How to track oil prices and energy-market news without constant alerts

You can follow oil prices quietly with one saved dashboard, then add only the news feed or release email that answers a real question. Start with the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) petroleum spot-price dashboard for daily Cushing, Oklahoma WTI and Europe Brent series. Add an EIA RSS feed for broader energy news, or petroleum-release emails if you need publication notices. Use exchange-oriented pages and alerts only when you need futures benchmarks, intraday frequencies or watchlists.

This setup separates three different things that are often mixed together: a daily spot-price series, exchange-market data and general energy news. Keeping them separate prevents a stream of trading notifications from taking over a routine that only requires a periodic check.

Decide what you actually need to follow

“Oil prices” can refer to several related but non-interchangeable data sets. Choosing the object first is the simplest way to reduce noise.

Daily spot prices

A spot price describes the value associated with physical oil at a particular location and time. EIA’s petroleum spot-price dashboard includes daily series for Cushing, Oklahoma WTI and Europe Brent. Those series are suited to a reader who wants a dependable reference for the broad direction of crude prices rather than a stream of every market move.

The dashboard is dynamic: the latest date and values change as EIA publishes new observations. A saved bookmark is therefore more useful than copying a number into a note. When you open it, check the date attached to the observation before comparing it with an older figure.

Exchange and futures-market information

Exchange pages cover contracts and market products rather than only a daily physical-market reference. CME Group’s energy-market pages include WTI, Brent, Henry Hub natural gas and RBOB gasoline. They describe several possible data frequencies: real-time, delayed, end-of-day and historical.

These categories answer different questions. Real-time data is intended for someone watching a market while it moves. Delayed data can be adequate when immediate execution is irrelevant. End-of-day data supports a daily review, while historical data helps with longer comparisons. The page does not establish that every quote is available in every frequency or under identical terms, so treat the labels as a menu of possible data types, not a promise about a particular symbol.

Energy-market news and release notices

News explains developments that may affect prices: policy changes, production decisions, inventories, weather or infrastructure events. EIA provides RSS feeds for items such as Today in Energy, What’s New, press releases, and gasoline and diesel updates. It also maintains an information-releases page with email updates related to petroleum data announcements.

News and release notices are not substitutes for a price series. A headline can arrive before a daily spot observation, after it, or have no immediate price effect. Keeping a news feed separate from the dashboard lets you read context when you want it without treating every headline as a signal to act.

Set up a calm baseline with the EIA dashboard

Most readers can begin with a dashboard-only routine. It gives you a consistent reference while avoiding push notifications.

  1. Open EIA’s petroleum spot-price dashboard. Locate the daily Cushing, Oklahoma WTI and Europe Brent series. Confirm that the chart or table is showing the series and date you intend to follow.
  2. Save the page. Add a browser bookmark, a home-screen shortcut or a folder named “Energy check.” Do not rely on a search result that may change position or wording.
  3. Choose a review interval. Once per day is reasonable for a reader who wants a current reference; a weekly check can be enough for a long-term household or business budget. These are practical choices, not a published requirement.
  4. Record the observation date. If you copy a value into a spreadsheet or note, include the date and whether it is WTI or Brent. This prevents an older WTI observation from being compared accidentally with a newer Brent observation.
  5. Keep the dashboard passive. Disable browser notifications for the page if your browser offers them. The value of this setup is that you decide when to look.

Read the two series without conflating them

Cushing WTI and Europe Brent are different benchmarks with different locations and market contexts. They can move in the same broad direction, but they are not the same contract or delivery point. Use the same benchmark consistently when you are tracking a trend. If you compare them, label both series explicitly rather than describing one as “the oil price.”

Use dates before drawing conclusions

A daily series is an observation, not a continuously updated quote. A value may reflect the latest published day while news headlines are arriving today. When a headline seems inconsistent with the dashboard, first check the observation date and publication timing. The mismatch may be timing rather than an error.

Add one RSS feed only when you have a defined question

RSS is a low-friction way to receive new EIA content without subscribing to every alert the organization offers. EIA’s RSS guidance explains that an RSS reader or another application can notify subscribers when a feed publishes new material. The reader application controls how often it checks and whether it shows banners, sounds or push messages.

