How to track Arctic sea ice extent and thickness using reliable public data

Use two complementary data streams rather than one all-purpose number: the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) Sea Ice Index for consistently processed Arctic extent and concentration since 1979, and satellite altimetry products for thickness. Download the versioned files, record their metadata and access date, keep extent separate from fractional area, and use monthly averages for trend analysis. Daily extent is better for monitoring short-term variability; thickness products require additional assumptions about snow, ice and seawater and are usually seasonal or sampled along tracks.

The workflow below takes you from an official download to a reproducible map, chart or statistic without treating a concentration threshold as a direct measurement of ice volume.

Start by defining the quantity you need

“Sea ice” is not one interchangeable measurement. Extent, area and thickness answer different questions and come from different retrieval methods. Decide which quantity your question requires before downloading a file.

Quantity What it means Typical public product Best use
Extent The sum of grid-cell areas whose ice concentration is greater than 15 percent. NSIDC Sea Ice Index daily or monthly Arctic files. Consistent monitoring and long-term seasonal comparisons.
Area The sum of each cell’s area multiplied by its fractional ice concentration. Concentration grids from the Sea Ice Index or another documented algorithm. Estimating the actual ice-covered surface, including partial coverage.
Thickness Vertical ice thickness inferred from freeboard or height together with snow, ice and seawater assumptions. CryoSat-2 Level-4, ICESat-2 freeboard/height products, and combined products. Understanding ice volume, thickness distribution and structural change.

A cell with 16 percent concentration contributes its entire grid-cell area to extent, but only 0.16 of that area to area. Confusing those definitions can create an apparently precise but physically incorrect result.

Use the NSIDC Sea Ice Index for extent

The Sea Ice Index is the canonical public record for consistently processed Arctic extent and concentration from 1979 onward. Its operational rule counts a grid cell when concentration is greater than 15 percent; exactly 15 percent does not satisfy a strict greater-than test. The index documentation also describes how the concentration algorithm, grid and treatment of regions such as the pole hole are handled, so those details belong in your methods record.

NSIDC describes the monthly Sea Ice Index as “a quick look at Arctic-wide changes in sea ice.” Monthly files are therefore useful for a stable trend line, while the daily record is suited to current conditions and short-lived weather-driven swings.

Download the official files

  1. Open the current NSIDC Sea Ice Index page.
  2. Choose the Arctic or Northern Hemisphere section, then select Daily or Monthly extent.
  3. Follow the page’s archive link to the Northern Hemisphere CSV or XLS file. Keep the downloaded file unchanged as your raw input.
  4. Record the product name, version or revision shown on the page, the exact file name, the date and time you accessed it, the units, the grid description and any notes about missing values or pole-hole treatment.
  5. Copy the documentation text that defines the concentration threshold into your project README so a later analyst can reproduce the classification.

Do not silently replace an archived file with a newer revision. A revised algorithm or reprocessed history can change past values while leaving the date labels looking identical.

Interpret the columns before calculating

Daily and monthly tabular files commonly contain a date, an extent value and sometimes an area or concentration-related field. Read the header and documentation rather than assuming a column’s meaning from its name. Confirm whether the value is reported in square kilometres, millions of square kilometres, or another unit, and convert only after documenting the original unit.

For an extent series, preserve the published value and its definition. Do not multiply an extent value by an average concentration to “correct” it; that would mix two different measures. To calculate area, use a documented concentration grid and cell areas, not the extent column.

Calculate extent and area without mixing the definitions

Extent from a concentration grid

When you have gridded concentration rather than a precomputed index, apply the documented strict threshold to every valid cell:

extent = sum(cell_area where concentration > 0.15)

Use the grid’s supplied cell-area information or an equal-area projection. Mask land, invalid cells and the documented pole-hole region exactly as the product instructions specify. A threshold test performed on a latitude-longitude grid without area weighting can bias the result because cell areas shrink toward the pole.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Area from the same grid

Area retains the fractional concentration:

ice_area = sum(cell_area * concentration for valid ocean cells)

Concentration must be represented as a fraction between 0 and 1 for this expression; divide percentage values by 100 first. Keep the original concentration units in your metadata and state the conversion in code or in the README.

Why the two curves diverge

During freeze-up and melt, many cells sit between zero and 100 percent concentration. Extent can remain high because any cell above the threshold counts fully, while area falls as the ice becomes more open. A paper that labels the first curve “area” or the second “extent” is answering a different question than its caption suggests.

