How to Track a Cybercrime Complaint and Check Whether Money Was Frozen in India

In India, use your National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) acknowledgement number to check complaint progress at the official portal. That status does not confirm that a bank has frozen money. To verify a hold, contact your bank and the State/UT investigating police authority handling the complaint; for active cyber financial fraud, call 1930 immediately.

How do I track my cybercrime complaint?

  1. Find your acknowledgement number. If you filed through “Report and Track” or “Report Other Cybercrime,” the NCRP says it sends a complaint reference number by SMS and email. Keep it with your transaction records. Read the NCRP FAQ.
  2. Open the official status page. Go to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and choose the complaint status/check-status option. Enter the acknowledgement number, then complete the requested OTP and captcha. The portal interface can change, so follow the labels shown on the official site. The Government Services Portal describes the status service.
  3. Save what the page shows. Note the displayed status, any action or pending-investigation details, and the date you checked. The service describes status and action information, but does not establish that every case will show the same level of detail.

Use the official cybercrime.gov.in domain. Do not enter your acknowledgement number or OTP on a lookalike site reached through an advertisement or an unsolicited message.

How can I check whether money was frozen?

Check with the bank and the investigating authority, not just the complaint-status page. The NCRP/I4C portal notice says that “neither NCRP nor I4C has the authority to place liens, freeze, or unfreeze bank accounts.” A complaint is handled by the relevant State/UT police authority; banks act on appropriate directions from law-enforcement agencies.

  1. Contact your bank through its official fraud channel. Give the bank your transaction details and complaint references. Ask whether a hold or lien has been placed, what amount is currently held, and which investigating authority issued the instruction. Request the bank complaint or service reference number.
  2. Contact the State/UT police authority handling your NCRP complaint. Provide the acknowledgement number and ask for the complaint’s current status, whether any instruction was sent to the bank, and what the next step is. NCRP complaints are handled by the selected State/UT police authorities; procedures may vary by case. See the NCRP FAQ.
  3. Keep a dated follow-up record. Record the acknowledgement number, any 1930 reference, transaction IDs and dates, amount, bank complaint number, and the date and office or person contacted. This gives both institutions the information needed to locate your report.

The official material does not establish a universal public page that displays a bank’s freeze status. Ask the bank and investigating authority for explicit confirmation rather than treating a generic portal status as proof of a hold.

What does my cybercrime complaint status mean?

What you are checking Where to follow up Identifier or details What the result establishes
Complaint progress NCRP Check Status and the assigned State/UT police authority Acknowledgement number; portal OTP and captcha Progress or actions shown for the report; not, by itself, a bank hold.
Bank transaction or account hold Your bank and the responsible investigating authority Bank complaint reference, transaction IDs, and NCRP acknowledgement Whether the bank confirms an instruction to hold a stated amount. Ask directly; a universal public freeze-status display is not established.

An acknowledgement number shows that a report was submitted and gives you a reference for tracking; it is not a finding that the allegation has been substantiated. Likewise, a pending, assigned, acknowledged, or under-process status describes complaint handling, not necessarily what has happened to funds.

What should I do if the fraud is happening now?

For cyber financial fraud, the NCRP directs victims to report immediately by calling 1930 and describes the helpline as available 24/7. Keep the 1930 report reference if one is provided, along with transaction IDs, dates, amounts, and your bank’s complaint number. Do not wait for an online status update before contacting the bank and reporting the fraud. Use the NCRP financial-fraud reporting page.

Does a freeze mean I will get my money back?

No. A hold and a refund are different outcomes. A bank hold may restrict funds while authorities handle the matter, but it does not establish that the money will be returned to you or when. The official material gives no universal timeline for status updates, freezes, or refunds. A parliamentary answer notes that banks defreeze accounts on appropriate directions from concerned law-enforcement agencies when a complaint is resolved or a false or fraudulent complaint is withdrawn; that is not a promise of repayment to a complainant. Read the parliamentary answer.

If you are outside India

This tracking process is specific to India’s NCRP and State/UT police system. Contact your own country’s official cybercrime-reporting authority and your bank’s official fraud channel. The India portal’s references, status page, and helpline should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
