How to track the International Space Station and visiting cargo spacecraft

Use NASA’s Live Space Station Tracking Map to see where the International Space Station (ISS) is now and the path it followed during the previous 90 minutes and will follow during the next 90 minutes. For a sighting from your town, use the location selector on NASA’s Spot the Station website or its optional app to get a predicted pass window and alerts. Cargo spacecraft require a different source: NASA’s ISS Visiting Vehicles page lists vehicle families and dated launch, docking, release, undocking and splashdown events, but it is not a universal live-position map for every freighter.

The distinction matters. The live map follows the orbital station itself; the visiting-vehicles page follows mission milestones for spacecraft that approach, dock with, depart from or are released by the station. The steps below show which NASA source to open, what each display means, how to plan a visual pass, and how to interpret volatile cargo schedules.

The quickest way to find the right NASA tracker

Start with the question you are trying to answer. NASA provides two complementary tools rather than one combined display.

Where is the ISS right now? NASA Live Space Station Tracking Map The station’s current position plus a plotted path 90 minutes into the past and 90 minutes into the future. The plotted track changes continuously and does not by itself promise that the station will be visible from your location.
When can I see it from my location? NASA’s Spot the Station website or app Location-specific flyover opportunities, with date, time, duration and visibility conditions; optional notifications can be enabled in the app. A prediction is an opportunity, not a guarantee. Clouds, daylight, haze or an obstructed horizon can prevent a sighting.
What is a cargo spacecraft doing? NASA ISS Visiting Vehicles Vehicle types and dated launch, approach, capture or docking, undocking, release and splashdown milestones. The reviewed NASA material does not establish one public, real-time tracker that covers every cargo vehicle throughout its flight.

If you only want to watch the station pass overhead, the first two rows are sufficient. If you are following a resupply mission, use the third row and read each date as a mission event, not as a continuously updated spacecraft coordinate.

See the ISS’s current position and near-term path

Open the live map

  1. Open NASA’s Live Space Station Tracking Map.
  2. Read the marker showing the station’s current location. The map also draws where the station was during the preceding 90 minutes and where its orbit is expected to carry it during the following 90 minutes.
  3. Use the map’s dark overlay as a day-and-night reference. It indicates the portion of Earth in nighttime; it is not a promise that the station is visible at every point inside that shadow.
  4. Check the map at the time you intend to observe. Because the station is moving continuously, a screenshot or an old browser tab can be out of date.

NASA describes the display as a live/current position map, not as an observing forecast for every person on Earth. A track crossing your region only tells you that the orbit passes nearby. You still need a local pass prediction to know whether the station will be above your horizon during darkness and whether sunlight will illuminate it.

What the 90-minute span means

The “90 minutes before and 90 minutes ahead” range is the time span drawn by this map, not a measurement of prediction accuracy or a guarantee of visibility. It gives enough context to see the station’s recent movement and its immediate orbital future. For a pass several days away, use the location-specific schedule instead of extrapolating the line on the map.

Plan a visible pass over your location

Use the website or app

  1. Open NASA’s Spot the Station page, or install the optional Spot the Station app described in NASA’s frequently asked questions.
  2. Choose your city or another nearby location in the location selector. NASA says its service calculates opportunities for more than 6,700 locations worldwide; confirm that the location count is still displayed on the live page because site coverage can change.
  3. Review each listed opportunity’s date, start time, duration and visibility information. The app adds a real-time map and can send alerts for the selected location.
  4. Set an alert only after confirming the location and time zone shown by the service. An alert tells you when a calculated opportunity is approaching; it does not check your local cloud cover.
  5. On the day, check an independent local weather forecast and look at the sky before going outside. NASA’s schedule cannot account for a building, trees, haze or clouds blocking your view.

The app is optional. NASA also provides the website, so you do not need a phone installation to obtain a pass time or use the map.