Choose the feed that matches your interest

  • Today in Energy: choose this when you want EIA’s explanatory energy articles and market context.
  • What’s New: choose this when your priority is changes to EIA products, data or site content.
  • Press releases: choose this when official announcements matter more than routine commentary.
  • Gasoline and diesel updates: choose this when transportation-fuel prices are more relevant to you than crude alone.

These categories are examples of the feeds EIA lists; feed contents and availability can change. Start with one. Add a second only after you can name the separate decision or question it supports.

Subscribe without creating an alert storm

  1. Open your RSS reader. Use the reader you already check, whether it is a browser-based service, a mail application or a desktop/mobile app.
  2. Add the EIA feed. Paste the feed address supplied by EIA into the reader’s “Add subscription” or equivalent field.
  3. Set delivery to digest or manual review. If the application supports a daily digest, scheduled summary or unread-only view, select that instead of an instant push for every item.
  4. Turn off unrelated notifications. Keep the feed available in the reader while disabling lock-screen banners, sounds and badges that are not useful to you.
  5. Review and prune. After a week or two, remove items that never help you answer your original question. The aim is a small, readable queue.

An RSS subscription does not itself guarantee a particular notification behavior. The application you choose determines whether you receive immediate alerts, periodic summaries or no push message at all.

Use petroleum-release email for scheduled data notices

If your interest is the timing of official petroleum data rather than general energy articles, EIA’s information-releases page offers email updates related to petroleum data announcements. This is a different channel from an RSS feed: it is designed for release notices and arrives in the email account you provide.

Know the Weekly Petroleum Status Report timing

EIA lists the Weekly Petroleum Status Report as usually released on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time. “Usually” matters: holiday schedules and other changes can shift the release. Treat the stated time as a planning reference, not a guarantee that a report will appear at exactly that minute every week.

Make release email easy to ignore until needed

  1. Subscribe only to the petroleum notice category. Do not select every EIA email list unless you genuinely need each subject.
  2. Create an email label or folder. A rule that moves the notices out of the primary inbox keeps them available without making every release look urgent.
  3. Disable mail-app push for that folder. You can still read the message during your chosen review window.
  4. Check the schedule around holidays. If a Wednesday release is important for a meeting or report, verify the current EIA schedule rather than assuming the normal time applies.

Use the email channel when the release itself matters. If you only need to see where prices stand, the saved dashboard is less intrusive.

When exchange-level pages and alerts add value

CME Group’s energy-market pages are useful for readers who need more detail than a daily government spot-price series provides. The pages cover WTI, Brent, Henry Hub natural gas and RBOB gasoline, and describe real-time, delayed, end-of-day and historical data options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose an exchange-oriented view for a specific reason

  • Intraday monitoring: consider it when changes during the trading session matter to your work or risk decisions.
  • Contract-specific context: use it when you need to examine an exchange product rather than a general spot benchmark.
  • Natural gas or gasoline: use the broader energy pages when your concern is Henry Hub gas or RBOB gasoline instead of crude oil.
  • Historical comparisons: use historical data when you are studying a period rather than checking today’s reference price.

None of these needs makes real-time quotes necessary for everyone. A household budgeting for fuel, a student following energy policy or a writer preparing a weekly briefing may be well served by daily EIA data and one carefully selected news feed.

Optional account features

CME describes account features including market alerts, product watchlists and reports. Those tools can be appropriate when you follow several products or need a saved list of specific markets. They are trading-oriented conveniences, not prerequisites for understanding daily oil prices.

The available terms, access conditions and costs can differ by product and data frequency. The public descriptions establish the frequency categories and account features, but they do not establish a universal price or identical access rule for every CME data offering. Check the details for the exact product before relying on it.

Compare the sources before adding another subscription

Source or channel Data type Typical cadence or frequency Delivery method Account or trading tools
EIA petroleum spot-price dashboard Government daily spot-price series, including Cushing WTI and Europe Brent Daily observations; latest dates and values change as EIA updates the dashboard Open dashboard or saved bookmark No exchange watchlist is needed for the basic check
EIA RSS feeds Energy articles, new products, press releases and selected gasoline or diesel updates When a subscribed feed publishes new content RSS reader or compatible application Reader settings determine whether notifications are pushed, digested or kept manual
EIA petroleum-release email Notices about petroleum data announcements Release-based; the Weekly Petroleum Status Report is usually Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time, subject to schedule changes Email inbox, folder or label No exchange watchlist is required
CME energy-market pages Exchange-market information for WTI, Brent, Henry Hub natural gas and RBOB gasoline Real-time, delayed, end-of-day and historical categories are described; availability varies by product Market pages and associated account tools Account features include alerts, watchlists and reports; terms are product-specific

This comparison is why a single “oil alert” is usually a poor default. The dashboard, RSS feed, email notice and exchange page serve different jobs. Pick the least intensive channel that answers your question.

