For a SWIFT international bank transfer, ask the sending bank for the payment confirmation and its 36-character UETR (Unique End-to-end Transaction Reference). Have the bank open a trace and tell you the latest reported status. Give the recipient the same confirmation and UETR so their bank can check incoming payments.
A transfer reaching the beneficiary bank is not the same as money being credited to the recipient’s account. The receiving bank may still be completing regulatory checks, foreign-exchange processing, data verification or a local posting cycle.

How do I track an international money transfer?
Start with the institution that sent the payment. It has the authoritative record of the route, intermediaries and latest network response. Follow this sequence:
- Confirm the route and promised date. Read the receipt or payment confirmation. Determine whether the transaction is a SWIFT bank payment or a transfer sent through a separate remittance provider. Note the amount, currency, send date, recipient name, account or wallet details and the disclosed availability date.
- Request the tracking reference. For a SWIFT payment, ask the sending bank for the UETR and a copy of the payment confirmation. If a provider handled the transfer outside SWIFT, request that provider’s transaction or tracking number instead.
- Ask the sender to open a trace. Request the most recent reported stage, whether the payment reached the recipient’s bank, whether that bank requested more information, and whether the sender can contact the institution currently reporting a pending, rejected or returned state.
- Have the recipient contact their bank. Send the confirmation and UETR through the bank’s normal secure channel. Ask the bank to search incoming payments using the reference, amount, currency, sender and value date.
- Escalate in writing if the status does not move. Keep the dates of every call, employee names or ticket numbers, receipts and written responses. If the transfer is covered by consumer-remittance rules, use the provider’s formal error or complaint process.
Do not assume that a public SWIFT website will show you the payment. SWIFT’s Tracker is a service for financial institutions; consumers normally obtain status through the sending and receiving institutions.
What is a UETR, and where do I get it?
A UETR is a 36-character Unique End-to-end Transaction Reference carried in SWIFT payment instruction messages. The originating bank creates it, and intermediary institutions pass the same reference along the payment chain. That common identifier lets banks trace one payment even when several institutions handle it.
Ask the originating or sending bank for the UETR and payment confirmation. The bank may display the reference in online banking, a wire receipt or a secure message, but the exact customer-facing format varies. If support staff give you another number, ask specifically whether it is the UETR rather than an internal case number.
The UETR identifies and traces a payment; it does not release funds, accelerate a compliance review or guarantee that you can see every internal status. SWIFT’s Universal Confirmations framework calls for covered customer-payment messages to receive a status confirmation, including credit or rejection, but the financial institutions still perform the checks and posting work.

A trace should distinguish the payment’s network position from the recipient’s account status. These stages are not interchangeable:
| Reported stage | What it generally means | Who must act next |
|---|---|---|
| Instruction accepted | The sending bank accepted the order and assigned a reference. This does not prove that the beneficiary bank has received it. | The sending bank can confirm release and investigate any hold before dispatch. |
| In transit or with an intermediary | The payment is moving through the institutions selected for that route, or a downstream institution has not yet supplied a final response. | The sending bank should query the relevant institution using the UETR. |
| Received by beneficiary bank | The recipient’s bank has the payment message or funds, but its internal processing may not be complete. | The beneficiary bank must complete local checks and post, reject or return the payment. |
| Last mile | The interval after arrival at the beneficiary bank and before credit to the customer’s account. SWIFT uses “last mile” for this stage. | The receiving bank and, where necessary, the recipient must supply information or wait for the next processing cycle. |
| Credited | The receiving bank has posted the amount to the recipient’s account or other delivery method. | The recipient should verify the account statement and report any discrepancy to that bank. |
| Rejected or returned | An institution declined the payment or sent it back. The reason may involve data, compliance, account or routing issues. | The sending bank should obtain the reason and explain when and how returned funds will be credited. |
A bank name shown on a receipt or status screen is not proof that the bank is physically holding the money. Routes differ by currency, country, correspondent relationships and the institutions involved. The sending bank’s trace is the reliable way to establish the route for your particular payment.

Has the money reached the recipient’s bank, or has it been credited?
Ask two separate questions: “Has the payment reached the beneficiary bank?” and “Has the beneficiary bank credited the recipient’s account?” A “yes” to the first can coexist with a “no” to the second.
When the receiving bank has the payment, it may need to match the account and beneficiary name, validate the purpose of payment, complete regulatory reporting, convert currency, or wait for a batch or local business-hours window. Until those steps finish, the recipient may see no balance change even though the payment is no longer in transit.
Ask the sending bank to quote the latest status and timestamp, not merely to say that the payment was sent. Ask the receiving bank whether it has located the incoming message, whether it needs documents or corrected details, and whether a local posting date has been assigned.
Why is my international transfer still pending?
SWIFT identifies several receiving-country and processing conditions that can extend the time between bank receipt and customer credit:
- Regulatory reporting or verification: The receiving institution may need additional identity, sanctions, anti-money-laundering or purpose-of-payment information.
- Foreign-exchange controls: Local rules can require approval or documentation before a foreign-currency payment is released or converted.
- Batch-based infrastructure: Some local payment systems post only at set intervals rather than continuously.
- Local business hours and holidays: A payment received outside operating hours may wait for the next processing window.
- Incomplete or incorrect data: A wrong account number, beneficiary name, address, purpose code or bank identifier can trigger a manual review or rejection.
- Manual processing: Staff may need to inspect the payment when automated matching fails or the amount requires additional review.
A pending label alone does not identify which condition applies. Request the exact outstanding action from the institution handling the payment and ask whether the sender can supply corrected information through a secure channel.

