No single service in the available official material combines every tribunal, court and exchange disclosure. Start by identifying the current forum, then search with the strongest identifier available, save the exact result and date, and reconcile it with the issuer’s disclosure without treating either source as a complete substitute for the other.
What you are actually tracking
A corporate tax dispute can move through several forums. An assessment or demand may lead to an appeal before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), a matter may be filed in a district or taluka court, or a question may be before a High Court or the Supreme Court. A listed company may also describe the dispute in a stock-exchange filing. These are separate records created for different purposes.

- Court or tribunal record: a docket, order, judgment, cause-list entry or case-status result maintained by the relevant judicial or quasi-judicial system.
- Exchange filing: the company’s own disclosure to an exchange, including the status it considers material under its reporting obligations.
- Your monitoring record: a dated log preserving the identifier, forum, status wording, source date and date you checked it.
A status label such as pending, disposed, admitted or adjourned is not, by itself, a ruling on the underlying tax liability. Read the latest order or filing in context, and identify whether the entry describes a hearing date, an interim direction, a procedural adjournment or a final decision.

| Forum or record | Where to search | Identifiers and filters | Extra material to check |
|---|---|---|---|

| District or taluka court | eCourts Services | State, district, court complex and establishment; party name, case number, filing number, advocate or case type; party-name search uses registration year and pending/disposed status and includes a CAPTCHA | The case history and orders available for that establishment |
| High Court | High Court eCourts service | High Court and bench; party, case number, filing number, advocate, act or case type | Separate orders and judgments function and the date-specific cause list |

Build the case identity before searching
Record enough information to distinguish similarly named taxpayers and related appeals. A name-only result is a lead, not proof that you found the right matter.
Capture the core identifiers
- Full assessee or company name, including punctuation and corporate suffix where shown.
- Name of the opposing authority or other party.
- Appeal number, case number, filing number and acknowledgement number, as applicable.
- Filing or registration year.
- ITAT bench, High Court bench, court complex and establishment, or other location shown by the record.
- Assessment year, if the order, appeal or filing states one.
- Any connected appeal, writ, special-leave petition or reference number.
Keep the identifier exactly as displayed. Do not remove leading zeros, change slashes or silently substitute an assessment year for a filing year. If an issuer filing gives only a broad description, use its wording to locate the formal number in the forum record.
How to search an ITAT tax appeal
ITAT’s Case Status page provides several search routes. Use the most specific key you possess and save the parameters used, because an assessee-name match can return multiple matters.
- Open Case Status. Confirm that you are on the official ITAT case-status service and note the access date.
- Select the search route. The page offers “Search by Appeal Number,” “Search by Date of Filing,” “Search by Assessee Name,” and “Search by Acknowledgement Number.” Prefer an appeal or acknowledgement number when it appears in an order or filing.
- Enter the required context. Complete the bench, appeal type and filing-year fields requested by the form. A date-of-filing search should use the date range or date shown in the source document, not the date you happened to discover it.
- Complete the CAPTCHA. A failed or expired CAPTCHA can produce no result without indicating that the case is absent. Reload and repeat the search if necessary.
- Inspect the full result. Compare the assessee, opposing authority, bench, number and year with your case identity. If any element conflicts, mark the result as a possible match rather than merging it into the file.
- Save the evidence. Record the status wording exactly, the order or hearing date if shown, the source page, the search parameters and the date checked. Download or preserve the linked order when the service provides one.
When an ITAT name search is ambiguous
Try the acknowledgement number or appeal number from the company’s filing, then narrow by bench, appeal type and filing year. Search variations of the legal name only when the portal requires it, and retain each variation in your log. Two matters for the same assessee can concern different assessment years or authorities, so a matching name alone does not establish identity.

