1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe reliable way to track beauty conversations is to build a listening system around the names people actually use, then verify what each platform and data source can see. Combine brand, product, shade, handle and hashtag variants with recommendation terms; collect the original post and its context; review video speech and on-screen text as well as captions; and compare results on fixed definitions and time windows. Treat every count as observed coverage, not a census of all beauty discussion.
What you are measuring
A brand-mention program answers more than “How many times was the name posted?” It can show whether people are discussing a company, asking how to use a product, recommending a shade to friends, reviewing a launch, or creating content that merits a response or creator relationship.

Social listening is the process of collecting public online conversations that match defined terms and turning them into decisions. For a beauty team, the useful outputs usually fall into six separate jobs:
Recommended Free Tools
- Brand health: identify praise, complaints, confusion and changes in conversation.
- Product feedback: find recurring questions about wear, ingredients, shades, packaging or results.
- Recommendation discovery: locate people advising others to try a product, including advice spoken in videos.
- Campaign tracking: measure activity around a launch, event, creator brief or campaign hashtag.
- Competitor comparison: compare a defined set of brands using the same rules and period.
- Creator prospecting: find creators already discussing a product rather than starting with a completely cold list.
Keep those purposes in separate alert groups or saved queries. If you change a product query while also changing the date range, you can no longer tell whether a trend came from consumer interest or from your configuration.

Step 1: Define the decision and the reporting unit
Choose the decision first
Write one sentence describing what a result will change. For example: “Every week we will identify unanswered product questions,” or “After the launch, we will find creators making unsolicited recommendations.” This prevents a large pile of mentions with no owner or action.
Define what counts as a mention
Decide whether you are counting a public post, a comment, a reply, a video, a Story, a transcript match, an account tag or a hashtag use. A single post can contain several matching terms, but it should normally count once in volume reporting. Store the individual matches separately so you can audit why it was included.
Fix the comparison window
Use a stated period such as seven days, a calendar month or the 30 days surrounding a launch. Keep the same window when comparing brands. A source that only supplies recent history cannot be compared directly with a source that has years of archived data without explaining the difference.
Step 2: Build a beauty-specific query dictionary
Names, lines and shades
Start with the official brand name, every relevant product name, product-line names and shade names. Include abbreviations that customers use in comments and forums. If a product is commonly identified by a number or a short nickname, add that form only after checking that it does not create excessive unrelated matches.
Handles and hashtags
Add official account handles and campaign hashtags, plus common community hashtags that regularly accompany recommendations. Keep owned-account monitoring separate from broad keyword monitoring: a handle mention in a post is a different signal from a post that merely contains a product name.
Spelling, spacing and punctuation variants
Normalize spacing and spelling variants, including joined words, hyphenation, repeated letters and frequent misspellings. Beauty product names often appear without punctuation or with shade descriptors moved before the product name. Record each variant in the dictionary so a later analyst can reproduce the query.
Recommendation and review language
Add verbs and phrases that signal advice or evaluation, such as “try this,” “my favorite,” “repurchase,” “dupe,” “worth it,” “for sensitive skin,” “what should I buy,” “routine,” “review,” and “shade match.” These terms are filters for interpretation, not proof that a post is a recommendation. A reviewer can use “not worth it,” and a question can contain the product name without endorsing it.

Common-word brand names, names shared with people or places, and short product terms can produce large numbers of irrelevant matches. Inspect an initial sample, list recurring unrelated uses, and add exclusion terms or manual review rules. Do not silently remove ambiguous matches from a historical series; label the decision and apply it consistently.

