Find the right NHL goalie stats
-
Open the NHL goalie statistics page.
-
Select the season and game type that match what you want to track. The live page has controls for both, and its default season can change; the current page showed 2026-27 when reviewed. Check the selector rather than assuming it is set to the season you need.

Search for the goalie by name and note the season totals. NHL.com also supports historical review by season, multiple seasons, and individual game. NHL’s guide to using stats explains those views.

Separate starts from appearances
Record GP (games played) and GS (games started) separately. GP counts games in which the goalie appeared; GS counts starts. A goalie can enter a game without starting it, including when another goalie played earlier in the same game, so GP is not a substitute for GS.
Track workload and results as different things
For each goalie, keep usage, shot volume, and performance measures distinct. The NHL table reports the following fields:
| What you want to understand | Fields to follow | How to read them |
|---|---|---|
| Usage | GS, GP, TOI | GS counts starts, GP counts appearances, and TOI records time on ice. |
| Workload volume | SA, Svs | SA is shots against; Svs is saves. Read saves alongside the number of shots faced and goals allowed. |
| Results | Sv%, GAA, GA | Sv% (save percentage) and GAA (goals-against average) summarize performance; GA is goals against. |
A goalie may face many shots and make many saves without that alone proving strong performance. Similarly, a lower shot count does not by itself mean the goalie had a light season: consider starts and TOI too. Workload and results describe different aspects of the season, and these statistics alone do not establish that workload caused a particular result.

Use season totals and game logs together
The season summary shows cumulative totals, while the By Game view shows the individual appearances behind them. For each game, note the goalie’s SA, Svs, GA, TOI, and game result. Revisiting the log after games helps you see whether a season total reflects steady usage or a particular run of appearances.
For a simple running record, keep a dated spreadsheet or note and refresh the official page after games. This is a personal logging approach; it is not a personal tracking product provided by NHL.com.

Compare goalies or stretches on equal terms
When comparing two goalies—or the same goalie across parts of a season—choose the same game type and a comparable time window. Compare on separate axes:
- Usage: GS, GP, and TOI.
- Workload volume: SA and Svs.
- Results: Sv%, GAA, and GA.
- Time window: individual game, selected span of games, or full season.
This is a practical way to organize a comparison, not an official NHL rating system. Avoid treating totals from unequal spans as directly equivalent, and refresh live totals because they change as games are played.

Recorded starts and game logs show what has happened; they do not establish who will start a future game. Nor do usage and performance numbers alone amount to a medical assessment of fatigue or prove why a goalie performed a certain way. Use the official statistics to follow recorded activity and results, not as a starter forecast or causal explanation.
