Use dated screenshots to record what Google showed for a specific query, location, language, and device—not to claim a single, universal “India ranking.” Keep those conditions consistent between captures, log the pages and search features you actually see, and treat changes as observations rather than explanations of why rankings changed.
What a Google search screenshot can—and cannot—tell you
A screenshot is a record of one search results page under particular conditions at a particular time. It can show which competitor pages appeared, their visible order, and features such as local, image, or video results. It cannot establish a location-independent or permanently stable ranking, nor explain why Google displayed those results.

Google says search relevance can involve factors including a searcher’s location, language, and device, and results can include different features depending on the query. A capture from one setup should therefore be described as that observed results page—not “the India ranking.” See Google’s guide to how Search works and its FAQ on website appearance in Search.
Build a repeatable tracking workflow
1. Fix the query set
Write down the exact searches that matter to your business. Preserve spelling, script, and language. Treat English, Hindi, and other language versions—and transliterations—as separate queries rather than interchangeable versions. Keep the query text identical from one observation to the next.

2. Record the search conditions
For each capture, log the date and time, exact query, Google interface language, device class (such as desktop or mobile), and the location or localization method used. Hold these constant when comparing observations. If you deliberately change one condition—for example, to compare mobile with desktop—label that as a separate series.
For India, avoid treating the country as one uniform search location or language. If a workflow uses a city-specific setting or another localization method, record exactly what it used. Do not assume that a manual setting or an external service perfectly simulates a particular Indian city.
3. Capture enough of the results to audit
Save a full-page screenshot or a sequence of screenshots that preserves the query and enough of the results to identify listing order and visible search features. Keep the original files, use filenames that connect them to your log, and avoid cropping away context needed to interpret the capture. This is a practical record-keeping method, not a Google-prescribed screenshot format.

4. Log observations, not causes
For each capture, note the competitor domain and page as displayed, its observed order, and notable features such as a map or image block. If a page is not visible in the captured portion, say that; do not infer that it is absent from all results. A difference between two captures shows a difference in what was observed, not proof of an algorithm update, a competitor action, or a specific cause.
5. Repeat on a schedule that fits the decision
Choose a cadence based on how often you need to review visibility, then use the same queries and conditions each time. There is no single cadence established by the guidance cited here. When a difference matters, take another capture under the recorded conditions before treating it as a persistent pattern.
Use India-specific language and location carefully
Google’s international-site guidance recommends making country and language versions explicit where appropriate, including separate locale URLs and hreflang annotations. Google also warns that locale-adaptive pages may not all be crawled, indexed, or ranked. These are recommendations for site owners; they do not prove that a particular search setting or rank-tracking service accurately reproduces results for every Indian locale. Read Google’s guidance on multi-regional and multilingual sites and its guidance on locale-adaptive pages.
Rank #3
For your own site, make each target audience and language explicit in your measurement plan. Do not combine observations from different cities, languages, or device classes into one trend line unless you label and analyze those segments separately.

| Source | What it is useful for | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Your saved search screenshots | A dated, auditable record of a particular visible results page and its features. | A universal ranking, complete results beyond what you captured, or the cause of a change. |
| Google Search Console | First-party information about your own verified site’s presence and performance in Google Search. | A complete competitor ranking feed. |
| Third-party rank trackers | Repeated checks at scale, subject to the service’s available location, language, device, and reporting controls. | Google’s internal ranking data or a canonical result for every searcher. |
Google says, “Third-party tools don’t have access to our internal ranking data,” and encourages site owners to use Search Console for information directly from Google Search. Treat third-party competitor metrics as tool observations or estimates, not as Google’s own data. See Google Search Central’s guidance on third-party SEO tools and advice.
When evaluating a tracker, check whether it exposes the location and language used, separates desktop and mobile, and lets you retain dated screenshots or exports. Verify current features and pricing with the vendor; no particular tracker’s terms are established here. For manually capturing a page through an API, ScreenshotNeo is an option: it accepts a URL in one GET request and returns a screenshot or PDF, but a capture of Google results still represents a particular observation, not a universal ranking.

For a direct capture, replace the target URL below with the Google search URL you intend to record. A screenshot API captures that URL; it does not make results location-independent. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/search?q=example+query -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. The results differ between captures
First compare the query text, timestamp, location method, language, and device recorded in your log. If these differ, the captures are not a like-for-like comparison. Even with those settings held constant, a screenshot remains evidence of an observed page at that time; it does not identify the cause of a difference.
Best Value
A competitor is missing from the screenshot
Check whether the capture includes enough of the results page and whether the relevant search feature displaced or separated ordinary listings. Record “not visible in captured portion” when that is all you can establish. A screenshot cannot prove that a competitor never appears for the query.
A page or language variant is not appearing as expected
Separate what you observed in search from what you know about your site’s configuration. For your own site, review whether country and language versions have explicit URLs and appropriate locale signals; locale-adaptive delivery may not expose every variation to Google’s crawling and indexing systems. Google also notes that meeting technical requirements and best practices does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. See Google Search Essentials.

How do I check my competitor’s Google ranking in India?
Search a fixed query under recorded language, location, and device conditions, save the results page, and log the competitor pages and features you can actually see. Repeat with the same setup to compare observations.
Can I track Google search results with screenshots?
Yes. Screenshots can preserve dated examples of visible results for selected queries and settings. They are snapshots, not a universal ranking report or an explanation of ranking changes.
