Google News clicks are usually identified through an HTTP referrer, while AI-summary clicks may appear as google / organic, the native AI Assistant channel, another referral, or (direct) / (none). The workflow below shows how to separate those cases, validate the data, and measure landing pages and key events without overstating what GA4 can observe.
What GA4 can—and cannot—tell you
GA4 records traffic-source dimensions only when an attribution signal survives the journey to your site. That signal can be an HTTP referrer, campaign parameters such as UTM values, or an inferred source that Google recognizes. If the signal is removed by a redirect, consent setting, browser privacy control, ad blocker, or an app handoff, GA4 may classify the visit as (direct) / (none) or normalize it into another source.

This distinction matters for both Google News and AI summaries. You can report a Google News referral when the browser sends a referrer identifying a Google News surface. You can report an AI Assistant session when GA4’s native rule matches the medium and recognized referrer. But a person may read an AI summary without clicking, and a click from an AI Overview or AI Mode may arrive as ordinary Google organic search. Those influences are not separately observable in standard GA4 reports.
Therefore, treat GA4 as a record of attributable sessions and events, not a complete census of every surface that influenced a visit.

Start in the Traffic acquisition report
- Sign in to the correct GA4 property and select the relevant web data stream.
- Open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
- Use the primary dimension selector and choose Session source / medium.
- Set a date range that includes the publication or promotion period you want to analyze.
- Search the table for
news.google.com, other Google News referrer hostnames you have observed, google / organic, and any AI-platform source values.
Traffic acquisition is session-scoped: it answers where a session began. This is different from user-acquisition reporting, which attributes a user’s first recorded acquisition. Use Traffic acquisition when you want to evaluate the source that brought a particular visit to an article.
Google describes traffic-source dimensions this way: source identifies where traffic originates, medium describes how users arrive, and campaign dimensions identify the marketing effort. In practice, Session source / medium is the fastest diagnostic view because it combines both values in one row.
Which dimensions to add
Source/medium alone is not enough to determine whether a source delivered valuable readers or merely sessions. Customize the report or use an exploration with the following dimensions:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Session source — the platform or host that directed the session.
- Session medium — the traffic type, such as
referral,organic,ai-assistant, or(none). - Landing page + query string — the first page viewed in the session, including query parameters when available.
- Landing page — a cleaner article-level view when query strings are not useful.
- Session campaign and related campaign dimensions — useful for links you control with UTM parameters.
Add metrics such as sessions, engaged sessions, engagement rate, key events, and revenue where those events are implemented. A source with fewer sessions but a higher rate of subscriptions, registrations, or other key events may be more valuable than a high-volume source.
If the landing-page dimension is missing, use the report’s customization controls or create an Exploration. Keep the same source, medium, landing-page, and event definitions in recurring reports so month-to-month comparisons remain consistent.
How to identify Google News traffic
Use the HTTP referrer as the primary signal
Google Publisher Center guidance says: “To differentiate the traffic from Google News and the rest of your traffic, find the HTTP referrer.” In GA4, look at Session source / medium and the landing-page dimensions for hostnames associated with Google News. A row with a Google News hostname and a referral medium is evidence that the click carried a News referrer.
Start by searching for news.google.com. Also record other Google News referrer hostnames that actually appear in your property, because routing can vary between the web experience, app surfaces, and future product changes. Do not hard-code a single hostname as proof that all News traffic has been captured.

