How to Track a Young Footballer’s Minutes and Development Across Club and National Teams

Keep one private season ledger for every club and national-team appearance. Record actual minutes alongside the match, role and context, then review patterns with the young player and their coaches. Minutes can help identify questions to discuss; by themselves, they do not show whether a child is developing well.

Set up one season ledger

A single record across teams makes it easier to see the whole season and avoid double-counting. A spreadsheet or paper log is enough if it is kept consistently. Use one row per match, including appearances with no playing time, and distinguish those from a player being selected but unused or from a match for which you have no record.

Fields to record for each match

  • Identify the entry: season, date, team, competition, age group and opponent. Keep the player’s identifying details private and limited to what the record needs.
  • Describe the match: match duration and the source of the entry, such as an official match record, coach or family observation.
  • Record participation: starter, substitute, selected but unused, or no record available; position or role; and substitution entry and exit times.
  • Calculate actual minutes: use the recorded times and match duration, rather than estimating from whether the player started or appeared.
  • Add a brief note: capture the role or a relevant development focus, not a long list of speculative performance statistics.

These are practical ledger fields, not a form mandated by FIFA or UEFA. FIFA’s training guidance supports long-term tracking and review but does not prescribe one universal youth-minutes spreadsheet.

Reconcile the minutes after each match

  1. Enter the match duration and the player’s start and substitution times, using the most reliable record available.
  2. Calculate minutes from the time actually played. For a substitute, record each entry and exit if the player leaves and later returns.
  3. Check that the times make sense against the match duration and that the appearance status is clear. Do not enter zero minutes for an unused selection without marking it as unused.
  4. If a time or status cannot be confirmed, mark the entry as unknown or unavailable rather than filling the gap with a guess.

Review participation with development in mind

At a monthly or termly review, total minutes by team and competition, then look for patterns: participation becoming concentrated, interrupted or changing between environments. Set those figures beside the player’s role, level of challenge, training observations, a small number of development goals, coach feedback and the player’s own reflection.

Questions that make the record useful

  • Does the player understand their role in each team?
  • Is the competition challenging but appropriate for their age and stage?
  • What are they trying to improve, and have coaches seen opportunities to apply it in training and matches?
  • What next opportunity would support that learning?

These prompts are for a constructive conversation, not selection rules or medical thresholds. FIFA recommends age- and maturation-appropriate work, long-term planning and balanced opportunities to play; its guidance cautions against making short-term results the priority. See FIFA’s training guidance and its playing-opportunities guidance.

FIFA’s playing-opportunities page reports an average of 44 matches per season, including friendlies, for a 14-year-old male academy player in a top-20 member association; 22% fewer playing opportunities for girls than boys across the U-12 to U-21 key stages in the top 50 member associations; and that 69% of academies worldwide do not use video analysis for player development. The page displays 2022 copyright without stating the data year in the reviewed text. These are training-exposure figures, not match-minute recommendations. FIFA’s training guidance.

Choose a record-keeping method you can sustain

Option Useful for Check before relying on it
Paper log A straightforward record with no app setup. Can you keep it current, calculate minutes consistently and preserve a private copy?
Spreadsheet One season ledger that can be filtered or totalled by team and competition. Can you enter substitutions accurately, combine teams without duplicate rows, and control who can access the file?
App Potentially quicker match-day entry or automatic arithmetic. Check privacy and sharing controls, export options, and whether the app can combine separate teams in one season record.

Two vendor-described examples are Soccer Stats, which says its family app records minutes and other match events and builds season records, and Pitch Planner, which describes live player-minute tracking and a post-match view intended to inform later lineups. These are vendor descriptions, not independent product evaluations; features and availability may change. No independent comparison establishes that either is better than a spreadsheet.

Keep family tracking separate from medical information

A family minutes ledger is not a medical workload system. Record training attendance or load only if it is useful and can be done consistently; do not use a family log to make medical or return-to-play decisions. If an injury or health issue affects availability across teams, involve the parent or guardian and the responsible medical and coaching contacts, following the relevant consent and privacy procedures.

UEFA announced on 2 July 2026 a medical handover pilot for the 2026/27 season. Its initial scope is senior men’s and women’s national teams in Europe and the clubs of players called into those squads. UEFA says the process uses the existing Team Information Management Exchange (TIME) tool and is subject to player consent and data-protection requirements. The announcement does not establish that the pilot covers youth national teams or shares youth players’ minutes. UEFA’s announcement.

Article 19 sets youth-development programme requirements within UEFA club licensing, including a written programme, regular implementation and quality review, age-group football education, medical support including medical records, and a review-and-feedback process. This is not a universal legal requirement for every club or family. UEFA regulations, Article 19.

Protect the player’s privacy and perspective

Keep the record proportionate and share it only with people who need it for their role. Follow the club’s, association’s and local data-protection rules. FIFA’s safeguarding policy guidance is directed at football stakeholders and practitioners supporting children, and calls for policies and programmes suited to local context.
