Track each business trip as it happens, keep records of your income and expenses, and separate business driving from personal use. For 2026 federal taxes, the standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per business mile from January 1 through June 30, and 76 cents per business mile from July 1 through December 31. The rate changed midyear, so calculate the two periods separately.
What to record for every rideshare business trip
Maintain a contemporaneous, trip-level log. The IRS accepts formats such as a paper logbook, spreadsheet, digital log, diary, or trip sheet if the records substantiate the deduction. Enter trips regularly; weekly entries can be considered timely under IRS guidance.

- Date: Record when the business driving occurred.
- Destination or area: Note where you drove, using enough detail to identify the trip.
- Business purpose: Explain why the drive was business-related.
- Distance: Record miles driven or the odometer reading at the start and end.
- Vehicle totals: Track total annual miles as well as business miles.
- Separate costs: Log parking and tolls separately, and save receipts or transaction records.
The IRS provides a sample mileage and expense log with fields for date, destination, business purpose, odometer readings, miles, expense type, and amount in Publication 463. A mileage logbook is one convenient option, not a required or IRS-endorsed product; a spreadsheet or digital record can also work.
A practical logging routine
- At the start of a shift or business-use period, record the date and odometer reading.
- For each business trip, enter the destination or area, business purpose, and miles or start and stop readings.
- Record qualifying parking and tolls separately and retain supporting records.
- Update the log regularly, rather than waiting until tax time.
- At year end, total business miles and all vehicle miles for the year.
Do not fill gaps with guesses. IRS Publication 463 states: “You can’t deduct amounts that you approximate or estimate.” A late reconstruction is weaker evidence than a timely record.

Which rideshare miles may count?
Only substantiated business use belongs in the business-mile calculation. The IRS generally treats driving between home and a main or regular workplace as personal commuting, and parking at a regular workplace is generally a commuting cost. Apply those general rules carefully: rideshare situations such as driving between passenger trips, repositioning, or driving while waiting can depend on the facts. The available general IRS guidance does not establish a universal rule that every mile with an app on is deductible.
Record the trip and its purpose, then assess whether it qualifies as business use under the applicable rules. Do not assume that a cost is deductible merely because it occurred while you were driving for the platform.

Standard mileage or actual vehicle expenses?
These are alternative ways to calculate vehicle costs. Compare them using complete records and check the method-choice rules before filing; a choice in the first year or a lease can affect later years.

For 2026, apply 72.5 cents per business mile driven from January 1 through June 30, and 76 cents per business mile driven from July 1 through December 31. Do not use one rate for all 2026 miles. The IRS revised the rate effective July 1, 2026, following recent increases in fuel prices. See the IRS standard mileage rates and Announcement 2026-11.

Avoid double-counting costs
If you use the standard mileage rate, do not also deduct actual operating costs represented by that rate, such as fuel or repairs. Qualifying business parking and tolls can generally be added separately, but parking at a regular workplace is generally a personal commuting expense. If you use actual expenses, allocate mixed business and personal costs and keep records that support the business share.
Keep income records as well as expense records
Save rideshare platform statements, payment records, and any tax forms you receive. The IRS says: “You must report all income on your tax return, even if you don’t receive Forms 1099 from the businesses that pay you.” See the IRS Manage taxes for your gig work guidance.
Rank #4
For gig work, the IRS generally requires a tax return when net self-employment earnings are at least $400. Independent contractors may also need to make estimated tax payments. Check the IRS rules for your circumstances rather than relying only on whether a platform issues an information return.
How long to keep your records
Keep your mileage log, receipts, platform statements, and supporting tax records together. IRS Publication 463 gives three years from filing as the general period for records supporting a deduction or income item. Vehicle business-use records may be needed for each year in the vehicle’s recovery period, so the general three-year period may not cover every vehicle-related record. Consult Publication 463 for the applicable retention rules.

Federal tax scope
This guidance concerns US federal taxes for rideshare drivers, particularly self-employed or independent-contractor drivers. State and local tax rules can differ, and whether a particular trip or cost qualifies depends on the facts. For a complex vehicle-use or method-choice situation, consult a qualified tax professional.
