TCGplayer provides product-level pages and sales-based metrics for individual packs; eBay’s Price Guide can provide a second completed-sale view. For every comparison, include shipping, identify the currency and marketplace, and note how recent and how numerous the transactions are.
A listed price tells you what a seller wants. A completed sale tells you what a buyer actually paid. Treating those as interchangeable is the most common reason pack-price tracking goes wrong.

Define the exact product before recording a price
“A Magic pack” is not a sufficiently precise product description. The set, sealed format and, where relevant, the language or edition determine whether two observations belong in the same series. Start a tracking record only after you can identify the item unambiguously.

Separate single packs from other sealed formats
A single booster pack, a booster box and another sealed configuration are different products. A box price cannot be divided by the number of packs and treated as a direct single-pack sale: packaging, buyer demand and seller behavior can differ. Keep each format in its own series.

- Single booster pack: one sealed pack from a named set.
- Booster box: a sealed box containing multiple packs; track it on a separate product page or worksheet.
- Other sealed formats: bundles, specialty products and mixed lots should not be merged with ordinary single-pack observations.
Use a product-identification checklist
- Write the complete set name exactly as it appears on the marketplace product page.
- Write the sealed format, such as single booster pack, rather than only “booster.”
- Check that the listing is for a sealed product, not an opened pack, loose cards or a card single.
- Record language, edition or other distinguishing information when the marketplace separates those variants.
- Record the marketplace and currency before entering any number.
TCGplayer’s product pages include individual booster-pack entries, including pages with Market Price History. Searching for the set name followed by “booster pack” is a practical way to locate the relevant entry, but verify the product title before copying a figure.
Use TCGplayer to establish a sales-based baseline
TCGplayer is useful because its product metrics distinguish completed transactions from live offers. Its pages describe several values that answer different questions, so record the label beside every figure instead of creating a single undifferentiated “price” column.
Find the set-specific product page
- Search TCGplayer for the complete set name and “booster pack.”
- Open the product page for the individual sealed pack, not a box or a card from the set.
- Confirm the product title, format and any variant information against your identification checklist.
- Open the page’s price-history or market-data area and note the date and filters shown.
- Save the page name in your worksheet so a later observation can be checked against the same product.
The example product pages available from TCGplayer demonstrate the category, but marketplace values and listings change. Use the live page for the current observation rather than treating an old displayed example as a standing quotation.
Read “Market Price” as a completed-sale measure
TCGplayer’s official definition is: “Market Price: This price point is compiled from recent sales completed on TCGplayer.com.” That makes Market Price a sales-based reference for the selected product and filters. It is not a promise that a pack can currently be purchased at that amount, and it does not describe every marketplace.
Record the observation with its date, currency and selected filters. If the page changes the result when you select a condition, language or other variant, keep those selections consistent between snapshots.
Keep “Listed Median” in a separate column
Listed Median describes current listings rather than completed transactions. It answers, approximately, what active sellers are asking at the time of the observation. An asking price can remain unsold, so it is evidence of seller expectations, not proof of market-clearing value.
When you compare Listed Median with Market Price, label the two values explicitly. A gap can indicate that current asks are above or below recent realized prices, but the gap alone does not explain why. Check recency, listing count, shipping and product matching before drawing a conclusion.

Do not combine observations made with different filters or time windows and call the result one continuous series. Your worksheet should show the exact window used for each entry.
Build a repeatable tracking sheet
A simple spreadsheet is enough if every row preserves the context needed to audit the comparison. Use one row per observed sale, listing snapshot or marketplace summary, and never overwrite an earlier observation.
Recommended columns
| Column | What to enter | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Observation date | The date and, when useful, time you viewed the data | Shows how current the figure was. |
| Marketplace | TCGplayer or eBay | Metrics from different venues are not automatically equivalent. |
| Set | Exact set name | Prevents mixing releases. |
| Sealed format | Single booster pack, box or other format | Keeps unlike products out of one series. |
| Variant details | Language, edition, condition or selected filter, when shown | Documents the scope of the number. |
| Price type | Completed sale, Market Price, Most Recent Sale or Listed Median | Separates realized prices from active asks. |
| Item price | The product amount displayed | Allows the merchandise component to be checked. |
| Shipping | Shipping attached to the offer or sale, if shown | Enables an apples-to-apples transaction-cost comparison. |
| Tax or checkout charge | Whether tax or another checkout charge is included, excluded or unknown | Prevents a partial total from being presented as the final cost. |
| Currency | The currency displayed by the marketplace | Stops values from different currencies being blended. |
| Sale date or history window | The transaction date, or the period covered by the summary | Shows recency and avoids false precision. |
| Activity note | Number of visible sales, listing depth or a data-sufficiency warning | Indicates how strong the signal is. |
Take snapshots without destroying history
Add a new row whenever you check a page. Keep the previous rows even when the current value changes. A sequence of dated observations lets you distinguish a one-off movement from a repeated pattern and lets another reader see which filters were used.