Choose the right time of day

NASA says the most favorable opportunities occur within a few hours before sunrise or after sunset. At those times the station can still be in sunlight high above Earth while your sky is dark enough for the moving object to stand out. A daytime pass may occur geometrically but is normally difficult or impossible to see against a bright sky.

Know what you are looking for

NASA describes the station as resembling an airplane or a very bright star moving across the night sky, except that it has no flashing lights and does not change direction. It should move steadily. A blinking object that turns or changes speed is more likely to be an aircraft or another object than the ISS.

Spot the Station is designed to support naked-eye observing. Binoculars can be a personal enhancement, but NASA does not require binoculars or a telescope to find a predicted pass. Optical equipment does not fix poor weather or an incorrect time.

Why the ISS location changes so quickly

Orbit and speed

NASA states that the ISS completes 16 orbits of Earth each day and travels at about 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 kilometers per hour). Those figures explain why a pass is short, why the marker moves noticeably on a live display, and why a small timing error can put the station in a different part of the sky.

Who produces the trajectory data

NASA says flight controllers in the International Space Station Mission Control Center at Johnson Space Center in Houston generate the station’s trajectory data as it passes over Earth. Controllers monitor the station’s location and course and assess potential collision risks. The public map is therefore based on operational trajectory information, but it remains a continuously changing display rather than a permanent timetable.

Use the latest map or pass listing immediately before observing. A schedule generated earlier can change when the station performs a maneuver, when tracking data are updated or when a website revises a prediction.

Track visiting cargo spacecraft with NASA’s mission chronology

What the visiting-vehicles page covers

Resupply spacecraft bring equipment, experiments, food and other cargo to the station. NASA’s ISS Visiting Vehicles page identifies the vehicle families and records dated mission events. Depending on the spacecraft, an entry can cover launch, rendezvous, robotic capture or docking, time attached to the station, undocking or release, and disposal or splashdown.

That page is the appropriate official starting point for cargo status, but it is an event chronology. It should not be presented as a live map that shows the position of every freighter between launch and arrival. NASA’s public pages reviewed for this guide do not establish a single tracker with that universal coverage.

Vehicle families and providers NASA identifies

Provider or agency Vehicle name found in NASA material How to interpret it
Roscosmos Progress Russian cargo spacecraft used for station resupply; NASA’s chronology lists launch, docking and departure milestones.
SpaceX Dragon Cargo Dragon missions deliver supplies and experiments and later depart for a controlled return.
Northrop Grumman Cygnus Cygnus freighters are captured or released as mission events and are later disposed of according to the mission plan.
JAXA HTV and HTV-X Japanese resupply spacecraft family recorded in NASA’s visiting-vehicle history and event listings.
European Space Agency Automated Transfer Vehicle (former program) A European cargo system included in the station’s historical visiting-vehicle record; it is not a current routine vehicle.

NASA identifies ESA, JAXA, Roscosmos, Northrop Grumman and SpaceX as organizations that have launched station resupply freighters. Vehicle names and mission labels can differ between programs, so use the exact name shown in the current NASA event entry when searching for an update.

Read dates as milestones, not as a live coordinate

Mission pages commonly separate a launch date from arrival, capture or docking, then list undocking, release and splashdown. A date can be planned, targeted, delayed or already completed. Look for wording that indicates status and for a timestamp or update date; do not turn a planned event into a claim that it happened.

The NASA page snapshot used for this guide listed a Cygnus NG-24 release on October 9, 2026, and also displayed 2026 events for SpaceX CRS missions and Progress vehicles. Because October 9 is a dated entry rather than a timeless status—and is already in the past relative to this October 2026 publication—check the current NASA page and station updates to determine whether the event occurred as listed or was revised. The station’s configuration shown in NASA’s overview is likewise a dated snapshot, not a guarantee that the same vehicles remain attached today.

