There is no single “oil price.” To track crude accurately, first choose the benchmark that matches the oil or market you mean—usually WTI at Cushing for U.S. crude, Brent for much of the international market, or Dubai/Oman for Middle Eastern crude sold into Asia. Then identify whether the number is a spot price, a futures quote, or a settlement index, and check its timestamp, contract month, units and currency.

What “the oil price” actually means

News reports often say that oil rose or fell without naming the instrument. That shorthand hides several different markets. Crude oils vary in density, sulfur content, location and shipping cost, so buyers and sellers use benchmark grades as reference prices. A physical barrel is normally priced as a benchmark plus or minus a differential agreed for its quality, location and delivery terms.

The three benchmarks most readers encounter are West Texas Intermediate (WTI), Brent and Dubai/Oman. They are not interchangeable quotes for an identical barrel. A price shown by a website can also represent a physical spot assessment, a futures contract for a particular delivery month, or an index calculated for settlement. Those values can move differently even when they carry the same “oil” label.

Choose the benchmark that matches your question

Benchmark Crude and price point Where it is most useful
WTI Light, sweet crude produced in the United States and priced at the Cushing, Oklahoma trading hub. U.S. crude pricing; a reference for some Canadian, Mexican and South American imports.
Brent Light, sweet North Sea crude and related market assessments. Crude produced or traded in Europe, the Mediterranean and Africa, plus Australia and some Asian markets; a widely used international reference.
Dubai/Oman Medium, sour crude grades whose prices are commonly averaged into a benchmark. Middle Eastern crude exported to Asian markets.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) describes WTI as U.S.-produced light, sweet crude priced at Cushing. It describes Brent as a North Sea light, sweet benchmark used across several Atlantic and Asia-Pacific markets, while Dubai and Oman are medium, sour grades used for Middle East-to-Asia pricing. Pick the benchmark based on the physical or financial market you are trying to understand, not simply on whichever quote appears first in a search result.

WTI: the U.S. reference

WTI’s named location matters. “WTI” generally means the crude benchmark at Cushing, Oklahoma, rather than a universal price for every U.S. barrel. Pipeline capacity, storage levels and regional bottlenecks can make the Cushing price diverge from prices on the U.S. Gulf Coast or in another producing basin. Use WTI/Cushing when your question concerns U.S. crude or a contract explicitly tied to that hub.

Brent: the international reference

Brent is a North Sea-based benchmark and is used to price production and cargoes well beyond the North Sea. ICE characterizes Brent as a price barometer for approximately 80% of global crude; treat that as ICE’s description of the benchmark’s reach, not as a separately verified share of every transaction. A Brent quote is still not a quote for every grade: individual cargoes trade at differentials to the benchmark.

Dubai/Oman: the Middle East-to-Asia reference

Dubai and Oman are medium, sour crudes. Their benchmark is particularly relevant when following Middle Eastern exports into Asian refineries, where a light, sweet Atlantic benchmark may not represent the barrels being purchased. EIA’s background explains that Dubai production was about 34,000 barrels per day and Oman production about 0.94 million barrels per day in 2013, historical figures that help explain Oman’s role in the benchmark. They are not current production estimates.

How do I track oil prices for free?

For a transparent public baseline, start with the EIA’s “Spot Prices for Crude Oil and Petroleum Products” table. It lists WTI at Cushing and Brent for Europe in U.S. dollars per barrel and links to historical series. The table is useful for checking a benchmark and building a historical record without assuming that a trading screen is showing the same measure.

  1. Open the EIA spot-price table. Locate the rows for WTI at Cushing and Brent for Europe rather than a generic petroleum-product row.
  2. Read the reporting date. Note the date attached to each observation. A value labeled with an earlier business day is not a live quote.
  3. Record the unit and currency. The cited EIA table reports crude prices in dollars per barrel. Keep that unit with the value when exporting or sharing it.
  4. Choose the frequency. Use daily data for short-term history, or the weekly, monthly and annual views for trend analysis.
  5. Follow the historical-series link. Download or copy the series if you need a spreadsheet, chart or repeatable calculation.
  6. Label the result as a spot-price observation. Do not call an EIA weekly average a real-time market quote.

EIA states that its weekly, monthly and annual figures are unweighted averages of daily closing spot prices. They are therefore summaries of completed observations, not necessarily the latest tradable price. The table page viewed for this guide showed reporting dates through October 2, 2026, a release date of October 7, 2026, and a next scheduled release of October 15, 2026. Those page dates are time-sensitive; check the table itself for the current release schedule before citing a value.