Build a low-interruption review routine

For a household or casual reader

Bookmark the EIA dashboard and open it once a week. Follow no RSS feed unless a particular topic, such as gasoline updates, affects a decision you are making. This routine gives you a dated reference without turning ordinary market movement into a daily task.

For a writer, student or analyst

Use the dashboard for the benchmark series, subscribe to Today in Energy or another clearly relevant EIA feed, and review the RSS queue at a set time. Add the petroleum-release email if your work depends on knowing when official data announcements arrive. Keep notes that identify the benchmark, observation date and source channel.

For a business that budgets fuel or energy

Start with the benchmark most relevant to your exposure, then add the EIA feed or release notice that informs your planning cycle. If intraday changes or several exchange products affect a documented risk process, evaluate the appropriate CME page and account features. Do not add real-time alerts merely because they are available; define the event that would require immediate attention first.

For a market participant who needs intraday information

Use the exchange-oriented frequency that matches the decision: real-time when timing is critical, delayed when a short lag is acceptable, end-of-day for routine reconciliation and historical data for analysis. Keep EIA’s daily series as a separate reference rather than treating it as a replacement for contract-specific market information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce noise without missing important changes

  • Use one channel per purpose. Dashboard for a reference price, RSS for articles, email for release notices and exchange tools for product-level monitoring.
  • Prefer batching. A digest or scheduled review is easier to manage than a push notification for every post.
  • Mute at the application level. RSS and mail applications usually control banners, sounds and badges independently of the subscription itself.
  • Review subscriptions monthly. Remove a feed when it no longer answers a defined question.
  • Keep alerts exceptional. An alert should correspond to a threshold, release or product you can act on. If you cannot explain what you would do after receiving it, it probably belongs in a manual review queue.
  • Separate news from action. Reading a headline is not the same as deciding that a price has changed enough to matter.

Troubleshoot common tracking problems

The dashboard value looks out of date

Check the observation date first. EIA’s spot-price series are daily, so the latest published observation may not represent the current moment. A same-day headline and a previous-day spot value can both be correct.

An RSS feed produces too many notifications

Change the reader’s delivery setting to manual, digest or scheduled review. Then disable push notifications for that feed or its folder. If the volume remains unhelpful, unsubscribe from broad feeds and keep only the category tied to your question.

You expected a Wednesday petroleum report but it did not arrive

Check EIA’s current information-release schedule and look for a holiday adjustment. The Weekly Petroleum Status Report is usually released Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time, not guaranteed at that time every week.

A CME page does not show the frequency you expected

Confirm the exact energy product and whether you are looking for real-time, delayed, end-of-day or historical information. The market pages describe these categories, but they do not establish that every product offers every frequency under the same terms. Consult the product-specific details rather than assuming a universal access or cost rule.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Two prices seem to disagree

Identify the benchmark, location, contract and timestamp for each value. Cushing WTI, Europe Brent, a futures contract and a gasoline benchmark are different objects. Differences can reflect the instrument and timing rather than a data error.

A practical checklist

  1. Define whether you need a daily spot reference, exchange-market detail or energy news.
  2. Bookmark EIA’s petroleum spot-price dashboard for Cushing WTI and Europe Brent.
  3. Choose a review cadence that fits your decision, from weekly to intraday.
  4. Add one EIA RSS feed only if its subject has a clear purpose.
  5. Use petroleum-release email when official announcement timing matters.
  6. Remember that the Weekly Petroleum Status Report is usually Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time, with holiday-related changes possible.
  7. Consider CME pages, alerts, watchlists or reports only when you need exchange products, additional frequencies or saved market monitoring.
  8. Turn off unnecessary push notifications and keep your review queue small.
  9. Label every recorded value with its benchmark and observation date.

The Bottom Line

For most readers, a bookmarked EIA spot-price dashboard plus one deliberately chosen EIA feed is enough. Add petroleum-release email for scheduled data notices, and use exchange-level pages or alerts only when contract-specific or intraday information genuinely affects your decisions.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
