How to Track Indoor Walking Steps When Your Phone or Watch Misses Them

If your phone or watch misses indoor walking steps, start by keeping the sensor with you: carry your phone in a secure pocket, wear your watch correctly, and choose an indoor walking workout when available. Then check which device is supplying the step total in your health app. A short manual count can help you tell whether steps are being missed or whether two devices are simply showing different data.

Why indoor steps can go missing

Phones and watches count movement using sensors. A phone left on a desk cannot sense your walk, and carrying it in a bag or loose pocket can make movement harder to detect. Samsung notes that some steps may not register when a device is carried in a pocket or bag, and that multiple steps may need to be detected before activity is recorded. Samsung Health Step Tracker.

A watch also depends on how it is worn and how your arm moves. Treadmill walking, pushing a stroller, or carrying something can change the motion the watch senses. The count may therefore differ from a phone carried on your body, even when both devices are working as intended.

GPS is not required to detect every step indoors. Google Fit describes using phone sensors or a connected heart-rate monitor to record steps and activity. Google Fit help.

Fix phone step tracking first

  • Keep the phone on your body. Use a secure pocket rather than leaving it on a desk or treadmill console. A phone that is not moving with you cannot sense the walk.
  • Give it a continuous walking sample. Very short or light bouts may not be recorded immediately. Walk continuously for a little longer before deciding the counter is broken; Samsung says multiple steps may be needed for activity to register.
  • Check the app’s data source. If your health app is connected to a watch or other tracker, look for a step-data or connected-device setting and confirm which source is being displayed before comparing totals.

Set up a watch for treadmill or indoor walking

When the watch offers an indoor workout, start it before the walk. Apple recommends selecting an indoor workout type for treadmill activity, and notes that the Workout app can help earn Exercise credit when both hands are needed while walking. Apple Watch workout types. An indoor workout adds exercise context; it does not guarantee a perfect step total.

Wear the watch securely as directed for your device and check that the workout matches what you are doing. Samsung cautions that watch measurements can be affected by how the watch is worn and used. Samsung Health and Galaxy Watch guidance.

Check the count with a short manual walk

  1. Choose a safe, level indoor route and note the current step total on the device you want to check.
  2. Walk a short distance at your ordinary pace while counting each step yourself. A handheld tally counter can make it easier to keep count.
  3. Compare the manual count with the change in the device total, not with its all-day number.
  4. Repeat once with the phone carried securely or the watch worn correctly, changing one condition at a time.

This is a practical spot check, not a precision test: a short sample can reveal a placement or configuration issue, but it cannot establish that a device is accurate in every setting. A tally counter is an optional audit aid rather than a replacement for routine tracking. Runner’s World comparison article.

Consider a separate pedometer only if it solves a real gap

A clip-on pedometer is an option if you often leave your phone behind and do not wear a watch. It senses movement from its own position, so placement still matters. A walking training manual describes clip-on pedometers as a device category, but that does not establish which current model is most accurate. Walking for Health booklet.

If you need the pedometer’s readings to appear in a phone app, verify compatibility and synchronization with your particular phone and app before choosing a device. A separately recorded count may not automatically merge with the phone’s or watch’s total.
