How to Track a Hurricane Path and Get Official Alerts on Your Phone

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Start with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) advisory for the storm, then check NOAA’s live tracker for the map and your local National Weather Service office or emergency-management agency for hazards that the center-line map cannot show. On your phone, keep Wireless Emergency Alerts enabled and add FEMA and local text or email alerts for redundancy. Treat the cone as a forecast of the storm’s center—not the area that will be safe or the full area that will be hit.

The safest phone-based hurricane-tracking workflow

Use a layered approach rather than a single app or social-media map. Each official channel answers a different question: the NHC explains where the storm center is expected to go, NOAA’s live tracker supplies interactive imagery and past tracks, and local authorities translate that forecast into decisions about surge, flooding, evacuation and shelters.

1. Open the current NHC public advisory

Find the active storm’s public advisory on the National Hurricane Center website. The advisory is the authoritative starting point identified by NOAA for the official forecast track. It normally includes the forecast track, current watches and warnings, key messages and links to local emergency-management offices.

Check the issue time before acting on a screenshot or a post shared by someone else. Forecasts change as new observations arrive, and an older map can show a track or warning area that has already been replaced. Read the key messages as well as the graphic: they often explain the main hazards, timing and uncertainty in plain language.

2. Use NOAA’s live tracker for context

NOAA’s Live Hurricane Tracker provides interactive satellite imagery and current or previous storm paths. It is useful for seeing how the system is organized and how the observed track compares with earlier forecasts. For a storm-specific decision, open the linked NHC advisory and key messages instead of treating an unverified third-party map as the forecast.

3. Switch to local authorities for local consequences

Check the National Weather Service office serving your area and your county, city, tribal or state emergency-management agency. Those offices issue or relay information about storm surge, rainfall, wind, flash flooding, evacuation zones, shelters and road closures. Two communities can experience very different danger even when they are near the same forecast-track line.

Follow an evacuation order from local officials even if your location appears outside the center-line cone. Local authorities use detailed elevation, coastline, drainage and infrastructure information that a national track graphic cannot represent.

What the hurricane cone actually means

NOAA National Weather Service states: “The National Hurricane Center Forecast Cone shows the probable forecast track of the center of the storm.” The shaded shape is therefore a probability display for the center, not a footprint of the whole hurricane.

The cone is not a safety boundary

Do not assume that being outside the cone means you are out of danger, or that every location inside it will receive the same conditions. Tropical-storm-force winds, hurricane winds, storm surge, rainfall and tornadoes can extend far from the center and can reach inland areas. A large storm can affect places well outside the shaded area.

NOAA/National Weather Service guidance published for 2026 says the storm center has remained within the forecast cone roughly two-thirds of the time historically. That statistic describes the historical performance of the center-track forecast. It does not promise that impacts stay inside the cone, and it does not predict the intensity or timing of conditions at your address.

  • Storm-surge products: surge warnings identify life-threatening water rise along vulnerable coasts and waterways.
  • Rain and flood products: flash-flood warnings and local rainfall forecasts cover threats that may occur far from the center.
  • Evacuation and shelter notices: local emergency managers specify who should leave, when to leave and where public shelters are operating.

Compare your address with these products and with local instructions, not just with the cone’s edge or a single projected line.

How to turn on official hurricane alerts on your phone

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA)

Keep government alerts enabled in your phone’s emergency-alert settings. Wireless Emergency Alerts are broadcast through participating wireless carriers to capable phones in the threatened area. They require no app subscription and can continue to reach you when you have not signed up for a particular county’s mailing list.

Qualifying National Weather Service products include hurricane warnings, storm-surge warnings, typhoon warnings and extreme-wind warnings. WEA is an alert channel, not a complete forecast feed: it will not deliver every forecast update, advisory or local instruction. Read the message immediately and follow the linked or named local authority.

  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Scroll to Government Alerts.

Android settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Look under Notifications, Safety and emergency or Wireless Emergency Alerts.
  3. Open the emergency-alert controls and enable the government categories available on your phone.
  4. Review sound, vibration and reminder options so an overnight warning is noticeable.

Android menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version. If a search for “emergency alerts” in Settings finds a different path, use that device-specific screen rather than assuming another phone’s instructions apply.

FEMA app alerts

The official FEMA Android listing says its app can provide National Weather Service and Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) alerts for up to five selected locations, using ZIP-code precision. Add your home, workplace, family member’s area or another location you routinely monitor. Treat the app as a location-based supplement to WEA, not a replacement for local instructions or the phone’s built-in emergency alerts.

Local emergency-management subscriptions

Sign up for your county, city, tribal or state emergency-management text and email systems when they are available. These systems can provide evacuation-zone instructions, shelter openings, curfews, road closures and recovery information that national alerts cannot tailor to one neighborhood. NHC advisories link to state emergency-management offices, and NOAA recommends using multiple ways to receive forecasts and warnings.

Hurricane watch versus hurricane warning

The difference is both a timing signal and a prompt to act. A watch means conditions are possible; a warning means they are expected in the specified area.

Message Official meaning What to do
Hurricane watch “A Hurricane Watch means hurricane conditions are possible somewhere within the watch area, with tropical-storm-force winds beginning within the next 48 hours.” Review your evacuation route, secure property, charge devices, check supplies and monitor updates. Complete preparations before travel becomes hazardous.
Hurricane warning “A Hurricane Warning means hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area, with tropical-storm-force winds beginning within 36 hours.” Take immediate protective action. Follow evacuation orders, move to the designated shelter or safe structure and do not wait for the storm center to approach.