Step 3: Map each platform and content surface
“Cross-platform” describes your objective, not a guarantee that one tool sees every surface. Before collecting data, make a coverage map that records the platform, source type, history, ranking rules and content formats available.
| Source or documented capability | What it can expose | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok for Business Mentions API | Eligible public posts that explicitly mention a business handle in the caption | Posts must be from an age-eligible user, published within the previous 90 days, and among the top 1,000 most-liked posts that mention the handle. TikTok advises waiting 24 hours after authorization before pulling data. |
| Brandwatch Instagram hashtag source | Public Instagram posts and media using a hashtag | Instagram Stories are excluded for this source. |
| Brandwatch owned TikTok tracking | Handle mentions in videos, comments or replies for an owned TikTok account | The documented mention metrics cover the prior 90 days. |
| Brandwatch Threads brand-mention source | Mentions for a connected owned account | The documented history is 14 days. |
| Mention YouTube discovery | Videos whose title or description matches a query | No historical data is supplied; collection starts after an alert is created. Spoken recommendations that never appear in the title or description may be missed. |
| Meltwater analytics | Analytics catalogues sources including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Reddit | Source support varies by individual metric, so verify the exact source-and-metric combination. |
| HypeAuditor listening | Instagram and TikTok listening for specified accounts or hashtags | Documentation states capacity of up to 5,000 profiles over a maximum 90-day period; current plan limits should be checked. |
These are documented capabilities of the named products, not universal platform guarantees. A vendor’s list of supported channels does not establish that it indexes comments, Stories, captions, transcripts and on-screen text equally. Record the exact source configuration beside every report.
Step 4: Collect an auditable record
Preserve enough context for another person to decide whether a match is real. At minimum, store:
- platform and source type;
- the original post URL;
- author or creator name and account;
- publication timestamp and collection timestamp;
- the exact term or handle that matched;
- content format, such as caption, comment, video, transcript or on-screen text;
- a short classification such as recommendation, review, question, complaint, praise, campaign or unrelated match;
- engagement values supplied by the source, with the collection time;
- the query version and inclusion or exclusion rule used.
Keep the original post available for human review. Automated transcription, sentiment labels and summaries can misread a shade name, sarcasm, a negation or a product shown briefly on screen. If a post is deleted or becomes private, retain the fact that it was observed and mark the link as unavailable rather than replacing it with an unverified copy.
Step 5: Detect recommendations in short-form video
Captions and hashtags are only one layer of beauty video. A creator may say the product name, display its packaging, place the name in on-screen text or mention it in a routine without writing it in the caption. A methodology described by Syncly for beauty short-form content counts captions, hashtags, speech transcripts, on-screen text and AI-generated video summaries. That description explains one vendor’s measurement method; it does not prove that every listening system indexes those surfaces.
A practical review sequence
- Run the text query: collect caption, hashtag and visible account matches.
- Check available transcripts: search spoken words for product, shade and recommendation terms.
- Inspect the video: confirm that the product shown or named is the intended item, especially when packaging resembles another line.
- Classify the advice: distinguish an endorsement, a comparison, a warning, a question and a neutral demonstration.
- Record confidence: mark whether the match came from written text, speech, on-screen text or human confirmation.
Do not infer endorsement from visibility alone. A “products I would not buy again” video is a product mention, but it should not enter a positive recommendation count.
Step 6: Use platform-native tools when a full system is unnecessary
A small team can begin with native search, saved searches, hashtag pages, account notifications and a shared evidence sheet. This approach can be useful for a narrow campaign or a few products, but it will not create uniform cross-platform coverage. Manual collection also requires a schedule, duplicate checking and a clear handoff for review.
For an API-based workflow, the same logic still applies: authenticate the source, submit a documented query, store returned IDs and URLs, capture the retrieval time, and apply your own classification and deduplication rules. The API does not remove platform eligibility, ranking, retention or content-surface restrictions. TikTok’s Mentions API, for example, is limited to qualifying public posts and a 90-day lookback rather than all TikTok product conversation.