When you need futures-market quotes

Futures prices answer a different question from a spot table: what price is the market quoting for a specified contract and delivery month? A futures curve can show several expiries at once, allowing you to compare near-term and later expectations, storage economics and hedging costs. It can also be affected by contract expiry and rollover, so “front month” is not a permanent instrument.

CME’s energy market pages identify WTI and Brent products and describe real-time, delayed, end-of-day and historical data frequencies. The exact display, access conditions and charges depend on the service and account. ICE’s oil page describes its benchmark complex and says its market data is delayed by at least 15 minutes. Never infer that a quote is free or real time merely because it appears on a public webpage.

Checklist for reading a futures quote

  • Exchange and product: identify whether the screen shows a CME or ICE contract and the exact contract name.
  • Contract month: record the expiry, such as a named month and year. Two “Brent” or “WTI” prices can refer to different expiries.
  • Quote type: distinguish last trade, bid, ask, official settlement and an end-of-day reference.
  • Timestamp and delay: note the exchange time zone, date and whether data is real time, delayed or historical.
  • Units and currency: verify dollars per barrel or another unit before comparing with EIA data.
  • Roll treatment: if you are building a long history, document how the series moves from an expiring contract to the next one.

What the Brent Index measures

The ICE Brent Index is a settlement measure, not the same thing as a continuously changing front-month futures quote. ICE says the index represents an average of prevailing North Sea cash or forward market trading for the relevant delivery month. Its calculation uses published full-cargo-size trades and assessments; the current methodology page specifies 700,000 barrels as the full-cargo size considered.

ICE publishes the index on the day after expiry of the front-month ICE Brent futures contract and uses it as the final cash settlement price. That timing and methodology explain why an index value may differ from a quote observed during the trading day. When citing a Brent number, say whether it is a futures price, a spot assessment or the Brent Index.

  1. Match the benchmark and location. Confirm Brent, WTI/Cushing, Dubai/Oman or another grade. Geography is part of the price.
  2. Match the instrument. Determine whether each figure is spot, a futures contract or a settlement index.
  3. Match the contract month. For futures, write down the expiry shown. A front-month quote can change identity when the contract rolls.
  4. Match the timestamp. Compare observations from the same date and time zone, and record any stated delay.
  5. Match units and currency. Convert only after confirming whether both values are per barrel and in the same currency.
  6. Explain the differential. Account for grade quality, sulfur, transportation, regional supply and demand, storage and refinery utilization.

For example, comparing an EIA daily WTI spot observation with a delayed Brent futures quote can produce a difference that is entirely methodological. It combines two benchmarks, two locations, two instruments and possibly two timestamps. The comparison becomes meaningful only after those fields are aligned.

Why are Brent and WTI prices different?

Brent and WTI represent different crude streams and trading locations. Both are commonly described as light and sweet, but their physical markets are exposed to different production systems, pipelines, storage hubs, shipping routes and refinery demand. A regional outage can affect one benchmark more than the other; a change in Atlantic Basin supply can move Brent while Cushing storage conditions put separate pressure on WTI.

EIA explains that other crude grades are priced against benchmarks through differentials reflecting API gravity or density, sulfur content, transportation costs, regional and global supply-demand conditions, and refinery utilization. Those factors also help explain why no benchmark should be treated as a universal “world oil price.”

Location and logistics

WTI is tied to an inland U.S. hub. The ability to move barrels into or out of Cushing can influence the local price. Brent-related cargoes are connected to seaborne trade, so shipping availability and international flows matter more directly. Dubai/Oman pricing reflects the conditions of medium, sour barrels moving toward Asian buyers.

Quality and refinery value

Light, sweet crude generally requires less processing to produce many fuels than heavier, sour crude, but the value of any grade depends on the refinery configuration able to process it. A refiner may pay a premium or accept a discount based on expected product yields, sulfur-removal costs and local fuel demand.

Quote timing and contract structure

A spot assessment, a prompt futures contract and a later-dated contract can all respond to the same headline at different speeds. Settlement rules, delivery windows and contract expiry add another layer of difference. Before attributing a spread to supply fundamentals, eliminate these measurement differences.

Finding historical crude-oil prices

Use the EIA historical links for a reproducible public series of WTI/Cushing and Brent spot observations. Decide in advance whether your analysis needs daily closes or averaged weekly, monthly or annual data. Keep the original reporting date and release date in your file so a later reader can distinguish an observation from the date it became available.

