You can track public activity tied to a U.S. government crypto address by starting with an official seizure or forfeiture record, matching any address or transaction it identifies, and checking that address on the relevant blockchain explorer. The chain shows transactions and balances—not, by itself, who controls an address or whether funds remain in government custody.
What on-chain tracking can—and cannot—show
A blockchain records activity associated with addresses. An address is not a named agency, and one wallet can manage multiple addresses. To connect an address to a government case, use evidence outside the blockchain, such as an agency announcement or court record. Treat an analytics provider’s label as that provider’s attribution, not as an official government statement.

A balance is only a snapshot at the time you check it. It does not establish legal status, current custody, or whether the funds will be transferred or disposed of. There is no official, consolidated, live U.S. government crypto-wallet inventory established by the sources cited here.
Trace a case from the official record to the blockchain
1. Choose a case or asset event
Start with a DOJ, U.S. Attorney, FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, or other agency announcement. Record the agency, publication date, case name or number, asset and network, and the legal event described. A seizure announcement, forfeiture complaint, and final forfeiture order are not interchangeable.

Forfeiture.gov can help find public federal forfeiture notices. Its search includes keywords and filters for asset type, description, seizure dates, court case number, and asset ID. The site lists pending federal forfeiture notices; it is a discovery aid, not a live ledger of everything the government holds. Use a notice to locate the relevant matter, then reconcile it with the case record.
2. Find address-level evidence
Search the official record for a wallet address, transaction hash, amount, or explanation of how investigators identified the funds. If the public record does not identify an address, do not treat a third-party label as proof of government control. State who made the attribution and what evidence supports it.
The DOJ’s 2021 DarkSide announcement illustrates a case-specific link: investigators followed Bitcoin ledger transfers to an address for which the FBI held the private key. DOJ reported seizing 63.7 bitcoin in that matter. That figure is the amount announced in the case, not a current balance or a government-wide total.

3. Check the relevant blockchain
Use a public explorer that supports the asset and network named in the record. For each check, note:
- Address or transaction hash and network
- Block and displayed time
- Amount and unit, plus whether the transaction is incoming or outgoing
- Observed balance and the timestamp of your check
These are ledger observations. They do not independently identify the address owner. Transfers through custodial services, privacy techniques, cross-chain activity, and address reuse can make a simple address lookup incomplete. In the Silk Road matter, the DOJ’s complaint described the use of a tumbler, illustrating why tracing may depend on investigative evidence beyond a public explorer.
4. Treat provider labels as leads
Analytics services may group addresses under an entity name such as “U.S. Government.” Arkham’s published entity groupings are a third-party attribution. Its 2026 holdings overview says its U.S. Government grouping includes wallets linked to federal agencies regardless of legal status. That scope is broader than a claim that every grouped asset is currently seized, finally forfeited, or in government custody.

Arkham’s 2026 estimate of approximately 325,000 BTC is its provider estimate under that definition—not an official U.S. government inventory. Attribute it to Arkham and date it if you cite it. Do not use a historical provider balance as though it were a current official figure.

5. Describe the legal stage accurately
A seizure means authorities took control under legal process; a forfeiture complaint can allege that assets should be forfeited; a final forfeiture order is a later court event. None of those terms alone establishes that an asset remains in government custody today. Check the relevant docket or agency statement before describing an asset as finally forfeited or still held.
The distinction is visible in DOJ announcements. Its 2020 Silk Road release described a civil complaint and allegations. By contrast, DOJ’s 2026 Helix announcement reported that a court entered a final order of forfeiture. The same announcement said Helix processed at least approximately 354,468 bitcoin on behalf of customers, equivalent to approximately $300 million at the time of those transactions. That is service throughput—not a figure for government holdings.

Keep a dated case ledger
A simple ledger helps preserve what you observed and where each attribution came from. Record one row per address or transaction, and update it when you check again.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Asset and network | For example, Bitcoin; name the network rather than assuming it from the token. |
| Case and agency | Case name or number, responsible agency, and official source. |
| Address or transaction | Exact identifier cited by the record or observed in the explorer. |
| Chain observation | Block/time, amount and unit, direction, and balance. |
| Attribution source | Agency/court record, explorer observation, or named analytics provider. |
| Check timestamp | Date and time you recorded the observation. |
| Legal stage and uncertainty | Seizure, pending complaint, final order, or unknown; note what remains unverified. |
| Changes since last check | Transfers observed since the previous dated entry. |
Recordkeeping limitations also matter. A DOJ Office of Inspector General review found limitations in the U.S. Marshals Service’s CATS system for recording crypto type, valuation changes, fees, and forks; staff supplemented it with spreadsheets. That finding is a reason to keep your own dated provenance clear, not evidence that any particular public address is currently held by the government.
How to compare wallet-tracking views
When two sources appear to disagree, check what each one is actually measuring before comparing totals.
- Attribution: Is the address cited in a primary agency or court record, or labeled by a provider?
- Data type: Is the view a raw explorer observation or an entity grouping created by an analytics service?
- Time and coverage: When was the balance observed, and which network or addresses are included?
- Legal meaning: Does the source describe a seizure, a final forfeiture, or merely an association?
- Aggregation: Is the figure for one address or a provider-defined entity spanning multiple addresses?
These distinctions explain why a public transaction, a provider’s attributed balance, and an official account of legally forfeited assets are not necessarily the same figure.
