutralize only the elements that are irrelevant to the visual check, rather than masking broad areas where real regressions could occur.
Keep the rendering environment consistent
Rendering can vary with the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Run baseline generation and comparisons in the same environment where possible. Otherwise, environment differences can produce image mismatches unrelated to your application.

Handle failures and maintain baselines
- The screenshot differs after an intended redesign: review the diff, confirm the new state is correct, then update the reference using Playwright’s snapshot update workflow.
- The screenshot differs but no code change explains it: check whether the run used a different browser, operating system, browser mode, or other rendering conditions than the baseline.
- The captured page is incomplete: wait for a specific page element or application state before taking the screenshot, and check that the route and any required interaction completed.
- Repeated failures occur around one area: look for volatile content or animation there. Apply a narrowly scoped capture stylesheet if that content is outside the test’s purpose.
- A baseline update would change many files: inspect the images rather than accepting them wholesale. A large diff can reflect an intended site-wide change, an environment shift, or a test that captured the wrong state.
Choose between local comparisons and hosted review
Playwright’s built-in workflow keeps screenshot assertions and baselines in the test project. Teams can also connect Playwright to hosted visual-testing services. Applitools documents Eyes checkpoints in Playwright, and Percy maintains a Playwright client library. These integrations establish available approaches, not a universal product winner or an independent comparison of their performance.
When evaluating a hosted workflow, check how it manages screenshots and baselines, how reviewers inspect and approve diffs, how it handles dynamic content, how it fits your CI process, and what operational or commercial requirements apply.
