How to Track a Hurricane: Official Forecasts, Maps, and Key Terms

Start with the National Hurricane Center’s live advisory and forecast map, then check the timestamp and advisory number. Read the cone as uncertainty around the projected center, not as the storm’s footprint or a map of every dangerous place. For decisions at your address, combine the NHC forecast with wind, arrival-time, rainfall and local warning information from your National Weather Service office and emergency-management agency.

Use the National Hurricane Center as your primary tracker

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) publishes the official tropical-cyclone information for the Atlantic, Eastern North Pacific and Central North Pacific basins. Its storm pages bring together the products needed to follow a developing or active system:

  • Public advisories with the current position, movement, intensity and forecast reasoning.
  • Forecast discussions explaining why the track or intensity forecast changed.
  • Forecast graphics, including the familiar track cone and warning overlays.
  • Wind-probability, wind-field and arrival-time graphics for local hazard planning.
  • Geographic information system (GIS) data for users who need to load tracks, cones, warning areas or wind fields into mapping software.

Open the live storm page rather than relying on a saved screenshot or social-media image. Every product carries an issue time and advisory number. A map that was accurate several hours ago can be superseded by a new forecast, a special advisory or a warning change.

The NHC’s normal Atlantic graphic schedule is every six hours at 5 a.m., 11 a.m., 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, or the corresponding Eastern Standard Time schedule when applicable. Eastern Pacific and Central Pacific products follow their own basin schedules. Intermediate advisories and special graphics can appear between those routine releases, especially when watches or warnings change or a cyclone changes significantly. Treat the timestamp printed on the current product as authoritative.

Read the track map from the center outward

The standard NHC graphic combines several kinds of information. Examine each layer separately instead of treating the whole image as one prediction.

Current storm marker

The current marker shows the estimated center at the advisory time. It is a snapshot of where the center was analyzed, not a guarantee that the center is exactly at that pixel. Compare its time label with the advisory time so you know how old the position is.

Forecast-position dots

Dots farther along the projected path mark predicted center positions at labeled forecast times. They show where forecasters expect the center to be at those hours, not the edge of the wind, rain or surge. A dot labeled 24 hours, for example, is a center forecast for that lead time; it is not a promise that conditions will remain quiet until that moment.

Intensity letters

NHC graphics abbreviate forecast status with letters: D for tropical depression, S for tropical storm, H for hurricane and M for major hurricane. Use the legend and accompanying thresholds and units on the specific graphic. A category or letter describes the forecast intensity of the cyclone, generally by its maximum sustained wind, and does not describe every condition in a community. Rainfall, tornadoes, storm surge and damaging winds can occur outside the area you associate with the label.

Watch and warning overlays

Colored or patterned overlays identify areas covered by a tropical-storm or hurricane watch or warning. The exact colors and symbols are defined in the legend on that map. Read the legend rather than inferring alert status from how close a location appears to the centerline. A place can be under a watch or warning even when the center forecast is well offshore, and an area outside the cone can still receive dangerous conditions.

What the forecast cone means—and what it does not

The cone represents uncertainty in the forecast track of the cyclone’s center. NHC builds it by drawing circles around forecast center positions. The radius of each circle is based on historical errors in official forecasts at that lead time; connecting the circles produces the cone shape.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, the cone answers: “Where might the center travel?” It does not answer: “Where will hurricane conditions occur?” The storm is not a point. Its wind, rain, surge and tornado threats extend outward from the center, often far beyond the cone. The NHC’s graphical product description puts it plainly: “It is important to remember that tropical cyclones are not a point. Their effects can span many hundreds of miles from the center.”

Historical data cited by the NHC indicate that the entire five-day path of the storm center remains inside the cone about 60–70% of the time. That statistic concerns the complete center track, not the chance that a particular town will experience hurricane conditions. It also does not mean that every location inside the cone will be hit, or that locations outside it are safe.

Why the cone widens

Forecast uncertainty grows with time. A small error in the initial position, steering winds or intensity can produce a large displacement several days later, so the historical-error circles become larger at longer lead times. The cone is therefore narrow near the current position and wider toward the five-day end. A wide cone is not a prediction that the storm will grow in size; it is a visual expression of track uncertainty.

2026 cone radii are basin- and year-specific

For the 2026 Atlantic and Eastern/Central North Pacific graphics, NHC calculated cone-circle radii from official forecast errors during 2021–2025. The 120-hour (five-day) radius is 200 nautical miles in the Atlantic and 138 nautical miles in the Eastern and Central Pacific. These are the radii used to form the center-track cone at that forecast lead time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
2026 basin graphic 120-hour cone-circle radius What the number represents
Atlantic 200 nautical miles Historical official center-forecast error radius used in the cone
Eastern and Central North Pacific 138 nautical miles Historical official center-forecast error radius used in the cone

Neither value is a forecast of storm diameter, wind extent, rainfall, surge or local-impact probability. NHC can revise these definitions as the historical error sample changes, so do not treat the 2026 values as permanent constants.

Track hazards beyond the cone

Once you have read the center forecast, switch to products designed for the hazard you are trying to understand. NHC’s graphics guide distinguishes several products that should not be compared as if they depict the same thing.

Your question Most useful product How to interpret it
Where could the center go? Forecast cone and forecast-position dots Shows uncertainty around the projected center track.
Is my area under an official alert? Watch and warning overlay Shows the geographic area covered by the named NHC product; follow the map legend.
How likely are tropical-storm-force or hurricane-force winds here? Wind-probability graphics Use the probability for the wind threshold and time period shown on the product.
How far does the wind field extend? Wind-field graphic Shows forecast wind radii or areas, which can extend well outside the cone.
When could strong winds reach my location? Arrival-time graphic Use the displayed threshold and time window; it is not a center-arrival forecast.
How can I map the data myself? NHC GIS data Load official track, cone, warning or wind-field layers into compatible mapping software.

