The safest way to avoid losing a Pokémon GO event reward is to check Today View every time you open the game, then open its Events section and read the event’s own deadline. From the map, tap the binoculars icon in the lower-right corner. Today shows which events are live and how long they last; Events can contain active Timed Research, Collection Challenges, Global Challenge progress, timed bonuses and other event-specific tracking.
Complete every listed task and claim its reward before the stated cutoff. Timed Research disappears when its availability period ends, while Special Research remains available until you finish it. Event requirements, rewards and end times vary, so the in-game listing and its linked official announcement are more reliable than a general assumption about when an event ends.

Open Today View before you start playing
Today View is Pokémon GO’s event dashboard. It is the first place to look when you want to know what is active, what is expiring and where event-related progress is being tracked.
Finding the dashboard
- Launch Pokémon GO and wait until the Map View is visible.
- Tap the binoculars icon at the bottom right of the screen.
- Read the Today section before beginning tasks or spending items.
Niantic describes Today as a place for current information, including live events, their duration and links to related announcements. The display changes with the event schedule: sections can appear, move or disappear as an event starts or ends. If you do not see a particular panel, treat that as a reason to verify the event’s announcement, not as proof that no event is running.

Make the Today check part of your normal launch routine. It takes only a few seconds and can reveal a deadline that is much closer than you expected, a bonus worth using immediately or a requirement you need to satisfy before research is granted.
Use Events to find the work that actually expires
Inside Today View, open Events. This is where active event-tracking features are grouped when they are available for the current event.
What Events may contain
- Timed Research: tasks with a fixed availability period.
- Collection Challenges: event collections that may require catching or evolving specified Pokémon.
- Global Challenges: shared progress displays that appear during certain special events.
- Timed bonuses: temporary effects or bonuses tied to an event.
- Progress information: counters, milestones or links to event details.
Not every event uses every section. A quiet Events panel does not establish that an event is absent; some event information may be presented in a linked announcement, in another Today panel or through a separate in-game prompt. Check the current event listing and the announcement attached to it.
Read the event card, not just the headline
Open the individual event card and look for the stated dates, time zone or countdown, task requirements and reward conditions. Pokémon GO does not use one universal end time for every Timed Research series. The specific event listing is the authority for that event’s cutoff.
If the card links to an announcement, open it and confirm details such as eligibility, paid or ticketed access, geographic limits, required check-ins and whether a bonus applies only during certain hours. Keep the event card open while planning your play session so you do not confuse the event’s overall end with a shorter research or bonus window.
Understand which research types persist
Research categories behave differently. Knowing the category prevents the common mistake of assuming every unfinished task will wait for you.
| Research type | How it is obtained | Availability and progress behavior | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Timed Research | Granted for a specified event or promotion | Available only for the stated period, then disappears | Event card deadline, task completion and reward claiming |
| Special Research | Granted through storylines, announcements or qualifying actions | Remains available until completed | Task steps and any individual conditions |
| Field Research | Collected from PokéStops or automatically granted during specified periods | Separate task type; it can carry an event label | PokéStop source, task wording and any event-specific expiry |
The key distinction is persistence. Niantic’s research-type guidance says Timed Research disappears after its specified period, whereas Special Research remains until you complete it. Do not transfer the persistence rules of one category to another.

A reliable routine for every event
The following routine turns the game’s scattered event information into a repeatable deadline-management process.
1. Record the first and last check
When an event appears, open Today and Events immediately. Note the event name, the displayed end time and any separate deadline written in the task description. If an event spans several days, schedule another check near the start of each play session rather than relying on memory.
2. Separate event goals from expiring research
Make two mental lists: activities that merely benefit from an event bonus and tasks that vanish at the cutoff. Timed Research, Collection Challenges and event bonuses may have different completion windows. Prioritize the item with the earliest stated deadline.
3. Read every task before spending resources
Open the research entry and review all visible steps. Look for catches, evolutions, throws, raids, buddy actions, trades, distance requirements or location restrictions. This lets you identify tasks that require daylight, a nearby raid, a particular weather condition or another player.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →4. Work from the most constrained task
If one step depends on a raid hour, a local meetup or a limited spawn, do that step first. Flexible tasks such as catching a number of Pokémon can usually be finished later. Planning around the least flexible requirement reduces the risk of reaching the final hours with an impossible step remaining.
5. Reopen the entry after every milestone
When a task is complete, open the research page and confirm that the progress counter changed. Some rewards require a separate tap to claim. A completed condition that has not been claimed is still something you should treat as unfinished until the reward animation or updated task state confirms it.
6. Claim before the countdown reaches zero
Do not wait for the final minute. Network delays, an app restart or a device clock problem can leave too little time to submit the final action. Finish and claim all available rewards while the research is visibly active.