How to search a district or taluka court record
eCourts Services routes you through the local court structure. The state, district, court complex and establishment determine which docket you are querying.
- Choose the location. Select the state, district, court complex and establishment relevant to the case. An establishment selection that is too broad or incorrect can hide the record.
- Choose a search method. Available routes include party name, case number, filing number, advocate and case type.
- For a party-name search, use the requested year and status. The instructions support partial-name searching and ask for the registration year and whether the case is pending or disposed. Start with a distinctive portion of the name, then test the full name if needed.
- Complete the CAPTCHA and submit. Save the exact spelling, year, pending/disposed selection and location before moving to another query.
- Verify the case detail. Match parties, case type, registration or filing number and court establishment. Open the case history and any available orders rather than relying only on a result-list label.
Local court records can show a different procedural stage from an exchange filing because the court entry may have changed after the company prepared its disclosure. Keep both dates and describe the timing difference.
How to search a High Court matter
High Court eCourts services require you to select the High Court and bench. They provide multiple search keys and additional tools that are particularly useful when a tax dispute has become a writ, reference or appeal.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Select the High Court and bench. Use the bench named in the petition, order or filing. Do not assume that the principal seat and a circuit bench share one result list.
- Search by the strongest available key. The service lists party, case number, filing number, advocate, act and case-type searches. A case number or filing number is usually more discriminating than a broad party name.
- Check the case record. Compare petitioner, respondent, registration or filing year and the tax-related act or case type where shown.
- Open orders and judgments separately. The orders/judgments function is distinct from a basic status search. A status page may show a procedural event while the operative direction appears in an order document.
- Check the date-specific cause list when a hearing is expected. A cause-list entry indicates listing, not the outcome of the hearing. Preserve the date and bench along with any later order.
How to use Supreme Court and combined government case-status routes
The government service listing describes online lookup by case number, petitioner, respondent or advocate and provides daily orders for Supreme Court or High Court matters. Use it as a route to the relevant status and order, then verify the result in the actual case record.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- Search with the complete case number if available; otherwise try petitioner, respondent or advocate.
- Confirm the court, parties and year before associating the result with the company’s tax dispute.
- Review daily orders around the relevant hearing date. A daily order may explain an adjournment or direction that a summary status label does not.
- Save the order date, operative wording and the date you accessed the record. If the route does not expose the requested result, record that limitation instead of inferring that no case exists.
Find the listed company’s exchange filing
For a listed issuer, locate its latest exchange-filed integrated filing and search within the document for the exact table heading “Disclosure of Updates to Ongoing Tax Litigations or Disputes.” This heading is a practical way to find the relevant section even when the filing contains many operational and financial disclosures.
Fields to extract
- Opposing party: the tax authority or other counterparty named by the issuer.
- Initiation date: when the dispute or proceeding began, as reported by the company.
- Previous status: the position stated in the preceding disclosure, if supplied.
- Current status: the issuer’s latest description, copied accurately and without converting it into a legal conclusion.
- Filing period and filing date: both identify when the company made the disclosure; neither is necessarily the date of the latest court event.
Quote status language faithfully. “Matter pending,” “hearing adjourned,” “appeal filed” and “order received” describe different events. If the table omits a case number, retain the issuer’s description and use the opposing party, initiation date and assessment year to locate the formal record.
Reconcile the docket and the issuer disclosure
Do not choose one source as automatically authoritative for every question. A court or tribunal docket is the forum’s procedural record; an exchange filing is the company’s reported update. They may be prepared on different dates, cover different levels of detail or refer to connected proceedings.
| Comparison point | What to compare | How to report it |
|---|---|---|
| Forum and bench | ITAT bench, local establishment, High Court bench or Supreme Court | Name the forum and bench exactly; a different bench can indicate a different matter |
| Identifier and year | Appeal, case, filing or acknowledgement number and filing/registration year | Preserve punctuation and leading zeros; do not merge numbers that only look similar |
| Status and procedural stage | Docket label, latest order, cause-list entry and issuer wording | Distinguish listing, adjournment, interim direction and final disposal |
| Source date and checked date | Date printed on the order or filing and date you accessed the service | Record both; an access date is not an event date |
| Record type | Docket/order versus company exchange filing | Identify who made the statement and what the record is designed to show |
For example, an exchange-hosted filing reports an ITAT matter adjourned sine die because of a pending Supreme Court limitation issue. That wording signals a procedural pause linked to another legal question; it does not establish that the tax dispute was decided or extinguished. The corresponding ITAT or Supreme Court record is needed to explain the current procedural position.

