Open your property’s Search results Performance report in Google Search Console, enable Total clicks, Total impressions and Average CTR, then use the Queries or Pages table with a defined date range and filters. This gives you a reproducible view of how often Google showed your site, how often people clicked, and where the gap deserves investigation.
What Google Search Console is measuring
The Search results Performance report describes traffic that came from Google Search to the property you are viewing. It is different from a general analytics report: the report starts with Google Search results impressions and clicks, then groups those events by dimensions such as query, page, country or device. Google’s definitions and counting rules vary by result type, so treat the numbers as Search Console measurements rather than a universal count of every visit.

Google’s basic explanation is straightforward: the CTR is the click count divided by the impression count. The practical meaning of each headline metric is:
Recommended Free Tools
| Metric | What it tells you | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks | How many times a user clicked a result leading to the property. | Counting follows the result-type rules documented by Google; it is not a promise that every subsequent visit or interaction was recorded. |
| Impressions | How often a result from the property appeared in Google Search. | Visibility is counted differently for different result types and placements. |
| Average CTR | The proportion of impressions that produced clicks. | CTR is calculated as clicks divided by impressions. There is no official, universal “good CTR” threshold. |
| Average position | The average position of the property’s topmost result for the selected grouping. | It is an average, not a fixed rank guaranteed for every searcher; location, device, time and search history can change what people see. |
For the formal definitions and result-type examples, see Google’s explanation of impressions, position and clicks.

Open the report and turn on the right metrics
- Sign in to Search Console and open the property you own or have access to.
- In the left navigation, select Performance, then Search results. Google’s default view shows clicks and impressions for the past three months.
- Above the chart, select the metric cards for Total clicks, Total impressions and Average CTR. You can also enable Average position when ranking context is useful.
- Choose the date selector to replace the default three-month window or to create a comparison.
- Scroll to the table and select Queries to see the searches that exposed your site, or Pages to see the landing URLs that received visibility and clicks.
- Use the filter controls when you need a specific search type, country, device, URL or search appearance.
The report can be opened directly from the Search results Performance report documentation. If a property has little or no data, verify that you selected the correct property and that your account has access; Search Console only reports data for the property scope you opened.
Choose the table dimension that answers your question
The same report answers different questions depending on the table tab. Start with one dimension instead of mixing unrelated rows, then add a filter or comparison to isolate the pattern.
| Table or dimension | Best question to ask | Useful follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Queries | Which search terms caused Google to show or send traffic to the site? | Filter by country, device, date or search appearance to see whether intent or audience changes the result. |
| Pages | Which landing URLs earned impressions and clicks? | Select a URL row, then switch to Queries to see the searches associated with that page. |
| Countries | Where did search visibility and clicks occur? | Compare equivalent periods before attributing a change to content or technical work. |
| Devices | How do mobile, desktop and other device categories differ? | Look for a CTR or position pattern that exists on one device but not another. |
| Search appearance | Which eligible search presentation produced the exposure? | Use it to separate ordinary web results from specific result features available in the property’s data. |
| Dates | When did clicks, impressions, CTR or position change? | Use daily data for a short incident and weekly or monthly granularity for a steadier trend. |
A row can be selected to filter the report. For example, select a page in the Pages table, then inspect the Queries view for that URL; or select a country and examine how its queries and pages behave. Google lists these dimensions and filtering methods in its basic report setup guide.
Set a defensible date range and comparison
Click the date control above the chart and choose a preset or custom period. When judging change, select Compare and use equivalent periods, such as one week against the immediately preceding week or one month against the same month in the prior year. A comparison is meaningful only when the periods have the same number of days and similar seasonal context.
The chart supports hourly, daily, weekly or monthly granularity where available. Hourly data is useful for checking a recent launch or outage, but daily values can move for ordinary reasons. Weekly and monthly views smooth those fluctuations and are usually easier to interpret for editorial or SEO decisions. Google’s walkthrough describes comparisons such as last week versus the previous week in How are you performing on Google?.

