In 2026, Google Search Console reports generative AI impressions for Google surfaces, while Bing Webmaster Tools reports citation activity across Microsoft Copilot, Bing, and select partner experiences. Neither gives a universal measure of visibility across every AI search product, and a citation alone does not show how much a page shaped an answer.
Define what “AI search visibility” means for your measurement
There is no single, standardized GEO score. A useful measurement plan separates three questions: did a page appear in a particular AI experience, how was it represented in an answer, and did that exposure lead to a site visit or other outcome?

- Appearance: impressions or citations reported by a platform.
- Representation: which URL was cited, the context of the citation, and—where measurable—its prominence or contribution to the answer.
- Site outcomes: clicks, referrals, and conversions recorded in your own analytics. These are related signals, not proof that an AI citation caused a visit or conversion.
Keep each platform and surface distinct. Search, Discover, an AI answer mode, and a partner experience may have different reporting definitions and audiences; combining them into one total can conceal what changed.

Google’s report and Microsoft’s AI Performance reporting measure different things. Do not add their numbers together or present either as complete coverage of AI search.

Build a repeatable measurement plan
- Choose the surfaces and scope. List the specific AI experiences that matter, along with target geography, language, device, audience, and query or prompt themes. Treat each surface as its own reporting stream.
- Start with first-party reports. In Search Console, use the generative AI performance report to review Google-reported impressions and available page, country, device, and date dimensions. In Bing Webmaster Tools, review AI Performance for citations and available intent, topic, Citation Share, or comparison views. Feature availability may depend on the product’s rollout or preview status.
- Log context and definitions. For every observation, record the platform and surface, date range, URL, query or grounding-query context when available, geography, device, and the platform’s definition of the signal. A number without its denominator or reporting scope is hard to interpret.
- Keep a stable query set and protocol. Revisit the same query themes with the same geography, language, device, and observation method where possible. Record model or reporting changes, seasonality, and page updates rather than assuming that a period-to-period change has one cause.
- Separate visibility from business outcomes. Report platform impressions or citations alongside your own analytics’ clicks, referrals, and conversions as distinct measures. Do not attribute a traffic or revenue increase to AI citations without a suitable causal design.
Measure both citation selection and answer contribution
A URL can be selected as a citation without supplying the answer’s central evidence or language. Conversely, a cited page may contribute substantially to an answer. Citation counts therefore describe selection, not necessarily influence.
A 2026 manuscript by Zhang Kai, He Xinyue, and Yao Jingang proposes evaluating these as separate questions: citation selection and citation absorption, meaning the degree to which fetched-page content is reflected in the generated answer. Its controlled study used 602 prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overview/Gemini, and Perplexity and describes 21,143 valid search-layer citations in its public dataset. The authors characterize their findings as descriptive, not causal. Read the manuscript.
In that dataset, mean citations per prompt were 6.88 for ChatGPT, 12.06 for Google, and 16.35 for Perplexity. Mean fetched-page influence scores were 0.2713, 0.0584, and 0.0646, respectively. These are results from that study’s platform sample and controlled prompts—not stable platform-wide benchmarks, targets, or evidence that citation volume predicts influence.

If your team manually reviews answer contribution, use a documented rubric: note whether the page is cited, what claim or passage it supports, and whether that material appears to be central or incidental. Label this as an observation, not a platform metric, unless the platform itself supplies such a measure.

Compare like with like: the same surface, query themes, geography, language, device, and observation protocol across periods. Annotate content changes, seasonality, and platform or reporting changes. Bing’s Compare preview allows prior periods to be overlaid, but a change in citations can reflect shifts in user behavior, models, freshness, partner refresh cycles, competing content, or the wider web—not simply a change to your page.

- Platform and specific AI surface
- Date range and query or grounding-query theme
- Impressions or citations, with the platform’s definition
- Cited URL and citation context
- Citation Share, only where reported and with its grounding-query denominator
- Country, language, and device where available
- Separately measured clicks, referrals, and conversions
- Notes on content, model, or reporting changes
Use Google’s guidance as a guardrail, not a shortcut
Google says eligibility for its generative AI search features requires a page to be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet. Its guidance recommends useful, unique, people-first content and points to the Search Console report for measurement. It does not require special llms.txt files, mandatory tiny content chunks, AI-only rewriting, artificial mentions, or special structured data for appearance in Google’s generative AI search. Google cautions that third-party tools do not have access to those internal systems. Check what a tool actually observes, its coverage, and how it defines a citation before relying on its numbers.