Rainfall, flash flooding, storm surge, coastal inundation and tornado threats often require additional National Weather Service products. A hurricane’s dangerous weather can affect locations many hundreds of miles from its center, and the areas experiencing tropical-storm- or hurricane-force winds can extend beyond the cone.

A repeatable step-by-step tracking routine

  1. Open the current NHC storm page. Select the active system in the correct basin. Avoid relying on a reposted image whose issue time you cannot verify.
  2. Read the advisory header first. Note the advisory number, issue time, storm classification, center position, movement and maximum sustained wind. These establish the snapshot you are viewing.
  3. Check the forecast discussion. Look for explanations of steering patterns, intensity changes, forecast confidence and reasons for a track shift. This context helps you understand why successive maps differ.
  4. Locate your area on the map. Compare your location with the forecast dots and the cone, but do not use proximity to the centerline as a safety test.
  5. Read the watch and warning legend. Confirm whether your county, coastal segment or other relevant area is covered. Alert boundaries, not the centerline, determine the official product area.
  6. Open the wind products. Check the wind-field and wind-probability graphics for the threshold relevant to you. These show threats that a center track cannot show.
  7. Check arrival time. If available, use the arrival-time product to see when tropical-storm-force or another displayed wind threshold could begin at your location. Plan to finish preparations before that window.
  8. Read local instructions. Your National Weather Service office and emergency-management agency may issue flash-flood, storm-surge, tornado, evacuation or shelter guidance that is more specific than the regional NHC map.
  9. Repeat after each update. Forecasts and warning areas change. Recheck the timestamp and advisory number every time you revisit the map.

How to decide whether a location is at risk

Use a layered decision rather than a single line on the map. First, determine whether an NHC watch or warning covers the location. Next, examine wind probabilities and the forecast wind field for the thresholds that can damage buildings, trees, power lines or vehicles. Then check arrival-time information to establish when preparations must be complete. Finally, consult local products for rainfall, flooding, storm surge, tornadoes and evacuation instructions.

Do not wait for the center forecast to pass over your community before acting. The cone describes uncertainty in a center path, and hazardous weather arrives according to the storm’s size, forward speed and individual wind, rain and surge fields. A coastal community can face dangerous surge on the side of the storm far from the forecast center, while inland areas can experience flooding and tornadoes after the center moves away.

If officials issue an evacuation order, leave according to the stated route and timing. If no order exists but you are in a manufactured home, flood-prone area, coastal surge zone or another vulnerable setting, use local emergency-management guidance to decide whether to relocate. The NHC map supports that decision; it does not replace local authority.

Understanding changes between advisories

A shifted center track

When the cone moves, the change may reflect new observations, a different estimate of the current center or updated steering forecasts. Compare the latest and previous advisory times before concluding that the storm suddenly “turned.” Use the current product for planning.

A changed intensity label

A transition from depression to tropical storm, or hurricane to major hurricane, changes the classification of the forecast center. It does not instantly redraw every hazard. Wind, rainfall and surge products provide the more useful information for a specific location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A new or expanded warning

Warnings can be issued, extended or canceled independently of a dramatic cone movement. Read the overlay and its legend on the newest map, then follow local instructions for the affected area.

Intermediate and special advisories

Routine six-hour graphics are not the only updates. Intermediate advisories and special graphics may be issued when warnings change or the cyclone changes significantly. The printed issue time is more reliable than an assumed schedule.

Using NHC GIS data instead of the standard map

Most readers should use the standard NHC graphics, but GIS data can help emergency planners, researchers and technically experienced users combine official layers with local maps. NHC provides data for forecast tracks, cones, warning areas and wind fields. The portal notes that data availability is subject to change.

Before importing a layer, verify its basin, advisory time, coordinate system and forecast lead times. Keep the advisory number with the downloaded file so a later analyst can identify which forecast was used. Do not mix a current warning layer with an older track or wind field without labeling the different times; the resulting map can look precise while combining incompatible forecasts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional backup: NOAA Weather Radio

NOAA Weather Radio provides a second way to receive official watches, warnings, forecasts and other hazard information. NWS broadcasts operate continuously. Some receivers offer audible or visual alerts, Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) location selection or battery backup.

Capabilities vary by receiver, and a radio is useful only where the signal is reliable. Check reception at home and keep backup power available if your model supports it. Treat the radio as a preparedness aid, not a replacement for the NHC map, local National Weather Service products or emergency-management instructions.

Common tracking mistakes and their fixes

  • Mistake: treating the cone as the storm’s size. Fix: open wind-field and wind-probability products; the cone is only center-track uncertainty.
  • Mistake: assuming the centerline is the most likely place for every impact. Fix: use watches, warnings and hazard-specific products for your location.
  • Mistake: reading an old screenshot. Fix: verify the issue time and advisory number on the live NHC product.
  • Mistake: assuming outside-the-cone means safe. Fix: check wind extent, rainfall, surge and local warnings, which can reach far beyond the cone.
  • Mistake: treating a category as a complete impact forecast. Fix: read the wind threshold and units in the legend, then assess rainfall, surge, tornado and flooding products separately.
  • Mistake: comparing maps from different basins or products. Fix: confirm basin coverage, timestamp and the question each product is designed to answer.
  • Mistake: waiting for a final track. Fix: act on current watches, warnings and local instructions; forecasts are updated as new information arrives.
  • Mistake: combining mismatched GIS layers. Fix: retain advisory numbers and timestamps and use layers from the same forecast cycle when possible.
