To find how much your crypto is worth in dollars, multiply the quantity of each asset you hold by its current USD price, then add those position values together. Treat the result as an estimate tied to a particular price source and refresh time—not a guaranteed sale price. To estimate unrealized gain or loss, compare a holding’s current value with its assigned cost basis.
Calculate your crypto portfolio value in USD
- List what you own. Record each asset’s name or platform identifier and the quantity held. A ticker alone may be ambiguous when different assets share a symbol.
- Choose a price source and currency. Retrieve a price explicitly quoted in USD, and note the data source and the time it was retrieved. CoinGecko offers current and historical market data through its API.
- Calculate each position. Use
Position value (USD) = quantity held × current price (USD per unit). For example, if you hold 0.25 units and your selected feed reports $40,000 per unit, the estimated position value is $10,000. This is an arithmetic example, not a current market quote. - Add the position values. Use
Total portfolio value (USD) = sum of each position value (USD). Keep the source and refresh timestamp beside the total so you can tell what the figure represents.
Track holdings in a spreadsheet or app
Spreadsheet with a price-data add-on or API
A spreadsheet is useful if you want to see and customize the calculation, combine assets, and maintain your own records. CoinGecko’s Google Sheets guide documents an add-on and API workflow; its Excel guide covers an add-in and formulas. Spreadsheet results may be cached, and requesting more frequent refreshes can use API call credits. Check the displayed refresh time rather than assuming a cell shows a live quote.

Exchange or platform portfolio feature
A platform feature can be convenient for assets already held there. Coinbase says its investment performance feature tracks changes in asset value and unrealized performance. A platform view may not include holdings in other exchanges or wallets, so a portfolio spread across locations may need to be consolidated separately. Custom API tracker
A custom tracker gives you control over supported assets, refresh behavior, and historical records, but you must handle API credentials, rate limits, identifiers, missing data, and updates yourself. CoinGecko describes current and historical market-data access on its API page.

When choosing a method, check whether it covers your assets and networks, reports a USD price and identifies its source, shows a refresh time, supports transaction history or imports, and lets you export records. Also check how it treats transfers, duplicate entries, missing prices, fees, and API limits. The available examples do not establish a neutral head-to-head comparison of portfolio trackers.
Separate portfolio value from profit or loss
Your current portfolio value is the value of the assets you hold now. It is not, by itself, your profit. A simple unrealized gain-or-loss estimate for a holding is current position value − assigned cost basis. CoinGecko’s Excel guide uses holdings value less total invested for a P&L column. The result depends on how you define the cost basis for the holdings that remain.

For a more reliable performance record, track transactions—not just today’s balances. Buys, sells, fees, transfers, rewards, and partial disposals affect quantities and cost basis. A spreadsheet that records only current balances can estimate current value, but cannot reconstruct complete realized performance on its own. CoinGecko’s Excel tracker guide describes a workflow using transaction details and historical prices.

Interpret the number carefully
- It is a time-stamped estimate. Crypto prices can move quickly, and a spreadsheet figure may be cached. The price shown by a tracker is not necessarily the price available when you trade.
- Check what the total includes. A tracker can omit unsupported assets, wallets you have not imported, liabilities, or fees it does not model. Label the total accordingly.
- Do not treat an unrealized estimate as tax owed. Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction and circumstances. A price tracker’s valuation or performance figure does not establish your tax result.
