To track AI policy in your country, monitor three official sources: your legislature’s bill tracker for proposed laws, the government’s legislation register for laws already enacted, and relevant regulators’ consultation and rulemaking pages for proposed regulations. Save searches or enable alerts where available, then verify each update against the original document and record its identifier, status, date, and next event.
Start with the right official sources
No single tracker necessarily covers the whole AI-policy pipeline. A parliamentary bill tracker follows legislation before enactment; an official legislation register helps verify enacted laws and amendments. Regulators may issue consultations or rules without a new bill, while government work plans can signal initiatives before a proposal is formally introduced.

- Legislature: Search the national parliament or legislature’s official bill database.
- Legislation register: Check the official register for enacted instruments, amendments, and current legal text.
- Regulators: Monitor consultation, rulemaking, and notices pages for agencies overseeing areas such as privacy, employment, health, education, credit, or public services.
- Government policy pages: Review ministry plans and work programs for announced initiatives that have not yet become bills.
In federal or otherwise decentralized systems, repeat the search for relevant state, provincial, regional, or local institutions. The responsible body and type of instrument depend on the jurisdiction.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Begin with “artificial intelligence,” then search terms that describe the technology, how it is used, or the affected sector. Official databases may let you search titles and full text, filter by institution or procedural stage, or browse by subject.
#1 Best Overall
- Technology and systems: “machine learning,” “algorithmic systems,” “automated decision-making,” “foundation model,” and “synthetic media.”
- Use cases and sectors: hiring, health, education, credit, privacy, and public services.
Search terms are a starting point, not a guarantee of complete coverage. A proposal may address automated decisions or a specific industry without mentioning AI in its title. Use the database’s available filters and inspect relevant documents rather than relying on one keyword.
Set up alerts and keep a reliable record
Where official services offer saved searches, custom searches, or email notifications, use them for updates. Availability varies by jurisdiction. Keep a simple record for each proposal so that similarly named initiatives are not confused and you can tell what changed.
Rank #2
- Stable bill or procedure number
- Title and sponsoring body, sponsor, or responsible ministry
- Current stage and the date of the latest source document
- Next scheduled event, if one is listed
- Links to the bill or proposal text and committee or procedural materials
Alerts can flag activity, but they do not replace checking the underlying document. If a service does not provide alerts, add it to a recurring manual review.

Record the stage using the terminology of the relevant institution. The path varies by country and instrument, but it may include introduction, committee referral, hearings, amendments, votes, negotiations between chambers, formal adoption, publication, commencement, and implementation.
Rank #3
These stages are not interchangeable. An announcement or consultation is not an introduced bill; passage is not necessarily formal adoption; and adoption or publication does not always mean every provision is already in force. Check the source body’s documents for what has happened, what remains, and any stated commencement or implementation dates. Do not describe a proposal as binding law.
- Open the originating body’s document. Check the bill, amendment, consultation, regulation, official notice, or register entry—not just a summary page.
- Check its date and version. Look for newer documents, amendments, or consolidated text.
- Confirm the procedural event. Distinguish a scheduled event from one that has taken place.
- Update your record. Note the source body, document date, current stage, and next event.
What official tracking examples can—and cannot—do
Australia: legislation and updates
The Australian Government’s Federal Register of Legislation describes itself as “the authorised whole-of-government website for Commonwealth legislation and related documents.” It provides information about legislation and its relationships, and offers email notifications, custom searches, and saved items. Use it to follow Commonwealth legislation and updates; use parliamentary sources as well to track bills before they become legislation.

European Union: procedural tracking
The EU’s EU Law Tracker brings together information and documents from the European Parliament, Council, and Commission for ordinary legislative procedures. Its official page says new and ongoing procedures in that category are available since the tracker launched on 30 April 2024. It supports free-text and advanced searches, topic browsing, and timelines of procedural steps, including interinstitutional negotiations, and is available in all official EU languages. It is not a complete record of every national process or every non-ordinary EU regulatory process.
The European Parliamentary Research Service’s Legislative Train Schedule provides an overview of substantial EU proposals and historical context across the two previous parliamentary terms. Its information is updated monthly, so check the underlying procedural documents for the latest event when timing matters.
EU AI Act: navigation versus legal authority
The European Commission’s AI Act Explorer lets readers browse the Act by chapter, article, recital, and annex. The page says its text is based on the EUR-Lex consolidated version as of 27 July 2026, and directs readers to the original Official Journal publications for legally authentic text. This is a useful distinction wherever a searchable dashboard makes a law easier to navigate: confirm the authoritative published instrument when legal wording matters.

When comparing official services, check their jurisdiction and institutional coverage, whether they include bills, consultations, subordinate rules, policy plans, enacted texts, and implementation, and whether they provide useful search fields, alerts, history, primary-document links, language options, and accessible formats. Also check how often an overview is updated and whether it is an explanatory dashboard or an authoritative legal publication.
For perspective, a 2026 European Parliamentary Research Service report citing the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s World e-Parliament Report 2024 says 63% of surveyed parliaments had bill status or tracking tools and 55% had amendment status or tracking tools. These are survey findings about parliamentary tools generally—not AI legislation, a particular country, or the completeness of a live public service.
