To track an Indian GST refund, open the GST Portal and choose Services > Refunds > Track Application Status. Enter the Application Reference Number (ARN), or select the filing year in the logged-in tracker, then click Search. GSTN also documents an ARN-only, pre-login route: Services > Track Application Status > Refund.
That lookup shows where the refund application is in the GST processing workflow. It does not by itself prove that money has reached your bank account. For bank-account validation and payment disbursal, check PFMS as well. The GST Portal covers the application stage; PFMS covers validation and release of the sanctioned amount.

What you need before checking
The quickest identifier is the ARN generated when the refund application was filed. It appears on the filing confirmation and ARN receipt. If you are signed in to the GST Portal, the tracker can also accept the filing year, but using the ARN is normally more precise because it identifies one application rather than all applications filed in a period.

- Filing year: Available as an alternative in the logged-in tracker.
- Access to the GST Portal: Needed for the account-based route; GSTN also documents a pre-login ARN lookup.
- PFMS and bank details: Required when you need to know whether the account was validated or the payment was actually disbursed.
If you no longer have the receipt, GSTN explains that you can retrieve it from Services > Refunds > My Saved/Filed Applications. Open the ARN hyperlink for the relevant application and download the receipt: GSTN’s “View Submitted or Saved Application for Refund” guide.

Keep the filing confirmation, the ARN receipt and any order or notice together. The ARN is useful for every later status search, while the order documents explain a sanction, partial sanction or rejection. Do not substitute an invoice number, return-period reference or bank transaction number for the ARN when using the refund tracker.
Track a refund while logged in
- Sign in to the official GST Portal.
- Open Services > Refunds > Track Application Status.
- Enter the ARN, or choose the applicable filing year if you are using the year-based search.
- Click Search.
- Read the stage shown for the application. The stage indicates where processing is waiting with the taxpayer or a tax officer; it is not a bank-credit confirmation.
GSTN’s advisory describes this tracker as the place to identify the exact stage at which the application is pending with the officer or taxpayer. Menu names can change if the portal is redesigned, so use the labels currently displayed after signing in. The official advisory is available at GSTN’s refund-tracking advisory.
Take a screenshot or note the date, ARN and displayed stage for your records. If the application later moves to another stage, that record helps you distinguish a new update from an unchanged result. A stage is a process marker, not a promise that the next step will finish on a particular date.
Track by ARN without signing in
For a basic stage check, GSTN documents a pre-login path:
- Open the GST Portal home page.
- Choose Services > Track Application Status > Refund.
- Enter the ARN.
- Submit the search and review the highlighted stage.
The functionality notice says the current stage is highlighted while the remaining stages are shown separately, making it easier to see where the application has stopped. This route is useful when you only need a status lookup and do not want to enter the taxpayer account. GSTN described the feature in its February 2021 functionality compilation.
The pre-login route is an ARN search, not a replacement for every account function. If you need to retrieve a receipt, inspect saved applications, review profile bank details or read a document attached to the taxpayer account, use the logged-in portal route. If the public page does not return a result, repeat the search after copying the ARN from the logged-in application list.
GST Portal status versus money credited
A refund application has two related but distinct tracks. The GST Portal records the application’s processing stage. PFMS records bank-account validation and the movement of the sanctioned payment. A GST Portal entry showing that an officer has acted on the application should therefore not be read as proof that the amount has been deposited.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Question you are asking | Where to check | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Where is my refund application waiting? | GST Portal refund tracker | The current taxpayer or officer processing stage. |
| Has the bank account passed validation? | PFMS, and the GST Portal’s bank-status feature where available | Whether the account details supplied for the relevant refund step were accepted. |
| Has the sanctioned amount been sent? | PFMS and then the bank account | The payment-disbursal stage; a sanction order alone is not confirmation of credit. |
| What decision did the officer record? | GST Portal, including an RFD-06 outcome when issued | Whether the refund was sanctioned, partly sanctioned or rejected, as indicated by the displayed outcome. |
GSTN states that taxpayers should use the GST Portal to find the exact pending stage and PFMS to check bank validation or disbursal. The distinction is set out in the official GSTN advisory.
This means “approved,” “sanctioned,” “payment order issued” and “credited” should not be used as interchangeable words. The first three describe decisions or documents in the GST workflow. “Credited” describes a completed banking transaction. Confirm that last event through PFMS and the account statement.