A reliable workflow for following one cargo mission

  1. Identify the spacecraft. Start with the vehicle name in NASA’s visiting-vehicles list: Progress, Dragon, Cygnus, HTV or HTV-X. Avoid treating “cargo ship” as a unique vehicle; several systems serve the station.
  2. Find the relevant event. Decide whether you care about launch, approach, capture, docking, undocking, release or splashdown. The same mission can have several dates, and each answers a different question.
  3. Classify the status. Mark the entry as planned, targeted, completed or revised only when NASA’s wording supports that label. A listed date without a completion statement is not proof that the event has happened.
  4. Check for the latest NASA update. Reopen the visiting-vehicles page and related station updates close to the event. Cargo schedules and station configurations can change, so an old calendar reminder is not authoritative.
  5. Use the ISS map for the station, not the freighter. The live Spot the Station map tells you where the orbital complex is. It does not automatically identify a Dragon, Cygnus or Progress vehicle flying separately before rendezvous or after release.
  6. After docking or capture, follow the station’s status. Once a spacecraft is attached, NASA’s event chronology is the clearest public record of its mission phase. When it undocks or is released, return to the event page for the next milestone rather than assuming the ISS map follows the departing craft.

Station tracking and cargo tracking are different jobs

Question ISS live map Visiting-vehicles chronology
Where is the station now? Yes. The map plots the station’s current position and a 90-minute historical/future track. No. It is not a real-time coordinate display.
Can I plan a naked-eye sighting? Indirectly. Use the map for context, then use Spot the Station’s local pass schedule. No. Cargo event dates do not provide a local ISS-style flyover prediction.
When will a freighter dock or leave? No. The station marker does not identify individual visiting vehicles. Yes. NASA lists dated launch, docking, release, undocking and splashdown milestones.
Does it follow a freighter after release? No, unless the object is the station itself; the map is specifically for the ISS. It records the mission event, but the reviewed public material does not supply one universal live track for every released vehicle.

Troubleshoot common tracking problems

The map loads, but the station seems to be in the wrong place

Confirm that you are looking at the current NASA page rather than a saved image or an old browser tab. Check the map’s time context and remember that the marker moves at orbital speed. For a local observation, switch to the location-specific schedule instead of estimating a pass from the world map.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app shows no convenient pass

Try a nearby location in the selector and review a wider date range. A location can have no favorable opportunity during the days you first checked, or the service may classify a pass as having poor visibility conditions. Do not substitute a pass listed for another city without accounting for the difference in horizon and local time.

An alert fired but the ISS was invisible

Check cloud cover, haze and obstructions first. NASA’s alert describes a calculated date, time, duration and visibility opportunity; it cannot guarantee clear skies or an unobstructed view. Also verify that your device uses the intended location and time zone.

The station looked like an aircraft

Compare the object’s behavior with NASA’s description: the ISS moves steadily, shines like a bright star or airplane and does not flash or change direction. Aircraft commonly blink or turn. If the sighting does not match that pattern, do not label it the ISS solely because an alert was active.

A cargo date appears to be outdated

Open the current NASA visiting-vehicles page and look for a newer status or revised date. Treat the original entry as a historical or planned milestone until NASA confirms what happened. This is especially important around launch, docking and release, when schedules can move.

What you do—and do not—need

You need an internet connection to consult NASA’s live map or current event pages and a selected location for a local pass forecast. You do not need specialist optics, a paid tracking service or a physical model to obtain the station’s position or cargo mission status. NASA’s instructions are aimed at finding naked-eye opportunities; binoculars may make a personal observation more comfortable, but they do not replace the official time and location data.

For the ISS, the dependable sequence is: check the live map, select your location, read the pass details, verify the weather, and look during the recommended dawn-or-dusk window. For a cargo spacecraft, identify the vehicle, read the dated mission milestone, classify it as planned or completed, and recheck NASA close to the event. Keeping those workflows separate prevents the most common error—mistaking a station position display for a live tracker of every spacecraft that visits it.
