Keep one labeled record for each Shiny hunt, and update it whenever you pause, stop, or switch targets. At minimum, record the Pokémon, game, hunting method, and current count; track time separately if you want to measure active hunting time. This keeps a tally meaningful after a long session instead of leaving you with a number whose target or counting rule is unclear.
Set up a hunt record before you start
Create a separate entry for each target. Include the Pokémon, game, method, starting count, and date. Decide what one increment means—such as one completed reset, encounter, or egg—and keep that rule consistent for the whole hunt. If game settings or your method affect what you count, note them too.

Track time as a separate field. If you want to know how long you actively hunted, pause the timer when you step away. If you leave it running, label the result as elapsed session time rather than active play time.
Use a checkpoint routine for long sessions
- Start: Open a new hunt entry and note the target, game, method, date, and starting count.
- Count consistently: Add one for each completed action under the rule you chose. Avoid changing between counting encounters and resets midway through a hunt.
- Pause: When you take a break or stop playing, save the current total and the time figure, with a note about whether the timer measures active or elapsed time.
- Resume: Check the saved entry before continuing, then pick up from its recorded count.
- Switch hunts: Create or reopen the entry for the new target rather than reusing an unlabeled counter.
If you use a separate clicker, reconcile it with the written or digital record at each break. A physical tally counter can be convenient during play, but the number needs a durable note that connects it to the target, game, and method. A recent community discussion excerpt mentions pairing a physical counter with an app or website; the discussion itself was unavailable, so this is not evidence about how common that approach is.

If the hunt history matters to you, keep a backup note or export when the tracker provides one. The services below do not all document backup or export behavior, so check the option you choose rather than assuming your history is recoverable.
Choose a tracker that fits your device and habits
Trackers differ in whether you enter counts manually, use automatic counting, record time, support multiple hunts, or keep a history. Check those details—and the platform requirements—before moving a long-running hunt into a new tool.

| Option | Documented features | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| ShinyDex | Tracks encounters, time, or both; its catch records include game, method, encounter count, and date. Its homepage identifies automatic desktop counting as a Pro feature. | Automatic counting is tied to its desktop app and Pro tier, according to the site. Confirm the setup and paid-feature boundary suit your workflow. |
| PokeShine for Android | The Google Play description says it tracks Pokémon seen and search time, supports multi-hunt route sprites, and records found Pokémon. The listing reports an update on April 25, 2026. | Check that the app’s odds information matches your game and method. The listing is developer-provided; an individual review reporting lost hunts is anecdotal, not a measure of failure frequency. |
| Shiny Pokes | Documents encounter counters, timers, simultaneous hunts, phases or chains, and autosave and pause behavior when stepping away. The site specifies iPhone support with iOS 17 or newer. | Confirm the iPhone requirement fits your device, and review its counting controls and privacy or public-profile options. Autosave is a vendor claim, not an independently tested reliability result. |
| ShinyHunt / Poketch | Poketch says ShinyHunt tracks hunt time, encounters, collection, and Pokédex completion. Its older PokétchApp is no longer being updated. | Check current app support, device compatibility, account continuity, and which features are available in the version you plan to use. |
| Handheld tally counter plus a note | Offers a tactile way to increment a count without entering it directly in an app. | Copy the tally into a labeled record at breaks. The clicker alone does not retain the target, game, method, or time. |
| Pokémon HOME | The official page describes a mobile Catch Calendar that arranges caught Pokémon by date and a Pokédex for Pokémon deposited in HOME. | This helps organize caught Pokémon; the official feature page does not describe a live Shiny-hunt encounter counter. Feature availability may vary. |
Keep odds and counters in perspective
A tracker’s odds display is conditional information, not a deadline or promise. Odds depend on the game, method, and relevant modifiers; the product descriptions above do not establish an authoritative current rate for every combination. Do not treat a particular count as a threshold at which a Shiny is guaranteed.
What a hunt log should tell you later
When you return after a break—or look back weeks later—you should be able to answer four questions without guessing: which Pokémon you were hunting, in which game, by what method, and what the count represents. Add the date and a clearly labeled time figure if you want to understand when and how long you played. That context is what makes a saved number useful.