Also watch for storm-surge, extreme-wind and flash-flood warnings. A location can receive one of these warnings even when it is not near the center of the hurricane.

Which tracking and alert channel should you use?

No single channel provides the map, local detail and fail-safe delivery that a hurricane requires. This comparison shows how the options fit together.

Channel Authority Geographic specificity Connectivity required Battery dependence Primary output
NHC public advisory Official national hurricane forecast Storm-wide forecast; local links included Internet or cellular data Phone or computer battery Forecast track, watches, warnings and key messages
NOAA Live Hurricane Tracker NOAA interactive tracking Interactive current and previous paths Internet or cellular data Phone or computer battery Satellite imagery and track visualization
FEMA app FEMA/IPAWS and NWS alerts Up to five selected ZIP-code locations Internet for setup and app updates; delivery depends on connectivity Phone battery Location-based alert notifications
WEA Government alert broadcast through participating carriers Phones in the threatened broadcast area Compatible cellular service; no app subscription Phone battery Short, urgent warning messages
Local emergency-management alerts County, city, tribal or state authorities Often the most precise for evacuation and shelters Varies by program; usually cellular data or text/email service Phone battery Evacuation, shelter, road and local hazard instructions
NOAA Weather Radio NOAA/National Weather Service broadcast Coverage depends on the transmitter and your location No internet or mobile subscription Uses batteries; hand-crank or USB models add options Continuous broadcast forecasts and warnings

Use NHC and NOAA for the storm’s official position and forecast, WEA for automatic urgent messages, FEMA and local systems for location-specific redundancy, and a NOAA Weather Radio when communications infrastructure is unreliable.

Keep a NOAA Weather Radio as a phone-independent backup

NOAA/National Weather Service lists NOAA Weather Radio among trusted sources for more information. A battery-powered or hand-crank radio can continue broadcasting when a phone battery is dead, cellular service is congested or internet access fails.

Features worth checking

  • NOAA/NWR band support: the radio must receive the frequencies used for NOAA Weather Radio.
  • SAME or location alerting: useful when you want alerts for a particular county or area, where supported.
  • Loud alarm and readable display: important during sleep or power outages.
  • Battery backup: keep spare batteries in a waterproof container.
  • Hand-crank or USB charging: provides another way to power the unit during a long outage.

Test reception before hurricane season and store the radio where it can be heard from sleeping areas. A power bank can extend a phone’s life, but it does not replace an independent broadcast receiver.

A practical preparation checklist

Before a storm threatens

  • Enable WEA and verify that emergency sounds are not silenced by a setting you rely on.
  • Install and configure the FEMA app if you want alerts for up to five selected ZIP-code locations.
  • Subscribe to local emergency-management alerts and save the relevant agency’s phone number.
  • Bookmark or save the NHC advisory page and NOAA tracker for quick access.
  • Charge your phone, spare battery and NOAA Weather Radio; keep charging cables together.
  • Learn your evacuation zone, routes, shelter rules and the needs of household members, pets and medical equipment.

When a watch is issued

  • Read the latest NHC key messages and local National Weather Service forecast.
  • Check storm-surge, rainfall, wind and flash-flood information separately from the cone.
  • Finish securing outdoor objects and confirm transportation if you may need to evacuate.
  • Save important documents and contacts offline in case data service becomes intermittent.

When a warning or evacuation order is issued

  • Act immediately according to the warning and local emergency-management instructions.
  • Leave when ordered; do not wait for a clearer-looking cone or for the eye to approach.
  • If sheltering, move to the safest available interior location away from windows and follow local guidance about flooding and wind.
  • Conserve phone battery for official updates and emergency calls. Use text messages when voice networks are congested.
  • Continue monitoring the radio and official alerts; conditions can worsen after the first warning.

What to do when tracking fails or information conflicts

Your phone shows no alert

WEA is geographically broadcast and only applies to qualifying warnings, so the absence of a message does not prove that no danger exists. Check the NHC advisory, your local National Weather Service office and local emergency-management channel. Confirm that government alerts are enabled and that your phone supports WEA on your carrier.

Cellular service or internet is down

Use the NOAA Weather Radio, battery-powered television or local official broadcasts if available. Ask a trusted neighbor or emergency official for updates rather than relying on an old screenshot. Keep the phone in low-power mode and reserve its battery for emergency communication.

Maps disagree

Prefer the newest NHC advisory and its key messages over reposted graphics. Compare the publication time, storm name and advisory number. Then check local hazard products: a map showing the center track cannot settle a storm-surge or flash-flood question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are outside the cone but receive an evacuation notice

Follow the local order. Evacuation zones are based on surge, flooding, terrain and infrastructure, while the cone represents uncertainty in the center’s path. Local officials may also order movement for a hazard that is not visible on a national cone graphic.

Keeping up with the 2026 NHC interface changes

On March 24, 2026, NOAA announced that the National Hurricane Center would introduce new operational forecast-cone graphics and Hawaii storm-surge alerts for the 2026 hurricane season. Because labels and graphics can change, use the live NHC page and follow controls by function—public advisory, forecast track, watches and warnings, key messages and local links—rather than depending on an old screenshot or a memorized button name.

The underlying safety rule remains stable: use NHC and NOAA for the official forecast, interpret the cone as a center-track probability, and rely on local emergency-management instructions for what to do at your address.