What to say when requesting a bank trace
Use a precise request so the support team opens an investigation instead of repeating the original payment-status screen:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Please open a trace for my international payment. The amount is [currency and amount], sent on [date] to [recipient and destination]. Please confirm the UETR, the latest institution and timestamp reported, whether the beneficiary bank has received it, whether it has requested additional information, and whether the payment is pending, credited, rejected or returned.”
Keep these details ready:
- Payment confirmation or wire receipt.
- UETR or provider transaction reference.
- Amount, currency and sending date.
- Recipient’s full name and account, wallet or pickup details.
- Beneficiary bank name and country, plus any bank identifier shown on the receipt.
- The quoted availability or value date.
- Any messages from the recipient’s bank or the transfer provider.
Ask for a case number and written confirmation of the trace. A bank may need permission from the account holder or may only discuss the transaction with the sender, so the sender should initiate the investigation even when the recipient is the person waiting for the funds.
What the recipient should do
- Contact the receiving bank through its secure app, website message system, branch or telephone channel.
- Provide the payment confirmation and UETR; do not post either publicly or send them to an unverified address.
- Ask the bank to search pending, suspense, unapplied and rejected incoming-payment queues, not only the ordinary account ledger.
- Confirm that the account can receive the currency and payment type and that the beneficiary name and account details match.
- Ask whether identification, an invoice, a purpose code, tax document or other local information is required.
- Send any requested documents through the bank’s approved secure process and request the expected posting date.
If the receiving bank says it cannot find the payment, give that response to the sending bank and ask it to compare the beneficiary-bank search with the UETR trace. Do not send a duplicate wire until the first payment’s status and possible return are understood.
How to track a transfer that was not sent through SWIFT
Money-transfer providers may use their own networks, wallets, cash-pickup systems or local payment rails. Use the transaction or tracking number on the provider’s receipt and contact that provider’s support team. Ask for the same facts: latest stage, destination institution, reason for a hold, action required and expected availability date.
No single universal public tracking process is established for every non-SWIFT provider. A provider may be the only party able to see its internal route, and a recipient’s bank may not be able to search for a provider transaction using a SWIFT UETR. Keep the provider receipt and follow its stated escalation and complaint instructions.
How long should a SWIFT transfer take?
SWIFT’s 2026 payment-speed page reports that 75% of SWIFT payments reach the beneficiary bank within 10 minutes and more than 90% reach it within one hour. These are network-level figures for reaching the beneficiary bank, not promises that a recipient will see the money in that time.
The same SWIFT page reports that in-flight time averages less than 20% of the total end-to-end payment journey, while the last mile accounts for more than 80% globally. Those figures explain why a payment can move quickly between institutions yet remain pending during receiving-bank processing. They do not predict the timing of an individual currency, country, bank, compliance review or holiday period.

- Send a written follow-up to the sending institution. Include the case number, UETR, promised availability date and the specific status you need clarified.
- Ask for the receiving institution’s response. If the beneficiary bank requested information or rejected the payment, ask the sender to state what was requested and how it was transmitted.
- Use the provider’s formal complaint channel. Save the complaint reference, submission date and every response.
- Check applicable consumer protections. Eligibility depends on the sender’s country, transaction type, provider and whether the transfer meets the legal definition of a covered remittance.
US cancellation and error rights for covered remittance transfers
US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) rules apply only to certain consumer remittance transfers, not automatically to every bank wire, business payment or transfer sent from another country. Check the receipt and contact the provider immediately.

Cancellation
For an eligible covered transfer, the sender may have a right to cancel at no cost within 30 minutes if the recipient has not picked up or received the funds. Scheduled transfers can have a separate cancellation window. The provider’s receipt states the applicable instructions and contact method; a cancellation request does not guarantee that a payment already delivered can be recalled.
Reporting an error
For a covered transfer, CFPB guidance says the sender generally has 180 days from the disclosed availability date to notify the provider of an error. Failure to deliver by that date may qualify as an error under the described protections. Notify the provider promptly and describe the amount, date, recipient, reference and the problem.
Investigation and complaint
The provider must investigate and determine whether an error occurred within 90 days after receiving notice, then tell the sender the result within three business days after completing the investigation. If the provider does not resolve the issue, the sender can submit a CFPB complaint. Other state or national protections may apply, but the deadlines and remedies differ by jurisdiction.

Quick Recap
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is it a SWIFT bank payment or a provider transfer? | SWIFT payments use a UETR across participating institutions; other providers use their own references and support systems. |
| What availability date is disclosed? | It gives you a concrete point for checking delay and, for eligible US remittances, may start an error-reporting deadline. |
| What tracking detail is supplied? | Confirm whether you receive a UETR or provider reference and whether status updates identify receipt, credit, rejection or return. |
| What are the total fees and exchange rate? | A low visible fee can be offset by the exchange rate or intermediary deductions; review the amount expected to be delivered. |
| How does escalation work? | Record the support channel, complaint route, operating hours and the documents needed for a trace. |
| What cancellation and error rights apply? | Read the receipt for cancellation limits, error-notice deadlines and complaint instructions for your transaction and location. |
Common mistakes that delay a resolution
- Asking only “Where is my money?” without supplying the UETR or transaction reference.
- Treating “sent” as proof that the beneficiary bank received and credited the payment.
- Assuming the bank named on a receipt is the institution currently holding or reviewing funds.
- Sending sensitive payment details through public social-media posts or an unverified email address.
- Waiting until a legal deadline approaches before reporting an error.
- Sending a second payment before the first one is traced, returned or confirmed as rejected.
