How to Track ESA’s Hera Mission and Follow Its Science Updates

The most reliable way to follow ESA’s Hera mission is the official Hera mission page. ESA uses it as the public hub for dated mission stories, operational reports, videos, images, background explainers and links to its current social accounts. Check the date on each item, because a planned manoeuvre and a completed manoeuvre are not the same thing.

In the latest dated information covered here, from 13 October 2026, Hera was preparing for braking activity before reaching the Didymos asteroid system. ESA had planned a 93-minute braking burn (BRM-1) for 15 October and an approximately 31-minute burn (BRM-2) for 22 October, while the mission page listed rendezvous for November 2026. Those dates describe the plan available at that timestamp; use the mission hub for confirmation of what actually happened.

Use ESA’s Hera page as your tracking dashboard

Start with ESA’s Hera mission hub rather than a third-party tracker. The page gathers the information needed to follow both operations and science:

  • Dated news stories, including manoeuvre announcements and flight-dynamics explanations.
  • Mission videos and image galleries that provide visual context.
  • Background material and links to the mission’s operations and frequently asked questions.
  • Links to the official social accounts ESA currently associates with Hera.

At the October 2026 snapshot, the latest-story list included a 7 October braking update and a flight-dynamics explainer. Open the newest item first, then work backward only when you need context. A headline can remain visible after an event, so the publication date and wording inside the article matter more than its position on the page.

A simple routine for checking the mission

  1. Open the Hera mission hub and note the date of the newest story.
  2. Read the latest operational item in full, looking for words such as planned, targeting, completed, confirmed or successful.
  3. Compare the announced date with the calendar date shown in the story. If the date has passed but no completion report is available, treat the manoeuvre as unconfirmed.
  4. Use the linked operations, FAQ and science material to understand why the activity matters, not just what the spacecraft is doing.
  5. Check ESA’s linked social accounts for alerts, but use the dated mission page as the authoritative record.

Hera’s status and the dates to watch

Hera launched on 7 October 2024. ESA’s 7 October 2026 operational coverage described the spacecraft preparing to brake relative to the Didymos system. The operations description calls the October activity an impulsive rendezvous sequence followed by orbit insertion; the mission page gives November 2026 as the rendezvous listing. These descriptions refer to different levels of schedule precision, so they should be read together rather than treated as a contradiction.

Milestone Date or duration How to interpret it
Launch 7 October 2024 Completed historical event.
BRM-1 braking burn Planned for 15 October 2026; 93 minutes A scheduled first major braking manoeuvre. In the 13 October information snapshot it was still in the future; check a later ESA report for completion.
BRM-2 braking burn Planned for 22 October 2026; approximately 31 minutes A second scheduled braking burn. The duration is approximate and the event requires post-manoeuvre confirmation.
Additional transition manoeuvres Later in October 2026 Three smaller manoeuvres were described as part of the transition toward arrival.
Rendezvous listing November 2026 The month shown on ESA’s mission page for rendezvous; it is not proof that orbit insertion had already occurred on 13 October.

Braking changes Hera’s relative velocity so the spacecraft can approach and operate around the Didymos binary system. The two large burns and the smaller transition manoeuvres are parts of one arrival sequence, not separate scientific discoveries. A successful burn report should normally be followed by navigation updates explaining the new trajectory or the next planned activity.

How to tell a planned event from a confirmed event

Spaceflight schedules are deliberately published before a manoeuvre so that teams and the public know what is intended. They can change because of navigation results, spacecraft health, communications or weather at a ground station. Read ESA’s verbs literally:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Planned, scheduled or targeted: the activity is an intention for a stated date.
  • Preparing for: the spacecraft and control team are configuring for the activity; the burn has not necessarily started.
  • Executed or performed: the manoeuvre command was sent and the burn took place.
  • Successful or confirmed: ESA has assessed the result and accepted it as meeting its objective.

For the October sequence, do not convert the announced 15 October and 22 October dates into claims of success without a newer ESA report. The same caution applies to the November rendezvous listing: it is a schedule marker until ESA publishes arrival or orbit-insertion confirmation.

What does “How long will Hera take to reach its destination?” mean?