Choose a thickness product that matches the question

Satellite thickness is an inference, not a direct photograph of the ice column. Radar or laser instruments measure freeboard or surface height; a retrieval then uses snow depth, snow density, ice density, seawater density and hydrostatic assumptions to estimate thickness. Different products can therefore disagree even when they observe the same region.

Product family What it provides Sampling and coverage stated by NSIDC Important qualification
CryoSat-2 Level-4 Version 1 Gridded sea-ice thickness and related fields. 25 km grid with 30-day averages; coverage from 20 September 2010 through 15 May 2025, mainly September–May. Seasonal, averaged estimates; it is not a daily, all-year thickness record.
ICESat-2 standard products Along-track sea-ice height and type, freeboard, and gridded daily and monthly freeboard at 25 km × 25 km. Along-track sampling plus gridded products hosted at NSIDC. Freeboard or height is not automatically a thickness value; use the product’s stated retrieval and assumptions.
Combined ICESat-2/CryoSat-2 monthly product Monthly snow-depth and thickness estimates. Released by NSIDC in 2025. Combining sensors adds assumptions about snow and ice properties; cite the specific release.

The CryoSat-2 dates are coverage dates for the Version 1 product, not a promise that every day in that interval has an independent observation. Its 30-day averaging is part of the measurement definition.

Download and inspect thickness data

  1. Create a free NASA Earthdata account if the chosen collection requires authentication.
  2. From NSIDC, select the CryoSat-2 Level-4 collection, an ICESat-2 standard collection, or the 2025 combined monthly collection that matches your question.
  3. Download the NetCDF files and retain the collection name, version, file name and access date. Keep raw files separate from processed outputs.
  4. Open the NetCDF metadata before computing a mean. Identify the thickness, freeboard or height variable; its units; scale and offset; fill value; valid range; time coordinate; spatial dimensions; and quality flags.
  5. Check whether the file is along-track, daily gridded, monthly gridded or a 30-day average. Do not aggregate an along-track product as if it were an equal-area grid.
  6. Apply the supplied quality mask and document every filter. If you remove shallow, coastal or low-confidence cells, record the threshold and the reason.

A metadata-first inspection prevents a common error: treating a variable named “height” or “freeboard” as metres of ice. A derived thickness field should identify its assumptions; if the file reports only freeboard, label your output freeboard unless you perform and document a separate thickness conversion.

Reproduce a statistic with Python and xarray

The NSIDC Data Cookbook documents an xarray access pattern and Earthdata collection discovery. A minimal local workflow is:

import xarray as xr

raw = xr.open_dataset("your_downloaded_file.nc")
print(raw)
print(raw.attrs)
for name, variable in raw.data_vars.items():
    print(name, variable.attrs)

# After identifying the documented variable and quality mask:
selected = raw["documented_variable"].where(raw["quality_flag"] == 1)
monthly_mean = selected.mean(dim="time", skipna=True)

Replace the placeholder names with the exact names printed by the file; do not assume that two collections use the same variable or flag names. Save the script, the environment or package versions, and the metadata summary beside the output. For a regional statistic, use the product’s cell-area variable or an equal-area grid before averaging; an unweighted mean of latitude-longitude cells gives more influence to high-latitude cells.

Keep the grid, projection and units explicit

For maps and spatial joins, retain the documented WGS 84 / NSIDC Sea Ice Polar Stereographic North grid where it applies. This is EPSG:3413. Do not reproject a file merely to make it display; reprojecting can interpolate concentration or thickness and alter cell statistics.

  • Store the coordinate reference system, grid spacing and axis order in the output metadata.
  • Convert kilometres to metres, or square kilometres to square metres, only after confirming the source units.
  • Distinguish a 25 km grid cell from a 25 km × 25 km nominal footprint; coastal masking and projection geometry can make the valid area smaller.
  • When combining products, resample to a declared target grid and state the interpolation or aggregation method.

Use daily data for conditions and monthly data for trends

Daily monitoring

Use the daily Sea Ice Index when the question is “What is the Arctic doing now?” Plot the date against extent, annotate missing days and product transitions, and avoid interpreting a one-day movement as a climate trend. Weather can move ice or change concentration retrievals quickly, and daily processing uncertainty is visible in the series.