Do not treat the newest points as final
Search Console can mark the newest values as preliminary. A dotted line on the chart indicates data that may change during the next few hours. Wait for those values to settle before declaring a sudden gain or loss, especially when the apparent change is confined to the latest day or hourly interval. The status and its implications are documented in Google’s Performance report overview and its explanation of report data.
Calculate and interpret CTR correctly
For any selected grouping, CTR is:
CTR = clicks ÷ impressions
For example, a row with 40 clicks and 2,000 impressions has a CTR of 2 percent. Search Console performs the calculation for you; the formula is useful when validating an export or explaining the metric to a colleague. Rounding and aggregation can make a hand calculation from displayed rows differ slightly from the headline value.

A branded query, a broad informational query, a country-specific query and a result shown on a small mobile screen have different click opportunities. Instead, compare like with like:
- the same query or page across equivalent periods;
- the same device category;
- the same country or region;
- similar average-position ranges; and
- the same search type and search appearance.
A CTR change is a signal to investigate, not proof that a title edit, snippet change or other intervention will improve performance. Google notes that many factors influence which result a searcher selects; its guidance cautions against expecting to capture every click. Read the interpretation guidance in Google’s performance help page before drawing a causal conclusion.
Use average position without treating it as a guaranteed rank
Average position is based on the topmost result from the property for each grouped impression. It is therefore not equivalent to a single fixed ranking that every user sees. Search results vary by time, place, device and recent search history, and the report averages those observations.

Position is most useful as context for CTR. A page with many impressions and a lower average position may have a different click opportunity from a page with fewer impressions near the top. Compare pages or queries with similar positions rather than declaring one CTR “good” solely because it is numerically higher.

A practical investigation starts with rows that have meaningful visibility but comparatively few clicks. This does not prove a defect; it identifies where the search presentation and the searcher’s intent deserve a closer look.
- In the Queries or Pages table, sort or scan for rows with substantial impressions and relatively low clicks or CTR.
- Select the row to filter the report, then check its country, device and search type. A low aggregate CTR may be caused by one segment rather than the whole audience.
- Open the relevant page and search for the query in a representative context. Review the title and snippet that Google presents, not only the title stored in your content management system.
- Ask whether the result answers the query’s intent, makes a clear promise and accurately describes the page. Check for a mismatch between an informational query and a transactional landing page, or between the wording of the result and the page’s actual content.
- Record the baseline date range, impressions, clicks, CTR, position and segment before changing anything. Recheck an equivalent period after the change instead of relying on a day-to-day fluctuation.
Google’s guidance treats low CTR as a prompt for analysis, not a guarantee that a particular edit will work. Avoid rewriting pages solely to chase a number when the query, country, device or result type has changed.
Understand why chart totals and page rows can differ
Search Console uses different aggregation rules for property-level and page-level views. At property aggregation, when multiple results from the property appear for one query, the property receives one impression and the topmost property position is reported. At page aggregation, each unique URL is counted separately. Consequently, totals in the chart and CTR or position values in a Pages table are not always directly interchangeable.
| View | How multiple results are treated | Effect on interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Property aggregation | One impression for the property when multiple property results appear for a query; the topmost property position is used. | Property-level CTR and average position are generally higher when several pages from the site appear. |
| Page aggregation | Each unique URL is counted separately. | Summing page rows or comparing them directly with the property chart can produce different totals. |
State the selected grouping whenever you share a screenshot or export. Otherwise, a reader may mistake a property total for a sum of URL-level rows. Google explains this distinction in About the Performance report data.