ESA’s FAQ uses that question because readers often want one travel time. In practice, “reach” can mean several milestones: completing the cruise, performing the October braking manoeuvres, entering the planned approach sequence, achieving orbit insertion, or beginning the close-up survey. The dated schedule available on 13 October 2026 placed braking activity in October and listed rendezvous in November. Until ESA reports the relevant event as completed, avoid turning a planned month into an exact elapsed-time claim.

When a later update gives a precise arrival time, record whether it is spacecraft arrival at the system, a first close approach, or formal orbit insertion. Those are operationally different events and may appear in separate stories.

What Hera is going to investigate

NASA’s DART spacecraft deliberately struck Dimorphos in September 2022. Telescopes measured the change in Dimorphos’s orbit, but ESA’s FAQ cites about 10% residual uncertainty in measurements of that altered orbit. That figure is a pre-Hera motivation for a close-up investigation, not a result produced by Hera.

Hera will survey the aftermath in detail and characterize the Didymos–Dimorphos binary system. Its objectives combine planetary-defence science with a demonstration of autonomous operations in an extremely weak-gravity environment.

The impact site and surface shape

Hera’s close observations are intended to determine the shape of Dimorphos after the DART impact and to characterize the impact site. Future updates may discuss ejecta, boulders, craters, surface texture or changes in the small moon’s overall form. These observations help connect the observed orbital change with the physical response of the asteroid.

Mass, gravity and internal structure

Measurements of the binary system’s mass distribution and gravity field will improve estimates of how the two bodies move around one another. They also help scientists infer whether Dimorphos is a loosely assembled rubble pile or has a different internal arrangement. The mission’s navigation performance is part of this work: flying safely near a tiny body tests autonomous guidance where gravity is weak and irregular.

Surface composition and dust

Hera and its small companion spacecraft will examine what the surfaces are made of and how dust behaves around the system. Composition results can distinguish materials exposed by the impact from material already present on the surface.

Implications for planetary-defence modelling

DART demonstrated that an asteroid’s orbit can be altered by an intentional impact. Hera’s measurements are meant to reveal how much momentum was transferred, how the target’s structure affected the response and which physical parameters future deflection models need. Follow-up stories should therefore be read for measured quantities, uncertainty ranges and model assumptions, not just for a single headline number.

Know the spacecraft and its two CubeSats

ESA’s mission page lists 12 instruments or payloads on Hera and two accompanying CubeSats. Their roles divide the investigation into complementary measurements.

Element Primary contribution Updates to watch for
Hera spacecraft Close-up mapping of the binary system, impact aftermath, navigation environment and physical properties. Images, shape models, trajectory and orbit-determination results, and instrument operations.
Juventas CubeSat Radar observations intended to probe Dimorphos’s interior, together with contributions to gravity measurements. Radar deployment or passes, interior-structure interpretations and gravity-field results.
Milani CubeSat Investigation of surface composition and dust. Spectral or compositional measurements, dust observations and surface-material analyses.

The CubeSats are not merely cameras attached to the main spacecraft. Juventas targets the interior and gravity problem, while Milani focuses on composition and dust. Together with Hera’s instruments, they provide the measurements needed to connect the DART impact to the asteroid’s physical response.

Follow updates by science question

Once arrival operations begin, organize ESA’s stories by the question they answer. This prevents a dramatic image or a short status post from being mistaken for a complete scientific result.

1. Has Hera arrived and navigated safely?

Look for trajectory updates, orbit-insertion information, proximity-operation milestones and statements about autonomous navigation. These reports establish where the spacecraft is and how it is operating, but they do not by themselves reveal Dimorphos’s structure.

2. What does the impact site and shape look like?

Look for calibrated images, maps, shape models and descriptions of the post-impact surface. A first image may be preliminary; later products can revise the location or dimensions of features as spacecraft geometry and lighting are understood.

3. What are the mass, gravity and interior?

Look for estimates of mass, density, gravitational parameters and radar observations. Pay attention to uncertainty intervals and whether a value applies to Dimorphos alone or to the Didymos binary system.

5. What changes planetary-defence models?

Look for analyses that combine the measured orbit change with the impact site, mass, shape and internal structure. Those studies are more informative for future deflection planning than an isolated photograph or an uncalibrated early estimate.

