You can use calorie tracking as a short-term way to notice patterns, but you do not have to count every day—or track calories at all. A paper diary, ordinary phone notes, or package labels may be enough to answer a specific question about your eating habits. If logging starts to bring anxiety, guilt, rigid rules, or distress, stop or switch to notes that do not include calories.
Decide what you want to learn before you start
Choose one practical question for a food record to answer. For example: Are drinks or snacks adding up differently than you expected? Are the portions you usually serve similar to the portions shown on food labels? A record is a tool for noticing patterns, not a grade for how you ate.

Continuous counting is not required. The CDC says, “Counting calories all the time is not necessary, but it may help to know how many calories you need.” Calorie counts and personal needs are estimates, and weight is influenced by factors beyond food records, including sleep, age, genes, medications, medical conditions, and environment. A log cannot explain everything about health or weight change.

| Method | Useful when | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Paper diary | You want a simple record without an app or calorie total. | Note foods, drinks, approximate portions, and relevant context. |
| Phone or computer notes | You already use notes and want a low-friction record. | Keep the format simple; a calorie-counting app is not required. |
| Labels without a running log | You only want to compare a product’s listed serving with what you normally eat. | Check whether the value is listed per 100 g or 100 ml, or per portion, and whether that portion matches yours. |
| Website or app | You specifically want digital logging or totals and can use them without distress. | There is no established best app here for accuracy, privacy, features, or safety. Do not treat its totals as exact. |
Make a brief, useful record
The American Heart Association suggests recording foods and drinks, timing, portions, context, and feelings, then reviewing the diary weekly for patterns. You do not need a perfect record: approximate portions and a short note about where you were or what you were doing can be more useful than logging every detail.

If it helps answer your chosen question, remember items that are easy to overlook: drinks, alcohol, cooking oil or spreads, toppings, and sauces. Leave details out if they add effort without helping you understand a pattern.
Use labels and portion estimates without chasing precision
Calorie information on labels may be shown per 100 g or 100 ml, or per portion. Compare the stated basis with what you actually ate: a manufacturer’s portion may not match your usual serving. Labels can inform an estimate, but they do not make a food log exact.

- Digital kitchen scale with food-safe, BPA-free plastic components
- Stainless steel platform with wide LCD screen
- Weighs up to 11 pounds (2 grams minimum, up to about 5000 grams); displays results in pounds, ounces, grams, fluid ounces, and ml
- Tare button for measuring just the food, minus the container weight
- Battery operated; (2) AAA batteries included
If you are unsure about a usual serving, weighing it once in a while can show how it compares with the label’s serving. The NHS says weighing portions at the start can help with this and, “This isn’t something you have to do forever.” A kitchen scale is optional; familiar household portions and labels may be sufficient. Do not let the measuring process become a rigid rule.

Review for patterns, not a score
At the end of a week, look for a practical observation: perhaps snacks tend to happen in a particular setting, or a drink portion differs from what you assumed. The American Heart Association recommends looking for patterns or triggers and starting with small changes. You can also decide that the record has answered your question and stop.

Know when to stop or get support
Calorie counting can become harmful for some people. The Centre for Clinical Interventions describes possible anxiety, guilt, low mood or shame, rigid or perfectionistic rules, preoccupation with food, difficulty enjoying social experiences, and interference with hunger and fullness cues. Strict limits based on imperfect estimates may also risk inadequate energy or nutrients. These are potential risks, not experiences every person will have.
If tracking is increasing distress or fixation, stop, simplify, or switch to notes without calorie numbers. The Centre for Clinical Interventions suggests steps such as deleting tracking apps or setting screen limits to reduce calorie counting. Seek support from a qualified health professional if you have current symptoms or an eating-disorder history.