For futures history, use an exchange data service that identifies the contract and its settlement convention. A continuous chart may splice several contracts together; ask whether it is back-adjusted, ratio-adjusted or simply rolled on a calendar rule. Without that metadata, a long-term chart can show artificial jumps at rollover.

A practical data-record template

Field What to record
Benchmark WTI/Cushing, Brent, Dubai/Oman or another named grade.
Instrument Spot close, futures last trade, futures settlement or index.
Contract Expiry month and year when applicable.
Date and time Observation date, publication date, time zone and delay.
Value Price, unit and currency.
Source notes Release schedule, methodology, roll rule or any access limitation.

How to build a reliable daily tracking routine

  1. Define the use case. Choose U.S. crude, international seaborne crude, Middle East-to-Asia pricing or a financial hedge.
  2. Set a primary series. Use the EIA spot table for a public spot baseline or an exchange feed for a specified futures contract.
  3. Add a secondary series only when it answers a different question. For example, pair WTI/Cushing spot with Brent spot to study geographic spreads, not to create one blended oil price.
  4. Capture metadata with every value. Save benchmark, instrument, expiry, timestamp, unit and currency alongside the number.
  5. Check for release lag. A delayed exchange display or an EIA daily close should be labeled as such in dashboards and reports.
  6. Review rolls and methodology changes. Futures series and settlement indexes can change behavior around expiry; read the current exchange specification when your analysis depends on the detail.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Calling a weekly average a live price

Symptom: A report says oil is trading at an EIA weekly value. Fix: describe it as an unweighted average of daily closing spot prices and cite the reporting period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing Brent spot with WTI futures

Symptom: The apparent spread changes sharply without a clear market event. Fix: use the same quote type, or explain why the instruments differ.

Omitting the futures expiry

Symptom: A chart labeled only “WTI” changes when the front month expires. Fix: show the contract month and document the roll rule.

Assuming every exchange quote is real time

Symptom: A displayed price appears to lag another screen. Fix: check the product’s data frequency and delay. CME lists multiple frequencies, and ICE states at least a 15-minute delay on its oil page.

Treating benchmarks as interchangeable

Symptom: A Middle East-to-Asia cargo is evaluated only against WTI. Fix: use Dubai/Oman or the benchmark specified in the physical contract, then analyze the agreed differential.

Useful historical context—and its limits

EIA reported that Brent loadings averaged 0.86 million barrels per day in 2013, about 1% of world crude production estimated at 76 million barrels per day. The same 2014 EIA background reported Dubai production of 34,000 barrels per day and Oman production of 0.94 million barrels per day. These figures explain why a benchmark can represent a broad trading system even when the named production stream is relatively small, but they describe 2013 conditions and should not be presented as current volumes.

Benchmark importance is also not identical to physical production volume. A benchmark’s usefulness depends on liquidity, transparent assessments, deliverability, participation and the contracts that reference it. ICE’s description of Brent’s approximately 80% global price-barometer role is an example of market influence, not a claim that 80% of the world’s barrels are Brent crude.

Which data source should you use?

Need Suitable starting point What to verify
Public spot baseline EIA spot-price table and linked history. Reporting date, release date, daily-close methodology, unit and currency.
Live or delayed futures monitoring CME or ICE market-data display for the named WTI or Brent contract. Exchange, instrument, expiry, real-time versus delayed status and access terms.
Settlement analysis The applicable exchange settlement or ICE Brent Index methodology. Delivery month, publication timing, eligible trades and assessments, and settlement role.
Long-run research A downloadable historical spot or contract-settlement series with documented metadata. Roll rules, missing observations, revisions, time zones and currency conversions.

No single source is best for every purpose. EIA is a strong public reference for historical spot prices. Exchange data is appropriate when the contract, expiry and trading status matter. An index methodology is necessary when a settlement value—not an intraday quote—is the number in a contract.

A concise interpretation example

Suppose a dashboard shows Brent at one value and WTI at another. First label each as spot or futures and write down the timestamps. If both are spot closes from the same day, the remaining spread can be investigated through location, quality, transport and regional supply-demand conditions. If one is a front-month future and the other is a monthly EIA average, the figures are not directly comparable; replace one series or clearly present the methodological difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, if a contract uses the ICE Brent Index for final cash settlement, the relevant number is the index published after front-month expiry, not whichever Brent futures quote happened to be visible during the trading session. The contract language determines the correct reference.