Validate the article receiving the click
- Filter the report to the observed Google News source or hostname.
- Add Landing page + query string as the secondary dimension.
- Review which article URLs receive sessions, engaged sessions, and key events.
- Compare the same landing pages with other sources to identify differences in engagement or conversion.
This process distinguishes a News referral from a general Google referral and shows whether the traffic reaches the article you expect. It does not identify impressions or stories that generated no click.
Why some News visits become direct
Google lists several reasons a visit that began as a referral can be reported as (direct) / (none): missing campaign parameters when a campaign relies on them, redirects that strip parameters, and ad blockers or other technologies that prevent attribution data from being passed. Consent controls and app-to-browser transitions can create similar visibility gaps.
For that reason, a rise in direct traffic after a News appearance is not proof that readers typed the URL. Check redirect chains, canonical URLs, consent behavior, and server or CDN logs before drawing a conclusion.
How GA4 classifies AI-related visits
The native AI Assistant channel
GA4’s default channel documentation defines AI Assistant as traffic whose medium is exactly ai-assistant and whose referrer matches Google’s recognized AI Assistant list. When both conditions are met, the default channel group provides a native roll-up instead of requiring you to combine individual source rows manually.
Recommended Free Tools
- In Traffic acquisition, change the primary dimension to Default channel group.
- Look for the AI Assistant row.
- Switch back to Session source / medium to see the platform-level source values behind that row.
- Add the landing-page and key-event dimensions or metrics to evaluate the sessions.
The recognized list can change. Treat the native channel as Google’s current classification rather than a permanent inventory of every AI service.
AI Overviews and AI Mode may look like ordinary organic search
Clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode do not necessarily carry a distinct AI referrer. A current practitioner guide reports that these clicks can appear as google / organic when no separate referrer or explicit tag is passed. In that case, GA4 cannot distinguish an AI-summary click from a conventional Google Search click in the standard source dimensions.
Do not interpret a zero AI Assistant count as proof that no AI summary influenced your site. It may mean that the click was classified as organic search, the referrer was stripped, or the user never clicked after seeing the summary.

Other AI platforms
AI services that send a recognizable referrer may appear as referral traffic or, if they match GA4’s rules, in the AI Assistant channel. Inspect the exact Session source / medium values rather than assuming every AI platform uses the same medium. Keep a dated list of observed source and referrer values so analysts can tell when a classification rule was added or changed.

A verification workflow for trustworthy reporting
1. Confirm measurement before investigating attribution
Open an article landing page in a test session and verify that the GA4 tag fires and that data arrives in the property. If pageviews or sessions are missing, source analysis cannot be meaningful. Check the web data stream, consent implementation, tag configuration, and real-time or DebugView data according to your site’s deployment.
2. Establish a baseline
Record normal levels for google / organic, referral traffic, and (direct) / (none) before analyzing a News placement or AI referral. A baseline helps separate an actual change from ordinary daily variation without inventing a benchmark conversion rate.
3. Search source and medium values
Use the table search in Traffic acquisition for news.google.com, observed News hostnames, google / organic, ai-assistant, and named AI-platform sources. Export the rows if you need to preserve a dated audit trail.
4. Add landing pages
Use Landing page + query string to identify the articles associated with each source. Normalize or group URLs only when you can document the rule; otherwise, query parameters may hide duplicate views of the same article.
5. Add outcome metrics
Compare engaged sessions, key events, and revenue rather than sessions alone. Confirm that the events represent real business outcomes and that their definitions have not changed during the comparison period.
6. Test redirects and canonicalization
Follow a sample link from the suspected source through every redirect to the final canonical URL. Look for a redirect that removes UTM parameters, changes domains without cross-domain measurement, or sends users through an intermediate page that loses the original referrer.

