Use Google Search Console to measure how your content performs on Google News, and your website analytics tool to analyze visits to your articles. These are complementary measurements, not matching counts: Search Console reports activity on specified Google surfaces, while site analytics reports activity on your pages.
Which tools measure Google News visibility and visits?
Google Search Console’s Google News Performance report measures clicks, impressions and average click-through rate (CTR) from Google News surfaces. Your existing on-page analytics can show visits to standard HTML and AMP article pages and, when referrer information is available, help identify visits coming from Google News.

Keep Google News separate from the News tab in Google Search. The News tab is measured in Search Console’s Search Performance report by selecting Search type = News; it is not part of the Google News Performance report. [Google Search Console Help] [Google Search Console Help]
| Measurement | Surface or activity covered | What it helps you answer |
|---|---|---|
| Google News Performance in Search Console | Google News at news.google.com and Google News apps on Android and iOS | How many clicks and impressions your site received on those Google News surfaces, and the average CTR |
| Search Performance filtered to Search type = News | The News tab in Google Search | How your site performed in Google Search’s News results |
| Your website analytics | Visits and activity recorded on your article pages | Which visits and on-site activity your analytics implementation attributes to Google News or other referrers |
Google’s definitions for the two Search Console reports are documented in its Performance report guidance. Website analytics depends on the implementation and the visit data it receives.

How to track Google News visibility in Search Console
- Open the Google News Performance report for your verified Search Console property.
- Review clicks, impressions and average CTR. Use the page and country breakdowns to see which article URLs and locations account for the results.
- Choose a date range and granularity suited to the question. Use daily data to investigate a spike or drop; weekly or monthly views make broader trends easier to see. The 24-hour view offers hourly data, but it is preliminary.
- To measure the News tab in Google Search, open the Search Performance report and set Search type to News. Keep that series labeled separately from Google News app and site results.
The Google News Performance report’s data normally appears after a delay of two to three days, and the default reporting period covers the last three months. Its metrics are defined as follows: a click is a click from Google News that lands on your property; an impression is counted when a link to your site is scrolled into view; and average CTR is clicks divided by impressions. Moving away from a link and back, or paging away and back, does not create another impression during the same session. See Google’s report documentation for metric and report details.
How to find Google News referrals in website analytics
In your analytics tool, examine article-page visits and the HTTP referrer associated with those visits. Google identifies news.google.com and news.url.google.com as referrers from the Google News app and browsers. Google also recommends publishers use their own on-page analytics for further analysis of standard HTML and AMP articles. [Measure the impact of Google News]

Compare the referring visits and article URLs in analytics with the Search Console report to understand which stories generated visibility and which received visits. The referrer is useful attribution evidence, but it is not a guarantee that every Google News-originated visit will be identified as such by a particular analytics implementation.

Why Search Console clicks and analytics sessions differ
Do not expect Search Console clicks to equal analytics sessions. The systems count different events on different surfaces and process data separately. Google says Search Console data can take time to appear, recent data can be preliminary, and time-zone settings may differ from Analytics. In-article swipes between stories in the Google News Android and iOS apps, as well as notifications, are not counted as clicks or impressions in the report. [Google Search Console Help] [Google Analytics Help]
- Different event definitions: a Search Console click is a click from Google News that lands on your property; an analytics session is defined and recorded by your analytics system.
- Different time windows: allow for Search Console’s reporting delay and preliminary recent data. Align the date ranges before comparing totals.
- Time zones: Google News Performance daily dates use Pacific Time. In the 24-hour view, dates use the browser’s local time zone.
- URL attribution: Search Console assigns page metrics to the canonical URL, which may differ from the precise URL a reader lands on, such as a duplicate or mobile/desktop variant.
- Report presentation: chart and table totals can differ because of grouping, and tables may be limited or truncated. A chart/table discrepancy alone does not show that one system is broken.
For comparisons, align the date range and account for Pacific Time in daily Search Console data; compare article identities using canonical URLs rather than assuming every reported URL is the landing URL. Treat very recent Search Console results cautiously. These reporting details are described in Google’s Search Console documentation.
What Publisher Center changes mean for measurement
Google said publishers could continue tracking Google News traffic with their existing website analytics after it removed Publisher Center functionality associated with feed-rendered in-app reads, including custom Analytics tracking IDs and third-party tracking pixels. Google said Search Console’s Google News reports would not be affected. [Google News Publisher Center Help]

What these metrics can—and cannot—tell you
The reports show performance on the specific documented surfaces and the visits recorded on your site; they do not establish total exposure across every possible Google surface or explain why an individual article did or did not appear. Google describes News ranking as algorithmic and lists factors including relevance, prominence, authoritativeness, freshness, usability, location and language. Analytics setup measures activity; it does not control or guarantee inclusion or ranking. [Google News Publisher Center Help]