Account for canonical URL reporting
Click, impression and position data are generally assigned to Google’s selected canonical URL for page variations, although Google documents exceptions. A Pages row may therefore represent the canonical URL rather than the exact parameterized, mobile or alternate URL you expected to see.
When a URL appears to be missing, inspect canonical declarations and the indexing status of the page, then search the Pages table for the canonical address. Do not assume that every visible URL variant will receive a separate row. The canonical-assignment behavior and exceptions are covered in Google’s metric definitions.
Use search type and filters deliberately
Web is the default search type. If your question concerns image, video or news results, open the search-type control and choose the relevant type explicitly. Mixing search types can hide a change that occurs in only one result surface.
Filters can be combined to create a narrow slice, such as mobile queries from one country during a launch week, or one URL’s image performance. Apply the smallest set of filters that answers the question, because every additional segment reduces the number of impressions behind the comparison. Available dimensions and search-type controls are listed in the report setup documentation.

Export data for deeper analysis
Use the report’s export option when the on-screen table is not enough for a recurring analysis. Google’s table documentation describes fields that can include date, device, search type, query, impressions, clicks and position components. The exact columns depend on the report and grouping you export.
Best Value
When rebuilding CTR or position calculations in a spreadsheet, preserve the report’s aggregation logic. Do not add page-level rows and call the result a property total, and do not average position values without using the documented position components. Keep the selected date range, search type, filters and grouping alongside the file so a later reader can reproduce the slice. See Google’s table guidelines and reference for field and calculation details.
A repeatable monitoring routine
- Choose the question. Decide whether you are monitoring overall Search traffic, a set of queries, a landing page, a country, a device or a search appearance.
- Fix the scope. Select the property, search type, date range and comparison before reading the numbers.
- Record all four headline metrics. Capture clicks, impressions, CTR and, when relevant, average position.
- Segment the change. Use Queries or Pages first, then country, device or search appearance to locate where the movement occurred.
- Check data status. Exclude dotted-line preliminary points from a final conclusion.
- Investigate before editing. Review the presented title and snippet, query intent and page usefulness for high-impression, low-CTR rows.
- Compare after an equivalent interval. Keep the same grouping and filters when evaluating whether performance changed.
This routine prevents a common mistake: reacting to a single aggregate CTR number without knowing which queries, pages, devices, countries or result types produced it.
Troubleshoot common reading errors
The report shows clicks but the site’s analytics sessions are different
Search Console clicks and analytics sessions are different measurements. Search Console counts clicks on Google results under its result-type rules; analytics tools may apply redirects, consent choices, filtering, attribution windows or session definitions. Compare trends only after checking that the date range, property and time zone are aligned.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe latest day suddenly dropped
First look for the dotted preliminary-data indicator and wait for the values to settle. Then check whether the drop is limited to one country, device, search type, query or page. A preliminary or narrowly segmented change should not be treated as a site-wide loss.
The page URL I expected is absent
Search Console generally assigns data to Google’s selected canonical URL. Search for that canonical address in the Pages table and verify indexing and canonical signals before concluding that the page received no impressions.
The chart total does not equal the sum of page rows
Confirm whether the chart is property-aggregated and the table is page-aggregated. Multiple results for one query are counted once at the property level but separately by URL, so the two views can legitimately differ.
CTR is low but position looks strong
Check the query mix, country, device and search appearance. Average position is an average of topmost property results, not a guaranteed rank, and a result can be visible in contexts where the searcher has little reason to click. Review the actual title, snippet and intent before making a change.
Viewing Search Console data in a WordPress dashboard
Google recommends its Site Kit software as one way for WordPress users to view performance information, and other hosting providers may offer dashboards or plugins. Those interfaces can be convenient, but use the Search Console Performance report when you need the full set of dimensions, filters, comparison controls and data-status indicators described above. The recommendation is noted in Google’s guide to measuring performance on Google.
Quick Recap
What to remember when reporting results
- Identify the property, search type, date range, comparison and table grouping.
- Report clicks, impressions and CTR together; add average position as context rather than as a promised rank.
- State whether figures are property-level or page-level when aggregation matters.
- Mark the newest values as preliminary when Search Console shows the dotted-line indicator.
- Use like-for-like segments and periods instead of a universal CTR benchmark.
- Treat high impressions with low CTR as an investigation queue, not proof that one particular optimization caused or will cause an improvement.