Why bank validation occurs twice
Bank validation is tied to two different documents in the refund workflow, so a successful first check does not necessarily mean the final payment has completed.
Validation connected with RFD-01
RFD-01 is the refund application. GSTN explains that a tax officer can issue a payment order only after PFMS validates the bank account entered in the RFD-01 application. If this validation is pending or fails, the application can show progress in the GST Portal while payment-order issuance remains blocked.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Validation connected with RFD-05
RFD-05 is the payment order. GSTN says final disbursal of the amount sanctioned by the officer occurs only after PFMS validates the bank account in RFD-05. Consequently, an issued or sanctioned order and a completed bank credit are separate events.
When the GST Portal indicates a decision but the funds are not in the account, check PFMS rather than assuming the portal entry is wrong. The two-stage explanation appears in GSTN’s refund application and PFMS tracking advisory.
Use the document reference to explain an apparent mismatch: RFD-01 relates to the application-stage bank check, whereas RFD-05 relates to the payment-order-stage check. A green account indicator or an earlier successful validation cannot, by itself, establish that the RFD-05 amount has been released.
Check bank-account validation in the GST Portal
GSTN’s registration guide includes a bank-account status feature. In that view:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- A green tick means the bank account was successfully validated.
- A red cross means validation failed.
- An account still being validated may show no status while the check is in progress.
This profile-level indicator helps diagnose account details, but it is not a substitute for the PFMS disbursal status associated with a particular refund. For the indicator definitions, see GSTN’s “Check Bank Account Status” guide.
Interpret the icon in context. No icon or an in-progress state does not establish that the refund was rejected; it only indicates that validation has not produced a completed result in that view. A red cross identifies failed bank validation, while the refund decision itself remains a separate question answered by the application record and any RFD-06 order.
How to interpret common displayed outcomes
Pending with officer or taxpayer
The highlighted GST Portal stage tells you which side currently has the next action. “Pending with officer” means the application is in the officer’s processing queue or review step; “pending with taxpayer” means an action, clarification or response may be required from the applicant. Neither label supplies a guaranteed completion or credit date.

When the stage is with the taxpayer, look for an attached notice, clarification request or other portal instruction before treating the status as merely informational. When it is with the officer, retain the ARN and monitor the same tracker rather than assuming that a payment has been initiated.
Bank validation or disbursal pending
Use PFMS for the validation or payment stage. Also review the bank-status indicator in the GST Portal if the account details need checking. A pending validation is different from a rejection and should not be described as a final refund decision.
RFD-06 issued
GSTN functionality material identifies these displayed RFD-06 outcomes:
- Refund Sanctioned in RFD-06
- Refund Partially Sanctioned in RFD-06
- RFD-06 issued, Refund rejected
These are the labels surfaced in the GSTN notice, not an exhaustive dictionary of every status a taxpayer might see. Read the actual order and any accompanying notice for the amount and decision details. The labels are documented in GSTN’s January–March 2022 functionality compilation.
A partial sanction means the displayed decision and the amount authorized must be read from the order; it does not mean the entire amount claimed was paid. Likewise, a rejection label identifies the recorded outcome but does not, by itself, explain the grounds or available response. Download the order and read its case-specific text.

What to do when the ARN is missing
- Search the filing confirmation, email, downloaded receipt or other filing record for the ARN.
- Sign in and open Services > Refunds > My Saved/Filed Applications.
- Locate the refund application and open its ARN hyperlink.
- Download the ARN receipt and use that number in the tracker.
The ARN is preferable to trying multiple years because it identifies the individual application. If the application is not visible, check that you are using the taxpayer account associated with the filing and that you have selected the appropriate application list.
Do not create a second refund application merely because the first ARN is temporarily unavailable. First recover the receipt or application record, then search the recovered ARN. Duplicate filings can make it harder to identify which application is being processed.
Troubleshoot a failed or unhelpful search
The tracker returns no result
- Check every ARN character and remove accidental spaces before searching.
- If you used the logged-in route, try the correct filing year or switch to the ARN search.
- Confirm that the application was actually submitted, rather than only saved as a draft.
- Retrieve the receipt from My Saved/Filed Applications and copy the ARN from the portal instead of retyping it.
- Try the documented pre-login ARN route if the logged-in year search is unhelpful, or try the logged-in route if the public search does not return the application.
The GST Portal shows progress but the bank has no credit
- Check PFMS for bank validation and disbursal.
- Review the bank-account status indicator for a green tick, red cross or an in-progress state.
- Remember that RFD-01 validation precedes payment-order issuance and RFD-05 validation precedes final disbursal.
- Compare the bank account details used in the refund application and payment order with the account you are monitoring.
- Read the sanctioned amount in the order and compare it with the amount expected in the bank statement.
The account shows a red cross
A red cross means the bank validation failed according to GSTN’s status guide. Verify the account information in the portal and follow the official correction or revalidation process available for the taxpayer profile. Do not infer that a failed account validation is the same as a rejected refund; the refund decision and payment validation are separate parts of the workflow.
The application shows an RFD-06 rejection
Download and read the order and any reason or notice attached to it. The tracker’s rejection label identifies the recorded outcome, while the order supplies the case-specific details needed to decide whether a response, correction or other remedy is available. This article does not assign a remedy because the appropriate action depends on the refund category and the order’s stated grounds.