Step 7: Analyze volume, direction and meaning
Report volume with its denominator and coverage definition. A useful comparison includes:
| Axis | How to apply it |
|---|---|
| Platform and format | Separate posts, comments, videos, captions, transcripts, Stories and other available surfaces. |
| Time window | Use identical start and end dates for the brands or campaigns being compared. |
| Query and inclusion rules | Publish the terms, variants, exclusions and version number used. |
| Volume and direction | Show observed mention count and change versus the preceding equivalent window. |
| Creator or source | Identify accounts generating repeated discussion and separate owned accounts from independent creators. |
| Engagement | Use likes, comments, shares or views only when the source supplies them, and retain the measurement date. |
| Topic and sentiment | Code recurring subjects and sentiment; show the rules or human-review process behind the labels. |
Document query edits, newly connected sources and changes in platform access. A sudden jump after adding transcript indexing is a measurement change as well as a possible audience change. Keep a change log so the two effects are not confused.
Separate attention from prevalence
High engagement can come from a small number of posts, while a large mention count can consist of low-reach comments. Report both where possible. Do not turn mention volume into sales, market share or the proportion of all consumers. The data represents what the selected sources and rules exposed.
Use sentiment carefully
Sentiment is most useful for triage and trend detection. Beauty language includes irony, mixed reviews and context-dependent words such as “strong,” “drying” or “light.” Sample the underlying posts before escalating a sentiment change, and preserve separate labels for recommendation, complaint and question rather than collapsing every non-neutral post into one score.
Step 8: Compare brands without creating a misleading score
For a brand-versus-brand report, disclose the category panel, selected brands, platforms, query rules and period. A vendor-defined example from Syncly measures the share of short-form beauty videos associated with a panel of 10 brands in each of skincare, makeup, hair and fragrance. Its index uses a 0–100 score and monthly reporting; the first edition covered September 2026. That score is a proprietary methodology, not an industry-wide benchmark. Use it only with its stated panel and definitions.
Do not compare one brand’s broad product dictionary with another brand’s single flagship term. Normalize the number of products, spelling variants, source coverage and time window, then show raw observed counts alongside any normalized share.
Step 9: Turn findings into action
Customer and community response
Route repeated usage questions to updated education, shade guidance or support responses. Prioritize questions that appear across several creators or platforms rather than reacting to one isolated post.
Product and packaging feedback
Group recurring praise and concerns by product, shade, skin or hair need and usage context. Include representative links so product teams can review the original language and visual evidence.

Creator outreach
Use repeated, authentic product discussion to build a prospect list. Check that the creator’s audience and content fit your brief, and distinguish an organic mention from a paid placement or an affiliate disclosure. Existing mentions are a discovery signal, not proof of reach, conversion or future interest.
Campaign optimization
Compare the campaign window with a pre-campaign baseline using the same query and source rules. Report which formats and creators generated recommendations, not only how many posts used the campaign hashtag.

What the numbers can and cannot tell you
Operational limits matter as much as the dashboard. TikTok’s documented Mentions API looks back up to 90 days, requires a public eligible post that explicitly mentions the business handle in its caption, restricts discovery to the top 1,000 most-liked qualifying posts, and calls for a 24-hour wait after authorization. Those conditions make the result a ranked subset of handle mentions, not all TikTok recommendations.
Brandwatch’s documented Instagram hashtag source excludes Stories; its owned TikTok mention metrics cover the prior 90 days; and its Threads brand-mention source documents 14 days of history for a connected account. Mention’s YouTube discovery starts after an alert is created and matches titles or descriptions, so a spoken-only recommendation may not appear. Meltwater lists many networks but varies support by metric. HypeAuditor describes up to 5,000 profiles over a maximum 90-day period, subject to the current plan. State these constraints in plain language whenever a result is shared outside the analytics team.
No independent market statistic is established by these operational figures. They describe collection capacity and methodology, not the size of the beauty market or the percentage of consumers making recommendations.

Choosing between a manual workflow and listening software
Manual monitoring is reasonable when you have a small product set, a short campaign and staff who can review original posts. It becomes difficult when you need consistent history, several languages, transcript analysis, many creators or repeatable comparisons.
Listening and creator-discovery software can centralize queries, source links, classifications, analytics and creator lists. Evaluate a system by asking:
- Which platforms and specific content surfaces are included?
- How far back does each source go, and are results ranked or sampled?
- Does it index speech, on-screen text, comments and replies, or only captions and titles?
- Can you export original URLs, matched terms and query versions?
- How are sentiment, topics and recommendation labels generated and corrected?
- What profile, history and alert limits apply to your plan?
A tool is useful only when its coverage and definitions match the decision you are making. A smaller, transparent dataset is preferable to a larger count whose source rules nobody can explain.
Bottom line for a dependable beauty listening program
Start with a versioned dictionary of names, handles, hashtags, spelling variants and recommendation language. Map each platform’s actual surfaces and history before comparing counts. Preserve original links and context, inspect video speech and on-screen text, adjudicate false positives, and report volume with its source and time-window limits. Use the resulting patterns to answer customers, improve education, evaluate campaigns and find relevant creators—without presenting observed mentions as a complete measure of consumer demand.
