A dated log can make a dermatology appointment more useful, but it cannot diagnose the cause or tell you which treatment to use. Some daily shedding is normal: the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) gives 50 to 100 hairs a day as a general reference, not a personal diagnostic cutoff.
What to record in a hair-shedding log
Use a notebook or a simple digital note; a branded journal or app is not necessary. Record observations at a consistent interval so you can describe how things change over time. If you choose to count loose hairs, treat the number as an estimate rather than a test.

- Amount: Note whether shedding seems usual for you, somewhat higher, or much higher. If comparing counts, keep the time between washes and your styling routine as similar as practical. Hair visible after washing can reflect accumulation since the previous wash, and loose-hair amounts vary with washing, styling, and curl pattern.
- Location: Write down whether the change seems diffuse across the scalp, concentrated at the temples or hairline, more visible at the crown or vertex, associated with a widening part, or limited to a distinct patch. Note whether more scalp is visible and whether that area is changing.
- Scalp and hair observations: Record irritation, scale, tenderness, or short broken hairs. These details may help describe what you see, but they do not identify a condition on their own.
- Recent events: Note childbirth, fever or significant illness, surgery, major stress, weight loss or dietary change, and medication or contraceptive changes. Include approximate dates where you can.
- Photos: A dated photo can help you compare visible distribution. Use similar lighting, camera angle, hairstyle, and parting each time. This is a practical comparison method, not a standardized diagnostic photography protocol.
Do not stop a prescribed medicine because you suspect it is related to shedding; speak with the prescriber first.
How to describe the pattern without diagnosing it
Distribution, speed of change, timing, and associated clues can help a clinician understand your history. They cannot establish a diagnosis by themselves, and more than one cause may be present at once.

| What you notice | What to record | Why it may matter in an assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Diffuse shedding across the scalp | When it started and whether a possible trigger occurred in the preceding months | Telogen effluvium can cause increased shedding across the scalp; it is often noticed 2 to 4 months after a triggering event, according to DermNet. |
| Gradual thinning at the part, anterior scalp, or vertex | Which areas look thinner and whether the change is gradual or progressing | This distribution may be a clue a clinician evaluates when considering pattern hair loss. |
| A round patch or sudden marked loss | When it appeared, how quickly it changed, and whether other areas are involved | Alopecia areata can involve round patches or diffuse loss; sudden extensive shedding can also have other causes, including anagen effluvium. |
The 2-to-4-month delay is a reason to include earlier events in your timeline, not proof that a particular event caused your shedding. A recent trigger also does not rule out an underlying pattern of hair loss.
Why a hair count is not a diagnosis
The AAD’s 50-to-100-hairs-a-day figure is a general description of normal shedding. It is not a threshold that distinguishes normal from abnormal for an individual. Counts can be hard to compare when wash intervals, styling, or the amount of hair that has accumulated between washes differ.

DermNet describes a trichogram showing more than 25% telogen hairs as strongly suggestive of telogen effluvium. A trichogram is a clinical test, not a home counting target; do not use that percentage to interpret hairs collected from a brush, shower, or pillow.

The AAD puts the central distinction plainly: “A dermatologist can tell you whether you have hair loss or excessive hair shedding.” A log helps explain chronology and visible changes; it does not replace scalp assessment.

When to arrange a professional assessment
Arrange an appointment with a dermatologist if the amount of shedding concerns you, thinning or a bald patch is visible, the pattern is progressing, shedding persists, or an illness or medication may be involved. Seek prompt professional assessment for sudden extensive loss, loss involving eyebrows or body hair, or scalp inflammation.
A dermatologist may examine the scalp and hair, review your history, perform a gentle pull test, and order blood tests or a scalp biopsy when a medical cause is suspected. Some shedding can resolve as a trigger passes; other causes may need treatment. The appropriate next step depends on the cause, and the AAD notes that no single hair-loss treatment works for everyone.