Monthly trend analysis

Use monthly means when comparing seasons or fitting a long-term trend. Monthly averaging reduces short-lived weather effects and day-to-day processing noise. State whether your monthly value is the published monthly product or a mean you calculated from daily values; the two can differ if days are missing or quality rules differ.

Aligning extent with thickness

Do not pair a daily extent value with a 30-day CryoSat-2 thickness value and call them simultaneous observations. Aggregate extent to the thickness product’s month, or clearly label the two time windows. For ICESat-2, distinguish monthly gridded freeboard from individual along-track passes and report the sampling window.

A reproducible project layout

A small amount of record-keeping makes an analysis auditable months later. Keep the following files:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • raw/ — untouched CSV, XLS and NetCDF downloads.
  • metadata/ — copied documentation, variable attributes, projection information and collection version.
  • scripts/ — download notes, parsing code, masks, unit conversions and plotting code.
  • derived/ — cleaned tables, monthly aggregates and figures with creation dates.
  • README — source name, exact source URL as displayed by the provider, version, access date, season, spatial grid, units, filters, pole-hole treatment and known gaps.

For every published number, preserve enough information to answer: Which sensor or algorithm produced it? What period and region does it cover? Was it daily, monthly or a 30-day average? Which assumptions converted the observation to thickness? Which version was used?

Common failure modes and fixes

Calling extent “fractional area”

Symptom: Your result counts a 16-percent cell as only 16 percent of a cell. Fix: That calculation is area, not extent. For extent, include the complete cell when concentration is greater than 15 percent.

Using a daily file for a climate trend

Symptom: The trend changes markedly when a few stormy days are added or removed. Fix: Use the published monthly series or calculate documented monthly means from complete daily data, then report missing days.

Expecting CryoSat-2 thickness in summer

Symptom: Your requested summer dates are absent. Fix: Version 1 coverage is 20 September 2010–15 May 2025 and is mainly September–May, with 30-day averaging. Use an appropriate ICESat-2 product or another documented collection for a different season.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating freeboard as thickness

Symptom: A file labelled freeboard is reported as metres of ice. Fix: Report freeboard, or use a documented derived-thickness variable and retain its snow and density assumptions.

Combining incompatible grids

Symptom: Cell-by-cell differences appear after overlaying products. Fix: Compare coordinate reference systems, grid spacing, cell centres and masks first. Regrid once with a stated method, preferably preserving area for area-based quantities.

Ignoring pole-hole or land masks

Symptom: Your extent differs from the official index despite using the same threshold. Fix: Match the index’s documented pole-hole treatment, land mask, invalid-value handling and algorithm version.

Overlooking version changes

Symptom: A historical value changes after you rerun the download. Fix: Keep the original file and version in the project, note the access date, and describe any reprocessing before comparing results.

Pick the workflow by research question

Question Recommended starting point How to report it
What is the current Arctic ice coverage? NSIDC daily Sea Ice Index extent. Date, extent units, threshold definition, product version and any missing day.
How has coverage changed over decades? NSIDC monthly extent, with monthly area if fractional coverage matters. Monthly definition, 1979-onward record, algorithm version and treatment of gaps.
How thick was the ice during the CryoSat-2 season? CryoSat-2 Level-4 Version 1. 25 km grid, 30-day averaging, date window, variable, mask and retrieval assumptions.
Where are freeboard or height measurements concentrated? ICESat-2 along-track or 25 km gridded products. Along-track versus gridded sampling, daily or monthly window, and whether the value is height, freeboard or derived thickness.
How can snow depth and thickness be compared across sensors? NSIDC’s 2025 combined ICESat-2/CryoSat-2 monthly product. Release year, monthly period, grid and the combined snow and ice assumptions.

What a defensible figure or dataset description contains

A clear caption should identify the quantity, not just say “sea ice.” For example: “Arctic sea-ice extent, monthly NSIDC Sea Ice Index values, cells with concentration greater than 15 percent, units of million square kilometres.” A thickness caption should add the sensor, retrieval level, grid, averaging window, season and whether the field is freeboard or derived thickness.

In the accompanying methods note, state the source collection and version, date accessed, spatial reference system, unit conversions, quality filters, pole-hole handling and treatment of missing data. Those details are what make a public-data result reproducible rather than merely plausible.