7. Verify the result
After claiming the last reward, reopen Today View and Events. Confirm that the research is marked complete or no longer listed as an active task. Take a screenshot of an unusual reward or a successful check-in if you might need to report a technical problem later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDeadlines, time zones and linked announcements
The phrase “ends on” can refer to more than one thing. An event may have an overall schedule, while a Timed Research track, bonus, ticket benefit or meetup reward has its own window. Use the exact time shown in the active listing and its linked announcement.
Why a general end-time rule is unsafe
Niantic’s Today View documentation explains where duration information appears, but it does not set one universal cutoff for every event. A community event, seasonal storyline and global event can use different schedules. Even two research tracks in the same event can have different requirements.
What to write down
- The event’s start and end date and the displayed time zone.
- The Timed Research availability period, if it differs from the event schedule.
- Any “claim by” instruction for a reward or bonus.
- Eligibility rules such as location, ticket ownership, RSVP or check-in.
- Whether the reward can be received once, once per day or more than once.
If the game and an older announcement appear to disagree, follow the current in-game listing and check for a newer official update. Schedules and rewards are event-specific and can change.
Meetup Check-in Timed Research: an extra-gate example
Some Timed Research is not granted merely by opening the Events panel. Niantic’s meetup example shows why you must read the event’s access instructions before assuming a missing task is a bug.
Requirements for the meetup research described by Niantic
- Find an eligible Community Ambassador meetup with a Rewards icon.
- RSVP to that meetup.
- Attend the location and complete the in-game check-in.
- Wait for the successful check-in notification.
- Claim the initial 500 XP within one hour of checking in.
- Restart Pokémon GO and look in the Timed Research tab for the full research.
Those conditions apply to the meetup research described on Niantic’s Meetup Check-in Timed Research help page. They are not universal rules for every Timed Research event. The page also states that this meetup research can be received once per day, which is a limit for that specific offering.
Where to confirm the current meetup details
Use the event calendar’s Happening Now information for the current meetup, eligibility and reward description. A meetup can be listed without qualifying for this research if it lacks the required event type or Rewards icon.

Why isn’t my Timed Research showing up?
For the meetup check-in example, follow this order before contacting support. It checks the access gate, the one-hour claim condition and the app state in the order most likely to explain the missing entry.
- Confirm eligibility. Verify that the meetup is an eligible Community Ambassador event and shows the Rewards icon.
- Confirm the RSVP. Check that you RSVP’d to the correct meetup, not merely viewed its listing.
- Confirm the check-in. Attend the location and look for the successful check-in notification.
- Claim the initial XP. Claim the 500 XP within one hour of the successful check-in. Missing that window can prevent the full research from being issued.
- Restart the app. Fully close Pokémon GO, reopen it and allow the map to load.
- Open the correct tab. Return to the binoculars icon, open Today, then check the Timed Research entry.
- Check the daily limit. The meetup research described by Niantic can be received once per day; a previous successful grant may explain why another one is not appearing.
- Submit an in-game support ticket. If all requirements are satisfied and the research still does not appear, use Pokémon GO’s in-game support flow as Niantic advises.
Do not apply the meetup diagnosis to every event. For ordinary Timed Research, first reread the event’s own eligibility and availability text. Some research is automatically granted, while other tracks require a ticket, a purchase, a location, a check-in or another qualifying action.

How to avoid losing an unclaimed reward
Timed Research has two practical failure points: an incomplete condition and a completed condition whose reward was never claimed. Treat both as urgent.
Use a “claim immediately” rule
When a task turns complete, claim it during the same play session. This avoids forgetting a finished step and prevents a last-minute attempt to process several reward screens at once. If a reward opens an encounter, complete the encounter before leaving the research page whenever possible.
Do not assume the task will convert to Special Research
Timed Research does not become permanent because you started it. Niantic’s research-type guidance says it disappears after the specified period. Special Research is the category that remains until completion; a Timed Research deadline still applies even when the first task is already checked off.
Leave a safety margin
Finish several hours before the displayed cutoff when the task requires travel, a raid group, a meetup or a large number of catches. A poor connection, maintenance, GPS drift or a failed raid can consume the final minutes. The game’s countdown is a boundary, not a recommendation to wait.

Best Value
Assuming an empty section means no event
Event panels depend on what is active. Check the event listing and linked announcement when a section is absent.
Using the event’s overall end time for every reward
Read each research or bonus description. A component can have a shorter window than the headline event.
Confusing Field Research with Timed Research
Field Research comes from PokéStops or specified automatic grants and can be event-labeled. Timed Research is a separate, deadline-based category. Open the task details before deciding how urgently it must be completed.
Waiting for a missing task without checking access conditions
For meetup research, RSVP, eligible event type, successful check-in and the one-hour XP claim are all part of the grant process. Complete those checks before restarting or filing a ticket.
Assuming all event rewards repeat
Some offerings have daily or one-time limits. The meetup research example is limited to once per day. Use the current event text for the applicable limit.
A compact pre-expiry checklist
- Tap the binoculars icon from Map View.
- Read Today for the live event and duration.
- Open Events and identify every active Timed Research or Collection Challenge.
- Open each item and record its specific deadline and eligibility requirements.
- Separate Timed Research from Special Research and Field Research.
- Complete constrained tasks first.
- Claim each reward as soon as its task becomes complete.
- Return to Events and verify completion before the cutoff.
- For meetup research, confirm the Rewards icon, RSVP, successful check-in and 500 XP claim within one hour.
- If qualifying meetup research is still missing, restart the app and submit an in-game support ticket.
Official references for changing event details
Use these Niantic help pages for the mechanics described here, then rely on the current in-game event card for dates, rewards and eligibility:
- The Today View explains the binoculars entry point, Today information and the Events section.
- Types of Research distinguishes Timed, Special and Field Research and explains their availability behavior.
- Meetup Check-in Timed Research lists the meetup-specific eligibility, XP claim window, daily limit and troubleshooting path.
The practical rule to remember
Every time you play during an event, start with Today View, open Events, read the task’s own deadline and claim completed rewards immediately. Timed Research is temporary by design; Special Research is the category that waits. When a task depends on an RSVP, check-in, one-hour XP claim or daily limit, satisfy that condition exactly as written and use in-game support if the qualifying research still fails to appear.
