Track four separate measurements, not one: ETF net flows for creations and redemptions, on-chain ETF-attributed flows for observed issuer-wallet transfers, exchange netflow for Bitcoin moved into or out of labeled exchange addresses, and spot volume for executed trades. They use different inputs, clocks, units and revision rules, so a chart cannot be interpreted correctly until its provider definition and coverage are recorded.
What “inflow” means in each dataset
The word inflow hides several different events. An ETF flow can describe net capital entering a fund through creations, less redemptions. An on-chain attribution series can describe Bitcoin transfers associated with an issuer’s wallets. An exchange inflow is a blockchain transfer into addresses labeled as belonging to an exchange. Trading volume is the value or quantity of market executions during a specified interval. These are not interchangeable observations.

1. Spot Bitcoin ETF net flows
What the number represents
An ETF net-flow series attempts to measure the net addition or removal of capital, shares or Bitcoin from the covered spot funds over a period. A positive value means the selected methodology reports more creations or additions than redemptions or removals for that universe and interval. A negative value means the reverse. It is not the turnover of ETF shares in the secondary market.
Providers may calculate native-Bitcoin flow from shares outstanding and the Bitcoin amount in creation or redemption baskets when those inputs are available. If they are not, a provider may infer flow from the difference between successive reported balance observations. Those methods can produce different results even when the chart labels both series “ETF BTC flow.” Record the method with the value.

Why USD and BTC displays differ
A USD figure is not a second independent flow. It is a BTC estimate converted with a selected Bitcoin price and timestamp. Glassnode’s documented US spot ETF metric converts native net flow with its closing USD exchange rate at 16:00 New York time. Newhedge documents a BTC series converted at that day’s Bitcoin reference price as well as daily USD creation and redemption flows. Because the reference price and timestamp differ, two providers can show different USD totals for an otherwise similar BTC estimate.
Check the fund universe
Coverage is part of the definition. Glassnode’s described US universe includes IBIT, FBTC, GBTC, BTC (the Grayscale Mini Trust), ARKB, BITB, HODL, BRRR, BTCO, EZBC and BTCW. A tracker that omits a product, includes a newly launched product, or covers a different country is not measuring the same total. Write the included tickers beside the chart rather than assuming “US spot ETF flow” is universal.
2. On-chain ETF-attributed flows
How attribution works
An on-chain attribution series counts Bitcoin movements that a data provider associates with an ETF issuer or its wallets. Newhedge defines its BTC measure as daily net BTC into (positive) or out of (negative) the issuer’s US spot Bitcoin ETF observed on-chain. Its documented labels use a 00:00 UTC timestamp for each calendar day and cover US spot Bitcoin ETFs.

Methodology changes matter
Newhedge records a methodology version dated September 15, 2026, when it rebuilt the historical on-chain ETF-flow series from a new attribution source. Older values can therefore differ from earlier publications. If you backtest signals, retain the methodology version and a dated data snapshot; otherwise a later history rebuild can silently change past observations.
3. Exchange netflow: a transfer balance, not a trade balance
The calculation
Exchange netflow is:
exchange inflow − exchange outflow
Inflow is Bitcoin transferred to addresses labeled as belonging to an exchange. Outflow is Bitcoin transferred away from those labeled addresses. A positive result means more BTC entered the labeled address set than left it during the measurement window. A negative result means more left than entered.

What an exchange transfer can be
- A customer deposit before any trade occurs.
- A customer withdrawal after a trade or for long-term custody.
- A transfer between wallets controlled by the same exchange.
- A custody, operational or security movement.
- A transaction involving an address that has not yet been correctly labeled.
Consequently, a large positive netflow is not proof that customers sold Bitcoin, and a large outflow is not proof that customers bought it. It is also not the same as the total change in an exchange’s holdings: unlabeled addresses, internal reshuffles and address changes can affect the observed series.
Address labels and revisions
Glassnode says its exchange metrics use labeled exchange addresses and data-science methods. Labels can be updated when an exchange changes addresses or when new attribution evidence appears, and recent values may fluctuate. Its exchange-transparency notice describes these metrics as on-chain only and excludes off-chain exchange spot and futures volume. Treat a sudden change as a data-attribution event to investigate, not as a confirmed market trade.
4. Spot trading volume is executed market activity
Spot volume measures completed market trades over a stated interval, venue set and currency scope. Glassnode defines its spot-volume measure as total trading volume of the native asset against USD-related currencies aggregated over the previous 24 hours. “Volume” therefore depends on which venues, pairs, currencies and time window the provider includes.
A trade can occur entirely inside an exchange’s internal ledger without producing a blockchain transfer. Conversely, a blockchain transfer can occur without a trade. That is why exchange netflow and spot volume should have separate chart axes and separate labels. Do not add them together, divide one by the other without a clearly defined purpose, or call either one a proxy for the other.
How to build a reliable tracking routine
Step 1: Write the question before opening a chart
- Use an ETF net-flow series when you want estimated net creations and redemptions or changes in covered fund holdings.
- Use an on-chain ETF-attribution series when you want observed Bitcoin movements associated with issuer wallets.
- Use exchange inflow, outflow or netflow when you want transfers involving labeled exchange addresses.
- Use spot volume when you want executed market activity during a defined interval.
If your question contains both “ETF” and “exchange,” decide which side you are measuring. ETF flow does not become exchange netflow merely because an ETF’s custodian uses an exchange, and an exchange deposit does not become an ETF creation merely because the timing is similar.

Beside every chart, record the provider, exact series name, calculation description and retrieval time. Note whether the source uses shares and basket amounts, successive balance observations, on-chain wallet attribution, labeled-address transfers or executed trades. A short data dictionary prevents a later spreadsheet from combining unlike “flow” columns.