Choose a checking schedule that fits your purpose. A buyer comparing offers may need a snapshot when shopping; a collector studying a set can use a regular interval. The important rule is consistency: use the same product page, filters, currency and price definitions whenever possible.
Compare the full transaction cost, not just the headline amount
When two packs appear to have different prices, calculate the amount a buyer would actually have to pay under the same assumptions. TCGplayer states that its marketplace listing order uses item price plus shipping. That means a lower item price can still produce a higher delivered total.
Use a landed-cost calculation
For each offer, record:
- The listed item price.
- The shipping charge.
- Any tax or other checkout charge, stating whether it is included, excluded or not available at the time of comparison.
- The currency and the marketplace.
In a worksheet, you can calculate landed cost = item price + shipping + included tax or checkout charges. If a charge is unknown, do not silently treat it as zero; mark the total as incomplete and explain what is missing.
Keep sale metrics and offer totals distinct
A completed-sale Market Price may be reported differently from a live listing’s item-plus-shipping total. Do not add shipping to one metric and leave it out of another without documenting the difference. If the source does not reveal whether shipping was included in a completed transaction, preserve that uncertainty in the activity note.
Use the same currency when comparing two figures. If conversion is necessary, record the conversion date and method in a separate note rather than presenting converted values as if the marketplace supplied them directly.

Judge how much confidence a price deserves
A number with little transaction activity is weaker evidence than a repeated pattern. Price tracking is not only about the amount; it is also about the quality and freshness of the observations behind it.
Check the three basic strength signals
- Recency: How long ago was the latest completed sale? A long interval makes the current relevance uncertain.
- Sales activity: Are there repeated completed transactions, or only one visible sale?
- Listing depth: Are there several active offers to compare, or only one seller?
Use these signals together. A recent price supported by repeated sales is a stronger guide than an old isolated transaction. A current Listed Median based on very few offers is still an asking-price snapshot, not a broad consensus.
Interpret TCGplayer’s 30-day volatility carefully
TCGplayer describes a Market Price Volatility measure over a 30-day period. The measure can be indeterminate when there are not enough sales during those 30 days. An indeterminate result is a data-sufficiency warning, not evidence that the price is stable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Record the displayed volatility status and its time window. Do not compare a 30-day measure with a value calculated over another period as though they were the same statistic. If the page reports insufficient activity, widen your context by reviewing the dated sales history and, where possible, a second venue.
Use eBay as a cross-check, not a substitute for product matching
eBay’s Price Guide is another source for completed-sale context. eBay says the guide uses completed sales, includes accepted Best Offer prices and updates every 24 hours. It describes up to two years of sales history.
Verify that an eBay result is really a sealed pack
- Search for the exact set and the single-pack format.
- Inspect the matched item title and images for signs that it is a box, lot, opened item or individual card instead.
- Check whether the recorded result is a completed sale and whether an accepted Best Offer is shown.
- Record the sale date, currency and any visible shipping information.
- Exclude results that cannot be compared with your defined product.
eBay’s Price Guide focuses on trading-card matching, so a result being returned by the guide does not by itself establish that it is comparable to a sealed booster pack. Treat the matching step as mandatory.
Align the two marketplaces before comparing
Compare TCGplayer and eBay only after matching the set, sealed format, variant and currency. Keep the marketplace name beside every figure. Differences can reflect venue audience, shipping practices, listing mix, timing or the fact that one source has fewer qualifying sales; they are not automatically evidence that one source is wrong.