How to write a discrepancy note
Use neutral, dated language: “The ITAT entry checked on 17 October 2026 shows [exact status], while the issuer filing dated [filing date] describes [exact wording]. The records were created on different dates and should not be treated as a contradiction without the intervening order.” If one source does not expose the requested result, say so explicitly and identify the search route and date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Maintain a reproducible monitoring log
A useful log lets another person repeat the lookup without guessing which portal, filter or interpretation you used.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Company/assessee | Legal name exactly as displayed |
| Opposing authority or party | Party name from the order or filing |
| Forum and bench | ITAT bench, court complex/establishment, High Court bench or Supreme Court |
| Identifier | Appeal, case, filing or acknowledgement number |
| Year and assessment year | Filing/registration year and assessment year, each in its own field |
| Search route and parameters | For example, “Search by Assessee Name,” party-name search with registration year, or case-number search |
| Record date | Date on the order, status event, cause list or exchange filing |
| Date checked | Date and time you accessed the service |
| Status wording | Exact text, with a short plain-language note only when necessary |
| Source type | Docket, order, judgment, cause list, daily order or exchange filing |
| Location of evidence | Official service name and the saved page, document or reference in your records |
| Next check | A practical review date based on a hearing, filing cycle or material update |
Keep superseded entries instead of overwriting them. A sequence of dated records shows whether a status changed, whether an order post-dated an exchange filing, and which identifier was used at each step.
Common failure modes and fixes
No result after a name search
Check the forum, establishment, spelling, filing or registration year and pending/disposed filter. Switch to an appeal, case, filing or acknowledgement number. A CAPTCHA failure or an expired session can also return no useful result; repeat the query and record the attempt.
Best Value
Several cases have the same company name
Compare the opposing party, bench, year, assessment year and case type. Keep separate rows in the log until the formal number and parties establish that two entries are connected.
The exchange filing is newer than the order you found
Use both dates. Search the forum for an order or hearing after the date of the older document, then report the sequence rather than declaring one source wrong.
The portal shows a hearing or listing but no outcome
Check the orders or judgments function and the relevant daily order. A cause-list entry proves that a matter was listed, not that the court decided it.
Recommended Free Tools
The issuer says “ongoing” but the docket says “disposed”
Verify identifiers and dates first. The filing may concern a connected appeal, a later proceeding or a disclosure prepared before disposal. If the numbers match, quote both records with their dates and avoid inferring the legal effect until the operative order is reviewed.
A portal interface has changed
Record the live labels and fields presented on the day you search. Portal interfaces and case-status data are volatile; a prior screenshot or saved result is evidence of what was displayed then, not a guarantee of the current status.
Quick Recap
What these records can and cannot establish
- They can identify the forum, parties, case or appeal number, procedural event and the date of a particular record.
- They can show the company’s stated position in an exchange disclosure and how that position changed from a previous filing.
- They cannot, without the underlying order and legal analysis, prove the amount ultimately payable, the merits of the tax claim or the final legal outcome.
- They do not provide a guaranteed real-time, complete or automatically cross-linked view across all courts, ITAT benches and exchanges.
- An issuer-filed status is not an independent judicial finding; attribute it to the company and cross-check it with the forum record.
A practical repeat-check routine
- Start with the latest known document and update the case identity fields.
- Search the current forum using the strongest identifier, then verify the parties, bench and year.
- Open the latest order, judgment, daily order or case-history entry available.
- Search the latest integrated exchange filing for “Disclosure of Updates to Ongoing Tax Litigations or Disputes.”
- Enter both records in the monitoring log, preserving exact status wording, record dates and checked dates.
- Compare forum, identifier, stage and source type; write any difference as a dated source discrepancy.
- Set the next review around the next listed hearing, order date or issuer filing cycle, and repeat the process rather than relying on an old status label.