Where mission operations happen

Mission control for Hera is at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany. Communications use ESA’s deep-space antennas at Cebreros in Spain, Malargüe in Argentina and New Norcia in Australia. These facilities send commands, receive spacecraft data and support navigation; they are not public viewing stations.

The official pages establish dated ESA news and social channels, but they do not establish a public, real-time Hera telemetry feed or a continuously updating location map. If a website presents a live-looking animation, treat it as a visualization unless ESA identifies it as an official data product. For verified status, return to the dated mission stories.

Use ESA’s official social links carefully

The Hera hub currently links to @operations.esa.int, @esaoperations and @esa_hera. ESA can change which accounts it presents, so use the links on the mission page rather than relying on an old profile bookmark.

Social posts are useful for alerts, images and short explanations. They may omit the qualification found in a full operations report, such as whether a manoeuvre is planned or confirmed. When a post and a longer article appear to differ, compare publication times and use the detailed ESA report for the status wording.

How to read ESA’s future science reports

Early mission updates often describe an observation, while later papers or ESA analyses establish what it means. Classify each report before drawing a conclusion:

  • Observation: an image, spectrum, radar return or navigation measurement has been collected.
  • Reduction: engineers and scientists have calibrated the data and accounted for viewing geometry, instrument effects or spacecraft motion.
  • Interpretation: a team proposes what the measurement says about shape, composition, gravity or internal structure.
  • Implication: the result is applied to impact physics, binary-asteroid formation or planetary-defence modelling.

Also record whether the result is preliminary or final, which body it describes, and the uncertainty attached to the number. A measurement of Dimorphos’s altered orbit is not interchangeable with a measurement of the entire Didymos system, and a preliminary estimate should not be quoted as a settled value.

How to compare conflicting-looking updates

When two ESA items seem different, compare three things before deciding that there is an error. First, check publication time: a short social alert may precede a longer status article. Second, check source type: an operations report can describe a planned command, while a later news item can confirm its result. Third, check the milestone itself: arrival at the binary system, orbit insertion and the start of instrument observations are separate steps.

Use the most specific, latest official wording. Keep the older item in your notes as the original plan, but label it as superseded if a later ESA update changes the date or status. This approach preserves the mission timeline without treating an obsolete schedule as a current fact.

Why a telescope cannot track Hera for you

Hera and the Didymos system are distant spacecraft targets. A consumer telescope cannot provide the operational status, telemetry or reliable close-up detail needed to follow the mission. The useful tracking work is information tracking: dated ESA reports, mission documentation and verified social updates. Images published by ESA are spacecraft or ground-processed products, not something a backyard observer can reproduce as a live view.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Common tracking mistakes to avoid

  • Using a launch date as an arrival date: Hera launched on 7 October 2024, but the mission page’s rendezvous listing is November 2026.
  • Calling a scheduled burn successful: a planned date remains unconfirmed until ESA reports execution and assesses the result.
  • Confusing a binary-system measurement with a Dimorphos measurement: identify the body named in the update.
  • Treating an early image as a finished map: calibration, lighting and navigation solutions can change the interpretation.
  • Assuming a live map is official: the reviewed ESA pages do not establish a public real-time telemetry tracker.
  • Expecting a consumer product to add access: no telescope, accessory or subscription is needed to receive ESA’s official updates.

A practical checklist for every update

  • Write down the publication date and the event date separately.
  • Mark the event as planned, executed or confirmed according to ESA’s wording.
  • Identify whether the update concerns navigation, the impact site, mass and gravity, interior structure, composition, dust or modelling.
  • Record the spacecraft or CubeSat responsible for the measurement.
  • Keep the stated uncertainty and the body being measured with every number.
  • After a scheduled manoeuvre, look for a later ESA status report before calling it successful.
  • For arrival timing, retain both the October braking sequence and the mission page’s November 2026 rendezvous listing until ESA provides a definitive post-event account.

What to expect next

The immediate operational story is the transition from interplanetary cruise to rendezvous with the Didymos system. In the dated information available on 13 October 2026, ESA was preparing for the two major braking burns and three smaller transition manoeuvres. The next useful updates should clarify which burns occurred, how navigation solutions changed and when orbit-insertion activities were completed.