The portal or PFMS page is unavailable
Record the ARN and the time of the failed attempt, then retry through the official portal later. Avoid relying on unofficial status pages or sharing the ARN, bank details or portal credentials with an unknown intermediary. If the issue persists, use the support route provided by the relevant official portal and quote the ARN so the application can be identified.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check whether the refund was actually credited
- Confirm the GST Portal decision and the sanctioned amount, if an RFD-06 order is displayed.
- Open PFMS and check the bank-validation and disbursal information associated with the refund.
- Check the bank account statement or transaction history for the credited amount.
- If PFMS shows disbursal but the account statement does not, compare the account details and transaction date shown by your bank, then raise the discrepancy through the appropriate official support channel.
A sanctioned or partially sanctioned RFD-06 outcome answers the decision question; PFMS and the bank answer the payment question. Treat those as separate checks.
Check the statement for the account identified in the refund records, not simply the account most recently used for other GST payments. If the bank account has changed, compare the details shown in the relevant application and payment order before concluding that a credit is missing.
Is there a standard GST refund processing time?
The official material used for this procedure explains how to locate the stage and verify validation or disbursal, but it does not establish one current processing or credit timeline that applies to every refund type and case. Do not rely on a blanket number of days. Use the status shown for your ARN, read any official notice attached to the application and investigate a stalled validation or missing payment through the relevant official channel.
Portal labels and navigation can change. If a later GST Portal redesign uses different wording, match the function—refund tracking, bank-account status or PFMS payment tracking—rather than relying on an older screenshot.
A practical status-check routine
Use this sequence whenever you need a complete answer rather than only an application-stage update:
- Locate the ARN. Retrieve the receipt from My Saved/Filed Applications if necessary.
- Run the GST Portal search. Use Services > Refunds > Track Application Status, or the pre-login Services > Track Application Status > Refund route.
- Record the highlighted stage. Note whether the next action is with the taxpayer or officer.
- Read any RFD-06 outcome. Distinguish sanctioned, partially sanctioned and rejected labels from payment completion.
- Check bank validation. Review the portal’s bank-status indicator and PFMS.
- Check disbursal and the bank statement. Only this final comparison answers whether the money has reached the account.
When professional help may be worthwhile
A qualified GST practitioner or tax adviser can be useful when an application is disputed, repeatedly rejected, stalled after a required response, or affected by complicated bank-account or refund-category issues. Choose someone who can explain the specific order and filing history. Professional assistance is optional for a straightforward ARN lookup; the basic status check is available through the official GST Portal and PFMS workflow.
Ask an adviser to review the ARN history, RFD-06 order, bank-validation result and PFMS entry together. Looking at only one screen can obscure whether the issue is a pending taxpayer action, an officer decision, a failed validation or a payment that has already been released.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I check my GST refund status by ARN?
Use the GST Portal’s logged-in path, Services > Refunds > Track Application Status, enter the ARN and select Search. GSTN also documents the pre-login path Services > Track Application Status > Refund, where you enter the ARN and submit the search.
Best Value
Where can I check whether my GST refund has been credited?
Use the GST Portal to confirm the application decision and then check PFMS for bank validation and disbursal. Finally compare the PFMS result with the bank account statement. A sanctioned RFD-06 order alone does not prove that the money has been credited.
What is the difference between GST Portal status and PFMS status?
The GST Portal shows the application-processing stage and whether the next action is with the taxpayer or officer. PFMS covers bank-account validation and payment disbursal. They are connected, but they do not answer the same question.
Why is my refund sanctioned but not in my bank account?
A sanction or payment order is not the same as completed credit. GSTN explains that PFMS validation is required in connection with RFD-01 and again for the RFD-05 payment order before final disbursal. Check PFMS and the account statement.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What do the green tick and red cross mean for bank status?
In GSTN’s bank-account status guide, a green tick means successful validation and a red cross means validation failed. An in-progress validation may show no status. These indicators do not replace the refund decision or PFMS disbursal check.
What if I lost my ARN receipt?
Sign in and open Services > Refunds > My Saved/Filed Applications. Find the application, open its ARN hyperlink and download the receipt. Use the recovered ARN for subsequent searches.
Does an RFD-06 rejection automatically tell me what to do next?
No. The rejection label identifies the recorded outcome, but the order and any attached notice contain the case-specific reasons and instructions. Read those documents before deciding whether a response, correction or other remedy is available.
Is there one guaranteed GST refund processing time?
The cited GSTN tracking material does not establish one current timeline for every refund type and case. Follow the status for your ARN, read official notices and investigate a stalled validation or missing payment through the relevant official channel.
The Bottom Line
Use the ARN to find the application stage on the GST Portal. Then check PFMS for bank validation and disbursal, and confirm the final credit in the correct bank account. A GST Portal decision, an RFD-06 order, a PFMS release and a bank credit are related but separate events.