Step 3: Confirm coverage and units
- For ETF data, list every included ticker and country or market.
- For exchange data, list the exchanges and address labels included; do not assume the total covers every venue.
- For volume, list included trading pairs, currencies and venues.
- Mark each value as native BTC, USD or another unit.
When a BTC series is converted to USD, add the price source and conversion timestamp to the same row or chart annotation. A USD value without that information is incomplete.
Step 4: Align clocks and trading calendars
Bitcoin trades continuously, while ETF-market data generally follows US trading sessions. A bar labeled with the same calendar date can represent different elapsed periods. Newhedge’s documented on-chain ETF series labels daily observations at 00:00 UTC. Glassnode documents 16:00 New York time for the USD conversion in its ETF metric. Neither convention should be silently applied to another provider.
- Convert every timestamp to an explicitly named zone, such as UTC or America/New_York.
- Mark whether the interval is a US trading day, a UTC calendar day or a rolling 24-hour period.
- Check the provider’s publication or update time before comparing the latest bar.
- Do not align bars by the displayed date alone when one series is session-based and another is calendar-based.
Step 5: Identify preliminary data and revisions
Newhedge says its standard daily ETF-flow series can revise the latest seven US trading days. Its on-chain documentation records the September 15, 2026 historical rebuild described above. Glassnode notes that exchange labels and recent exchange data can change. For a live dashboard, show a “preliminary” indicator where applicable. For a backtest, preserve downloaded snapshots or choose a point-in-time dataset so later revisions do not leak into an earlier decision.

Step 6: Chart the series independently
Use separate panels or clearly separated axes for ETF net flow, on-chain ETF attribution, exchange netflow and spot volume. Keep BTC and USD on different axes unless one is explicitly converted and labeled. A zero line is useful for net measures: it distinguishes net additions from net removals without implying that gross inflow or gross outflow was small.
Step 7: Add a restrained interpretation note
For each observation, state only what the definition supports: “The selected ETF-flow method reports a net addition for its covered products and period,” or “More BTC entered than left the provider’s labeled exchange addresses during this window.” Do not add an unsupported claim about investor intent, future price direction or a completed sale.
How to compare two providers without creating a false divergence

Glassnode states that its US spot ETF metric uses public information obtained directly from issuers. It calculates flow from shares outstanding and basket crypto amounts when available and otherwise from balance differences, then converts native flow to USD at the documented 16:00 New York closing exchange rate. That is one provider’s methodology, not a universal definition of ETF flow.

Common mistakes and the correction for each
Calling ETF share turnover “ETF inflows”
Secondary-market ETF shares can trade many times while the fund experiences no new creation. Use turnover or trading volume for those executions and net flow for creations, redemptions or the provider’s stated holding-change estimate.

Calling an exchange deposit a sale
A deposit is a transfer to a labeled address. It may precede a sale, remain idle, move internally or belong to a custodian. Report the transfer first; treat a sale as a separate, unproven hypothesis.
Treating netflow as all exchange-held Bitcoin changes
Netflow reflects the addresses and labels in the dataset. Internal wallet reshuffles, newly discovered addresses and transfers outside the tracked label set can make observed netflow differ from the exchange’s complete balance change.
Equating on-chain ETF attribution with fund accounting
Issuer-wallet movements are evidence of attributed blockchain transfers. They do not necessarily include every creation or redemption settled through other parties, custodians or off-chain records.
Mixing preliminary and revised bars
A current bar can be provisional while older bars have been rebuilt. Keep the observation date, retrieval date and methodology version together, especially when evaluating a signal over time.

For each downloaded observation, store these fields in a spreadsheet or database:
- Provider and series: the exact published name.
- Definition: accounting estimate, balance difference, on-chain attribution, labeled-address transfer or executed trade.
- Universe: ETF tickers, exchanges, wallets, pairs and currencies.
- Value and unit: native BTC, USD or another unit.
- Valuation: price source and conversion timestamp, if applicable.
- Interval: US session, UTC day or rolling 24 hours.
- Publication status: preliminary, revised or final, if the provider supplies one.
- Methodology version and retrieval time: essential when history can be rebuilt.
This record makes a provider comparison auditable: a disagreement can be traced to coverage, timing, conversion, attribution or revision policy instead of being mislabeled as a market contradiction.
How to read a combined chart responsibly
Suppose an ETF-flow line is positive, exchange netflow is also positive and spot volume rises. The defensible description is that the selected ETF methodology reports net additions, more BTC moved into the tracked exchange addresses than out during its interval, and more trades were executed within the volume definition. The chart does not establish that ETF buyers deposited coins to sell, that exchange deposits were sold, or that the three events involved the same coins or participants.
The reverse combination is equally non-diagnostic. A negative exchange netflow alongside high spot volume can occur when traders withdraw coins after trading, when custody is reorganized, or when the tracked labels change. A positive ETF estimate with little on-chain ETF-attributed movement can reflect the settlement route, timing mismatch or the fact that one series is accounting-derived while the other observes only identified wallets.

Bottom line for daily monitoring
Start with the event you want to observe. Choose ETF net flow for estimated creations and redemptions, on-chain ETF attribution for identified issuer-wallet movements, exchange netflow for transfers to and from labeled exchange addresses, and spot volume for completed trades. Keep each series’ definition, coverage, unit, conversion time, clock and revision policy beside the data. That discipline prevents the most common error in Bitcoin-flow analysis: treating a transfer, a fund-accounting estimate and a market execution as if they were the same inflow.