| Comparison axis | Question to answer | Acceptable record |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Is the set and sealed format identical? | Exact set name and “single booster pack” or another clearly stated format. |
| Price meaning | Is this a completed sale or an active ask? | Completed sale, Market Price, Most Recent Sale or Listed Median, labeled. |
| Delivered cost | Are item price and shipping both represented? | Item amount, shipping amount and whether tax or checkout charges are included. |
| Timing | When did the sale occur or when was the listing observed? | Date plus the source’s stated history window. |
| Activity | How many qualifying observations support the number? | Visible sale count, listing depth or an explicit insufficient-data note. |
| Scope | Does the source cover this marketplace only or a broader set of venues? | Marketplace named beside the figure; no claim that it represents the entire secondary market. |
Analyze movement without inventing a market-wide statistic
Once your sheet contains dated observations, describe what the records actually show. You can say that completed sales have moved upward or downward within your selected marketplace and window when repeated observations support that description. Avoid turning a short, thin series into a claim about all Magic packs or the entire secondary market.
Separate direction from confidence
Direction answers “what changed in the recorded observations?” Confidence answers “how dependable is that apparent change?” A sequence with several recent sales and consistent product matching supports a stronger description than a sequence built from one old sale and a few live asks.
Do not average unlike observations
Keep single-pack sales separate from boxes, bundles and card singles. Keep completed transactions separate from Listed Median and other live-ask measures. Keep currencies and variants separate. An arithmetic average that mixes those categories produces a precise-looking number with no clear meaning.
Explain gaps rather than filling them
If no sale appears for a long period, record the gap. Do not substitute the cheapest active listing, a box price divided by pack count or an unrelated set. A missing observation is more honest than a fabricated equivalent.
Common tracking mistakes and their fixes
Mistake: using a box listing as a pack price
Fix: Create separate product series. Use the individual-pack product page for a single-pack question.
Mistake: treating an asking price as a sale
Fix: Label Listed Median and other live offers as asks. Use Market Price, Most Recent Sale or a clearly completed transaction for realized-price analysis.
Mistake: ignoring shipping
Fix: Record item price plus shipping, then state whether tax or another checkout charge is included.
Mistake: quoting a stale last sale as current
Fix: Include the transaction date and mention the time since that sale when assessing relevance.

Mistake: blending TCGplayer and eBay into one number
Fix: Keep venue-specific rows and compare them only after product matching, timing and transaction-cost treatment are aligned.
Mistake: accepting an automated product match without inspection
Fix: On eBay, verify that the matched result is a sealed pack from the intended set rather than a card, box, opened item or mixed lot.
A practical weekly or purchase-time workflow
Use the following procedure whenever you start tracking a set or evaluate an offer.
- Define the record: write the exact set, single-pack format and variant details.
- Open TCGplayer: locate the individual product page and confirm the title.
- Capture sales metrics: record Market Price, Most Recent Sale, the displayed date or history window and the 30-day volatility status when available.
- Capture active asks: record Listed Median and the relevant listing details in separate fields.
- Normalize cost: add item price and shipping, then document tax or checkout-charge treatment.
- Assess activity: note visible sales, listing depth and any insufficient-data warning.
- Cross-check eBay: review completed results, accepted Best Offer sales and the available history, rejecting non-comparable matches.
- Compare like with like: align set, format, variant, currency, price type and time window before describing a difference.
- Archive the snapshot: save a new dated row instead of replacing the old one.
What your tracking can and cannot tell you
This method can show how a defined product’s recorded sales and active asks change on particular marketplaces. It can help you spot whether a current offer is far above or below recent realized prices and whether the evidence is supported by repeated activity.
It cannot establish a universal price for every seller, country or marketplace. TCGplayer’s metrics describe transactions and listings on TCGplayer.com; eBay’s guide describes eBay sales and its own matching scope. Shipping, taxes, currency, variant selection and marketplace audience can all affect comparability.
For that reason, publish or share every figure with its marketplace, currency, product definition, price type and date. A carefully qualified record is more useful than a larger number stripped of context.