7. Check consent and blocking effects
Test with the consent states your audience uses. A visitor who declines analytics consent may not create a GA4 session, while a browser or extension that blocks referrer data can produce direct or incomplete attribution. Treat the measured sample as the portion for which analytics was permitted and technically able to run.
8. Compare browser analytics with logs when the question requires it
Server logs or CDN referrer data can reveal requests that browser analytics did not label, subject to the same referrer limitations and to your own log-retention and privacy policies. Use this comparison when a known publication, partner, or AI service appears to be sending requests that GA4 does not show.
Using UTM parameters for links you control
Manual UTM tagging is appropriate for newsletters, social posts, partner placements, and other links where you control the destination URL. Google says manual tagging populates source, medium, campaign, and related dimensions.
Adopt one naming convention and document it. For example, decide whether a source is a lowercase platform name, whether the medium describes the channel or the format, and how campaign names encode a date or story. Do not change capitalization or spelling between links for the same initiative; GA4 treats different values as different dimensions.
Use UTMs to identify an explicit campaign, not to relabel organic search or a referrer you do not control. A UTM value can tell GA4 what you declared, but it cannot prove that a user came from a Google News or AI surface unless the tagged link was actually published there and the parameters survived the journey.
Custom channel groups and Explorations
If an AI source is visible in source/medium but is not included in the native AI Assistant channel, create a custom channel group or Exploration using the observed values. A practical rule set can include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Exact medium
ai-assistantfor the native-style classification. - Specific referrer hostnames that your logs or GA4 rows show to be AI platforms.
- Separate rules for
google / organicrather than labeling all Google organic sessions as AI traffic. - A catch-all category for unverified referrals so they are not mistaken for confirmed AI visits.
Document the rule order, source values, medium values, and date created. Version the list whenever you add or remove a platform. Because Google’s recognized AI list and product routing can change, a report built with today’s rules may not reproduce historical classifications unless you preserve the earlier definition.
Best Value
Do not create a custom rule that calls every visit from Google an AI-summary referral. Without a distinct referrer, campaign tag, or other controlled signal, that would convert an unknown into a claim the data cannot support.
Interpreting common findings
“I see news.google.com / referral.”
You have evidence of sessions whose referrer identified that Google News hostname. Report the source, date range, landing pages, and outcomes. Avoid extending the finding to News impressions or to sessions whose referrer was not preserved.
“I see AI Assistant in the default channel group.”
GA4 matched the exact medium and a recognized referrer. Use source/medium to identify the underlying platform and check the landing pages and key events before evaluating quality.
“I see a spike in google / organic after an AI Overview appearance.”
The timing is consistent with increased Google organic traffic, but standard GA4 cannot establish how much came from AI Overviews or AI Mode when those clicks carry no distinct signal. Report it as organic traffic and label any AI connection as unconfirmed.
“The partner says it sent traffic, but GA4 shows direct.”
Inspect redirects, stripped parameters, referrer policy, consent behavior, ad blockers, and app-to-browser transitions. Direct means GA4 had no clear referral source; it does not reliably mean the user entered the URL manually.
“The source appears, but there are no conversions.”
First check that the key event is implemented on the relevant page and that consent allows it to fire. Then verify that the selected date range, attribution scope, and landing-page dimension match the question. A source row without a valid event implementation cannot demonstrate poor traffic quality.
Recommended reporting layout
For a recurring dashboard, keep separate views rather than forcing every visit into one combined number:

(direct) / (none)and other unassigned rows, monitored for changes after campaigns, redirects, or consent updates. - Controlled campaigns: UTM-tagged source, medium, campaign, landing page, and key-event performance.
Include the reporting period, GA4 property, channel-group version, and any hostname or UTM rules used. This metadata prevents a future analyst from treating a custom classification as a permanent GA4 definition.
Privacy and measurement boundaries
Referrer data is technical metadata, not a guarantee that a person saw or trusted a particular summary. A user can copy a URL, open it from a saved tab, block analytics, or arrive through an app that does not pass the original context. Respect consent requirements and your organization’s retention policies when combining GA4 with logs or CDN data.
Do not publish a percentage of traffic or conversions attributed to AI summaries unless your implementation has a defensible signal and a clearly defined denominator. No authoritative figure establishes a universal Google News or AI-summary conversion rate; results depend on audience, article type, placement, device, and attribution coverage.
Quick Recap
A concise decision tree
- Is there a Google News referrer hostname? If yes, report a Google News referral and inspect its landing pages. If no, continue.
- Does the session meet GA4’s AI Assistant rule? If the medium is
ai-assistantand the referrer is recognized, use the AI Assistant channel. If no, continue. - Is the source
google / organicafter an AI-summary exposure? Report it as organic and mark the AI origin as unconfirmed. - Is there a UTM-tagged link you control? Use the declared campaign dimensions, while checking that redirects preserved them.
- Is there no usable signal? Keep the session in direct or unassigned reporting and investigate technical causes rather than guessing the source.