After Hera and its CubeSats begin their close investigation, the emphasis should move from status to measurements: the post-impact shape of Dimorphos, the impact site, gravity and mass, radar evidence about the interior, surface composition, dust and the performance of autonomous low-gravity navigation. Following those categories on ESA’s hub makes it easier to see how individual observations build the mission’s planetary-defence result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a live Hera location tracker?

Not in the official pages covered here. ESA provides dated reports, images, video and operational explanations, but those pages do not establish a public continuously updating telemetry feed or live location map. A third-party animation can be useful for orientation, yet it should not be treated as verified spacecraft status unless ESA identifies its data source. For a reliable answer about Hera’s position or activity, wait for the next dated ESA operations update.

Does Hera have consumer equipment or a viewing service?

No Hera-specific telescope, accessory, book, manual or streaming service is needed to follow the mission. A backyard telescope cannot resolve the spacecraft or reproduce its close-up observations. ESA’s digital mission hub and linked accounts provide the relevant public material directly, so generic astronomy equipment would not improve operational tracking.

How the mission-control network supports updates

ESOC in Darmstadt coordinates flight operations, while the deep-space antennas at Cebreros, Malargüe and New Norcia maintain communications as Earth rotates. A report about a ground-station contact therefore describes communications support, not a public broadcast of raw telemetry. ESA may publish selected status information after engineers check the data, which is why a confirmed result can appear after the physical manoeuvre has ended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the official place to follow Hera?

Use ESA’s Hera mission hub. It links dated stories, operations information, videos, images, background and the social accounts ESA currently presents for the mission. Start with the newest dated item and then open the linked FAQ or operations pages for context.

When did Hera launch?

Hera launched on 7 October 2024. That is a completed historical event; it should not be confused with arrival at the Didymos system, which ESA’s mission page listed for November 2026.

What were BRM-1 and BRM-2?

They were planned braking manoeuvres in the October 2026 arrival sequence. BRM-1 was scheduled for 15 October and described as a 93-minute burn. BRM-2 was scheduled for 22 October and expected to last approximately 31 minutes. Check later ESA reports for execution and success.

Why do ESA pages mention both October and November 2026?

The operations coverage described October braking and transition activity as part of an impulsive rendezvous and orbit-insertion sequence. The mission hub listed November 2026 for rendezvous. The dates describe different schedule levels, so keep both until a post-event ESA account gives the definitive milestone.

What will Hera measure after DART’s impact?

Hera will examine Dimorphos’s post-impact shape and surface, the impact site, the binary system’s mass and gravity, and the properties of the asteroids’ surface and subsurface. It will also test autonomous navigation and close-proximity operations in very weak gravity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What do Juventas and Milani add?

Juventas is intended to use radar to probe Dimorphos’s interior and contribute gravity measurements. Milani is intended to study surface composition and dust. Their observations complement Hera’s own instruments and help connect the DART impact to the asteroid’s physical response.

What does ESA’s 10% figure mean?

ESA’s FAQ cites about 10% residual uncertainty in measurements of Dimorphos’s altered orbit after DART. It is the pre-Hera uncertainty that motivates a close-up investigation, not a result measured by Hera.

Can I watch Hera through a home telescope?

No. A consumer telescope cannot provide mission telemetry or reliable close-up detail of this distant spacecraft target. Follow ESA’s dated mission reports, official images and linked social updates instead.

How can I tell whether a manoeuvre really happened?

Look for ESA wording such as executed, performed, successful or confirmed in a report published after the scheduled date. Planned, targeted and preparing for describe intentions, not completed events.

Where is Hera controlled from?

Mission control is at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany. Communications use deep-space antennas at Cebreros in Spain, Malargüe in Argentina and New Norcia in Australia.

The Bottom Line

Use ESA’s Hera mission page as the authoritative dashboard. As of 13 October 2026, BRM-1 and BRM-2 were future braking plans, while rendezvous was listed for November; neither should be described as completed without a later ESA confirmation. For the science, follow separate threads on navigation, Dimorphos’s impact site and shape, mass and gravity, interior structure, composition, dust and planetary-defence modelling. Hera, Juventas and Milani will supply complementary measurements, and ESA’s dated reports—not a consumer telescope or an unofficial live map—are the dependable way to track them.
